    There's plenty of plausible restrained situations where your legs and/or torso are held by something, but your arms are still free. That's probably why Restrained doesn't by default prevent somatic components.

    i had a big discussion with my dm at the start of my campaign about somatic components since im playing a pally/sorc and want to be wielding a sword and shield. first of all, we agreed that if you can perform somatic components with a focus for spells with material components, you can perform somatic components with a focus for those without as well. that just makes more sense. the other thing was that yeah, the holy symbol on my shield works as a focus for pally spells, but since both hands are full i cant cast a lotta sorc spells! and yeah, i could drop a weapon as a free action, cast a spell, then use my object interaction to pick my weapon back up, but not only is that lame as heck but it also doesnt allow me to cast shield! our fix for that was great though: an imbued wood focus *as* my longsword. its also a lovely bit of flavor having an enchanted wooden sword as a paladin of the goddess of nature!

      Sounds like you had a great discussion and came to a cool middle ground. Totally agree that the drop-cast-grab loophole is super weird.

    I think it makes sense a restrained creature is not too dissimilar to one with manacles on

    If you have a regular caster holding a torch and focus, then by this reasoning, they not allowed to cast their somatic-only spells even if they do get the Warcaster feat, since neither of those things are weapons. Until two days ago, I never questioned being able to cast somatic spells with a focus, and everything made more sense. From now on, if anyone is considering getting a focus, I'm going to scream at them to only ever get a component pouch.

      I'm deeply sorry for introducing you to the dreaded thing that is hand-math.

    Restrained, "...Attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and the creature's attack rolls have disadvantage...", I feel like if you can attack, you can still cast a spell. If you can half hazardly attack within your reach, you can half hazardly reach into a component pouch or at very least be holding a focus.

      Definitely a parallel there. Unfortunately there's not a good equivalent to disadvantage we could apply to spells. Advantage on saving throws is close.

      @@RulesandRulings I agree with you there. For the most part Restrained really only feels like a hands free Grapple as written. Really depends on how you're restrained. Are vines coming from the ground restraining your movement, is a straight jacket restraining the movement of your arms, or what about mouth/eyes (Blinded)/ears(Deafened) being covered as a form of restraint. I think there should be a way of specifying, but homebrew is really all there is at this point.

      @@RulesandRulings Spell attacks like Firebolt would still be at disadvantage. Still doesn't keep you from casting a Fireball though.. lol

    Do you have a video on casting multiple leveled spells in one turn using action surge?
    Since the rules specify that you can't cast another leveled spell if you cast a spell with your BONUS ACTION.
    If not could be a good vid topic

    • @TrixyTrixter
      @TrixyTrixter Год назад

      Whats really to discuss there? If your not casting a bonus action spell you can cast unlimited spells as long as you have the actions.

    • @Meacci133
      @Meacci133 Год назад

      @@TrixyTrixter i mean i agree, but i have a friend who rules it differently as it doesn't really make sense to remove leveled spell casting, if you use one as a bonus action

    These rules are so bad, we ignore them when fighting wizards and the strongest member of our party grapples the wizard then shoves his fist down his throat to block verbal components. Since neither grappling nor restrained stop casters by default that’s our strategy, and the dm usually allows us to make a contested check a-la grappling rules for it. True they can cast spells without verbal components but there’s only like 6 of those?

    Yeah a druid and wizard are doomed if their hands are tied up, but a sorcerer can cast without making hand signs, and warlock well they can cast spells at will. Druids and wizards seem to suck which is why I gave wizards a bigger spell list compared to warlock and sorcerer, and druid has custom spells similar to cleric and bard, making them different.

    • @RulesandRulings
      @RulesandRulings  Год назад +1

      The warlock invocations that let them cast certain spells without components would definitely have a lot more weight if the components were more properly part of the game.
