    My favorite material components is detect thoughts requiring one copper piece. It is a penny for your thoughts

      @@RulesandRulingsHi there. Thank You so much for your Excellent Videos on Dungeons and Dragons. I am just starting out in Dungeons & Dragons 5e, and I am playing a High Elf Wizard. What is the difference between a known spell and a prepared spell? I would like to know exactly how many cantrips, first level spells, and second level spells does a second level wizard have as known spells. I think that it is 3 cantrips, 6 first level spells, and 2 second level spells. Then with each additional level the amount of spells increases by 2. How many prepared spells does a second level wizard have available to her--is it 2 + spellcasting ability modifier? Can I at any time swap known spells on the Wizard full list of spells if I feel a spell is not a good spell. Please respond with your answer, and Thank You.

    I definitely want my players to keep track of whether they have the necessary materials for their spells, and I do so as a player as well. I don't make these materials hard to come by (unless they overly rely on them, such as with diamonds and diamond dust), but playing a caster means playing with power - if you want it that much, you should be expected to also pay attention on your requirements.
    In my next campaign though, I am going to have a much smaller economy, meaning that getting rich is hard, and they won't so easily be able to get a 50gp diamond for chromatic orb, let alone 300gp worth of diamonds for revivify without it being a major economic decision for the party.

      If you get buy in for that kind of campaign, it can really make your players think.

    These videos continue to be excellent. It takes a deep understanding to categorize such a broad topic usefully and talent to make it entertaining. Keep up the good work.

    When playing my first wizard I picked summon undead at lv 5 so our small group could have more bodies on the field (pun intended). I never got to use it, 300 gp gilded skull didn’t come up in a low wealth campaign with law abiding pcs, and the campaign ended at lv 8.

    Scryings material component hits that thematic dead on. But my favorite is Infernal Calling's

      Scrying hits the theme dead on, it almost seems a waste that it includes the more portable options. Material components that can't be moved is untapped potential.

    My last PC (alien drow ranger with virtual spirit of dwarf and literal rifle) used her dancing lights as a part of her praying. I kinda forgot that it required material component, and then decided just to put it aside, as I didn't have any interesting ideas about it. I feel a bit disappointed now, as I understand I could introduce some gloving fungus paste that looks potentially toxic and definitely alien. Her goddess is the goddess of life and artificial light, and (pretty respected) god of death in her world is also god of fungus, so it would work well together. (DM didn't like the campaign and we eventually decided to start a new one, so she died in a lab she tried to rob, if nothing worse happened to her.)

      Glowing fungus would make a great component for light spells. Definitely one to keep in the back pocket for future characters.

    It’s all fun and games until Mr Marbles drops his spell bag and blows up the entire tavern with 10 delayed cast fireballs 😦

      Very close. A Wizard starts with 6 1st-level spells. They don't gain any 2nd-level spells until they are a third level Wizard. It's a frustrating part of the way D&D presents its material, with character level and spell level not lining up. At second level you pick another two spells, these would both still be 1st-level. You swap out your prepared spells during a Long Rest, when you pick a number equal to your wizard level plus your Intelligence modifier. At first level this will usually be 4 of your 6 chosen spells, your cantrips are separate and always prepared. Hope that helps, if not there are tons of videos out there to learn more.

    Consumed Materials are required and cannot be substituted.

    What if spell/cantrip has two components, like Shillelagh (mistletoe, a shamrock leaf)? Does Druidic focus cover both or just one?

    I want to know who it is that is going around getting red dragon scales for component pouches so Wizards and Sorcerers can cast Aganazzar's Scorcher.
    On a similar note with pouches I want to know where the petrified newt eyes or bag of colored sand come from if a player ever decides to multiclass between wizard and warlock and picks up Hex or Color Spray. Maybe a better example would be with Cleric and Wizard since things like rods and staffs that are associated with arcane magic could copy over for warlocks, but cleric would need to do stuff with a holy symbol of some kind so you need that, I don't know, just feels weird to have a wizard multiclass to cleric and be like "let me cast bless real quick" because I mean where the holy water come from? And just saying it is in your component pouch doesn't make sense because wouldn't your pouch start off with things for being a wizard. Then again I suppose just having bat guano in the bag seems weird or suddenly show up at 5th level. I get the appeal of the pouches for multiclassing but still feels weird that some materials just show up when it feels like some materials seem more difficult to come by than others. Again Aganazzar's Scorcher, a level 2 spell, uses a red dragon scale while Fireball, a level 3 spell, uses a bit of sulfur and bat guano. Imagine though if the bat guano and the red dragon scale were swapped, like going into a cave to get some bat droppings seems like a much easier than going to volcano for some sulfur and fighting a young red dragon nearby for it's scale. I can see not wanting to deal with that by just having them wave a wand around or something. On that note of waving your hand around there are only 10 spells in 5e, yes still just 10, that involve material components but not somatic. Both Ag. Scorcher and Darkness are 2nd level Wizard spells with material but while one needs you to use a free hand to wave around a dragon scale or something the other one just needs bat fur and some oil or pitch. I mean when you cast darkness do you even need to reach into a material pouch or grab a wand? Somatic components you need at least one free hand sure but Darkness doesn't use somatic components, it's just verbal and material so couldn't it be said as long as you have a wand you can cast darkness? Imagine taking eldritch adept for devil sight and casting darkness on the tip of an arrow before firing or something. Anyway going back to the dragon scale or sulfur and bat guano I have no idea what you are doing, like are you crushing the sulfur in your hand as flick the ball of bat guano like a booger 150 feet away or something?

      Dragon scales is a great example of a component that's thematic but strains realism a little bit. Its also funny that Aganazzar's needs a red dragon scale... or a glass orb, or a magic stick. :D

    I like material components but I disslike the "material components always show your castig a spell" Simply because of something like detect thought. If subtly cast youd fiddle with a copper coin for a second qhich should not imidiately tell anyone that your casting a spell.

    • @RulesandRulings
      @RulesandRulings  Год назад

      Without some sort of ability, all spells are obviously cast. That's something you can change in your games if you'd prefer, definitely room for games where spells are a subtle and potent thing.

    • @apjapki

      If you Subtle Spell 'detect thoughts' and your DM says it is obviously cast because of the material component, they need to have a long hard look at themselves.
      Why would subtle spell even exist then?

    • @TrixyTrixter
      @TrixyTrixter 3 месяца назад

      @apjapki The problem is that that is how the game rules are written. No matter what a material makes everyone know, a spell is being cast even when nothing about it tells.
      Detect thought is just the most obvious case where there is no reason anyone should be able to tell a spell is cast due to the material being so mundane.
