I'd believe that if piazza wasnt already on the path towards first base. If someone is going to attack the pitcher , they probably arent going to make a circle to them. itll probably be in a straight line lol
As a kid I played catcher one season in little league cause we were having trouble getting bases stolen on us (which abruptly ended when I was pulled from short to play behind the plate for my first and only time ever) and at that brief period in my childhood Mike Piazza was my favorite catcher. He played the game really well bury with the bat and glove and he came off as a class act to an naive kid who doesn’t know any better. Also there was no internet or social media so unless you had ESPN or read the newspaper you didn’t hear about this kinda off the field stuff. Just what happened during a game.
What baffles me even more than the antisocial behavior of professional baseball players is how many baseball fans wish they could get in a fight, but don't because they would face social consequences, so they live vicariously through demanding that baseball players fight each other
I met Roger once, and I actually asked him about the beef. It was kinda weird to ask the legend at the source, but he was kinda coy about it. makes sense tho given that this all happened literally 20 years earlier
Roger was just fired up when he caught the bat and I think for once he was telling the truth. You could tell he was just amped and kind of startled by the broken about flying at him. He seemed like he was mad it wasn't the ball and just threw it in disgust.
@@BlueWingedRino He didn't throw it to first base because he realized it wasn't the ball. He threw it towards the dugout, but that was where Piazza was running, and it was all in a split second. I'm so old, I remember being a kid and seeing this live. What an exciting time, every year the world series seemed like a big deal, I'm giant event you didn't want to miss each night on TV. Our parents would let us stay up late whenever it was the NBA finals of the world series, we knew it was special, I wish it was still like that. The last world series I remember feeling like a big deal was the Cubs and Indians from a few years back now. All of my co-workers were going over to my boss's house each night to watch those exciting games.
To me its crazy that pitchers even have the balls to throw the ball at someone. Thats how I know I could never play baseball because let a pitcher throw a ball at me going 90+ mph. You better knock me out because if I get up, I'm not dropping that bat when I come to the pitchers mound. If you can throw something at me, I can hit you with this bat. fair is fair to me.
Great video! Wish you could have included the clip of Matt Nokes (who owned him) retaliating by throwing the ball back to Clemens that you reference early on, that moment was seared into my childhood brain as someone standing up to that clown. Zero respect for Roger.

Yeah, Piazza was one of my favorite players growing up, and all I knew of Clemens was the bat incident, so I thought he was some kind of psycho. But watching this, I really think he was throwing the bat to the dugout, but Piazza was running to first base, and he almost hit him. I don't think it was intentional. But people want to believe in the drama over the mundane reality.
I was at that game where Clemens beaned Piazza. I was sitting in the upper deck and even up there, the crack of the ball hitting Piazza's helmet was very LOUD!
I low key believe that if pitcher have the right to throw 100mph solid balls at batters batters should have the right to swing at pitcher if they're able to get to them
Mike will never admit it, he is very smart, he has this business type look even when he played, he probably didn’t tip but studied the scouting report and asked Roger to pitch to the batter’s strenght. That all star game was the worst beating of Roger Clemen’s career. That all star game you forgot to mention that. Was in Houston, Roger Clemens had ads out was being advertised as a hero, he had a phenomenal season going for him. The fans of 30 teams and then some more were watching. It was the perfect stage to absolutely embarrass Roger Clemens. But we won’t hear this until Piazza is probably 92. It just doesn’t make sense that Clemens was that good that year except for the ASG.
IMO, clemens shouldnt have hit him at all, even in the back or ribs!! He wasnt being disrespectful or anything. He just had a rew good games against him!! Thats not a good enough reason to hit him!! Hes just a sensitive baby!!🤷♂️🤷♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I remember at this time during this beef thinking the whole time Piazza was just scared of him. But now in my 40's he was just way more mature than Clemons immature and petty ass. This from a Yankee fan.
I try not to be revenge minded, but Clemens really should've gotten some sort of penance. Also, the T-mobile ad was only 2 in a row for me, but I already have that network.
This is why the “unwritten rules“ of baseball have value. People want to castigate the rules, but they have merit. There will never be closure because the rules were not followed.
I’ll never forget watching game 1 of the WS at my friends house, we went nuts when Clemens threw the bat at him. Clemens had so much roid rage, he acted as though piazza aimed the broken bat at him on purpose 😂
He totally was the bigger man and I understand his reaction to the bat throwing. I would have been too stunned of the idiocy of it happening to react with violence.
I think Piazza handled it perfectly. He stepped to Clemens after it happened, and like he said, if Clemens wanted a fight, Piazza probably would have done it. But Clemens was reacting like he didn't mean it, and that defused things just enough. And from this video, I believe that Clemens really didn't mean to throw the bat at Piazza. I think he had a brain fart, fielded the bat, realized it wasn't the ball, also nearly got hit by it, and in the heat of the moment threw it towards the dugout off the field. But Piazza was running to first so it almost caught him. Clemens knew it looked bad, but he said he didn't meant it. But no one believes him. I think people want to believe that he meant to throw it. People want drama. The truth that it was an accident is too mundane.
