I love photography and in my videos I cover everything from landscapes to street and wildlife to portraits.
I’m a graphic designer by day, with a fine art background, so I’ve already got a pretty creative outlook, but I discovered a new love for photography back in 2018. Since then, I’ve been developing my technique; learning new skills, trying out tricks, and just having fun with it.
You’ll find me out and about with my Nikon Z7 or D500 showing you my process and camera settings. Or sometimes I'm back at home showing you post-processing tips, AI tools and tricks or tutorials about various aspects of photography and printing.
I’m still at the start of this adventure, but I’m here to share what I learn with you as I go, and maybe inspire you to take your own photography to the next level.
I usually post a new video weekly, on Sunday morning at 10am (GMT).

Are Vintage Lenses Better?
Some poeple will swear to you that vintage lenses are better than modern ones. So I'm trying out some Minolta lenses from the 70s with my Nikon Z7 and seeing what kind of results I can get with them.
Join me for some woodland photography at Padley Gorge in the UK's Peak District as I try them out.

What I Learnt From Editing a Raw Image in Photoshop Elements
Great tutorial on blending shots. Is Lightroom and Photoshop only available now on a yearly subscription plan? I have a ten year old edition of Photoshop on my Mac and don't fancy having subscriptions to new software where I have to keep paying year after year. I know there are continual updates, but are older versions on disc or direct download still functional enough to do basic editing? Thanks for your great channel!
It's been so long since I used a disc based version of Photoshop, I'm afraid I can't remember! Adobe products are certainly expensive. I may look into free alternatives for stacking shots. Hopefully there are some good options out there. Thanks for supporting the channel. 😊
I bought the Nikon Z8 and after 2 weeks I started having problems with the view finder. I had it set for auto switching mode and when the screen turned off I turned it back on and I couldn’t see the back screen to review my pictures. I had to change the screen settings back every time. Now I’m getting the Nikon D500 to shoot with. I’m not spending a lot of money again on a camera.
Very interesting to hear - I wonder if you got unlucky, or if there is a wider issue with the switching. I've never had an issue with my Z7. I must say, I am tempted to get a Z8! Thanks for watching. 😊
Creating cool wallpapers? I guess that something, what about the rest of the photos you take?
Can l use on iPad with pencil.
Thanks, I just ordered the new Z50ii same beautiful and capable sensor as the d500 but with the same processor as the Z 8 & 9 but lighter and less expensive zooms.
Sounds interesting - I'm sure there must be compromises compared to the Z8/9 but sounds like decent specs in the image quality department. Thanks for watching. 😊
How does this lens compare with the zdx 50-250? I am using this lens with my z30 and an FTZ adapter. I was wondering whether the zdx 50-250 would be an upgrade or not. My comparison points would be sharpness, colour reproduction and how quick and accurate the autofocus is. I dont see anything on youtube or the general internrt comparing these 2 lenses.
Which lance ?..
Do you mean the lens? It's the Nikkor 300mm F4 PF. 😊
No ! Vintage lenses are not better ! I have many "vintage" lenses, fx Leica R Canon FDn, Tamron SP and more. It is logic that todays Lenses are better, tecnology have come farther and specially software to calculate the optical Lens design have come far !
Yes, a lot of modern lenses are certainly very good. I particularly like the Nikon Z lenses. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. 😊
@@Robert-Bishop I like Voigtländer Lenses
I read an interview with a Canon exec a few years ago (probably 10+) on Ken Rothwells site. He answered a question about their 2.8 L series wide angle which had some fall off in the corners. His response was along the lines of 'if the corners need to be perfectly sharp at 16mm then it's because there's nothing interesting in the middle'. It stuck with me because I thought it was rather defensive and arrogant, many years later I realise it was good advice! Canon of course upgraded the model with sharper corners and people forked out the £000's for it, the modern day marketing genius of sharpness at work. Completely agree with you on it though, horses for courses. I have a couple of 25 year old + lenses that have fabulous IQ, I wouldn't use them for a wedding though as the focussing motors aren't quick enough. (Nice to see Padley's still holding onto a bit of colour.)
