    When playing my first wizard I picked summon undead at lv 5 so our small group could have more bodies on the field (pun intended). I never got to use it, 300 gp gilded skull didn’t come up in a low wealth campaign with law abiding pcs, and the campaign ended at lv 8.

    These rules are so bad, we ignore them when fighting wizards and the strongest member of our party grapples the wizard then shoves his fist down his throat to block verbal components. Since neither grappling nor restrained stop casters by default that’s our strategy, and the dm usually allows us to make a contested check a-la grappling rules for it. True they can cast spells without verbal components but there’s only like 6 of those?

    Mayhaps the fiend makes the save against banishment again? If they are concentrating on banishing the fiend and it wriggles back through the hole it seems like they are still pushing against it so roll the charisma save for the fiend again. You could also rule it like counterspell where the higher level spell has priority, so 7th level plane shift cancels 4th level banishment. Or then again, just plane shift after the fight and not have the problem.

    In my game I doubled the dice of any spell that restores hp, and so far it’s worked out well. I also track negative hp if a pc goes down so they don’t try to fight on 1 hp, because it’ll be very hard to get them back up when they hit -20.

    I’ve always believed that Bladesingers can use their extra attack cantrip with haste if and only if that cantrip qualifies as a weapon attack. Booming Blade and GFB both specify you make an attack with a weapon, ergo they are weapon attacks. Any spell or ability which has a condition “be hit with a weapon attack” would be activated by those cantrips. That means they are weapon attacks, and in the case of the BS, being taken with the attack action, so there’s no reason for haste to preclude them.

    No that’s stupid. If you already have magic you don’t need the feat. The feat lets you make a martial into a healer while at the same time limiting the usefulness of the healers kit so if you want to play this way then not everyone who gets a kit can steal your thing.

    Absolutely love the example builds! If you continue this series, would it be too much to ask for for an example build for each different prime stat? Or would highlight the flexibility of the system. Rogue for example: The Ruffian (MIG), The Thief (AGI), The Mastermind (INT), and the Con Artist (CHA)

    I'ma steelman. The campaign isn't a real world. It's a procedurally and statistically generated simulacrum. So if i can glitch the game's physics engine, the effects aughta occur.

    Why is this being discussed if there are no rules for momentum? It doesn't matter if a round is only 6 seconds if the object literally isn't gaining any momentum in that 6 seconds. This sounds like a reddit joke, not an exploit. Hell even if were being silly and going "ohhh, but if it happened IRL it would be like this!" Why are we applying realism to the situation when it would create a railgun and conveniently ignoring realism when the stave would eventually just slip from your hands, if it actually got fast enough to do any real damage it would tear the skin off your fingers, maybe dislocate an arm in the middle of a chain and fly into someone's back. You know, I think it would be interesting to allow it but make them apply realism to actually performing this insane feat, each pesant that passes the stave makes a strength save and dex check of increasing difficulty at every other point in the chain. There is no damage cap and you can nuke a red dragon if you get far enough but if any point of the chain fails there is a catastrophic failure of increasing severity for each point they succeded so far.

      Oh yeah, it is 100% a case of picking and choosing when to apply the rules vs realism. Introducing extra layers of realism shuts it down, and so does refusing to go outside the rules.

    there needs to be better integration of various conditions (blindness, deafness, etc) with healing vs. restoration style spells. It never feels worth it to cast "Lesser Restoration" and if you do its always out of combat. Usually I'd give a player a medicine check with a DC = 10+CR of the creature to heal against one of its effects by using a healing spell. Additionally, using slow healing long rests, where hit die are the only thing that heal, not reset to max on a long rest, makes healing spells more worth it in multi-day campaigns.

    My DM has confirmed that he will allow us to use the peasant railgun (which is actually how I learned about it), and that got me thinking on how to streamline that. Then I realized that I could put a long line of homunculi (each one just being a hand) into a bag of holding, turning this into a handheld thing. I'm not planning on making this (or at least, not yet), but I don't think I've ever felt such disgust and horror at my own ideas for how to do busted stuff like this. Anyway, good luck to any necromancers, artificers, druids or whatever reading this who decide to use this idea. I hope some god will forgive you.

    Smite with an improvised weapon [GLOVE], or if you want to be spicy challenge someone to a duel by smiting them with your [GAUNTLET]. 100% RAW don’t look it up your dm is legally obligated to believe you. There is only 1 situation where I don’t think unarmed smites work, and that’s a prison break. You great sword paladin is trying to break out of prison and suddenly they want to smite with their fists so they aren’t lame that smacks of desperation. In all other circumstances you are arbitrarily lowing your damage to smite with a 1+str weapon. And if you are deliberately building that way it seems like it should apply even more, if you are taking monk levels to smite and stun you should be able to. A fix for the above could be that the paladin need to have a holy symbol on them to smite, a talisman of uncommon holiness to perform the unarmed smite. If they are ever separated from that the smite is turned off.

    fade to black feels the same either way any party that wants to, will just do a long rest "but the story will ma-" thats dm choice, not party choice. you have to generate scenarios to make that matter. i think in a average game where you give a fairly average number of long rests, the coffee lock is actually weaker then other forms of magic user

    I just put a limit on short rests in my games. At least two hours in between each short rest. It forces players to not just fully recharge after every 30 second combat. As a dm i got so tired of that pacing.

