      It's an amazing camera! You'll know when it's time to upgrade as the different kinds of work come in over the course of your career. Go with what works for you but get to know what you have and make it work for you - that's a philosophy I tend to follow. Best of luck to you and thanks for watching!

    My man! I am completely inspired and you made me want to stand up in my living room and give this video a standing ovation. Terrific video! Terrific work! This video has helped me in so many ways. One of them being that I purchased my a7iii camera almost a year ago. I was so excited to capture and tell stories. Then the pandemic hit. Too afraid to get out and like everyone else, just trying to make it. With everything calming down, I saw that the new a7iiis came out and it got me thinking that maybe I should sell my camera that hardly used and onto the newer model. Well you just convinced me of just how relevant my camera still is! Thank you for this my man!

      @@oimfc37 there's quite a few for me, the dynamic range was mind blowing in terms of what you can bring back in post without it falling apart. The form factor is a lot smaller and lighter, the sharpness of the images and the whole mirrorless what you see is what you get on the back of the screen none of that chirping any more. The lenses seem to be damn side sharper than the canon variants and cheaper for that matter.

    Really nice Star Wars intro you made! Damn! Hats off! I started last year October as film maker. Also bought the a7iii and Ninja V. Glad I chose the Sony eco system, with all these great new camera’s (a7Siii, FX3,...) and fabulous lenses (saving for that 24mm GM). I like your channel and the new direction you’re taking it. As a starting filmmaker, I’m interested in how you take (took) on the business side building out your brand... I also come from an industry career, turned into this, following something I really like, leaving something I was completely burned out/tired of. Never felt so good since years, even if I’m struggling now, as I’m just a beginner, not getting a lot of clients yet.
    Keep up the good work!

    Although you were "selling" the camera and Ninja, I was more impressed with YOU. I suppose some of us see things differently in the world. I am getting the camera but cannot afford most of the lenses. I will probably be getting the Sony 24-105 and the 77Artisans 11mm only, for everything. Great video! Your recomendation for slowing down 30p at 4K to 24p for "that dreamy look" comes at a price though. For one, 30p 4K is cropped 1,2 on the A7iii, but worse it doesn´t seem to pan smoothly in your very first scene. While the techneque seems to work well in all other shots, for panning I would probably just move the camera slower and actually leave it at 30p (or 24p). Otherwise outstanding information.

    This is so useful and reassuring since I LOVE my A7iii but they just released the IV. Could anyone help me with this question? 4k footage from the A7iii is always too sharp and 'crunchy' even with detail turned right down. How do you give the A7iii footage that softer cinematic look without going all Black Pro mist which looks too soft? I'm using Codyblue's cinematic Cine4 profile but it still looks way sharper than what I see others creating.

    • @MattJackson_YouTube
      @MattJackson_YouTube  3 года назад +1

      I don't know if there's much more we could do about the softness factor considering the sensor MP and the fact that it IS a very sharp image. I've started using the a7sIII as b-cam to all of my FX9 setups because of the softness of character you get from the 12 MP sensor. Using vintage glass with mist filter has always been my answer with the a7III, though.

    • @RobinMacGregor
      @RobinMacGregor 3 года назад +1

      @@MattJackson_RUclips Thanks. Actually I've found the sharpness is from the Mavic Mini 2 that I'm using, and it makes the A7iii look fantastic in comparison! Thanks for your advice. Would love to try the A7siii

      @@MattJackson_RUclips Just finished watching. You are amazing!!! So many things:
      1a) You are the first sony user for whom I'm impressed by the colours. I've never seen
      a7iii footage I liked (stylistically); they tend to be cooler-toned and more modern looking than canon, for lack of better phrasing (think cityscapes > wedding). Your footage is, as you put it, "dreamy". :)
      1b) Your luts are EPIC.
      2) Where did you get those SW title plugins? Love!! Also your flare/light leak transitions.
      3) I appreciate your more creativity-focused breakdown of gear, vs. a mere rundown of specs or personal opinion which mean very little to "creators" (after the nth review).
      4) Thank you for ending w/ content/storytelling trumps technology. I needed to hear it.
      5) Your gear is really professional. How did you afford it all after your career change? (Like was it a big initial investment or slow accumulation over the years?)
      P.S. I'm shocked you only have 1.2k subs!

    • @WSJade
      @WSJade 4 года назад

      @@MattJackson_RUclips Also can you please elaborate what it means to shoot in pro res instead of sony's native codec (is it XAVC-S?)?

    • @MattJackson_YouTube
      @MattJackson_YouTube  4 года назад +1

      @@WSJade Thank you so much! I’ve worked pretty hard to get a “filmic” look with the way that I shoot and light on set and then color in post. It’s a very big complement to hear that, so thank you. The LUTS are also a long endeavor of nearing a filmic look, so I very much appreciate that you like them!
      The SW titles I made in photoshop. Used the original font from the prequel posters and formatted each one accordingly with gradients and such. Glad they ended up looking like a plugin!
      I’m planning a video going into more depth, but suffice to say my former job was an extremely good one, so it’s been a slow build of buying and selling gear up until what we see as my current kit. I’d say it’s been an accumulation of about three years, starting with the original BMPCC.
      I’m all about the quality of those who enjoy my work over the millions of passive viewers, but thank you!
      Regarding ProRes: it’s one of the codec options when recording externally to the Ninja V. It’s a much better codec to edit and I enjoy the latitude of recording to the Ninja V in ProRes at 4:2:2 rather than internally in XAVC at 4:2:0. My Ninja V video hopefully does a decent job of describing the benefits.
      Thank you again so much for watching and for the kind words!

      @@MattJackson_RUclips Thank you for the long answer!
      I've browsed some more footage since and still have yet to come across Sony footage that comes close to yours. Can you reveal more of what colour profiles or modes or techniques you use while shooting (beyond what you've mentioned already, and your obvious skills)? I've heard some settings can be altered to mimic Canon's warmer tones, but most of what I've seen of Sony (both ungraded and graded) are cold or neutral looks, and I'm really really torn as I'm eyeing Canon's R series vs. Sony's A series. Lastly, I know you're not a tutorial channel but would you perhaps be willing to share how you colour grade sometime? I would be most interested to watch!
      Thanks again and happy new year!!!

    Great video! I've bought mine a few months back. It's my first full frame camera and I love it so far. But one thing you've mentioned about recording with the Atomos does not really make sense to me: The ability of recording in ProRes. Of course you're XAVC coded file is saved into the ProRes "container" but still it's just XAVC saved into the ProRes codec, right? I think it won't improve the amount of data in your file or makes it less compressed. Correct me if I'm wrong! But nevertheless, a great camera! But if money would not count, I would go with the A7s III. What a beast of a camera! Keep up the great videos man! :)

    • @MattJackson_YouTube
      @MattJackson_YouTube  4 года назад +1

      Thank you so much for the kind words. From what I understand (and it's limited - haha), it's recording true ProRes via HDMI in 8-bit 4:2:2. It's less compressed than recording internally because you're not recording it internally at all (unless you record simultaneously), but I can say that from experience the files are better to edit and color grade, suggesting that it's true ProRes. That said, I'm always open to being wrong.
