Love this video. FYI, Tangent just released four different of those bay window RI cabooses with working interior light and top red and green lights that you turn on and off with a magentic wand through the roof. Has a keep alive and the lights stay on for about 25 seconds after power is cut. I bought one of the white repaint Route Rocks from 1979 down at the St.Louis RPM meet and was playing with it this evening. Details are off the charts. Metal screen over the door windows, open grate steps. They have red and yellow ones too. Also UP repaints. They just dropped this weekend 7/20/24. I in no way am associated with them, just thought you'd be interested.
Thank you for watching the video and I appreciate your comments about the new Tangent cabooses. Mike
Where is this railroad located?
I’m located in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
I worked as a relief tower operator in Des Moines on the Rock Island while I was.in highschool. Retired from the CP Railroad in 2017.
Thanks so much for capturing the spirit of the Rock Island! SAY NO TO BLUE!!
Thank you for watching the video and for your comments. I, too, am not a fan of the blue. Mike
Fantastic intro video! * subscribed *
Thank you for subscribing ….. I appreciate your comments and appreciate you taking the time to watch the video. Mike
Lots of great loads. Thanks for creating the video
What’s the toggle switch at South Buckeye…evening lights on the display?
The toggle switch operates the turnout to the Buckeye siding. Thank you for watching the video. Mike
Very impressively long opening consist! Nice!😊
Very good information thank you
very nice
Great layout.
Beautiful Rock Island Layout ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I thought the Union Pacific And Rock Island tried to Merge in the 1960s Amazing 👏 ❤
RI was too heavily in debt at the time.
Stunning layout, really enjoyed your tour very much! What I found interesting, was the two rather large yards directly on top of each other. I recently read a piece by Lance Mindheim where he took a look at two deck layouts and he described exactly that situation as something that you never should do ☺. He wrote the operating crews would just not have enough space to work in a place like that. Guess Lance is not always right 😉 Keep up the great work!
Actually, Lance Mindheim has a very good point as the yards on top of each other can create operational interference. We’ve been able to work around that issue during operating sessions to minimize space conflicts. Thank you for your comments! Mike
Right up there with Neil Schofields CP in Vermont layout. You wonder what wouldve happened if the merger hadnt happened. Such smaller roads aways seem to give better service.
Thank you for watching the video and I appreciate your comments. Mike
Great action and cool video 👍
Thank you! Mike
Great tutorial for Ops on your layout I greatly enjoy it. Does it happen you have more crew than trains? If so what do you do? Does it happen that trains "terminate" faster then expected as well? Thanks again for the great video
So far, we haven't had more crews than trains; however, if that were to happen we would be able to add trains to the operation a little later to allow everyone to operate ...... OR ..... we would form 3 man crews to allow more junior attendees to gain experience and familiarization with the layout. Trains don't terminate faster than expected as they all have some work to do along the way and they have meets with other trains which eats up some amount of time. Thank you for your comments and questions. Mike
@@rimodeler7963 Thank you very much Mike. I appreciate your answer. Greats stuff.
Pretty interesting. Thanks for sharing. Dave
Thank you, Dave! Mike

beautiful!!!!
Thank you very much! Mike
@@rimodeler7963 you're very welcome. The Rock is one of my favorite because I also was born in illinois
So well done.Great midwestern atmosphere, it’s like a time machine 😎🚂🇺🇸
Thanks very much for your kind comments! Mike
Another great video Mike and a nice tutorial on how operations occur on your railroad. Have a great summer and we’ll see you next time!
Thank you, John. I look forward to seeing you at the next operating session. Enjoy your summer! Mike
Thank you for sharing. Hey Mike, I like the control drawer for the turntable @ 11:25, what a great idea.👍
Greetings, Gary, and thanks for noticing the turntable control device on the slide out ..... you're the first to comment on that. I appreciate you checking out the video! Mike
The dispatcher’s board is reminiscent of the board used at the Armourdale Yard Relay Office to keep track of trains on the line to St. Louis
I appreciate your comments on the dispatcher's board and thanks for watching the video. Mike
Great video Mike!!! I was looking at the MR magazine again with your layout and saw you retired from BNSF and lived in Texas, did you ever do any work out of Temple TX, I pass over that yard on I35 on my way down to Laredo every so often, it looks huge!!!
Thanks for your comments. I did not do any work out of Temple, but did pass through a few times on hy-rail and geometry car inspection trips. I also walked a few yard tracks with the Roadmaster several years ago. I appreciate you watching the video! Mike
Great info on operation. Fun to watch your railroad in action. Thanks.
Thanks so much for watching the video. Mike
hmmm, at 10:15 shouldn't that signal at the end of the platform need to have been red?
No, that is a train order board and not a wayside signal which governs the movement of trains. A train order board remains green unless there are orders to be delivered to a train. Thank you for watching the video. Mike
@@rimodeler7963 oh I see, thanks for the info.. I don't think we use those in Australia. at least I never have known about them.
Great video Mike. OS meaning "On Sheet" is interesting and appropriate. Especially before CTC when Station Agents, train crews, and operators had to report their location to the dispatcher. The term "On Station" became common nomenclature once CTC became widely used because it would provide electronic/visual feedback to the dispatcher. That's how dispatchers and I used the term on the MoPac & UP. But again, railroads are conglomerations and the nomenclature terms are like a soup of intersecting terms and meanings stirred together in a large caldron and used differently in different areas. That's why your use of the term is so fun and it is the right term. One of the interesting train reporting methods I remember using is "Train Registers" that were located in dispatcher phone boxes at junctions in Dark Territory and at junctions that went from Dark Territory to signaled territory. Every train would have to stop and fill out the Train Register and reference the Train Register for trains told to wait for. Can you imagine having an operating session where you used "Train Orders" with a person designated as an operator/agent at every station? The train crews would run deaf with no communication with a central dispatcher, but rather received main track authority and operating instructions from the operator at each station? Thank you Kevin Dawson
Hi Kevin - You are correct that a lot of railroad nomenclature tends to take on a variety of different interpretations and uses. I remember Train Registers as we had one on the north end of the Denver Terminal at Clear Creek when I was Roadmaster there in the early 1980's. A tragic event occurred with that register in August 1985 that resulted in a horrific head-on collision. As a result, train registers were then done away with in favor of Track Warrant Control (TWC) territory which was a really good move. Thanks so much for your great comments and for watching the video. Mike
Excellent, if short overviewof whatloooksto be a fun Ops session on what isone of my favourite layouts to watch...! Thanks for posting and cheers from Melbourne, Australia.

Very interesting op session.
Terrific looking layout. Very impressive.
I am fortunate enough to live local and was invited back to another one of Mike's operating session. Like the first time, this one was just a ton of fun. These guys are all the best and more than patient with a rookie like me. Also, it doesn't hurt that the track was perfectly laid and is meticulously maintained.
Glad to have you as part of the operating team, Loren. Thank you for the nice comments! Mike
Dispatching is fun Good idea with the radio. Looks like a great Ops. Well done
Beautiful layout. The total package. The room and layout is very well lit. Scenery is spot on and well done. All weathering is also well done especially the locomotives. Nice crew size not too many folks. So nicely done.
Thank you very much ...... I appreciate it! Mike
Wow, reliable turnouts! Imagine THAT!