Yeah, it's a good point! There are some niche situations where I think it matters, like astro and keeping the stars sharp in the corners, but I think the point still stands. I bet you could get some nice wedding shots with the vintage ones, but I can imagine you need the reliability that comes with modern lenses. And yeah, Padley's still good for the moment. Cheers for watching mate. 😊
Hello! Great video. Could you tell me internal measurements of the main compartment? Length, width and depth? Please in advance :)
I love the old 70-200mm as well, it's one of those lenses that doesn't test well, but looks superb in real life. Corner resolution rarely matters with a tele lens, it's usually out of focus anyway. Beware failing AF motors if buying one now though, once they die you can't even manual focus! Mine is on the way out. The only "better" lens I own is an old 105mm f/2.5, but the hit rate is a lot lower without AF.
Motor and VR seems alright so far, although the latter is quite noisy. Haven't tried the 105, will have to look out for that one. Thanks for watching. 😊
More than fifty years ago, I worked and lived in Grindleford. However, that's not the real name of the village. Its real name is Padley, and its divided into upper and nether Padley. Grindleford is the name of the bridge.
Very interesting John. To be fair Google maps does list it as Nether Padley but I didn't know about it being the name of the bridge. Nice cafe too. Thanks for watching. 😊
Now this is one that I have got to find out how I can share it with a person I knew quite well many years ago. He would use nothing other than older lens for just the glass alone. His claim is that many of the newer lens are all plastic. Not sure as I am no expert on that. But it sure can bring up people taking sides pretty quickly! lol Well, now I'm not going to pay attention to the lens at all and take in all the area has to offer and find joy just in seeing good 'ol Otis running free and enjoying his life to the full!
That's true Bruce - the build quality is another reason to like the vintage lenses, and they're not necessarily any heavier because they generally contain less glass than the modern ones. Padley is like a playground for the dogs. I'm sure Otis #1 would love it! 😊
I'm perfectly fine with the lack of scientific rigour in this video. If it was all about photographing those black and white charts, I'd probably click away as soon as I woke up from my coma. 😆 Vintage SLR lenses are a bit before my time, but I was surprised by how much I like the manual aperture and focus process, regardless of quality. I have a small collection of varying quality (nothing absolutely impeccable, i.e. nothing very expensive), was playing about with my latest, a Tokina zoom, in the last shreds of golden hour today. Soft as butter in a summer heatwave, but lovely colours. So much so that I had to switch the photo style from 'vivid' to something duller! Honestly, the worst thing about them, is having to change the IBIS FL settings with old zooms when I'm handholding. Oh, and the fact my M43 cameras turn everything into a telephoto. 😅
Yes, good point about preferring the function on vintage lenses - that's something I should have mentioned in the video. I suppose it's something about the interaction with the lens and feeling more directly in control compared to autofocus lenses. Not sure I'd fancy it for bird photography though! Thanks for watching. 😊
Great video Rob, I bought a used G2 version of the 70-200 2.8 Nikkor earlier this year for some Osprey photography and love the performance and images I have been getting from it.
Thanks Paul - hope you got some great shots of the Ospreys. 😊
Love some of the vintage lenses I bought during lockdown. Not too fussed about everything being pin sharp, with my eyesight not being what it should be ... Out at Padley Gorge on Tuesday, looking forward to snapping whatever is left of the autumn colour and sunlight on the silver birch trees nearby. Thanks for the vlog, much appreciated.
Thanks Steve. Still plenty of autumn colours left. Have fun. 😊
Quality aside I find vintage lenses more fun to use and that for me is way more important than edge sharpnesses etc. I would however draw the line on the vintage curtains in your van. 😂
I'll not tell Andrea, as she made those! We love them. 😊 Just as fun as the lenses!
@ Oops!
I thought you were going to go all Thomas Heaton on us there Robert, and start making your food in the camper van. As for vintage lenses from the SLR era, there are some good and bad lenses out there. Some vintage lenses like the helios 55mm are coveted for their quirks. I think vintiage glass suits mirrorless cameras very well as you often have inbody stabilisation that dslrs didn't have. As long as aren't shooting wildlife or sports or some other subject where you need to use autofocus they offer good image quality for not a lot of money. I think you proved you can get great images from them.
