  • One of the main elements that go into the casting of spells in 5th edition. Verbal components are the talky, shouty bit of spell casting.

I love using Subtle spell, I like to imagine that the fantasy is that the will of the caster has to be Said very Clearly, so no whispering, only some can temper the Weave in the right way to hide their intentions, great Video!

It makes those moments when sorcerers and psions change reality with a thought all the more powerful if everyone else can't even try it.

@@RulesandRulings totally! Especially, in those rare moments where your character is restrained in ropes or muted somehow, but you can still cast sith subtle spell, making the other casters a little jealous lol, I love using Subtle Spell

i do wish that d&d did more with the flavorings of certain classes' spellcasting styles

Mind control spells are a particularly interesting case, since what counts as a verbal component will influence how obvious it is that a spell is being cast and thus how easy it is to apply the spell in social settings. Can you slip Suggestion into a conversation, or will people immediately pick up on it? The fact that sound, pitch and resonance are what matters suggest to me that normal words might be spoken as a verbal component, but in a distorted manner, although it depends on how specific these sounds need to be. Giving NPCs an insight check with advantage against such an overt casting attempt might be an interesting way to turn this into a high risk high reward situation: you can try to cast your spell on the king in front of his court... but you are at a great risk of being caught.

Right. Attempts at subtle casting without the ability to completely ignore components should be awkward and have potentially drawbacks. The mental image of someone talking in strangely musical and unnaturally timed words to cast a spell is a cool one.

That is a good point you made near the end about subtle spell proving command spell’s verbal component isn’t the command. I haven’t really heard that take much of using a specific rule to help define an unspecified one. Bravo

Unfortunately, the way D&D focuses on using "natural language" we sometimes ONLY have the specific cases to let us know what the general rules is supposed to be. XD

I enforce verbal components. If a player tries to cast a spell without being heard and they aren't near an observer. I roll a perception for the observer with a low DC (increased with distance). A standard I use is DC 10 if they are in the same area, but not in conversational distance.

That's a great way to rule the possibility of being detected with verbal components. I like that it's down to the other creature rather than a roll from the player to be quiet. :)

Yeah thats a good way to do it. Hate when a dm will say that npc on the other side of the planet saw you cast it because you had to speak.

I believe all verbal components must be spoken at conversation volume or louder. Otherwise, what is the point of the component other than to give someone a queue for counterspell?

Great now do Sematic, Material and Ritual parts of spells to finally help me make sense of all the 500+ spells in D&D 5E.

Does the casting entity itself have to speak the verbal component? Or could a Spellcaster for example have a different person speak the incantation?

I like the idea on the front of bard being connected to verbal components in a stronger way. BUT I think bards are already too musician focused. Why cant I be a bard who paints, mimes, dances, sculpts, Origami, Fashion. I'm not saying Bards should be able to skip it but I think Bards should be encouraged to go beyond just singing and playing an instrument. Good stuff though

I made a point of including dancing as an example for this reason. Definitely agree that more options are better.
