    I’ve had worse luck with deer running off with the 270, 30-06, and 7 mag, than with the smaller faster calibers, 243, 6.5 creed and PRC. I use 130 eldm’ s at 2950 out of a creedmoor, and to me it’s the ideal compromise for deer size game, out to 400 yrds.

    If you take the 260 rem, 6.5 × 55, or the CREEDMOOR and you use the wrong bullets this problem you mentioned is plainly to much bullet or is designed wrong, I have used the 129IL Hornady with a sectional density of. 264 Keeping that mind some of the heavier bullets such as 143 vldx is very soft for long shots and doesn't work well for short shots, but for deer the 129IL flat base with a .445 Co, from short to long range 500yds deer do not run and will penetrate all the way through, and so does the 125 grn partion, the Barnes tipped 120,130, nosler accubond all work great for a little bigger animals stay away from the heavier 140s or heavier unless it's elk or moose sized game, I have seen and also heard of these problems and the simple fix is what I previously mentioned, the lighter bullets travel faster and hit very hard out to 500yds and have no trouble with pass through shots, I have hunted years with the 6.5 CREEDMOOR and it works very well, or the other 6.5s until you get to the bigger gas tank cartridges pushing those heavy bullets with more energy and speed, hope this helps. Aim small, good hunting, GOD bless.

      Part of the issue is hunters using target or match ammo and not controlled expansion hunting ammo. I have guides and lodge owners telling me that it takes clients more shots to down game, or game is wounded, runs off not to be recovered, with the 6.5 Creedmoor than all over cartridges combined. Thank you very much for the advice, I'm planning a cross country trip through Canada and I'll be in the Yukon during spring. I was planning on using (sorry for the copy paste) 12 GA SST® Slug 300 gr FTX®. What do you think of that round against Grizzlys and polar bears?

    • @30-06john
      @30-06john 2 дня назад

      That load is better suited for deer hunting and longer ranges with shotguns. If you have to use a sabot type of round, the Hornady Superformance 12g 300gr Monoflex or American Whitetail 325gr Interlock would be better for Bear defense. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    I feel like a small primer is safer if you're gonna push your reloads to the max and beyond. Smaller primer means more brass to help contain a charge. Just like .454 Casulls parent case is .45 Colt, but .45 Colt is small pistol primer while .454 Casull uses small rifle.

    • @30-06john
      @30-06john 3 дня назад

  • @Ruteger100
    @Ruteger100 4 дня назад

    John, everyone should know this. Hornady wrote me back, after the fact of course. Thank you for contacting us. The decision was made to change the Hornady cases for the 450 Bushmaster from a small primer pocket to a large primer pocket. Cases produced from that point forward (in ammunition and as a component) will have the large pocket. This was done after extensive testing to confirm performance would not be compromised and was implemented in an effort to meet increasing demand for the cartridge. If you will be reloading with these cases, it will be necessary to keep the cases separated by pocket size, but load development will follow the same charge weights.

    I see a lot of the 10mm vs 44mag floating around still and it seems to me that it is a 10mm with 200 or 210gr vs a 44mag with 300gr, but why dont anyone test the 44 with a 200gr bullet at about 1600fps muzzle velocity? Cranked up that fast it is still more managable than the heavier loading. Noone can say that it is too light of a bullet when considering that is the weight from the 10mm. (And that is the load in the pic on my avatar ).

    • @30-06john
      @30-06john 4 дня назад

      That is an option, but the bullet would have to be a hard cast lead, not JHP as that would over expand and not penetrant enough for Bear defense. Thanks for watching!

  • @jaybailleaux630
    @jaybailleaux630 5 дней назад

    Fmj spitzer bullets will often tumble or be deflected when striking heavy bone, not reaching the vitals of heavy game or passing straight through making a pencil size hole for a very slow kill. The round nose or flat point will penitrate in a straighter line with more energy transfer. Take note what kind of cartridges and bullets work best on heavy dangerous game. The 220 grain bullet was the best available 30 cal in the old days before premium controlled expansion bullets like Nosler partitions. Plain cup and core bullets performance best in the 2200 - 2700 fps range with the high sectional density bullets penitrating best. Take note the slower 30-30 will out penitrate the 308 and 30-06 with all loaded with a 150 grain bullet because the higher velocity will cause rapid expansion and thus lesser penitration. That can give faster kills on lighter came but not necessarily on heavier game. A bullet needs to bust the shoulder bone to damage heart lung area of game animals. 223 and 243 have been known to fail to do that even on deer size game on occasion. Bullet wounding is not consistent or predictable. Premium bullets will occasionally fail.

    At that velocity it should hold together quite well. I have used them in my 30-06, but never shot anything with them. Frankly, they are essentially obsolete today. I use Nosler Partitions exclusively for hunting living game now. I think 180's in a 308 would be a very good balance between velocity and penetration. The short neck on the 308 and long boolitz cause a loss of powder capacity above 180 grains from the necessary deep seating to make 2.8" OAL. Dunt git et!! Jerry

    • @30-06john
      @30-06john 5 дней назад

      180s in a 308 are probably the best balance. But a 220 going 2275 is serious stopping power. Nosler does make a .308 220gr semi spitzer Partition bullet. Thanks for watching!

    If you're trying to prevent a grizzly from entering your tent, I wonder how that bullet would work if you seated it backwards. It might puncture the skull more readily as a flat meplat solid than a relatively soft, soft-point bullet. However, a lot of rifles won't feed rounds like that from magazine to chamber. I know this from experiments with certain flat nose cast lead slugs. Might make a good subject for a video. Thanks John!

I think its important to to look at this subject from as many aspects as possible to get a better picture. I also think there should be a honest consensus on what should be used, if in the area of moose, brown and grizzly bear. im firmly in the camp of either 44 mag, 500 s&W or 454. especially if you are alone.

    • @30-06john

    There are many excellent crimping dies on the market to prevent bullets to jump out of their cases and interfere with cylinder rotation. A taper crimp die applied properly will not allow any such movement. It's also a good idea to not fire all rounds of a cylinder and keep shooting by adding a couple of rounds to replace those that have been fired. There is too much of a chance that one round becomes subjected to repeated recoil. Regardless of how well crimped a bullet is, eventually that bullet may move...A standard precaution not to allow this to happen is to fire all the rounds of a cylinder and then add fresh ones. As it is, the last couple of rounds to be fired in a cylinder have already absorbed strong recoil several times. Good taper crimping is essential.

    How heavy of a crimp do you like to put on your 30-30 rounds?

      I follow the instructions and adjust the Lee die until the sections almost touch. Thanks for watching!

    Some are saying they are forced out of woods and mountains due to “ecological friendly” solar panels installed in mountains. Yep, they are CCP made with Uighur forced labors with sweet kickback on corrupt Japanese politicians. Also they cut down softwood forests and replace it with cedar: dire food shortage for those bears. …and hunters are aging and decreasing in number. My mother is from Iwate prefecture and I’ve seen Blackbear a few times: the kind called Tsukinowa-Guma.

      Actually, yes! I like that it aims faster when I practice my defensive drills, better trigger too. Thanks for watching!

    Love the LFC dies! I must have 15-20 of them. Will be ordering one for 32 Win SPL tomorrow. Found brass, dies and freedom seeds awhile back. Already have trimmer shellholder and pilot. I'm in business! Don't have a 32 Win SPL firearm yet but what does that have to do with anything? Love that Lee now has collet style fc dies for 357, 44 and 45 Colt. Thanks John!😊
