I just bought one of these guitars today for $229.99. Unbelievable guitar for the price. It literally competes with my Martin HD28 and my Taylor 714 (which I modded into a 914). There is not one dull fret on the Yamaha. These guitars are incredible!
I got an older FG800 in sunburst and a few marks on it but generally in good shape with a slightly flatter fretboard and .010-047 D'Addario strings for $140. I like it and for very cheap used, it is a nice guitar.
Just bought 1 as I was looking for a travel guitar and am too afraid to travel with my Taylor 414. After a day of playing through my repertoire, I am amazed this is 299 CDN. You will not regret purchasing this...
I am a finger-style player and I play a Yamaha FG800j with a LR baggs HI-FI pickup and a low action setup. This guitar has a 25" scale length and a very comfortable playing neck. I also have very expensive Martins (OM21) and Breedlove (Premier Concert) guitars. The Yamaha is by far my favorite because it just sounds and plays fantastic. Yamaha has proven you don't have to spend a lot of money to have a great guitar.
@thecanadianflatpicker I really am enjoying it. I learned my first 8 chords and am trying to build up my rhythm and calluses. Its nice to have a guitar that feels easy to pick up and play. I don't have much to compare it against as it is my first but I feel like it has everything I need and is not as fussy as some other guitars I've held. Fussy is vague but something in how difficult it is to press strings and how often a guitar needs to be tuned is what I mean.
Well for a laminate nato (less premium wood) b/s guitar that costs 10 times cheaper, and still sounds great, versus a premium full solid-wood guitar, i think it's incredible.
Great comparison! I just got mine a week ago. I did modify it a little bit. I replaced the nut and saddle with bone and the plastic pegs with rosewood pegs. I did a short before and after video. I should have used a pick as well, but I have not used a pick regularly in years. I think it is a very nice sounding acoustic. Not the best for beginners I think because the length and width of the neck and shape will make it hard for people without the calluses and ability to stretch and press down. I am extremely happy that I have this guitar and well worth the price!
This guitar spacing for fg800j is a little small for the fingers. But it might be good for small finger. beside the space of frets as well is a little short almost not enough room for three fingers.
Last year, I went to Long and mcquade in Saint John Canada just for a store trip. I wasn't expecting to buy anything. I went to the acoustics room just to try some guitars. I played everything there: gibsons, Martins, Taylors, etc... And I saw one Fg800J in the corner of the last wall there. I notice the impressive dark fretboard. I got the guitar and BAAANNNNNNGGGG! THE YAMAHA WAS BEST IN SOUND THAN THE OTHERS GUITARS IN THE STORE! no kidding... 300 bucks. WAAAAAAAAYYYYY better than the most expensive ones. I couldn't believe. I bought it right away. Best sounding acoustic guitar that I ever have!
I just bought one on Goodwill Auction, took a ton of the bottom of the bridge, plays ok, but the sound hangs almost as good as my Taylor 314. (Oh yes, a little over $100. & That is total with freight.
Good comparison, Yamaha make quite exceptional guitar's, acoustic's particularly, however listening to them both, the Gibson has it,but it's close,I have an FG 830, and it's excellent. Yamaha's are my pick in that price/range, Consistency is main reason. Gibson's & Martin's are definitely are quite superb, but the price can make them out of the reach of many players, but a good player can make ALMOST anything sound good 😊😊😊
Hi, what does that "J" indicate? I looked at the Yamaha website, and didn't find the designation. Thanks. I've seen a "T" for sale, and I assume it means "tinted" to look older. So, "J"?
It means jumbo. It’s a dreadnaught. They also make an fg800s that stands for small. Same guitar just smaller. I think the s sounds brighter but too small for bigger hands(me!)
IMO the Yamaha had that booming sound of a martin the Gibson was a little muddier sounding on the bottom end to my ear but both great sounding guitars it's amazing to me that you can get that great booming sound for a quarter of the price I bet that makes those die hard d28 guys scratch thier head like a bull.
The Yamaha made for a better blue grass guitar.. the Gibson is more mellowed out. Yamaha projected out better. And for the money, it'd be hard to beat..

Super helpful and great playing! Looking for a first acoustic to get my kiddo and I think I found my answer!

Im doing it today for my first acoustic guitar. Thanks for helping me finalize the decision.

Sounds great for the money but not as complex tonally as the Gibby but for someone's first guitar it's great.
Absolutely

@@loooopeytunes Can you not read? I said it sounded great for the money. No way it's going to sound as good as an all solid wood guitar though...
@@WysteriaGuitarwell one is rw and the other is nato/mahogany. For bg and a strummer guitar I’d rather have the Yamaha in this comparison😊

this guy made his own intro music and i love that
I'd love to hear a more direct comparison between the yamaha and gibson. With a mic in front of the soundhole playing the same licks.
I can do that!

Off of the bottom of bridge to make it very playable😊
It sounds exactly like a D-18 I used to own.
That Yamaha just kicked the Gibson in the arse from this end of the tube.
Lol yesir
Just love them Yamaha guitars, yes I have one YAMAHA FG-TA, LOVE IT.

I got it with the electronics- it is a good buy thanks for the demos I like my Martin
Thanks for watching.
The Yamaha is mellower. The Gibson really does have a great sound. I only started bobbing my head when you switched to that one
I agree!
Just want to learn the lick u played . Any name of such kind of music?

It means it's a short scale guitar. Plays great
Good playing
the only thing I dont like about the FGs is the string spacing is way to close for my bigger fingers. Had to get a 1 3/4 nut guitar instead.
I've own the fs800 and I felt the same, then I sold it. But I came across an FG800 that had kind of regular string spaces. Bought it and I'm happy.
How can you tell if the Gibson is better through a RUclips video recorded with who knows what kind of audio recording equipment?
I love my FG800. Gibson sounds better though. I take my guitar everywhere, and I'd rather take my $300 one than my $4000 one.
Absolutely
They are both good
Great playing and yes 300 dollars I would pay it all day long!
Yesir I think I might have to get it haha
The J in fg800J is meaning smaller scale?

It does sound good, but from I have seen, there is no lefty version.
No lefty? Are you in Canada? If so check long and mcquade website.

can you get your money back for the gibson?
Maybe haha. Should I??
no just kidding, i also have the fg800 its my best guitar@@thecanadianflatpicker
The Gibson sounds slightly better to my ear listening on a cell phone. I could use the $3,700 extra cash for a lot of other things.
