He looks at first like he's going to throw it as hard as he can at him, but then his body language just shifts. It's subtle, but you can see it. I think he was reacting with emotions, like when it happened, I think his instincts just kicked in, and he thought he was being attacked or something. I don't know any rational reason why he would do that.

I remember after Clemens gave up back 2 back homers he drilled John Shelby with the next pitch who charged Clemens with bat in hand, good thing catcher John Marzano was able to tackle Shelby before he reached the mound. The intentional drillings, often up high, were dangerous given how hard they threw, but the fear they instilled in the hitters worked for them.

As a kid I played catcher one season in little league cause we were having trouble getting bases stolen on us (which abruptly ended when I was pulled from short to play behind the plate for my first and only time ever) and at that brief period in my childhood Mike Piazza was my favorite catcher. He played the game really well bury with the bat and glove and he came off as a class act to an naive kid who doesn’t know any better. Also there was no internet or social media so unless you had ESPN or read the newspaper you didn’t hear about this kinda off the field stuff. Just what happened during a game.

    • @shorewall

I think Piazza handled it perfectly. He stepped to Clemens after it happened, and like he said, if Clemens wanted a fight, Piazza probably would have done it. But Clemens was reacting like he didn't mean it, and that defused things just enough.
And from this video, I believe that Clemens really didn't mean to throw the bat at Piazza. I think he had a brain fart, fielded the bat, realized it wasn't the ball, also nearly got hit by it, and in the heat of the moment threw it towards the dugout off the field. But Piazza was running to first so it almost caught him.
Clemens knew it looked bad, but he said he didn't meant it. But no one believes him. I think people want to believe that he meant to throw it. People want drama. The truth that it was an accident is too mundane.

I'm a Yankee fan, and I can honestly say that I was perplexed by Clemens throwing the bat. Clemens was a strange case because although he was ON the Yankees, he never truly WAS a Yankee. I remember this feud very well. The simple fact is this: Mike owned Roger's ass at the plate. Mike was a stellar hitter, the best hitting catcher to date. Roger is not going to tolerate all this hitting so he tried to brush him back and maybe he got a little too pumped up about it. These guys are a competitive that most regular people do not understand and baseball like most sports is really just organized war. Piazza owned his ass and Clemens didn't like it. Not cool that he throws at his head but it's in the past and thank God, Mike is doing fine despite being drilled in the head. FYI, Clemens never liked playing the Mets as he was a part of that losing Red Sox team back in '86. That's another reason he was on edge playing them. One of them is in the HoF the other is not and for good reason.
