Comparing the most expensive guitar I've ever owned with the cheapest guitar I've ever owned.
Hey folks,
This is a tone comparison between my Yamaha FG-800J and my 1958 Martin D-28.
The Martin can go for up to 20,000 dollars USD.
This one is a player grade, so it's worth around 10,000.
The yamaha retails for around 300$
To me, this yamaha is absolutely unbelievable for the money.
How do you find they compare?
Let me know what you think in the comments
Cheers

I bought an FG 800 sounded better than my Collings d 1 , unreal when u find a good one I sold the Collings
@shoer5151 wow. I know!!!
I never ever tried the pick up in mine to a foot pedal
If I take a picture of mine could you ask the guitar word if someone can fix mine i don't have a lot of money
Thet one sounds loud
My dad said that if he wins the lottery he will help you out
Every played a Y red-label? I wanted one so badly in my youth. They sound really nice.
@paulhedeen7659 oh yes I've played a few. Those are awesome. I had an LL16ARE that was amazing I miss that guitar.
The Y sounds really good, especially the midrange. The Martin is the better "investment" if someone is worried about a return, of course, but the Y, truth to tell, is good enough for most of us. The M's lower and midrange are clearly richer. I could do the same comparison with an Alvarez (solid rosewood with maple bindings) that I own. I think I paid 450 for it. Thanks.
@paulhedeen7659 Alvarez guitars are awesome. Brother, I couldn't agree more. The FG-800J is my top recommendation for beginners. And the way I see it, it's a guitar they'll keep their whole life.
Nice playing, the J-200 is probably my least favorite acoustic across the board. I much prefer the sound of a standard dred.
@@Revansstuntdouble I was 💯 with you until I played this one. It has the magic!
Your so skilled
@Charlie28-rv2mx thanks Charlie. Hope you have a great Christmas 🎄
beautiful
@@flowers4madi I love this guitar ❤️
I don’t know this one!! what’s it called? Beautiful playing, Norman was my gateway.
Gorgeous pick guard though 😅
@@LisaPiza your gorgeous
@thecanadianflatpicker 😊
😂Is that a sj-200 light aged? I would to like to try it😅
@크레이브ACW it's a regular J-200 but man it's awesome
Martin sounds really good. Gibson sounds great.
Great comparison. Is there very much difference between the neck profiles of the two guitars? I read that the recording king has a thin v. I usually play a tele or a strat would it be very different?
@darrenhughes8106 . The recording king had more of an old school soft v neck. The martin neck is hard to describe after 65 years of playing. But it's perfect. I liked the feel of the recording kind more I think because the strings had a wider spacing.
@ thanks for the reply.
@@darrenhughes8106 anytime
Too twangy for my taste. Great picking though.
Great picking. For the money... not even close.
The Yamaha made for a better blue grass guitar.. the Gibson is more mellowed out. Yamaha projected out better. And for the money, it'd be hard to beat..
@@liberalsrmentallyflawed3611 absolutely. The yamaha is amazing . The gibson is like a warm hug
Sounds good but not as good as the martin
@jamiemacdonald4994 you are a die hard martin fan lol
Oo, sassy one :)
@@LisaPiza hehe
you’re a super-good, player.. and you’re right…the Yamaha sounds amazing, for only $300… it also looks like the Martin has a much lighter polyurethane finish… which could help account for the warmer, more mellow sound (and of course, the Martin sounds like a real, vintage Martin)… the Yamaha will sound even better, if the polyurethane finish is removed
@@Matt-oy7pz absolutely. I appreciate that. The yamaha is incredible
Martin sounds better fuller, richer but No for the monies, Yes for the resale and demand
Good job! An honest players opinion!
@@lownotehd appreciate that 🙏
goddamn cowboi, nice playing :D
@@Yettibuhayat I appreciate it 🙏
Did you have any issues with the Recording king Rd 328? Stores say they stopped selling bc of bridge issues and not holding up well? 😔 Leaning towards 1 though 😅
@VMC-V no issues with this one. But anything can happen with imports. Worth trying one if you can. Otherwise I'd say order one from a good shop.
@thecanadianflatpicker thank you for your reply! I'm not able to try one in shop I'm just going to have to order it and I see Sweetwater has them with a good set of deal it's going to be a while till I'm able to get one but definitely shooting for it! 💞
@@VMC-V awesome let me know how it goes.
Nice review and great playing. Thanks.
@@petrotmyrcz308 appreciate that 🙏
Always fun to compare Hugh and low end guitars... .so many things to consider before buying a guitar....buy one that fits your hands and satisfies your need. For a bluegrass sound the Yamaha was really good, the Martin has a more rounded sound...plus it's older....and worth the money. I'd like to see a Yamaha/Eastman comparison. Thanks for the video...
