    I was someone that was on ozempic, or one of their sister brands to be honest. It felt so great to not feel hungry, to only be able to eat small portion so I don’t get sick, like my thin friends… It felt virteus. Even getting sick, throwing up every day was something i veiwed as making me a better person… I’m not smart, don’t have a job worth braging about, quite ugly and fat. And this kinda gave me hope that now, maybe, I could have something; thinnes. I’ve been off it a year now, as my prescription ran out and I could not afford the price. Getting off it felt terrible, the hunger hit me like a brick, and all the compliments I got from friends and family stopped. I haven’t really gained the weight as I found out I have some other medical issues that incrised my weight gain, and I remain stable, not losing or gaining. It’s a bit weird getting so personal in a RUclips comment section, but I felt like sharing, to not be sitting so alone with this. Thank you

      i feel this so hard. i dont have ozempic experience but my weight has fluctuated throughout the years to where i have relatives "complimenting" my body, usually at points when im super stressed out and not the healthiest. its really weird to go from compliments like that to nothing because it leaves you with the feeling that they are still surveilling ur body but dont have a compliment for u anymore

      I haven't tried ozempic, but I feel your pain. Years ago, my doctor tried to push me on to liraglutide, which is essentially the same thing (suppresses hunger). I was scared, so I tried bulimia instead, and oh my gosh the compliments started rolling in. It felt incredible to be treated as a human. But of course, it didn't last, because it never can (you either stop or you die). So I gained it all back and then some over the pandemic, but I'm trying to find other parts of life to find joy in. I got married at my heaviest, and had a baby not too long after, and am now studying medicine. I love my life, but nothing feels quite the same as when people saw me as a human. They don't know they're doing it, but you can feel it. And I miss that inclusive feeling.

      I feel like they push this dichotomy on us to get us to fight. Ozempic is cheap to make. it doses in tiny quantities. 1 55 gallon drum of it is a thousand years worth of it for one person. making more of it would be as easy as opening a couple valves.
      I also think if weight control could help you avoid or delay diabetes, making you wait until you get the diagnosis to get the drug is both expensive in the long term for everyone involved and cruel. saying at an a1c of 6.2 you get it covered but at 5.9 you get "wait till you're 'sick'" is messed up imo.
      Like...how bout we stop it now while there's still some tread on my pancreas' tires?

      I will say, as someone taking Zepbound (same drug as Mounjaro, just produced and marketed for weight loss), I was .1 A1C shy of a prediabetes diagnosis. I'd rather take this medication and not become diabetic, and I'm feeling well on it. Access is a struggle for everyone, but it's unfair to blame people taking it to lose weight (and avoid diabetes in the first place) when it's the companies who can't keep up with demand. Most doctors won't prescribe Ozempic or Mounjaro to non-diabetics (as those are the branded versions specifically for diabetes), and send them towards Wegovy or Zepbound, which have the allocations for obesity/every other condition that is helped by these medications. I can't help how much of one or the other the companies are making.

    I think that a thin body is seen as a REWARD for what’s considered good character-disciplined, cares about their health, intelligent enough to know how take care of themselves, etc. But achieving a thin body through taking something like Ozempic is seen as cheating - getting the reward without having the desirable character traits/without putting in the work. When of course thin/fat bodies have little to no relation to the possession of these character traits. The mentality it just so gross.

    as a fat person who worked in a weight loss clinic i have a looooot of thoughts on this. big agree with everything you both said. it was so crazy and sad to hear the way patients would talk abounded their own bodies especially as i watched them change. very indicative of how society still views fat people as a whole. i worked there for 2 years and had initially considered getting bariatric surgery with one of our surgeons but after i started therapy i realized it wasn't something i needed in order to love my body. it was wild to me tho how bold some of the patients were in their comments to me and my body. i got lots of assumptions that i just HAD to be working up for surgery since i'm fat and had access. same with assumptions that i was taking one of these weight loss drugs as my clinic prescribed A LOT of them. but a lot of my coworkers were taking them and after seeing the side effects 1st hand it was a no from me, dog 👀 i had also reached a point of acceptance for my body where i didn't feel the need to do something like that. no judgement to those who do of course. i just know that losing the weight isn't always the self image bandaid people think it is and that healing your relationship with your body goes deeper than seeing the number go down on the scale. i really appreciate your video and that you're bringing awareness to the larger implications of the ozempic trend. i love this podcast and will absolutely be checking out aubrey's ASAP 💕

