    I just turned 53 and I rem being solene when I was 39! A few younger 20 something year old guys were trying to connect with me. But because of my fear I rejected them. I look back now and regret it because at 53 men don’t consider you desirable. It’s the age in itself that is unattractive. No matter what you look like I think men consider over 50 old lady and creepy. It reminds me of that wedding scene in peaky blinders where the brothers are setting up the arrange marriage of their youngest brother and he freaks out and says “ she better be under 50 “

    The Cruel Dark special edition looks goregous! I read this Hamlet retelling called Smile and be a villain by Yves Donlon and really enjoyed it. It was an impulse purchase and I do not regret it, but I think I have to revisit the original play to fully appreciate it because I'm sure I missed a lot of references. I also read Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland and I need the sequel so bad. I guess one book that disappointed me that I had super high hopes for was Stoneblind by Natalie Haynes. I didn't hate it, but there is definitely less Medusa in the book than I expected.

    • @SandrasLibrary
      @SandrasLibrary 18 дней назад

      !!! I’ve been so curious about Five Broken Blades and I think you’ve convinced me to pick that one up. I couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be a romantasy or just straight up fantasy, but I remember the synopsis sounding interesting. Had no idea it was planned to be a series! I really enjoyed Stoneblind but totally agree it was less about being from her POV and more about the circumstances involving her. That one had such an interesting storytelling style-I especially loved the chapter from the perspective of her snakes!

    • @Arisutocrat
      @Arisutocrat 18 дней назад

      @@SandrasLibrary In my opinion Five Broken Blades is a fantasy quest story with romances (there are multiple) sprinkled along the way. Some of the romance threads hit better than others and they are important to the characters, but I wouldn't say the romances are the main focus of the story, though YMMV. There were so many interesting perspectives in Stoneblind, especially those seemingly omniscient chapters from Gorgoneion. Euyrale and Stheno learning what fear is through their love for Medusa was awesome too. I almost wish Stoneblind wasn't a standalone because the way Haynes approaches these POVs is fascinating.

    It sounds like you've been having a fun reading year so far! I like your approach in just trying to be more laid back with focus on enjoyment instead of stressing over what you HAVE to read. ⏳️ I'm so glad you've gotten into Red Rising now! While I didn't love the first book as much as you did, there was still so much I enjoyed from it that made me keep going. It's great you found so much to love from it already. I had a friend who felt similar to you. I am so envious of you experiencing Golden Son/Morning Star for the first time. Incredible books and were some of my favorites last year. GS made the characters finally click for me. And MS had me realizing just how much I cared for them. I still need to read the follow up novels! 2024 has been more quality over quantity for my reading year so far. While only reading 7 books so far, they do include both Shogun and The Pillars of the Earth. Two behemoths lol. But I ended up absolutely adoring them, and they are now two of my top 3 books of all time. I havent read anything too disappointing but I didn't end up enjoying Annihilation or the first Powder Mage book as much as I had expected to. But overall, it's been an enjoyable reading year so far. I'm struggling to figure out what to read next after Pillars though! I hope the 2nd half of the year is even better for you! Keep me in the loop on your thoughts on Red Rising please!

    Why was Abe targeting Larks family at the very beggining, if he was trying to avenge his broker who was killed by Rowan?? 😂 that makes 0 sense. And also how did they know that Abe’s apartment was across the street from their apartment??

    • @SandrasLibrary
      @SandrasLibrary 21 день назад

      Abe started targeting Lark’s group one year after she slipped Lachlan’s trunk. Pages 58-59 we see Abe hatch his master plan to get back at Rowan through Lark and Lachlan. They figured out Abe was across the street bc of the eye witness account of the substitute male nurse who was last seen with Ethel, which made Lachlan remember seeing the male nurse out walking super early one morning on their street.

      @@SandrasLibrary okkkkk…. Thanks for explaining the nurse but I guess I missed it? But it still doesn’t make sense. He was clearly a stalker so which is a more reasonable explanation as to why he was on their street. I don’t get how you jump from seeing someone on your street to, oh he must be a neighbour 😂 I’ll have to re read the page where Abe hatched his master plan but trying to get to Rowan and Sloan by killing random people (non blood relations) to Lark seems a bit far removed to make sense. This is one of those series that I believe will become classic literature. I’m about 2/3 through book 6 and will probably reread series - or listen to the graphic audio - before book 7. So well written with so many things to think about during so much war and politics while characters and their relationships develop - and come back - as well as the world around them. Book 4 read relatively slow, but I knew why while reading it. You’ll understand when you get to it. It’s needed for the growth of the series. It’ll be interesting to see how far this goes for Mars, the Core, the Rim, and see if it goes further. There’s a foundation set for more, and Darrow’s story is incredible.

    Mark Lawrence is probably my favorite fantasy genre author. He is amazing in character building with a lot of depth. In a dystopian world, you should expect a dark and complex character such Jorg to emerge. As you mentioned some of the themes in your review - patriarchy. Isabelle's dad moved on and married a younger woman, had a new baby - no consideration on how this will impact his daughter. Yet he expects Solene to sacrifice her happiness and love for the sake of their daughter. That's what society also expected of her. It's so unfair. Great book, I just wish it didn't end so abruptly.