    I'd say a lot of the boils down to how much the DM trusts their player. As long as the coffee lock isn't being a murder hobo, I wouldn't really see this as being a huge problem. As long as they are still able to have fun interactions with the world and other players, It wouldn't necessarily be used enough to break the game. As long as everyone's enjoying themselves at the table that's really all that matters. And as long as the scenes don't sound too ridiculous when you actually say them out loud. I think that's an important component of the game that some people miss, and that's how things get out of hand. DMs could very easily make a "common sense" ruling because of this; The person, especially if they have a habit of doing this--would be required to explain the scene that they intend to incorporate. If it sounds relatively reasonable, like a scene from a movie, or video game, or something that requires a fair amount of strategy to pull off, Then it passes. If it sounds completely absurd, Like making your character able to go at mach speed that can completely outrun any enemy, Then it fails. I feel like that would work as safety rails for the game without making players feel like they're being completely denied any opportunities, And can help to curb rule exploitation.

    Haste let's you make one attack only with the attack action. Using a cantrip is doing something other than taking the attack action and making one weapon attack. You can cantrip, attack, hasted attack. You cast cast two cantrips in a turn unless you quicken or action surge. Sorry but bladesingers don't deserve this interaction.

    Hi there Rules and Rulings. Thank You so much for your Excellent Videos on Dungeons and Dragons. I am just starting out in Dungeons & Dragons 5e, and I am playing a High Elf Wizard. What is the difference between a known spell and a prepared spell? I would like to know exactly how many cantrips, first level spells, and second level spells does a second level wizard have as known spells. I think that it is 3 cantrips, 6 first level spells, and 2 second level spells. Then with each additional level the amount of spells increases by 2. How many prepared spells does a second level wizard have available to her--is it 2 + spellcasting ability modifier? Can I at any time swap known spells on the Wizard full list of spells if I feel a spell is not a good spell. Please respond with your answer, and Thank You.

      Very close. A Wizard starts with 6 1st-level spells. They don't gain any 2nd-level spells until they are a third level Wizard. It's a frustrating part of the way D&D presents its material, with character level and spell level not lining up. At second level you pick another two spells, these would both still be 1st-level. You swap out your prepared spells during a Long Rest, when you pick a number equal to your wizard level plus your Intelligence modifier. At first level this will usually be 4 of your 6 chosen spells, your cantrips are separate and always prepared. Hope that helps, if not there are tons of videos out there to learn more.

    It sounds OP when people describe it but I’ve noticed little difference in game because they can still only cast 1 spell per turn unless they use their limited sorcery pool to quicken a spell.

    If you are wondering if it fits into the rules: It doesn't. You need to straight up ignore the spellsplot table which is telling you your max number of slots. If your DM remotely looks into the direction of the first page about the sorcerer, it falls apart. This is the "Oh i can attack 25 times actually on level 2" Fighter but for magic. Just lie.

      Light 'er up. Most of the banderhobb's advantages in a combat situation come from or enhanced by darkness. A well lit area stops them from teleporting and makes them less likely to get advantage on their attacks by hiding.

      Id allow it them to try. But it's not gonna be easy and there will be consequences. (Allot of peasants missing arms with hell to pay and the final peasant still has to beat the AC 😈)

    I have yet to try it but I plan to try a system where the lowest a creature's int the more likely it is to just attack the closest thing. Like an ooze will just seek food. As int goes up it'll start to identify group size and potential threat

    I would say that the warlock spells do no get replaced by a short rest as long as you still have them. Even if you store them as sorcery points, they are still there, so they do not replinish, until you use them.

    Does the casting entity itself have to speak the verbal component? Or could a Spellcaster for example have a different person speak the incantation?

    I introduced an hourglass to my party that allowed them to spend a large amount of time in a short amount of time for a puzzle solving. My sorcerer found a genie lamp and said, “I want to take a level of genie warlock and go spend 1 year in that hourglass.” Suddenly 5th level Counterspell was a cantrip. I had a Lich teleport to them, cast PWK, and made him sleep lol. Bad DMing I won’t lie. But it was fun. I wanted to let him feel unstoppable for a couple sessions. Then I needed to rebalance.

    I likee to think this is fully a thing in universe that there is a specific deity that seeks to make pacts with sorcerers and that there is a condition called mana burn that reduces a charecters max hit points in relation to the amount/level of excess spell slots. Throw in a dungeon thats just a couple cultists doing exactly this and they are throwing out high level fire balls and so on

    Coffeelock was built for Gritty Realism. This system, as it extends Short Rest timings to a full 8 hours, and Long Rests to a week, means this becomes less "infinite Spell Slots" and more "Enough spell slots to flex spell slots for a class that would otherwise be unavailable in the setting." I.E. proper Wizards, for instance. It more or less ensures they'll suffer a decrease in potential power in exchange for maintaining daily potential utility.