      as a fat person that works at a clothing store that caters to skinny people & then a little bit of the ugliest plainest most boring tiny selection for plus sizes, so many fat customers assume i must also be self-hating about my weight.
      a woman looking for longer sleeves said "don't they know *we* hate our arms?" she was in her 40's or 50's... i am in my late 20's & haven't felt that way since highschool at it's peak & it's just becoming less & less of an issue. my partner loves my chubbiness everywhere, including my arms, & so do i. it just made me feel so sad for her that she's still in that painful self consciousness :(
      i mainly get skinny people saying fatphobic things about themselves to me directly or right next to me & i have to make a moment where they have to be self aware what they did was awful while also trying not to get fired or angry cry (i cry so easily when i get angry & i hate it so much 😭)
      if skinny customers say something like "ugh i feel so fat now" after trying on clothes, i just cheerfully look at them saying "i wouldn't know what that's like :))" or something like that.
      people are so deranged in their fatphobia, but that's the nature of any bigotry or unjustified hatred: it doesn't make sense at all, there is so logic for it.

So then I felt the need to go harder and if I didn't lose any more weight I was a failure. I was obsessed. i feel like people who have never looked into what bariatric surgery actually is have no idea what it really entails. even if you're really big, and even if you're big and really want to lose weight, surgery is such a big change and often causes issues that are permanent, nutrient deficiencies, and i've seen people say that they could never eat normally again afterwards.
      i strongly believe that those surgeries (and the less permanent/invasive ones too) are very useful tools and possibly life saving for a lot of the people who get them, but they're not easy mass solutions that you can just get in lieu of working on yourself, whether that be weight loss, other health measures, or just self acceptance and finding a way to be comfortable with yourself.

      It is sad that people think that way about their bodies, but I don't like that your chalking a want to lose weight as solely being about body image issues.
      I long ago stopped caring what people think about my body, my thoughts on it are neither positive or negative. And that's fine, but when I got a health issue solely caused by obesity I had to lose weight and I know it's something I should've done long before.
      It's good to be comfortable in our bodies, but it needs to be said that obese people don't have a long time where they will be comfortable. We all reach health issues eventually, and you are moving the needle forward if you're obese.

      @FilzupBilburp *Loud incorrect buzzer noise* Funny that you actually bring that up, because one of the first things she brings up on her podcast is y’all’s weird fascination with equating cigarette use to fatness. Aubrey isn’t arguing for you to live a sedentary life, she has on numerous occasions said that exercise does make you healthy, what you seem to have missed is the part where she argues that weight and health aren’t correlated. Which they aren’t, you can diet and exercise as much as you want, but that does not remove other factors like medication, health issues, or just a predisposition to being fat. She is not the “opposite of smart”, when what she’s saying is well documented information. Also why do you care? Is there a mysterious fat boogie man causing you issues? Why does the look of someone else’s body bother you? That’s her whole point. The pseudoscience that is diet culture is predicated on the idea that you, the consumer, will continue to advocate for diet culture by using terms like “scientific evidence” when science itself doesn’t back your claims.

      I worry it's sometimes being prescribed to "treat" eating disorders. I read an article where an lady (who wasn't fat btw) said that before Ozempic thinking about what she ate was like a full time job for her, then after Ozempic she would have, like, an apple and a xanax for dinner and feel totally fine. If someone who doesn't have any health issues is so consumed with calorie counting that it's making it hard to live life, that's a psychological issue that needs therapy, not an injection to make their eating disorder less distracting.