I think it's more likely these two guys don't care about an incident that happened over 20 years ago, and they wouldn't even think about it if the media didn't bring it up. Just laugh at Mike Piazza's split against Roger Clemens, say Clemens had roid rage, and call it a day
If I were Clemens, whether I meant to do it or not, I would just say... "Look, I'm a Major League pitcher, which means I made a living by throwing things accurately. If I wanted to hit him, he would have been hit."
"I would never throw at someone and risk their livelihood" "If I wanted to hit him with that bat, I would have hit him with that bat" Known ball thrower says ball was misthrown, but bat was perfectly thrown, makes sense
That teammate saying they should fight is Mike Hampton. Dude was a pit bull and had dynamite stuff during that spell of his career and was one of the best hitting pitchers of his time. He fell of a cliff after the big contract but he earned his way into receiving it for sure.
As a diehard Yankee Fan, the thinking it was the ball excuse never made sense. Whether it’s a bat or a ball, there’s no reason to throw it in that direction lol.. With that said, Clemens’ intensity is what made him great & scary. Honestly, Piazza wanted no part of Clemens..
Clemens actually did bat in Shea Stadium against the Mets, and pitcher Sean Estes threw at Clemens but missed him, throwing it behind Clemens, waist high instead. They missed their chance as they didn't attempt to bean him again that day. I'm a Yankee fan, and I can honestly say that I was perplexed by Clemens throwing the bat. Clemens was a strange case because although he was ON the Yankees, he never truly WAS a Yankee. It's kinda hard to explain. Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, they WERE Yankees. Guys like David Justice was ON the Yankees, but he never truly WAS a Yankee. Anyway, that's how I personally viewed Clemens.
I remember this feud very well. The simple fact is this: Mike owned Roger's ass at the plate. Mike was a stellar hitter, the best hitting catcher to date. Roger is not going to tolerate all this hitting so he tried to brush him back and maybe he got a little too pumped up about it. These guys are a competitive that most regular people do not understand and baseball like most sports is really just organized war. Piazza owned his ass and Clemens didn't like it. Not cool that he throws at his head but it's in the past and thank God, Mike is doing fine despite being drilled in the head. FYI, Clemens never liked playing the Mets as he was a part of that losing Red Sox team back in '86. That's another reason he was on edge playing them. One of them is in the HoF the other is not and for good reason.

What baffles me even more than the antisocial behavior of professional baseball players is how many baseball fans wish they could get in a fight, but don't because they would face social consequences, so they live vicariously through demanding that baseball players fight each other
Brilliant dropping this right before the finale of the Subway Series
I met Roger once, and I actually asked him about the beef. It was kinda weird to ask the legend at the source, but he was kinda coy about it. makes sense tho given that this all happened literally 20 years earlier
Roger was just fired up when he caught the bat and I think for once he was telling the truth. You could tell he was just amped and kind of startled by the broken about flying at him. He seemed like he was mad it wasn't the ball and just threw it in disgust.
If he thought it was the ball why didn’t he throw it to first base?
Throwing at the base runner is not normal operating procedure.
@@BlueWingedRino He didn't throw it to first base because he realized it wasn't the ball. He threw it towards the dugout, but that was where Piazza was running, and it was all in a split second.
I'm a Dodger fan, and I was a kid when Piazza was with us so I root for his side in this. But I don't think Clemens meant to throw the bat at Piazza, and he knew it looked bad on him. He definitely meant to bean Piazza though, and I think he is a sack of crap.
God bless RUclips Premium. No ads, no irritation from anything.
that T-Mobile ad was annoying
I'm so old, I remember being a kid and seeing this live. What an exciting time, every year the world series seemed like a big deal, I'm giant event you didn't want to miss each night on TV. Our parents would let us stay up late whenever it was the NBA finals of the world series, we knew it was special, I wish it was still like that. The last world series I remember feeling like a big deal was the Cubs and Indians from a few years back now. All of my co-workers were going over to my boss's house each night to watch those exciting games.
It’s still insane to me that it is normal for pitchers to try to hit batters…
To me its crazy that pitchers even have the balls to throw the ball at someone. Thats how I know I could never play baseball because let a pitcher throw a ball at me going 90+ mph. You better knock me out because if I get up, I'm not dropping that bat when I come to the pitchers mound. If you can throw something at me, I can hit you with this bat. fair is fair to me.
You can clearly see Clemens wasn't even looking at Piazza when he threw the bat head.
“Secret Base subscribers beef with T-Mobile deserves a rewind.”
Great video! Wish you could have included the clip of Matt Nokes (who owned him) retaliating by throwing the ball back to Clemens that you reference early on, that moment was seared into my childhood brain as someone standing up to that clown. Zero respect for Roger.
