The Kings-Lakers beef had coaches insulting fans, suspicious refs, and… poison?

- We don't often do a team vs team beef, but with this one there were so many participants it only seemed right. When the Kings got good at the turn of the century and challenged the Lakers, you had stuff like Shaq declaring LA had supplanted Sacramento as California's capital. You had Phil Jackson calling Kings fans rednecks. You had the refs allegedly choosing sides. You had a Sacramento hotel allegedly poisoning Kobe Bryant via cheeseburger. There was a lot going on, from a lot of angles.
Enjoy this beef, and you just have to trust me that it's not poisoned.

The 2002 Western Conference Finals was basically the real NBA Finals that year. It felt like a movie. Even with the controversy, Lakers-Kings 2002 is still arguably the best and most iconic non-Finals playoff series in NBA history in my opinion. Celtics-Bulls in 2009 is up there too but there was just a certain weight and magnitude to Lakers-Kings 2002.
Nah
Nets would have swept Sacramento (who played no defense)
Celtics and Nets was six or seven games itself, but neither of those two had a shot against the Kings or Lakers.

I don't believe a lot of the NBA conspiracy theories, but David Stern definitely rigged Game 6 in 2002. He was terrified of possible low TV ratings from a Sacremento-New Jersey Finals.
While I don't disagree it was rigged, the irony is how many people watched the finals of The Lakers sweeping the Nets? The Nets Kings would have been much more fun, exciting and competitive.

The late 90’s and early 2000’s, Sacramento Kings were some of the most beloved teams in NBA history.
They were incredibly deep, with seven players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Chris Webber's 24.5 points per game. Webber (10.1 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.7 steals, 1.4 blocks) served as the focal point and did a little of everything, although he had plenty of help.
Peja Stojakovic was a rising sniper in the league, drilling 41.6 percent of his three-pointers en route to 21.2 points per night. The Kings also featured playmaking from Mike Bibby, hard-nosed defense from Doug Christie, a versatile veteran center in Vlade Divac and a deep bench, headlined by Bobby Jackson and Hedo Turkoglu.
The 61 wins marked the highest in franchise history to date, and landing just one game short of the NBA Finals was an extremely disappointing finish.
Sacramento has never been as good before, or since, and may never have as talented a starting five.
2003 was even deeper with Keon Clark and Jim Jackson.
Problem was, too much depth can be a disadvantage.
Hedo Turkoglu became the forgotten man, only used after CWebb went injured (and never the same again) in 2003 West semis (G2).
Then salary cap becomes an issue. With Bibby's huge extension taking effect while added Brad Miller, the Kings lost Hedo, Clark, J. Jackson, and mainstay Scot Pollard in 2003 offseason.
they were completely robbed in 2002. NBA is a joke.

It’s a callback to Edward R Murrow’s signoff of “good night and good luck.”
It's absolutely a no brainer that it was rigged, and I'm not a Kings fan. LA's population, size, popularity essentially allows the NBA to create a money printing machine. The revenue comparison between Sac in the finals vs LA is astronomical worse for the NBA with having Sac there. There's no way they're going to allow that. And poor officiating doesn't guarantee the NBA's team wins but the goal is influence the outcome, not directly control it. David Stern was even quoted back then as saying that his dream finals match up would be LA vs LA. Hint, hint...
Why did a corrupt popularity contest allow SAS win 5 titles?

This topic has been done to death… and I’m still here for it every time. “Horry for the win!”
This beef was bound to happen. Both teams operate in California, one team is pretty much Hollywood’s premier franchise historically while the other has struggled to put together a winning organization. It mostly took one game where almost everyone knew that the NBA wanted the Lakers in the Finals and I really believe that because the officiating was very one-sided in regards to number of fouls and of course we have hearsay from Tim Donaghey who, yes, did commit a crime by throwing games away for the mafia but the simple fact that he had inside knowledge on who the NBA favored should be enough evidence contrary to what the league said at the time. Donaghey may have wanted to bury the league with himself by coming out with all this but that playoff game between the Kings and Lakers was no better proof of the NBA showing favoritism for one team.
The FBI wanted to use Donaghy to get info on any other refs who were also cheating, but Stern leaked the story to the press so that the element of surprise was lost.

Inasmuch we should not believe in lucky charm or superstitions, somehow outcomes speak for itself.

Mario Elie didn't like the new unis, looking them like the Harlem Globetrotters.
And that old but classic Houston outfit gave them back-to-back Titles, including recovering from 2-3 deficit in 1994 Finals and an improbable 1995 run, so why change?
The next year, their new look was concluded by dethronement via sweep by Seattle.
Ironically, after years of Playoff disappointment including an upset from 8th-seed Denver, Seattle dons a new outfit that year that made them all the way to the Finals.
Same goes to Utah in 1996-97.
As for the Kings, that new uniform plus a more deeper and talented bench in 2002-03 would turned out the beginning of the end. CWebb's injury in 2003 WCSF G2 marked the end of his athleticism, and so the Kings' fate.
