    Lots of questions about the lack of a/c in France and I’ll assume it’s true in most of the continent as well as around the world. Even in certain parts of America people don’t have a/c and have a very hard time during heatwaves. I live in the desert SW of America and have a/c but growing up we had what’s known as a “swamp cooler” which work horribly when it’s humid. I was a teenager before we even had a/c in our car. I believe some of the current climate crisis is cyclical but what isn’t can and should be addressed by nations in trying to reduce carbon emissions.

    00:08:45 - You were looking at a 12€ set of napkins on the table and missed that it was a marble-top/cast base table like April said she wanted, or did you find one already? (Personally, design-wise, I think an enamel-top table would work better in your stone house kitchen and the bistro table can go outside or in the new conservatory 😉) Apologies for all the questions (and thanks for answering them) but suppose you found a large, heavy table or the armoire you want (wanted, past tense?) for the kitchen. You clearly couldn't get it in your little rental car, so is delivery service common (for a fee, obviously, but is there a "standard"?) or would you need a friend/neighbor with a truck?

    Bonjour. I'm still making my way through your older videos, but I'm curious as to your thoughts on this video (ruclips.net/video/-pkaWUVneXQ/видео.html) - particularly the comments about NOT buying a stone house in a remote village.

    • @FrenchStoneHouseLife
      @FrenchStoneHouseLife 9 дней назад

      I guess it depends on your definition of "remote". We are walking distance (~2 KM) to two restaurants and a small corner market. We are in a small hamlet with neighbors who are really kind. Most of our neighbors only speak french (of course) but we make do, as it forces us to speak french also. Major medical facilities for us are about 20 mins. away in Limoges. And veterinarian facilities are about 15 min. away. We do have to rent a car every time we are here. But we kind of figured that into our budget as well. We are about 1.5 hours from Poitiers which has TVG (highspeed rail) and the agency that we rent our cars from is right across the street. I'd say the major difference and hardest thing about living in the french countryside is convenience. Where we live in California, everything is convenient. Amazon drops just about anything we buy on our doorstep in a few days. We can go to just about any restaurant or grocery store in our town at anytime of the day or evening. And if they are not open, there are three others that are open. We own our cars and grew up in the US and know how to get things done. April and I have had this discussion many times. We're not sure one or the other is better, just different. For us, it is all part of the adventure. Learning to live differently. When we get to france it is difficult to slow down. When we get back to the US it is difficult to speed back up. Both are culture shocks. Hope this helps, Michael

      @@FrenchStoneHouseLife That individual was one of the "gateway drugs" that got me thinking a move to France was actually possible, but the more I learn from other sources (like yourselves) the more I find myself gravitating away from her advice or at least utilizing her services. [The pricetag that comes with those services is another reason. Yikes! Not for me.] I figured that you'd agree that a number of her arguments are based on either false assumptions or on relative/contextual differences of opinion. Take travel, for example - she says a stone cottage in the middle of nowhere has limited access to travel. So that's all relative. Gare du Nord & access to the rest of Europe isn't 1 metro stop away, but that doesn't mean you haven't been able to travel (throughout the region and nearly to Switzerland, as I saw in one of your videos).

    How often does the grass need to be mowed? Also, I believe you should cull the first 2-3 years worth of fruit from your figs & trees. That will encourage them to put more energy into growth rather than fruit production. Later, you'll have more fruit from more robust trees.

      Yes we are renting cars. We get a friends and family discount with our brother so it's hard to compare. :) I know someone that uses Europecar for monthly rentals. And there are a few others that also do longer term rentals for less.

    Hi Michael, I'm working my way through your old videos and have some practical questions about the electric service: 1) Are there initial/cancellation fees? Is there a monthly minimum charge? In short, for a 'lock & leave' like yours, would it be practical or economical to cancel the service at the end of the summer and start a new contract when you return in the spring? 2) Same questions for water & sewage services, assuming it's coming from the commune and not a personal well/septic. 3) Same questions for broadband internet service (assuming you have it) 4) Could any of these services be paid via Wise (aka TransferWise) instead of a French bank account? Merci

      Regarding the electrical service. We are with EDF and they do an fixed cost bill and then "true-up" and the end of the year. Our current fixed cost bill is 65 Euros a month. This was estimated based on our appliances and how long and when were were going to be in france. I think there was a initial fee to start service but I don't recall it being too expensive. Regarding Water service. My recent bill was 84 Euros for the year. We have a septic so no billing for that... Our internet service is fiber and cost 27 Euros per month. We also have a french mobile phone and it's 33 euros per month. Both with Orange. I imagine they could all be paid with Wise. We use Wise also. Mostly to just convert dollars to euros though. But, we also have a french bank account, Credit Agricole. It makes paying french stuff like our local taxes easier. Although they do charge us 11 euros per month for the french account, they are super helpful. Hope that helps... :)

    We live in Frankfurt, Germany and recently returned from Maine.. We were shocked by the extremely expensive American grocery prices. Many items were double or even triple what we usually pay in Frankfurt! No wander the Americans are on the verge of revolution.

      Not just that, we were surprised by all sorts of other costs also. Internet/cell phone plans are a fraction of the cost in the US. I guess that's all part of the discovery and adventure of living in europe... :)
