- In 1989, the St. Louis Cardinals came close to acquiring Boston Red Sox third baseman Wade Boggs. one of the greatest players of all time. However, right before the trade could be finalized, it fell through. It didn't fall through due to any reason by the Cardinals or Red Sox, it fell through due to a third party, not even associated with any of the players involved.

Could you imagine Boggs playing for the team that also owned Budweiser?!
He drank Miller Lite
Keep up the great work on your videos! I learn something new every week!

I think that the waiver process you described applied only to players traded between the two leagues. So, as I understand it, if the Cardinals had wanted to trade Peña to, let's say, the Giants, they wouldn't have had to put him on waivers.
Funny you mention that, because that's exactly what Bob Murphy said on the Mets broadcast after I cut away from it. Small gaffe on my part.
St. Louis got screwed out of Wade Boggs by Montreal, little over 8 years later came a certain incident that happened in a wrestling event in montreal, the year after montreal, St Louis played host to a legendary screwjob finish at survivor series 1998
Vince screwed the Cards
actually, teams quite often will put players through waivers with no intention of trading.. sometimes its a way of guaging interest... sometimes is merely a way of getting some guys through by putting some bigger names with them... Also, Boggs and Pendlton would have had to pass through waivers as well. they probably had bigger deals that would scare some teams off.. but i would have claimed Tony as well... Hell, his career he was the best in baseball there for a while.
"Why would a team put Pena on waivers if they weren't going to trade him"
Because they were revocable waivers. There was no cost to putting a player on waivers, and no risk. Teams would put lots of players on waivers, with the idea of trying to sneak guys through.

Can’t listen to that narrator… oooof
They were tied with the Mets for third place, not second place - the Cardinals and the Mets were behind two teams (the Cubs and the Expos).
I don’t understand. With the waiver wire, teams claim based on record. If the Expos were tied for first place, wouldn’t the Red Sox get the chance to choose Peña before the Expos? Did the Expos start losing and then have a lower record?
You realize they play in different leagues right? Expos could be in 1st in their division, even the entire National League, and the Red Sox could still have a better record.
So if the Red Sox had claimed Pena, the deal would likewise have been off. The Cardinals could have just pulled him off waivers.
@@grimeypipes2765 That’s where I messed up! Teams in the same league choose before the other league. Thanks!
@@grimeypipes2765 You don't have to be a smartass about it.
@@LinkRocks ............😢 wasn't my intention
Pena should NEVER have won an MVP
Pena didn't win MVP he was an all star. Pendleton was the MVP
@@jasonwethy8360 🤣 got me....I meant Terry 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@grimeypipes2765 Pendleton was good. These Cardinals teams are what made me love baseball. I grew up 2 hours from St Louis and we went to at least a game a year for years. That said 91 I wasn't 10 yet and only knew all stars not other rewards. But MVP had slightly different criteria than now. Could just be because of different voters. So I agree but I love Terry Pendleton
Youre a clown!
Big Red Sox & Wade Boggs fan back then.....never heard of this deal before? Interesting