    This whole weight obsession thing is odd from the outside looking in.
    I'm a member of the bear community so I don't feel any desire to be thin.
    I don't feel any shame or disgust towards being fat or towards fat people.
    My focus has always been on "how can I take care of my body" and not "How can I look as slim as possible"?
    Every time I see people actively destroying their health in order to drop a few extra pounds I find myself asking "Why? Isn't the purpose of losing that weight to be healthier"? When those same people tell me that I'm destroying my health because I have a belly on me I just roll my eyes.
    If we really want to improve people's health, weight shaming is not the solution. It's a distraction from actual solutions.
    The two things we should try to do right now:
    1. Make our cities more walkable. Cars should be a luxury not a necessity. This will enable people to get out and walk more. Exercise will become a natural part of our lives. People will tough grass more. We'll natuarlly get more sunlight, which will help boost our mood. We'll be able to meet more people out on the street which will help combat lonliness. All of this has positive outcoms for mental AND physial health.
    2. Make food more affordable. Consider putting price caps on grocery items so Walmart/Target and friends can't co-ordinate to raise prices 300% and pretend it's inflation. When clean/healthy food is something everyone can access it'll be easier to stock up on good food instead of the cheap/cost effective junk like hot dogs and ramen noodles.
    Instead of doing this, we take the the hyper individualist approach of just shaming people who look a certain way. It could not possibly be more counter-productive.

    • @AnnekeOosterink
      @AnnekeOosterink 4 месяца назад +12

      You are assuming the point is weight loss promotion, we know that shaming doesn't work, we know that dieting doesn't work, we know that a society that actively harms people for existing does not work. The goal is not weight loss. That might be individual goals for some people (as in, for themselves) but as a whole, the point is not to make people thinner or healthier, by fat shaming and hurting them and making sure they never go to a doctor again. It's just bigotry.
      It's the same with the concern trolling, it's been proven to make people feel worse, and besides that doesn't do anything for anyone's weight or health. "Oh, if you just lost 8000000 pounds, you'd be healthier!" But they don't know anything about anyone's health at all, they just want to be mean bullies to fat people without other people calling them out for bullying, they pretend they are not actually hurting people by acting as if it's about general health, when it's just bullying. It's not and has never been about actual concern.

    • @charvisaur4184
      @charvisaur4184 4 месяца назад +8

      You are right.
      Hating minorities has become a social taboo.
      But fatphobia is not only accepted, it's encouraged. To not partake in this bullying is seen as "Enabling".
      Fat people are the holy grail of plausible deniablility for bigoted people.
      I'm not going to be a part of that. Studies have shown that people who experience fatphobia experience more negative health symptoms than those who do not. This is after you factor out weight as a variable.
      This should come as a surprise to no one. Stress alone is proven to take years off your life and cause a person to age faster. I don't need to explain how experiencing bigotry from close friends/family and strangers can cause a person significant long-term stress.
      When you also factor in the increased risk of guilt, shame, anxiety, and depression this causes. It should be dead obvious that shaming people is not the solution. Whether you think it comes from good intentions or not.
      Bigotry is never the solution. It masqurades as one while distracting us from the real solutions.

    • @MoonGalleon22

      Honestly point 3 should be "encourage intuitive eating principles". Reject diets, actually eat when you're hungry, pay attention to your food as you eat it, and stop when you're feeling full. Exercise and eat food based on what you enjoy and what makes your body feel good, not because you're performing suffering for other people! Like they're all principles about reconnecting with your body and sensuality and just letting yourself experience joy and satisfaction - I can't see a world where that's not the ideal way of building your life and eating habits, and yet people criticise it because "oh, it's not guaranteed to help people lose weight, they might just eat bad wrong terrible food instead of eating 1 salad a day."

(He is maybe 10-15 pounds overweight max) It's really reminiscent of these doctors who pushed opiods. We really do not know the long term effects this will have on society. It's scary.

    • @thatjillgirl
      @thatjillgirl 4 месяца назад

      @@caseyw.6550 The opioid comparison is pretty apt. During the beginnings of the opioid epidemic, a lot of prescribers were trained to readily treat patients' pain. They started being told pain was another vital sign to be monitored and treated as needed, and it was wrong to be stingy with the pain meds and let their patients suffer. And of course, there is some truth in that. But the risks of opioids were massively downplayed and other pain treatment options weren't promoted as much, and the result was a generation of doctors who had been taught to consider opioids as a completely reasonable treatment option for way more patients than it really should have been. And now weight loss is much the same. So many doctors have been trained that the "obesity epidemic" is killing millions and that the number one thing overweight patients need to do is lose weight. They are primed to assume that if you are overweight and your lab values aren't bad yet, they very soon will be, and that most health concerns you might come to them with could be solved with weight loss. And so they're pushing these drugs because they've been trained that obviously everyone needs to lose weight. It's simply not true, but it will take quite a bit of a paradigm shift to correct it, just as it did with opioids.

