  • If you've never used a camera other than the one on your phone, here are 5 reasons why you should probably give a DSLR or Mirrorless camera a go.
    Join me at Langsett in the Peak District where I'm doing some landscape photography with the Nikon D500. Along the way I'll be sharing the reasons why I think smartphones can't compete with these type of cameras.

    Hi Robert. I am noticing more and more when i'm out and about or on holiday that I seem to the only one using a proper camera these days. I agree with you on image quality, and will always prefer my camera over my phone. There is just something about holding a real camera in the hand.

      Yeah, I know what you mean Clive. Obviously it comes down to the user's intentions too - some people are just out to snap memories, and a phone is probably the optimal tool there. It's not even that a phone can't get a great image (some prestigious compitition winners have been captured with a mobile phone) - but to consistently maximise the chances of getting high quality, a DSLR/Mirrorless is definitely the way to go. And you're right, it just feels better! Thanks for watching. 🙂

    Great video Robert. My cellphone has saved me a couple of times when I've not brought my camera, but you're right, there are just so many options available with a proper camera. I took some photos today on a hike with both cellphone and camera - I was happy with the cellphone shots until I edited my camera photos... absolutely no comparison. You got some really nice photos despite the harsh light. And always fun to watch Otis run around! Hope ya'll had a great Easter!

      Cheers Paul. Yeah, I think it's about knowing the limitations. At the photography group I'm a member of, we find that we don't get many younger people interested in joining and that is maybe down to a lack of understanding when it comes to cameras other than phone cameras. Although I think it's absolutely fine to capture images with a phone, I just wanted to highlight what other types of camera can offer. I've had covid over easter, so it hasn't been the best! Haha. Hope you had a good one though. 🙂

    I was waiting all through the video for the line “the best camera is the one you have with you” Robert 😂 QED! Great point about the younger generation and as I think I mentioned before my daughter has recently started using my old OM10 which by the way appears to be working fine after I shot a roll of film - appears much to the disappointment of my daughter to have been user error ! Anyway hope you’ve enjoyed the Easter break and all the best 👍🏻

      Thanks Andrew - yeah definitely better to get a phone shot that no shot. Although you do always have that niggling feeling that you would have gotten an even better shot if you'd have had your 'real' camera! 😀 Really glad you got the OM10 working. I've got a little Minolta Hi-Matic compact I'm going to try out at some point. Hope you're having a good one mate - cheers for watching. 🙂

    Great video Robert, I agree that the DSLR or Mirrorless cameras are the best for the job and the benefits are endless but it is handy to have your smartphone. The Nikon Z6 is a great camera and I am very pleased with it so using as much as I can not smartphone. Great to see Otis really enjoying himself. 🐩

      Thanks for watching John. Yeah, I think there's a place for both, and you're obviously aware of the differences and limitations. The problem, I think, is that some people just aren't aware of these things, and simply overlook DSLR/Mirrorless options. Otis did have a really good time, but since then has pulled a muscle, so has to be on the lead for 2 weeks! Not sure he's that happy about it! 😂

    I was shooting a waterfall in one of our national parks one day with my DSLR and a 70-200mm lens, all mounted on a tripod so I could slow the shutter speed to get that nice, silky smoothness in the water. A guy wanders up and asks, "So what can you get with that fancy rig that I can't get with my phone?"
    I showed him the image I'd just taken via the LCD screen, and he yelled out, "Holy cr@p!!" He then called to his wife, "You gotta see this photo!!" She came over, looked at my LCD, and had about the same reaction.
    The point is that people don't know. They think they're getting great images, even though we know they could do better. Interestingly, neither the guy nor his wife were really interested in how the photo was created. They asked, but once I said, "You have to slow the shutter speed way down," they were finished. Shutter speed? What is that?
    In all fairness, my son has a DSLR, but never uses it. Neither he nor his wife are interested in anything more than snap shots, whether those images are of their kids, or the places they've been and the things they've done. He will come right out and say, "The DSLR is too much hassle -- I have to shoot the photo then transfer it to my phone to show my friends." Instead, he just shoots with his phone and shows with his phone. Boom, done.

    • @Robert-Bishop
      @Robert-Bishop  3 месяца назад +1

      Absolutely Don - the ability to change shutter speed is a perfect example of the type of benefit I wanted to highlight here. I should have probably made a long expsoure shot as an example, but I didn't have a tripod with me.
      Phones do have the edge when it comes to sharing images, so I suppose if ease and speed of sharing is a priority, that's a point to smartphones. I wonder if we'll see a Mirrorless Camera with 5G at some point?!
      Many thanks for watching. 🙂

    I always prefer shooting on a camera rather than a phone - even a point and shoot, bridge camera or dslr.
    As impressive, though modern phones are, I do find the results a bit sterile - I presume as I haven't had a huge input into the image.

    • @Robert-Bishop
      @Robert-Bishop  3 месяца назад +1

      I was going to include bridge cameras when talking about other cameras but then it was making the first point about interchangable lenses complicated, so I just left it out. I think they benefit from all the other points though - so as you say, much more input than a with a phone. Thanks for watching Andrew. 🙂

    belivee me i'd love to have a proper camera, but even old second hand ones get expensive. the jump in quality is fantastic though, definitly. it's almost like cheating. good camera's already make photos exponentially better even without technical knowledge on settings and post-editing.

    • @antonvoloshin9833
      @antonvoloshin9833 3 месяца назад +1

      Well, actually the thing is that nowadays old cameras and lenses are quite inexpensive, while still very capable. Say something like used Nikon D300 + Nikkor dx 35mm f,1.8G you can fit in 300, even 250 euros, and despite it's age this is still an awesome combo which beats the socks out of any modern smartphone, which is 3 or 4 times more expensive.

      @@borneoorangutan Well... I'd say that the lowest you can sensibly go is something like D200 body, around 80-90 eur used, and either 35mm dx 1.8G or 50mm 1,8 af/d nikkors - either can be found around 70-80 eur. Also a good combo and a decent basis for future growth. You also can find 18-55mm dx kit lens for 30-40 eur which is okay-ish for a start too.
      But this, I believe, is as low as you can go without serious compromises, not free, yes, but really cheap. I understand that everyone has their different situations and struggles, but hope this little rundown will help or maybe inspire you.

      That's really old-school Bruce! I can imagine it's a blessing in many ways though. 🙂 Otis had a great time - but since then he has enjoed himself a bit too much and pulled a muscle or damaged a ligament it seems. The vet has said it's 2 weeks on the lead and anti-inflammatory medication! Not sure he's happy about it - but better to get it fully fixed. Thanks for watching. 🙂
