  • Generative AI can be a controversial subject for photographers, but in this video I'm looking at a new Photoshop feature that can take our own photography as a reference to help enhance our images in a way that feels more authentic than pure generative AI.

Good video, Robert. I have two perspectives. For me, as a photographer, it takes away the joy of nailing a great image in camera. That said, how many folk out there will use this feature without declaring it.
From a work related standpoint, as a designer, this is gold as we often have to work with images that aren't exactly what we are looking for.

Thanks Andrew. Absolutely - it can be so much quicker to write a prompt than to trawl through hundreds of stock images to find something appropriate. That's both amazing and also a little sad, as I can see it being the demise of stock photography. I'm still going to keep trying to nail it in camera, and will probably still fail often! 😄

Great video Robert, as always very informative this looks like a good tool if you’re stuck with the image. 🐕👍

Much appreciated John. Yeah, I think I'd only use it in 'emergencies' but could really save certain images. Thanks for checking it out, as always. 🙂

A very interesting take on generative AI. Personally, I feel photography falls into two categories, recording what you see and creating art. I am in the first category so therefore not a big fan of AI. However what you’ve done here is recorded what you saw but not when you hit the shutter. For me this is an acceptable use of generative fill. Photography is so subjective. Thanks for a great video.

I agree Alan - I don't think this is appropriate for journalism, documentary, record or anything that requires the most truthful representation possible, but for creating art it's amazing! My day job is graphic designer and these tools have completely changed the way I work. Many thanks for checking out the video. 😊

Some pretty cool stuff!! Will be very interesting to see where it all leads to in a few years as AI capabilities seem to be growing exponentially.

Yeah, it's moving along at an incredible pace Bruce. I'm not worried about it replacing photography though - I think it will just sit alongside it (and cross over with it in many ways) as an alternative method of image creation. Thanks for watching. 😊

Tried the generative AI after watching your original video Robert and created an interesting composite based on an image taken at Bamburgh Beach - up another level here and whatever anyone's thoughts on AI it's as you say, here to stay! Would I use it ? Well as demonstrated it's less of a cheat but cheating nonetheless but there may well be occasions it has a place and if disclosed you are not deceiving anyone - all the best and take care mate.

Yeah, the important thing for me, is the not deceiving people. Where I use AI on the images in my videos, I add a note saying so. I also wouldn't use it for images that need to be a true (as possible) representation of reality - documentary/record etc. Thanks for watching Andrew. 😊

It crazy what can be done with AI. Wonder what our younger selves would of thought if we could go back in time and say what photoshop has become.

I remember having my mind blown by the magnetic lasso tool! I can't imagine what I would have made of generative AI! Haha. Thanks for watching mate. 😊

Call me old fashioned but when ya miss the decisive moment you miss it. That's part of the life of a street photographer. To then try to use AI to recreate it is no longer the art of photography. Not saying people shouldn't do it, it's just not how I want to roll. I will admit the new AI removed tool in ACR is amazing. I can get the same effect in various ways in Photoshop but this just makes the process easier. That seems different from putting things into an image with AI that weren't in the capture.

I agree Phillip. I think this type of thing needs to be categorised as image creation through photography + digital generation. With that categorisation it's not "wrong" to use these methods, but if creating an image through photography alone it would be. Thanks for watching. 😊