I did think about it Andrew, and then I could have done a cinematic coffee brew in the morning! 😁 I'll stick to photography though, I think. Good point about the image stabilisation - I had it turned off while on the tripod, but very useful for handheld. Cheers for watching. 😊
Morning Robert - I have the 70-200 and it’s a cracker ! A few interesting points in here - I have a 35mm prime which I think I’ll try out after you mentioned being good in really low light - I was out on Friday in the woodlands and it was surprisingly dark so well worth a go. When I was out , like you, there was still plenty colour so after Thomas Heatons autumn struggle maybe he should join us in the Peak District or Lancashire 😂 Finally you mentioned focus peaking which I need to check out and see if available on my D5300 !! Great spot and lovely images - it’s been a very still and warm past few days (just missing the mist !) All the best mate 👍🏻
In the end I didn't need the wide aperture of the 50mm as it was a reasonably bright morning. During my previous foggy woodland video, it would have been very handy though. That one was particularly dark and with the polariser I was using quite high ISOs. Unfortunately I don't think the D5300 does have focus peaking. Perhaps you can zoom in using live view though? Thanks for watching Andrew. 😊
@ thanks Robert and I did Google it - it doesn’t but yes I have live view 👍🏻
Good thought. " Glass for lenses" has become more and more superior to older glass. Using vintage glass would be fun to get images that say " old".
Yeah, I think it's a personal preference thing, the same way some people prefer vinyl and others CDs (or more likely streaming these days). I'm not going to be ditching my Z lenses anytime soon, but nice to know these older lenses can still get results. Thanks for watching. 😊
Own the Z9 and D500 and I still use it occasionally and I’m hard pressed to tell much difference if any. They are holding their price still as are F mount lenses. In fact the Nikon 200-500 used seems to be going up in price. I paid £600 for mine about 4 months ago in excellent condition now they are going for over £850.
That's very interesting David - I'd quite like to get my hands on a Z9 or Z8 to put that to the test for myself! I do like the 200-500, but I tend to use a Sigma 150-600 to cover that kind of focal range. Sounds like you got a great deal for £600. Thanks for watching. 😊
For event photography I use my Nikon d500, Nikkor 17-55 and Sigma 18-35, images super sharp no problem at all.
Glad to hear it. The 18-35 is one I need to try out. Thanks for watching. 😊
Do you use a photo stacking app/program?
Just Lightroom and Photoshop. 😊
d500 memiliki optic yang jauh lebih bagus, full frame itu lebih bagus?, itu tidak benar..!
I have been researching an upgrade from my d3100 and was thinking of this d500. Everything points to how awesome it is but Nikon is not making it anymore😢. In fact they are moving away from DSLRs. Bummed here!
That's true, but there are plenty of used deals out there. The mirrorless cameras are great too though, to be fair. Thanks for watching. 😊
Thanks for this interesting and informative video, Robert. I have begun a short experiment shooting with the Canon Neutral style, which I then edit lightly in Apple Photos. My reason for doing so is that I have had trials of five mainstream processing apps, but they all render Raw files differently and sometimes not very well for the price. My thinking is that either in camera or Canon DPP for Raw software probably produces the best image quality as a starting point because no one knows more about the files than Canon. However, DPP is really clunky to use. I have also been impressed with Capture One and DXO rendering, but these are premium products at premium prices. I may end up reverting to Raw and using DXO Photolab, but I think this will be an interesting test. I don’t think enough attention is given overall to the initial Raw file rendering quality. What’s the point of lots of bells and whistles in apps if the base rendering is poor?
Mirrorless wins for video. DSLR stills wins for photos. D500 is a beast. I have 3 bodies for youth sports. They are awesome with any of the pro Nikon glass.
I don’t know weather I did the first set up section right I don’t I’m like my first prints
Hi in totally new to editing. Do you have any videos for beginners? I want to learn how to edit and what each different tool/module does to a pic. You have anything which may help? Most tutorials online assume u know how to edit already and coming from another software
Nice photos! The last one is especially fantastic; reminds me a bit of Ansel Adam’s photos in some way. :)
That's very kind, thank you, and thanks for watching. 😊