    I read this book this past week and it's been just as good as I expected since I heard about it! I loved this characters so much! And I agree with you, the book is way more about their relationships with each other than the fantasy plot. If you have any other recommendations of fantasy books with polyamorous relationships/throuple I would love to know! Or other genres would be fine too. This book looks stunning!! Unfortunately they aren't shipping it to my country yet :(

      Have you read the Ravenhood trilogy by Kate Stewart? Book 1 is Flock, 2 is Exodus, 3 is Finish Line. It is not fantasy, but I love that trilogy so much. If you have not heard anything about it, do NOT look it up. Go into it completely blind! 🖤

    Loved your review almost as much as I loved the book. I have not been a Leigh Bardugo fan; I tried Ninth House, but only read the first few chapters; I only watched the first episode of "Shadow & Bone." When I learned that this book would be set in Madrid, just after 1588, I had to read it! I have been an hispanophile most of my life. In your review you expressed many of the feelings the book evoked in me. Thank you!

      Ah, that is super nice of you to say!! I’ll take it! I’ve been enjoying her adult work much much more than her YA, although I do find her Grishaverse pretty imaginative and love me some Darkling 🤣 Ninth House got better and better for me as I went along and I think I enjoyed Hell Bent even more. I’m a huge fan of her Language of Thorns collection-she’s very talented as a dark fairy tale tone of writer, which The Familiar channels a lot of, I think. She’s definitely got me interested in finding more Spanish stories, so if you have any recs, I’d love to hear them!

    I’m obsessed with this book too rn and am so happy to find videos of people discussing it as passionately as I loved it. I don’t think I’ll ever recover?? I’m usually the type of person who finishes a book and then goes “ok great, next”, but I have been thinking about it nonstop since I finished it last week. So much so that I too reread it and listened to the audiobook. I don’t think I’ve ever done that before. The feelings this book made me feel, the highs and lows, the passion, the lessons on womanhood and valuing yourself, are just so special. LOL I’m just rambling now but I just needed to share my thoughts with someone since idk anyone personally who has read it. If you have any recommendations for books that are on the same level as this please let me know because right now I can’t imagine finding anything soon that will top it

      Ugh, I love your comment! Okay-it's been like a month, if not more, since I read it, and I STILL can't stop thinking about it! I also immediately reread and listened to the author narrate the audiobook, which was exceptional. I agree with everything you said-the themes and characters, and the love story itself were so unique and incredibly well done that I haven't been able to find anything else that hits like this did. Just the character depth and how art and music were interwoven into the story were so fascinating to me! Did you watch the movie? I did watch it and ADORED it despite the wildly different ending, but I feel like they both have their own place! If you're open to films that hit a similar vein, you might really like the Before film trilogy with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. All 3 of them have masterful scripts! If I find a comparable book, I'll share! hahahaha

    • @mara1

      @@SandrasLibrary I actually saw the movie first, and thought it was so cute. When I realized it was based on a book I knew I had to read it, and am SO glad I did. And I totally agree, the book & movie are each good in their own way, even though I wish the movie stayed a little more true to the source material (like Solene being more sophisticated, Izzy’s age, them meeting up in different cities instead of her following him, but that’s probably much harder to squeeze in a 2 hr film haha) And I LOVE the Before trilogy, some of the best romance films ever made!

    • @SandrasLibrary
      @SandrasLibrary Месяц назад

      @@mara1 YES. I wish they would've kept Izzy's age younger and stuck with Solene's French-raised artistic depiction. I also kind of wish they would've kept Hayes at 20 rather than 24-it seemed more...not profane, but scandalous perhaps? Just even more of an uphill battle for Solene! You know, there were 2 things not in the movie that upset me a little: first was Solene comforting Hayes with that beautifully stated quote on art. And second was her birthday (in Paris, maybe?). In the movie, they made her turn 40 immediately, but in the book, Hayes had such an integral part of making her 40th birthday/last day in her 30s such a special moment, I was so sad it wasn't in there! But there were many moments like that between the two of them I was bummed to not see, but I still enjoyed the movie! I saw recently that Robinne Lee has finished writing another manuscript after several several years of battling imposter syndrome and doubt, and I'm hopeful her next book will be just as deep and thoughtful! I'm definitely a reader for life.

    • @mara1
      @mara1 Месяц назад

      @@SandrasLibrary Yes to all of the above!! Another thing I wish they included was the saying ILY in Paris/aspen instead of the end. So many missed opportunities in the movie, I wish Robinne had at least some say in the script, but oh well it is what it is. I had no idea she was writing another book, it’s going straight to the top of my tbr as soon as it comes out. Also reader for life!!

      Totally understandable-there is nothing like feeling and smelling a book! I’ve just gotten to a point where I love thick books but I do not love hefting a heavy tome around because it hurts my wrists and I can never get comfortable, especially with hardcovers. I prefer the look of hardcovers but prefer the experience with paperbacks. (But shhhhh…don’t tell anyone-I’ve actually come to favor reading on my kindle bc it’s so damn convenient and I read much faster using one!) I think they’re worth the investment! Audiobooks can be hit or miss with me but I love them for traveling or working out. I’m obsessed with the popularity of GraphicAudio and how that’s changing the audio landscape because it really is a superior listening experience!
