My Lightweight and Minimal Sony a7SIII Cinema Rig

Building out your camera rig is one part practical and one part eye candy. It’s great to show up on set with a super professional-looking camera, although in my opinion, clients are less impressed with how your camera looks and really only care about the final product. So, that makes the quality of accessories and means by which you build out your kit all the more important. Here’s how I build ...

I'm irritating & disturb with your voice , it disturbing listening you
Very helpful video. Thank you!
They need to add a 0 to the end of these views... Cause what in the delicious looking hell is this. What lights are you using for your studio shots? Shot in SLog2 - Any reason you pick it over 3? Recorded in the Ninja?? How can I not get this look for the life of me 😭
@@Cinedon I appreciate you very much. So kind. First things first, the key light was the very old Aperture 120d mk1 at probably 50%. Second things second, I had a very beautiful studio at the time with floor to ceiling windows that created incredible back light and bounce off the walls. Time of day was optimal and it had just snowed, so maybe kismet. It’s the best looking thing I’ve ever done anything, and most of it wasn’t my doing…AND THAT, MY FRIEND, IS FILMMAKING.
Just jumped in the LOXIA rabbit hole with the 21 and 35mm lenses. Zeiss knew what they were doing, after years of lugging around monster weight fast glass it is a joy using their light weight strong performing lenses!
How do you keep focus using a manual lens to video a whole building walking through the building
With it being as wide as it is, set to infinity focus and everything from center out will be in focus.
Just got one for $320 and scouring reviews after 😂
Thanks for the great video. Would you suggest it also today in 2024?
@@manfredifronzoni absolutely. I use it five to six times a week still. Great lens.
@@MattJackson_RUclips thanks a lot! Have you used it also in non-real estate contexts? My doubt in other contexts would be the manual focus…

