At around 1:11:10 there is a mention of "Roman Vomitorium" which made me jump up instantly because it is a pet peeve of mine that people think it was for vomiting. In reality, Vomitoriums were passages in Amphitheaters or similar structures which allow a crowd to exit swiftly. The word comes from a term meaning "to spew forth" which is likely where we get the modern English term vomit from. Aubrey's offhanded comment about the blood pressure thing just retroactively changed so much of my memories. I was really fat when I was younger and nurses would always struggle so hard to take my blood pressure and have to do it over and over again. I would be in such pain because they would be taking my blood pressure so many times and crushing my arm repeatedly while telling me there was something wrong with the machine. I used to be so embarrassed by it thinking that my arm was just too fat for it to work properly. When I lost weight, the blood pressure cuff suddenly worked perfectly every time and they never had a problem with it. I thought it meant I was just skinny enough that it worked properly. The levels of retroactive irony there could probably be cut with a knife.

I wasn't homeschooled nor do i believe my family is fundamental Christian. But I was raised by evangelical converts and I remember my mother would lord the threat of homeschool and being isolated as a threat anytime she found out i was identifying as anything but straight to anyone. I would come home terrified if I would be met with happy mom who showered me with affection or angry mom who would beat me and threaten to take me away from my only support. I ended going to a Christian school that somehow revitalized my faith (still deconstructing tbh) and encouraged me to enter anthropology. I'm pursuing a degree in political and cultural anthropology and I've been thinking about making a senior dissertation on how Christianity was twisted into a weapon for the far right (also i want a honor cord). This video really inspired me and I'm rambling but it was awesome :D

Rowling attacked a woman, just two days ago, attacking for currently being "too successful" at attempting to fufill her life's ambition. This attack has led to other attacks of thousands of transphobes which had to go to define women has having XX chromosomes, abandoning Rowling's definition that women are the producer of the large gametes (because the athlete in question produces large gametes while not having any sound evidence of her chromosomes). Transphobia doesn't just hurt trans-women, it hurst all women.

This is a super interesting discussion and I appreciate it! I can't not say, and I'm biased as a person who spent a long time working in the fitness industry and struggling through my own issues ... it's not factual to say that there is no relationship between movement and nutrition, and the results we see in the dimensions and functions of our bodies. I just think it's a lot more nuanced than quantities/ intensity of those things. A lot of times, the conversations leave out the very convoluted systems that have rendered so much of our "food" supply to be not real food. And the conversation around movement leaves out the fact that humans didn't evolve in gyms, and our physical wellness, mobility etc are directly shaped by whole shifts in the paradigm of survival. It's so much bigger than self-control and the morality-based judgments we lob on ourselves and each other.

the Dark Brandon stuff has a LOT of layers to it, which heavily involved MANY online political commentators (mostly Twitch leftists) trying to out-edgelord each other. it existed for a VERY long time before the dem establishment finally embraced it. The reasons for the negative reaction are so absurd. I love Love Simon precisely because it's not a "suffering story". For years the classic gay movie recipe was to have a pathetic and almost mute protagonist who was bullied by everybody; had sex in a seedy club or a filthy bathroom; and at some point he got beaten up. At the end of the story, the protagonist ended up dead, thrown out of his house, or in the best case, abandoned by a closet lover (If the scriptwriter was "creative🙄🙄", there was a beating in the filthy bathroom... so gross🙄🙄🙄). I hated those movies, all of them and by year 2000 I was already sick of gay movies. The first gay movie I liked was "The Big Gay Musical" ( Fred M. Caruso and Casper Andreas), because it didn't have any of those horrific elements, had very likeable characters and had a very nice ending. And I love it! I'm glad Love Simon exist, I have a good time whenever I watch it.

I feel like I shouldnt have to get into this but re: 1:09:15, Biden passed a law that banned trans minor *surgery*, specifically. Trans surgery on minors is a thing that does not happen. No trans person gets surgery until they reach the age of majority, and only after theyve been on HRT. The law was redundant, and Biden passed it strategically so that Republican lawmakers leave him alone.

Oh my god I'm so fucking online. The "Let's go Brandon" started at a NASCAR race that was being covered by a news station. The hillbillies started chanting "Fuck Joe Biden" and the newscaster said they were saying "Let's go Brandon " (Brandon was one of the race car drivers). The hillbillies then said that it was a conspiracy by the media to cover for Joe Biden. THEN people on the internet started joking about calling Biden "Brandon". 37:45 I like to think of memes as a form of folk art, like quilting or basket weaving. There are accepted forms and styles, but we use it to make sense of our own environments. It feels inherently inauthentic when those who have official power try to use a folk art that was developed by those who don't have power.

The idea of young people not having had the experience in America of a presidential candidate to be excited about. As a millennial who turned 18 the summer of 2008 which meant the first presidential candidate I got to vote for I was so excited for.. to just ride through that excitement dissipating and then just the feeling of being excited again. I am excited to maybe get the first president who is a woman.
