Coaching a High School Track Athlete
Aries had a high trail arm to keep his shoulders square to the hurdle. Grant keeps his trail arm forward and sometimes touches his lead leg so it has a shorter distance to travel.
He(Aries) also moves his lead arm slightly earlier than most to help keep his shoulders square. I couldn't edit the last comment.
@@longjumpersrule thanks for the comments! Yes, I knew that about Grant, but I did not about Aries. Is that stuff that he has talked about?
@@acemethodcoaching9102 I've never heard Aries talk about it but I've heard a few other hurdlers talk about moving the lead arm early. I'll try to find the video. They like to keep some of those things secret unfortunately.
@ funny story. I happened to be at USATF level II course years ago talking about hurdling. I asked the panel about Aries arm action. They weren’t familiar with it. But, in the audience were some of his college coaches who said they used to try to teach it out of him, with no success. 😂
Where did pt. 5 and 6 go
She’s landing on her heels which is decreasing her speed? I have a problem with that too

And yet Femke owns 20 of TOP 50 fastest times ever recorded over 400mH. Sydney owns 12 of TOP 50. Both are tied at 9 fastest times of TOP 20.
Would love to see your next analysis posted titled: Part-1 of 5. How Femke Bol Dominated Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone since 2022. Femke Bol owns 20 of TOP 50 fastest times ever recorded over 400mH while Sydney owns 12 of 50. Femke Bol is reigning: World Champion, European Champion, Dutch Champion, and Wanda Diamond League Champion. In 2022 Bol was the first woman in history to win both the 400mH and 400m flat outdoor in a major championship (in this case: 2022 Munich European Athletics Championships) where she also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay to GOLD. Bol is the only woman in history to concurrently hold the World Titles in both the 400mH and 400m indoor short track where she is the WR holder with 49.17 (score of 1272). Bol also ran 47.93 anchor leg split to take GOLD at Paris Olympics in the 4x400m mixed relay. For all those who belittle the mixed relay, the world is against you. Now we have the 4x100 mixed relay coming in 2026 at Budapest Hungary World Athletics ULTIMATE Championships.
I run a just under a 12 second 100 and my 110 hurdle pr is 17.67. Yet I’m told my form is good and I’m scraping over the hurdle. But I loose speed through the race help
I lose speed throughout the race but I’m 0.0” over the hurdle
What’s odd is Kishane is “supposedly “ doing everything correctly and Noah the opposite but Noah has won the last 2 global 100 meter championships ?? And according to every “arm chair expert “ Noah lacks the talent, ability… ??? 🤷🏿♂️
With all due respect to Femke and her fans, Sydney has more left also. Once she made up the stagger by the 2nd hurdle, she paced Bol. Maybe we need to have a match race with the top 8. No prelims, just the final. That way the excuse that’s going around about Femke running the 400 race is not in the equation.
I think trying to analyze human beings this way is idiotic. As far as I’m concerned, so are the metrics used in Baseball and other sports. Bottom line is you can’t know how the person is feeling on any given day let alone a particular race. The whole idea is terribly flawed. It was invented by a bunch of computer geeks who don’t want to get real jobs. Before you all jump on me, I was an athletic prodigy when I was younger, who had the privilege of meeting Ted Williams when I was 9 yrs old at his Camp. Athletes run in the family as my Cousin played for the Dolphins in the mid 80’s.

Wow!! Overtraining your athletes 😢😅
@@OPPOSITEWORLD-sr3ls I’ve done this type of training for over 15 years and my athletes consistently improve throughout the season and peak at the end. That wouldn’t happen if they were over-trained.
@ I’m glad it’s worked for you coach. I don’t love this plan. Is there a previous coach’s work that has inspired your workout format?
@ it’s not just me. All the feedback I get from other coaches that use this also have success. Yes. The root of this came from Lyle Knudson. He’s deceased and unfortunately, it’s hard to find info on his philosophy.
So. For middle distance runners, they shouldn’t do continuous easyruns? Like 5miles easy jog, instead they should do 6-6-6?
Great question and I wish that I did a better job explaining this on the video and even in the handout. 800 runners can either be 400-800 or 800-16 hundred. If they are lean towards 1600, they mostly train with the distance runners, but then once a week, I would have them join my 400-800 group for repeats.