Know this is an older video but I bought the Batis in 2015 which was two years ahead of the Sony 85/1.8. As simple as that. Bought the Sony 85/1.4 GM in late 2016. Again before the f/1.8 was available since 85mm was a key focal length to me after owning the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II. Now also own the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L. Waiting on Sony for an f/1.2 as well. Thank you and take care.
Very useful video thankyou , as a sony A1 shooter I am looking at purchasing this bit of kit . I currently use a RODE external mic in the hotshoe of the camera when recording . If I buy the Ninga five would the rode mic go into the Ninja or still in the camera for best results ? secondly can you recommend any cold shoe adaptors to connect both the Ninja and the External Mic ?
Hi, I am considering the 12mm Laowa or the laowa14mm for both photography and videography. Which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance!
If you're working small spaces much like I am, then the 12mm is the best bet.
@@MattJackson_RUclips thank you very much!
The 3D pop on the Zeiss is just insane. I don't get why people aren't aware of this phenomenon. We should all be demanding the big manufacturers (but Sony at the very least) to take notes from Zeiss and prioritize this over clinical sharpness. But it won't happen because very few talk about this and so it's not the metric manufacturers optimize for anymore save for Zeiss, sigh.
My gut tells me that manufacturers would focus production on what majority of their market demands. And I think the market is already mostly satisified with clinical sharpness for most of their photography needs. 3d pop, afterall, would be more costly to research on to nail the Zeiss standard or higher. So introducting and even educating customers on 3d pop wouldn't make sense for this particular goal in marketing. And ultimately, 3d pop is just one of many ways we can produce better photgraphs for others or even for our own personal satisfaction. I just think clinical sharpness is more cost efficient. This is just my opinion and I've been wondering, just like you, about the awareness, or possible lack thereof, regarding 3d pop vs clinical sharpness.
@@sleepyricky4826 Certainly true, I was more lamenting the situation rather than expecting any realistic change.
@@sleepyricky4826some people can’t see the pop. But once you do you can’t unsee it.
Just found this video , hoping you come back
@@IcEdUp856 thanks so much! It may happen down the road for sure. Right now I’m working on a different channel @the_cigarbar ! Thanks for the kind words!
Rode is better.
I dont get why peeps need MF on the lens when we have so many custom buttons these days, its not like they are hard to find even when looking thru the lens.
@@engjds at the time I was doing a lot of weddings. So having my hand on the lens and being able to switch easily was important to me.
If you want to impress your friends with spec sheets, buy gm master, if you want to impress them with photos, choose the Batis. Preferred the Bohka on the Batis and the contrast range. I used to hunger the low F numbers once, until I realised most of my shots were somewhere in the middle of the range anyway, rarely do you have a subject that looks better with a low depth of field. For new guys, save your money and avoid the F1.2, F1.4 etc, nothing wrong with going F2 lens or above with a decent modern camera. Boy, that GM lens to me looks ugly as sin next to the Batis, looks like forest gumps light saber.
@@engjds every day I regret selling my Batis lenses
@@MattJackson_RUclips Sorry to hear that, good news is, they are pretty damn cheap 2nd hand, to me there has always been something magical about Zeiss, but cant explain why.
@@engjds may or may not be why I’m buying them back 👍🏼
Right now the A7S III with Atomos Ninja V used are WAY cheaper than the FX3. Good luck finding a cheap FX3 or FX30. B&H Photo is your best bet. We need more cameras like the Sigma FP that can record directly to USB drives. The big brands like Sony are trying to protect their cinema camera lines.when they should be pivoting their business to what customers need, not protecting a dying line of overpriced cinema cameras. Sometimes you have to stop trying to maximize profits to be competitive.
LOVE this. Amazing video. This might be cheeky but what font are your titles?
Thank you very much. Futura font all day every day.
fantastic quality !! Really enjoyed this presentation, well done!
Thank you very much!
Little bit after a year purchasing a brand new smallrig VB99, USB-C connector has some slack, which causes loss of electrical signal, leading to power interruptions during charging through this port. I believe it requires opening up the VB99 and soldering a new USB-C port. How should I proceed? Have you ever had to open a VB99?
i use the Samyang 14mm F2.8 and is amazing, I will say is better like the loawa 12 mm
What a terrible sound I want to watch the video I can’t this sound sounds like World War II speaking microphones 😂 I think you need to make a video how to make better sound video 😂
Informative, nicely done, thank you!
Whether it's the best is debatable. The problem with this lens (and more so with the new 10mm) is that it produces an image that makes the space look too... spacious. Wouldn't your work be better served with a 17 and 24 TS-E?
Opinions tend to be debatable, I suppose.
Insightful. Thanks for your thoughtful response.@@MattJackson_RUclips
How do you use a cpl filter with this lens?
Unfortunately you can’t unless you use a clamp-style matte box. But as wide as it is that wouldn’t be advisable. I never have need for any filters on it due to the kind of work I do, however.
Best video on YT about this lens, amazing work!
Thanks so much!
What the hell with the music? I just can’t watch this! Please take this as constructive criticism.
GM is almost double the price. For the extra Bokeh it's not worth it. The deep Bokeh looks stupid to me coz people can't tell where you were, especially when traveling.
Cool
@@MattJackson_RUclipsno offense. You made a great comparison video!
I like your style, keeps someone watching.
Zeiss just render everything much better.
4 years later and I just picked up this lens, just short of mint, today for $650. Not too shabby.m Nice review, amigo.
I have been using it for a year now. Great battery.
Oh my god I'm so happy I found this video. I mean it took a while to start that intro.... And is that really your voice? Great voice! But yeah I have that v99 and I'm like what the f*** is this power button for? It bugged me so much the other day I put it down and walked away and didn't come back to it for a few days until today and now I'm like still scratching my head. It's the most perplexing thing. I'm so happy to hear I'm not the only one confused about this power button.😂
Ha! Thanks! Yeah who knows what it’s there for. At least it’s a decent battery that looks good!
@@MattJackson_RUclipsapparently the FX30 won't be powered from the V-Mount without a battery in the compartment. I see now the V99 is charging the battery that's in the compartment. So all is good. I bought this little $50 IPMan device that enables me to use my phone as a monitor with a few cool features. So I'm going HDMI out of the camera to this IPMan box that goes USB-C to my phone. The V99 is charging both the camera battery and my phone/display now :)
@@VeganLinked you can power it via USB-C from the battery or via a V-Mount plate either with d-tap to a dummy battery (which is what I do with my FX30) or USB-C.
yes, I'm powering mine, but it has to have the battery in it is all I'm saying. I'm using a Kondor Blue D-Tap to USB-C Power Delivery Cable :) @@MattJackson_RUclips
Have you ever had clients complain that it is too wide and looks unrealistic? Currently use 16-35 and prefer the look of the 12mm. Just don't want to give the wrong impressions of a property! Thanks!
Never. In fact, the photos always go over incredibly well. Never had one ask for change or adjustment!
Awesome. What about vertical video? I shoot alot of that as well. Would the 12mm be viable?@@MattJackson_RUclips
@@primepropertymediaI don’t think it would be good for vertical at all. I don’t do vertical for houses ever - it’s the least awesome way to show a space. Since we want “wide” and spacious in these shoots, may as well just use your phone for anything vertical that the client wants.
1. The Batis (on my Sony A7) contrast isn't quite enough, but women feel it is "kind." 2. Wish it had on-barrel control. 3. I find myself thinking about my Nikon 85 AF-S on my D750...a lot.
3:35 declicked aperture is good for video if you want to change aperture mid shot so it's smooth
thanks so much for the video
Team Zeiss Batis 85mm ❤
I think they are both great for different case uses especially if you’re able to have both. Zeiss being more of a travel friendly lens great for street/documentary photography and landscape work while the g master is better for studio work, portraiture as well as landscapes for those who do it professionally
Awesome job!!! Great explanatory video, I wonder what's the mound adapter for the vintage lenses like the one you pointed (Pentax Super Tacumar 135mmm) thanks in advance! Already subscribed to your channel God Bless You!
So glad i stumbled upon this review. I'm currently building my real esrate photography business and have been looking into the sony 12-24mm f4 and f2.8. Although they seem like great options, the f4 just dodgy get me excited, and the f2.8 made my wallet cringe. This seems like a good option to go with and now makes it so i can go w with the Sony PZ 16-35mm f4 I've been wanting instead. Thanks again
