    Can we just appreciate that not only did Shadowheart's voice actress record all these spells and variations, but that every other origin character and hireling did too in case you switched their class to use any spell? (This doesn't even include enemy VAs)

    • @Ed.07
      @Ed.07 5 месяцев назад +31

      The pronunciation is not that bad, but being selective with a specific letter being pronounced according to the Classical Pronunciation while completely ignoring all of the other ones is weird. The "V"s, for example, were pronounced according to the Ecclesiastical Pronunciation (a voiced labiodental fricative) instead of the correct pronunciation according to the Classical Pronunciation (which would be a voiced labial-velar approximant). Considering the context of the game, they were probably aiming for the Classical Pronunciation, there are a lot of corrections to be made -- but in reality, it's totally fine and understandable that the voice actors didn't get an immaculate pronunciation of Latin, but it is weird to see people saying how they are glad the VAs pronounced "c"s as a voiceless velar plosive rather than a voiceless palato-alveolar affricate.

    they did a colossal job in this game, and the idea of following the tradition of BG1 and 2 of using Latin for spells is the icing on the cake. I can only imagine the agony of voice actors having to read and shout phrases in Latin when their native language is English. and I tell you that it is not easy or immediate even for us Italians, and pronunciation errors are easily forgivable. I'm happy to read in the comments how much the sound of Latin is appreciated and I tell you that if pronounced correctly it's even better❤

    Thinking about all those actors recording all these lines, the animations that accompany each spell (both the character movements and the look of the spell itself) AND the super cool sound effects that each spell makes….all this shows such an incredible attention to detail, that really pays off. It creates so many moments during combat that feel so epic and satisfying.
    All the actors did such a great job in their performances, these lines are just one of the many ways in which their talent shines! Shadowheart and Wyll’s actors are particularly memorable for me with their readings of these spells!!

    As someone from Latinoamerica with spanish as their first language, this is all a bit funny to me. For example the spell Lesser Restoration in latin is "Te Absolvo" and in spanish that would be "te absolvo" exactly the same. Also works with a bunch of other spells, "te curo" is also the exact same words and spelling as in spanish. Imagine getting caught off guard on your first playthrough when i was like ARE THEY SPEAKING SPANISH? later to realize it was latin. But hearing Astarion telling me he absolves me every morning curing my bloodlessness, i enjoy.

    Interesting how in the Unused section they have a bunch of chants from the first two games, like the Vita Mortis Careo that gets burned into your brain by playing those games.
    Also it seems that some in the unused section actually fit existing spells (e.g. shatter and circle of death specifically)

    • @Mr.Otter1
      @Mr.Otter1  Год назад +6

      Oh, nice! I didn't know those were from the first two games. Yeah, I'm guessing they had them planned for existing spells and just ended up using something else. Also for some spells, not a lot but a few, there are A LOT of different takes. Like in game you hear 3 variations but in the files you have 10 or 11 for some all with different accents and intonations. So I guess they are just leftovers. I do have like 3 or 4 more chants from the unused section that I did not include cause they were extremely short with 1 word and kinda hard to translate.

    @N1ghthavvk Год назад +18

    "Cave circulum" / "Avoid the circle" was probably meant for the spell "Magic circle" which didn't make it ingame.
    From the wiki:
    3rd-level abjuration
    Casting Time: 1 minute
    Range: 10 feet
    Components: V, S, M (holy water or powdered silver and iron worth at least 100 gp, which the spell consumes)
    Duration: 1 hour
    You create a 10-foot-radius, 20-foot-tall cylinder of magical energy centered on a point on the ground that you can see within range. Glowing runes appear wherever the cylinder intersects with the floor or other surface.
    Choose one or more of the following types of creatures: celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, or undead. The circle affects a creature of the chosen type in the following ways:
    The creature can’t willingly enter the cylinder by nonmagical means. If the creature tries to use teleportation or interplanar travel to do so, it must first succeed on a Charisma saving throw.
    The creature has disadvantage on attack rolls against targets within the cylinder.
    Targets within the cylinder can’t be charmed, frightened, or possessed by the creature.
    When you cast this spell, you can elect to cause its magic to operate in the reverse direction, preventing a creature of the specified type from leaving the cylinder and protecting targets outside it.
    At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the duration increases by 1 hour for each slot level above 3rd.
    Spell Lists. Cleric, Paladin, Warlock, Wizard

    8:11 Actually, the line should be a bit different, since "facere" has a special property. In its imperative form, it is one of few words to be contracted to just its root, which is..."fac". This is also why I think that they changed it lol.
    (This also applies to "dicere" turning it into..."dic". In German schools, it is common to teach these irregular words as the mnemonic "Dic, duc, fac, fer", which is just peak funny to me.
