  • For a player that only played in parts of seven seasons, and only has three qualified years, you wouldn't expect him to have one of the greatest seasons of the past three decades, and arguably be a top 5 player in the league. However, that is exactly what happened to second baseman Marcus Giles, a player who had one of the greatest forgotten seasons in recent history.

I remember watching the Braves on TBS that year, and thinking "this Giles is a beast". Power & defense from the keystone, a rare combination.
The Braves' offense that year was awesome: despite league-average production from 1B & 3B, they had Gary Sheffield in top form, and Javy Lopez set the Catcher record for HR that year. Chipper & Andruw Jones both had excellent seasons. They lead the league in scoring.
Anyway, Giles was still an excellent player (if not at the rare heights of 2003) the following two seasons, but sadly, fell off a cliff thereafter. I'm not sure I buy the injury theory (I've heard it before) due to it taking another couple seasons, but who knows.

I always felt bad his career tanked before he got a comfy free agent deal