Last guy is reaching across his body in the sprint. Work sprint technique.
I like it but I don't like it....I don't like the idea of choosing athletes......why couldn't all the athletes be involved?
@2:15. Not "speed endurance". That's like intensive tempo or something. You might want to read up on the common vernacular or taxonomy of the training ranges for sprinters. There is some variance here or there between countries, coaches, etc. But speed endurance is generally the very next notch slightly down from 100% maximal velocity in terms for intensity. Short speed endurance is considered something like 8-15 sec at 99-95% maxV. Long speed endurance is 15-40 sec at 95-90% maxV. Both of those are done with complete recoveries between reps. Furthermore, no 100/200 sprinter knows what their 800m race pace is
@@mkdorkov123 thanks for your input. I can agree with everything you’re saying here. My intended audience for this video is a lot less educated than you are on this subject and I wanted to keep things at a very general level. Well, not being textbook, My experiences is this term resonates with most of them. I never actually give my kids detailed pace. I just describe what I want them to feel like when they’re racing a particular distance and capture that during these intervals. Again, not textbook, but I found it to be practical and it works. Thanks again.
The app sounds fun!

for a lot of coaches, they are just a body that filled the position because no one else wanted to volunteer their time, and it does involve a lot. the problem means there are also a few that have no idea what they are doing, or think they are going to coach the next superstar. the best thing a new coach can do is get some sort of certification. In Canada it is actually mandatory for safety reasons and also teaches the coaches the limits and boundaries because unfortunately there are a few bad apples that cross the line. Kudos to all that take the time to coach. Trying to balance the needs of the athlete, the pressure of the parents that think their kid is an all star, and the pressure of the school to show some wins, is not an easy task.
Thank you for the great comment! You’ve nailed it-coaching involves much more than just filling a spot. Certification, like what’s required in Canada, is a fantastic way to build both skills and safety awareness, which can really set a coach up for success. Certifications are not required in the US, but schools and USATF require courses for coaches. Balancing athletes' needs, parents' expectations, and school goals is challenging but so rewarding. Kudos to all dedicated coaches out there making a positive impact!
And yet Sydney has the world record and has destroyed Femke every time they’ve raced .
And yet Femke Bol is reigning: World, European, Dutch, and Diamond League Champion. Femke owns 20 of TOP 50 fastest times ever recorded over 400mH. Sydney owns 12 of TOP 50. Both are tied at 9 fastest times of TOP 20.
They have only been on the same track 3x in history.
Not a hurdle/track guy but I love sports science. I’m guessing he is moving his center of mass in excess vertically. Easier to see on the second hurdle, but I think he’s wasting energy by dipping down and jumping straight up rather than keeping his torso more horizontal. Maybe he just jumped a bit early on the second one, idk 😅
Femke Bol is the world's top hurdler. Reigning World Champion at World Athletics Championships. Current and 4-time Title Holder Wanda Diamond League. European Athletics Champion. Dutch National Champion.
Lol...Top2 Hurdler in the World and this Guy gives His dumb opinion....
This looks really good. Do you have any advise of doing this with a larger group? Now you make the distance between hurdles for this athlete specifically. How would I coach this for a group with different distances between hurdles? Thank you!