Hi Robert. I’m new to printing out photos but would love to know if you have a video showing how to print a photo onto A3 phot paper on the Epson xp975? Could I do it from Procreate? My other query is that I’m printing out photos from my iPad with my Epson just from my photo gallery on my iPad and the printer seems to be cutting off a chunk of the picture and I don’t know how to rectify this. Could you offer any advice please? Very many thanks. 😊

Excellent reasons. Thanks for watching. 😊

Great, I'll check them out, thanks. 😊
I love your channel, Robert. What you're doing here may be art, but it doesn't satisfy the definition of photography that I live by: a moment in time from the real world. It's digital (or computational) image manipulation. Photoshop's editing tools are artificial constructs. When you use layers, cloning, etc., you exit the realm of photography. I strongly object to photographers who, for example, use sky replacement and then pass off what they've done as landscape photography. I have to compete with such people at Getty Images and it's unfair that I don't falsely manipulate my images, yet they do without disclosing it. It's like shooting in a zoo and passing off your photos as if you went on African safari. Zoo photographs are fine if you say your animals are captive. So are all the things you're doing to this image. Just don't claim it's a landscape photo.
Thanks Rob. I think this touches on what I was talking about at the end of the video. I am happy to label an image differently. I would say it's a landscape image that has primarily been created photographically but also manipulated digitally. Thanks for watching. 🙂
If your photography is to showcase a beautiful scene, whether it’s a natural setting or scenery, a portrait of someone (with a shitty background), a building or street with litter, garbage, scaling paint, etc…cropping to improve upon it…..is Kool in my humble opinion!
Much appreciated. How do you feel about generative AI and adding things to the image that would not have otherwise been there?
Hi Robert, like 32 here for you from Newfoundland, Canada!
An interesting debate Robert. Having also watched that smaller channel ;) I believe there is no right or wrong answer. Creativity and artistic intent are down to the photographer and the edit style assist in the final production of what one wants to convey in the final piece of art. AI on the other hand is a different world altogether. Personally I will continue to remove dust spots, unwanted clutter , people sometimes and to use the power of LR and PS to create the final photograph that represents what I saw / imagined / intended. I won't be misleading in my images with AI. Amen
Yeah, generally agree with you there Andrew. When I occassionally do use gernative AI, I make sure to add a note under the image. And I'm happy to call it a hybrid photo/digital image at that stage. Thanks for watching. 🙂
I actually don't mind the "distraction " bro to be honest. I think it adds to a great haunted/mystical wood look
Yeah, I guess some people wouldn't mind - that's the great thing about art being subjective. For me, it just felt like an obstruction. I feel like I want to walk into the scene, but always end up mentally tripping over the branches! 😂
I sometimes remove items from a scene, stray bits of litter, an annoying twig that creeps in from a corner and the occasional unwanted lamppost, etc. Basically, the things that distract you and stop you from enjoying the image. It's a far cry from AI editing and sky replacement, but I can see why some may still call it cheating. It depends on what you want to convey. James Popsys, who I think Thomas referred too enjoys encorporating man made elements into his landscape photography. I often look at some of his work, and as much as I like his photography, I think if I took that photo, people would ask why I left those elements in the composition. A good demonstration of the techniques involved Robert.
Yeah, of course, if you choose to purposfully keep those things in, then it's an equally valid artistic. choice. I guess that's the beauty of photography, and art in general, it can mean something completely different from one person to the next. Cheers for watching. 🙂
Enjoyed your video very informative and I think that with out doubt I agree with you if it is required then clone but do not over clone a good capture. 🐕👍👌👏
Musch appreciated John. No, I think ideally, no cloning is best, but sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do! Cheers for watching. 🙂
a superb lens is the Nikkor 40mm F2.8 Micro AFS DX....Is a real 1 to 1 macro on top of being a super shar equivalent of 60mm crop factor. And is not too expensive I bought mine on eBay for $119 in mint conditions.
Great recommendation, it's definitely one I need to try out. I have heard good things before though. Thanks for watching. 😊
Hi Robert, thanks for the vid. How did you manage to print on A3? I am trying to get an excel sheet printed on A3, not been able to. Any ideas on how i can go about it?
I like rawtherapee but the having to view at 100% is the deal breaker for me..

What has advanced over the last number of years is the lighting systems now available...l have just bought a couple of Godox 6Bi lights for exactly the reason you demonstrate...Small, compact, intensity and colour temp' can be altered ... Perfect for the job....Thanks for Info...Greetings from España.
Great. Thanks for the recommendation and checking out the video. 😊
Thx for the video... One question Can i just buy one Varta CR1/3N battery and do the same thing with aluminum foil on the other slot? I think this CR1/3N wouldn't even need any modification to fit in there..But I haven't tried it yet
This isn't a battery I'm familiar with, but I just did a quick Google and it looks like it would work, yeah. 2 would be too much voltage, but I think it should work with the foil. Would be interested to hear how you get on. 😊
@@Robert-Bishop In the end, I chose the option of 2x LR44 in one slot and in the other slot a rubber through which I pierced with a metal paperclip so that it touch both contacts...A did it like 2 hours ago and it works perfectly ..It is my first film camera and i bought it for just 30 euros from the auction as "untested and without batteries"...So im pretty happy it actually works ...
Really useful video, thank you for sharing 🙂

Absolutely, I completely agree. Thanks for watching. 😊