Loved this era of baseball. Now everyone is friends like the NBA
favourite series on youtube this - need to do more uk football beef or just football beefs in general as theres a few - keane vs viera, man u ferguson vs arsenal wenger, pep vs ibra, mourinho vs wenger, keane vs haaland - or for rewind the battle of the bridge - like the amerocan sports ones (especially bball) but would be cool to have more ones for home sports
A good old re-upload, I dig it.
Im actually not that mad at Clemens here. I think he didnt mean to offend, he was just charged up
Yeah, Piazza was one of my favorite players growing up, and all I knew of Clemens was the bat incident, so I thought he was some kind of psycho. But watching this, I really think he was throwing the bat to the dugout, but Piazza was running to first base, and he almost hit him.
I don't think it was intentional. But people want to believe in the drama over the mundane reality.
No ones talking about Clemens still rocking the frosted tips in the 2020s
It's crazy that we haven't gotten a collaspe of the 1986 Mets 🤔
Probably because ESPN has already made several documentaries about that team
they only do these when they have something to add.
@@jasonquinlan1733 Idk if they covered the team after 1986. Like the 1988 team that fell in the NLCS, the failure of Generation K, etc.
@@PhantomThiefOfSports Doc and Darrell 30 for 30 covers most of the separation, however it’s from the perspective of gooden and strawberry
I was at that game where Clemens beaned Piazza. I was sitting in the upper deck and even up there, the crack of the ball hitting Piazza's helmet was very LOUD!
Seriously.....F the unwritten rules
I had T-Mobile until my 10,000,000th time seeing the Suits ad. I now have Verizon.
They made a baseball card of Clemens hitting with a broken bat shortly after the incident. I’m proud to say I have a 1/1 printing plate of that card.
I get the feeling Clemsons really wanted Piazza to retaliate.
I low key believe that if pitcher have the right to throw 100mph solid balls at batters batters should have the right to swing at pitcher if they're able to get to them
Mets teammates later admitted they lost respect for Piazza not charging
I didn't know about Clemens blog, yeah Piazza should've checked him
Piazza wouldn't share his roid hook-up with Clemens. There, gave you the short version.
Got Damn T-Mobile I already got a phone and plan with Yall. CHILL OUT!!!
Forgot about this one...Can you do A Rod vs the 2004 Redsox next?...Pleaaaase????
I remember at this time during this beef thinking the whole time Piazza was just scared of him. But now in my 40's he was just way more mature than Clemons immature and petty ass. This from a Yankee fan.
Piazza was definitely shook
Well if they ever do become friends Piazza can invite Clemens to Cooperstown to see his HOF bust
I try not to be revenge minded, but Clemens really should've gotten some sort of penance.
Also, the T-mobile ad was only 2 in a row for me, but I already have that network.
nah, nah, Clemens vs Piazza needs to be a joust like on American Gladiators back in the day
This is why the “unwritten rules“ of baseball have value.
Piazza was definitely the bigger man in this feud, and it sounds like he owned Clemens.
Your videos are fantastic!
Is t mobile a sponsor?
What makes you ask that?
I think it's more likely these two guys don't care about an incident that happened over 20 years ago, and they wouldn't even think about it if the media didn't bring it up. Just laugh at Mike Piazza's split against Roger Clemens, say Clemens had roid rage, and call it a day
If I were Clemens, whether I meant to do it or not, I would just say...
"Look, I'm a Major League pitcher, which means I made a living by throwing things accurately. If I wanted to hit him, he would have been hit."
"I would never throw at someone and risk their livelihood"
"If I wanted to hit him with that bat, I would have hit him with that bat"
Known ball thrower says ball was misthrown, but bat was perfectly thrown, makes sense
Completely unrelated, but the tapered tail on Piazza's mustache is incredible
Clemens said he didn't hit Piazza deliberately and he's never given us any reason to question his honesty 😄
@@FrankThe77Tank lol right of it was the ball, then he's intentionally committing an error?
Please do a reminder episode on the 1991 World Series game 6/7. It’s the greatest World Series ever and you guys still haven’t made one about it yet!!
I think the home run off Clemens by Estes was better as well.
Mets fan here. Clemons definitely wasn’t past his prime. Remember, his best years were towards the beginning and end of his career.
Secret base just doesn’t miss…
NEVER have I been a Mets fan but for the record they showed perfect class
"...a bit past his prime [coming off 2 straight Cy Youngs] but still a force. "
Roger is that guy that you didn’t know you accidentally pissed off before he’s bright red and barking in your face. 😂
As an Australian I don’t get this. The pitcher hit him cause the batter was playing well against him????
That’s the game of baseball for you; it’s a stupid ass games.
Clemens wearing an NYPD hat *screams* bootlicking narc.
NYC has to be a fascist's paradise, or else the people would eat each other. Same with Los Angeles, and every major city.
A beef episode between Christoph Daum and Uli Hoeneß would be interesting. It's a well known story in football Germany.
Piazza in the HOF while Clemens fades into obscurity and infamy. Seems like time has deemed Piazza the victor.
What do you mean fades into obscurity??? He has seven CY Youngs??
