  • Combining an effect that benefits you when you cast a levelled spell with an effect that lets you cast a levelled spell indefinitely seems like good synergy. But does it cross the line from synergy into cheese territory?

Tried out some new Tinker's Tools on the audio for this one, hopefully the sound level isn't as throttled by RUclips as previous videos.

I don't see an issue with that at all. Using an ability score improvement for a feat such as eldritch adept means pushing a higher spell attack modifier and spell save DC further back in the character's progression, which is the bread and butter of any wizard. Playing a variant human or taking the Custom Lineage route means they will lack darkvision, which in turn affects how easy the character can be targeted for the rest of the game.

Svirfneblin Magic feat lets you cast nondetection at will. Even better

And all it cost you was a feat and... being a deep gnome. :D

Going from 8 to 45 makes it seem relatively "balanced" to me... it's useful when you get it and provides diminishing degrees of benefit as levels climb (based on my limited observations), due to damage values gradually outpacing health gained by both the character and the ward... I'd allow it, you're giving up other things for it, anyhow.
Also! The audio's good! I actually had the volume up to 16 when I started the video, but it was still comfortably audible at 10, my normal volume. Thanks!

    Great video!
I think it's as balanced as many other multiclass combination. Eldritch Adept may make it unbalanced in a game where feats are allowed but multiclassing is not, but this tends to be a minority of games.
Arcane Ward can also be refilled by casting alarm as a ritual. The only difference between this and armour of shadows is how long the process takes. Feasibly a wizard might be able to refill their ward during a short rest (depending on how much damage it took), while Armor of Shadows is guaranteed to refill it at the expense of that opportunity cost.

I think the opportunity cost is the key thing with this one.

@@RulesandRulings a good comparison might be the tough feat. That would give a character 2*their level in extra hit points while arcane ward has roughly the same number of hp. But tough effectively stacks with the ward while armour of shadows lets you refill it for free. One is better for resource management, the other is better for survivability 🙂

There is a better combo for this. Take a deep gnome and grab their racial feat. They get at will castings of nondetection.

If deep gnomes are available to you and make sense, this is a great option.

If you go warlock 2, and wizard for the rest of your levels, I’d say you’ve earned immortality to hit point damage. The thing I have a problem with is the Eldritch adept feat. Non-warlocks shouldn’t be allowed to get a feat that brings the exclusive class features of a warlock without any of the interesting Roleplay hooks that come with having a patron.

    • @stammesbruder

A character that has the warlock class does not necessarily have a patron, so why is this an issue? Can't magical secrets lead to powerful effects in a mage? Couldn't the mere exposure to a higher, or eldritch being be enough to leave a trace of their otherworldly power within the character? It might as well have been a gift, for aiding in a service without being contractually obligated to do so. Personally, I think warlock is the perfect class to play a hag - no patron required. You could always still do a one-time sidequest for the character to get that feat, if you really "need" there to be some sort of patron figure.

@@stammesbruder If you want to reflavor the entire class and it’s roleplay hooks to fit a particular Niche, go ahead. But that’s simply not how I play or DM warlocks. Reflavoring things always comes at a cost.

If you remove the patron/Warlock relationship, the class you’re playing with only is vaguely related to what I think of as warlocks.

You can flavor it as a gift though. Maybe you did a Fiend a favor. Maybe you impressed a Fey when it was in a giving mood. Maybe a Celestial supports your cause and decided to help you along the way.
Or you can flavor it as you, a master of the arcane, having a breakthrough after years of experimentation. The roleplay of it is entirely up to the player and dm. Especially since Patrons rarely have any actual impact.