The Martin has a little advantage because it's aged. And the Brazilian Rosewood in my opinion. The Recording King is a great guitar but it's not a Martin. As much as we want it to be. But it's also way better than about all the cheaper guitars out there and some of the more expensive ones. And it has a good clarity that you won't get with a laminate guitar. I think as the RD-328 ages, it will be a little closer in sound and the guitar will come into it's own more. I love mine but the V neck and flat radius of the fingerboard is not for everyone. It takes a little getting used to. Overall, to get a new guitar at the price of the Recording King RD-328 with the same materials is probably non-existent. Hard to be the price. Adirondack Spruce top, Indian Rosewood back and sides, all solid. And a Mahogany neck. It does have a poly plastic finish though. I am not crazy about that. But I still think it's the best deal out there. That or a Blue Ridge.
You are also comparing a guitar that has been breaking in for about 70 years, and comparing it to a new one, different gauge strings and all. I sat that Recording King held its own. I just wished it did not have her V neck. I don’t like them. My hands don’t work well on a V necked guitar. Today, my two favorite guitars that are not Martins, are that Recording King, and the Yamaha LL16.
@pickin4you yesir very very true. Yes I like any neck as long as it's not too small. Appreciate the input
That’s same damn fine picking sir!

@omax1023 finally and analogy that makes sense to me lol 🇨🇦 Appreciate it!
I might have to try one
I had a Yamaha in the late 1970's it was a F-450 I believe. I'm sorry I got rid of it in the 1990's. I have been chasing that sound ever since. With 2 Taylor's, and 3 Martin's. Still not the same. Though my latest acoustic, the Martin 00028 has a sound like you mentioned during the rests. It is like there is a quiet sound, and timber still resonating when no notes are being played. Hard to explain. Like you said. I also like dead (old) strings. I stopped using any kind of picks/plectrums. Use only fingers now. But still do miss that Yamaha. Best bang for the buck ever for me on an acoustic guitar. Too bad I didn't realize it at the time. Guitars are like woman. They may all be beautiful in some way. But, no two are exactly the same.
@johntiger5 brother you and I are birds of a feather. I couldn't agree more on all fronts. A Yamaha f450 is that rosewood?
both sound terrible to my ears but then again I like the Gibson sound
Amazing work!
Really appreciate it, I think I got a good sound out of this one.
@thecanadianflatpicker Yeah man, you did very well. Keep it up, bro! We support you!
@Cameramanultimate that's great to hear. I'll work on so more content soon!
@@thecanadianflatpicker Yeah! Let's go!
My first guitar was an FG 800. For the price and for a learner, can't be beat. I also purchased an FG 830. Beatiful burst finish. For me, what I do not like is the narrow nut width. The quality / craftsmanship is great on both. I now own a Gibson Hummingbird Original, Gibson Southern Jumbo Original, Gibson J45 Standard. and two Martin D18, one natural finish the other 1933 Ambertone finish. The D18 are exceptionally great sounding guitars. I sold the FG 800 to my cousin. And gave the FG 830 to a beginner. Although, recently thinking of purchasing another Yamaha. For night time outdoor cookouts and campfires. Humid, airy nights don't effect them like higher end solid wood guitars. My honest opinion. For the money, Yamaha Guitar are a very good buy..
@liberalsrmentallyflawed3611 that is just a superb guitar collection. Yes yamaha makes a great guitar for travelling. Unless you buy the fg9 which is actually more $$ than a d18. I always wanted to try a d18 authentic. It's one of the few guitars I haven't played yet. Thanks for sharing 🙏
How many years of learning and playing bluegrass does this take😅....
Not as long as you might think. I'm fairly new to bluegrass compared to most players. Keep practicing, I'm always here if you have questions or want advice.
@@thecanadianflatpickeryes! I've been playing for 30 years. I learned all the Jerry Garcia stuff early on, but he dumbed it down into a bluesy/bluegrass hybrid. It's a whole new thing for me now, trying to play straight bluegrass licks freely.
Keep it up man, sounds great!
Thank so much. Will do. It's amazing what new strings can do haha
Sounds beautiful, what pick do you use?
I just picked up an L6m with solid Engelmann spruce top and layered mahogany back and sides to hang on the wall for easy access..I play it everyday..my d18 is in the closet more than usual 😀 I paid 1800 for the d18 and 400 for the Yamaha and its pretty amazing...
@@SteveMiller-yw7kv that's awesome. I haven't played a solid top yamaha that didn't sound great.
What strings do you put on your acoustics?