I’m glad to hear about your coaching journey and interest in learning more about hurdles! It's inspiring to know you’re dedicated to developing young athletes effectively. Tackling Hurdle Training for Groups Training groups of athletes in hurdles requires strategic adjustments, especially when dealing with athletes at different skill levels. Here’s how you can structure your sessions for a group: 1. Group Size and Dynamics When coaching hurdles, it's manageable to have 5-8 athletes per coach, allowing for individualized feedback. In these cases, I have multiple lanes with the hurdles spaced out differently for the various abilities. With a larger group, try dividing athletes into smaller groups based on skill level or specific needs (e.g., beginners focusing on basics vs. intermediate hurdlers working on technique). 2. Gender Differences Boys and girls can train together initially, especially during introductory drills focusing on technique. The hurdle height and spacing will eventually differ, but keeping them together helps build confidence and cohesion. As they progress, consider separating the groups for more specific work based on hurdle height and spacing, which is crucial for correct technique and rhythm. 3. Progression-Based Training Start with simple drills that emphasize correct hurdling form and rhythm, using shortened distances and lower hurdles to build confidence. Gradually increase the distance and height as athletes improve, mirroring what I did in the "Can She Learn to Hurdle" series. Balancing Hurdle and Multi-Event Training At ages 12-16, it's common for athletes to train across multiple events, which helps develop general athleticism. It’s beneficial to expose athletes to multiple events early on but identify those who show promise in hurdles and are interested in specializing. If some athletes are enthusiastic about hurdles, consider adding a hurdle-focused session once a week in addition to general training. Need More Personalized Help? If you're not already on my mailing list (gotten one of my freebies), you should. I have some exciting things happening soon: a free app for hurdle drills and training plans. Total hogwash. I don't see it. His leg in the Olympics was nearly disastrous. He was competing against world class, grown men. There's also Walaza of South Africa who runs the same way. It works for him too since he's now world junior champion in both 100m & 200m.
You don't change anything regarding his running mechanics. 44.21 isn't too shabby. Coach, you laid everything out. Hopefully, he will go to college then turn pro. Alot of kids think they are ready but they are not. I year college is good. Christian Miller just signed a contract with Puma. You have to really read those contracts. You end up with nothing.
College often breaks their bodies down and they never achieve what they could have because they get burned out or injured. For track it's not necessarily better to go to college first.
44.20
his lighter weight probably helps as well, less energy expended compared to his heavier counterparts.
I think you are correct on all points. I have been following Quincy since his age-group days; his club and high school coaching has always been sprint oriented, which has obviously been ok considering what he has achieved. His cadence/turnover is not great, he almost looks awkward in short sprints. Although he is a good high school 100m sprinter and even better in the 200m, he is nowhere near as fast in those events relative to his 400m performances. Quincy has a very long stride and tremendous sprint-endurance, he could be a world class 800m runner right now if he worked at it. At the next level, he will almost certainly become a 400/800 athlete. He is only going to get but so much better in the 400m, albeit he does not need to get much better to make a living in that event. To be clear, Quincy is going to become a great 400m sprinter, but how great he becomes will be limited by his lack of raw speed. Very much like the great Steve Lewis and Quincy Watts for example, they ran very fast 400s, but topped out in their early 20s. Both of those athletes had no credible senior level 100m performances and were barely world class in the 200m. Whereas athletes like Michael Johnson and Wade Van Niekerk for example, they were pure sprinters, capable of running sub-10 in the 100m. Johnson and Niekerk set 400m records in the 400m and continued to get better into their late 20s. With all that said, Quincy Wilson is obviously going to be a great 400m sprinter; however, he can be an even greater 800m runner. Once he leaves the tutorlege of his current coaches, you will almost certainly see him running some 800s. Personally, I think if he gets in some 800m specific training, I would not be surprised if runs some crazy fast 800s in high school.
@@michaelmurray6351 wow! Thanks for the info!
Idk people talking about form, obviously coaches have tried to addressed his form yet he runs faster in free form. Nobody fixed Micheal Johnson’s either yet both are faster the men with perfect form. Maybe holding his form breaks something else idk. Whatever he’s doing it’s working for him.
Michael Johnson had a very upright and mechanical form that was incredibly efficient, so I'm not sure how he's an example of so-called bad form. Jeremy Wariner probably got the best form I've ever seen, but Michael Johnson's form was powerful and efficient
john out here hating 😂😂
But the coach can't teach him to run better.. Nope his lack of technice will catch up to him if he no one fixes it
My understanding from watching interviews is that the coach is aware of it and has been working with him on it.
I am sure his coach does form drills, but it is really-really hard to fix an athlete who has been doing something a certain way for many years and having success. One of the ways incoming freshmen with no running experience quickly catch up with kids coming from age-group programs is sometimes they don't have to unlearn bad habits. As Quincy progresses in his career and runs against other talented athletes, and perhaps he a few losses, he will look for little things to clean up.
@@michaelmurray6351 I agree 100% with this comment! Thanks for your input!
His technique has him at a level faster than many pros at 16. He is doing him.
