Chaol may be the most disappointing character I've come across in a book or series. Not because he's poorly written or anything, but because he so often makes the wrong choice, or doesn't act at all. I know there are a lot of books to go in the series, but I hope he gets it together and becomes a better ally for Celaena. I really enjoyed this week's discussion, LOVED the longer runtime, and obviously appreciated the shoutout. I'm looking forward to jumping into Heir of Fire and part 1 of that discussion on Tuesday!
This is something I've been thinking about a lot too lately. I think it comes down to a blind, deep-rooted love that Chaol shares for Dorian as a brother figure. Chaol has never gotten on with his own family (and likewise with Dorian), and they've known each other so long that Chaol's blind loyalty for Dorian bleeds into carrying out the King's every whim, thereby protecting the institution of their family's empire in order to be Dorian's protector if that makes sense. I wasn't bothered so much by Chaol years ago when I first read this, but it's downright grinding my gears now. SO glad you heard your shoutout! You're a big reason we're having so much fun with this readalong (and why we sprinkle in an on-screen 'SHIP' or 'SHIPPING' at every mention hahahaha)! Have you started the Heir of Fire reading?
@@SandrasLibrary I think that makes perfect sense, and it would explain Chaol's numerous instances of misplaced loyalty. He may love Celaena, but that hasn't been enough to put her first over the needs of Dorian and the empire. I know I've said it before, but you played a big part in rekindling my love for reading, and this readthrough has turned that up to 11. I'll always have enthusiasm for my two favorite Maas-ochists! Not yet, but I plan on starting within the next couple of days. I'm still coming down from that Tomorrow x3 high 🤣🤣🤣