@@iryan9 I used ernie ball light PB on my Gibson, d'addario nickle bronze on my Martin D-28. The ernie ball strings are great
@ thanks so much for the reply. Heard a lot of good things about the nickel bronze, I’ll have to order a pack of those next string change. Do you use 12 or 13s typically?
@iryan9 Absolutely. They are great. I usually use 12s
I also use Nickle Bronze D' addario strings on a Gibson Southern Jumbo Original. Mahogany/ Spruce. I have Martin P/B Lifespan 2.0 Treated strings on my Gibson Hummingbird Original, Gibson J45 Standard, and both of my Martin D18.. all are strung up with 12s....
@@liberalsrmentallyflawed3611 awesome. I really do prefer the tone and feel of 12s
Being Canadian I'm surprised you didn't compare the Seagul S-6. Although it is around $500....it is an outstanding guitar for the money.
@gregskyles4012 that's a great idea. Maybe that's my next video!
I have a ooo Recording King with Adirondack spruce top that I paid $800 for. I sold my 2021 Martin D-18. Yamaha FG Red Label guitars are awesome too.
@235buz wow cool. One of my students has a recording king and I loved it so much he let me borrow it lol
I am a new beginner and just purchased a brand new Yamaha FS 830 with solid sitka spruce top and laminated rosewood sides and back for $349 .. i am a total beginner and just starting to learn to play BUT i am amazed at the build quality and the sounds and sustain .. i think i made a great choice for my first guitar
@TADDs101 Yes, a solid top yamaha is har to beat. I've never played the rosewood series. I've heard they are awesome. With a guitar like that I'm sure you'll be playing tunes in no time. Feel free to let me know how you progress.
I bought one for my first guitar 1 year ago. I upgraded to an LL16D, but I still play the FG830 every week.
@@TADDs101 Don't forget to upgrade your saddle and nut. It'll play much better.
@antipodesman2 how expensive is that to have done? In what way will it play better ? Thanks
@dg111fu man I really am going to have to try an 830
Thanks for the comparison😊 Could you do the comparison between D-28 and 1937 aged?
@크레이브ACW wow I never thought of that. That's a great idea. My authentic is out for repair and I won't have it back until after the winter. Once I get it back I will absolutely do that comparison.
Thank you for the comparison both guitars sounded great and your playing was was so good to listen to
@kinnonkerr6532 really appreciate the input! Glad you liked it. Cheers, Al
I am the original owner of a Yamaha FG-160, built in Taiwan. While it has a laminate top, that 50+ year old guitar sounds great. Original tuning machines, too. You can’t beat Yamaha for sound and value.
@tmo7734 that's awesome. I'd love to hear something like that. I've only ever played one vintage yamaha owned by one of my students, it was amazing.
@ Thanks for your comment. Best wishes for a joyous season.
@@tmo7734 you too!
The Yamaha has great sustain and clarity because its tone is brighter. I’m a huge fan of Yamaha instruments.
@@tmo7734 100% true. And me too, they are incredible!
I've made similar comparisons with Yamaha and Martin acoustics. Yamaha lacks that classic Martin warmth but what it may lack it totally makes up for in over-all tone and sustain. I have a cheap, back in the day, Yamaha 1975 FG-75 that sounds darn nice. A couple of years ago I scored a beat up FG-735 from Music-Go-Round, had a cracked top and slightly lifted, mismatched tuning peg, and had all kinds of playing miles on it. It outplayed damn near every other guitar in the store so I took it home and repaired it. That Vintage Cherry Sunburst beauty is something to behold and hear! I have a new FG830 which is incredible also. But what has surprised me most was a really abused FG800 i bought from Goodwill that had a large break in the back and a dozen severe nicks on the top, with a mahogony neck that was completely dented and scratched. Even in its broken state sounded quite good! Practiced my luthier skills on it; fixed the back "hole", and made numerous minor repairs. It plays and sounds amazing! Don't get me wrong. I love my Martin D16, My Guild D50 and D25, but they are and should be amazing. Almost everyday i get to do a one-on-one shoot out between the expensive dreadies and the cheaper Yamahas. Yamaha always hold's its own and sometimes I just like the way they play better.
@karstenewald5324 wow that's awesome. Thanks so much for sharing. I've never played an fg 75 ot an fg 735. Are those rosewood?
An LL16 would be more comparable.
I think I'll pick up one those Yamahas. Never felt good about taking my Martin D-18 outside at a picnic or on a road trip but the Yamaha would be perfect without the worry.
@gonshocks absolutely. I've seen some horror stories with people bringing martins out, that's for sure. A Yamaha is no big deal because they are so tough and easier to replace.