      its a byproduct of us learning our worth correlates with work and how much you can dedicate yourself to it. working hard is seen as a virtue in capitalist society, so it is no wonder that when we have been pushed to see health and thin bodies as virtous, and in order for that incorrect facade to be upheld we also need to show the hard work that goes behind it.
      otherwise, when people are faced with the reality that often how you look like is a symbol of class, and that most without wealth will never be able to outrun the genetic and environmental cards we've been dealt, it stings because its a reality most do not want to face. they want the story of the virtous fat person who worked hard and now looks fit, someone who is able to masquerade as the upper class good looking person, because acknowledging the immense wealth blockades to conventional beauty is depressing.

    At around 1:11:10 there is a mention of "Roman Vomitorium" which made me jump up instantly because it is a pet peeve of mine that people think it was for vomiting. In reality, Vomitoriums were passages in Amphitheaters or similar structures which allow a crowd to exit swiftly. The word comes from a term meaning "to spew forth" which is likely where we get the modern English term vomit from.
    Here's a link to Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vomitorium#:~:text=A%20vomitorium%20is%20a%20passage,the%20end%20of%20an%20event.

    the idea that someone used ozempic and "cheated" their way to thinness is such a bizarre chain of thought. Workout classes are just tools for losing weight (and more generally better health), but, so is ozempic. It's the same kind of energy I get around student loan forgiveness discourse, that train of thought of 'because I had it rough, you have to have it rough too,' it just strikes me as a type of weird envy.

  • @RoxaneJ14
    @RoxaneJ14 4 месяца назад +11

    Another side of this discourse is the idea that fat people are lazy, have earned their disgusting condition, are letting themselves go etc. Basically being fat is a reflection of your inner poor moral substance.
    Which of course is a gross misunderstanding of differences in metabolism, genetics, what a healthy body looks like, intersectionalism with poverty, race or other minorities. But it's easier to think people are pathetic and miserable (which is of course only assumed and not necessarily true, and if true at least in part due to a fatphobic atmosphere rather than isolated personal conditions) by their own fault and moral failure than because we fail each other as a society, that our health system is broken and that the profit of a few has taken over the greater good we owe each other
    (That's why we want fat people to to earn their weight loss and improved status through suffering, and surgery or medication are considered cheating because it's a shortcut with no repentance)

  • @SaraphineTheMer-Queen
    @SaraphineTheMer-Queen 4 месяца назад +19

    29:44 I think part of this also has to do with people wanting to hide behind their judgments of people's bodies and fat phobia by adding this kind of moral judgment that makes it seem as if they're somehow superior when they judge fat folks. They use the whole "If they just had the willpower, they could lose the weight", "If they just ate salads instead of fast food and made healthier choices then they could lose weight". So by framing it as something that the person is responsible for, it makes it easier to blame them for not having a body that society expects, and being able to control a myriad of factors that were never in their control in the first place. But of course when you really look at the innumerable factors that make up a person's life, you see that it isn't so simple and that we have a lot less control than we like to believe. It also doesn't help that we're brainwashed by marketing and told that we can have, do, or be anything we want if we just follow these 5 easy steps or buy this supplement or do this workout by unscrupulous people looking to make money off of our insecurities by feeding into them. Shaming ourselves and others into fitting a societal mold is so toxic. Realizing that you can't simply blame someone for not having a body you think they should because you believe they're lazy or careless or lacking willpower leaves that person with the fact that they have issues with other people's bodies and are judging them for it. The problem isn't with the person who's fat, it's with the person who is so cruel, shallow and critical of the fat person and how they treat them. But as I said, it's easier to hide behind blaming someone for their failure to be what you expect than to realize you're just a shitty person who is mean to other people who don't necessarily have the privileges you have to look "acceptable" in our society.

    a little late to adding to this conversation though the "right way to lose weight", the character judgement, and moralization of suffering reminds me a lot of a quote from youtuber @That Dang Dad . that quote being, "American culture is predicated on the crippling fear someone, somewhere, is getting something they don't deserve."

I didn't even realize it until she had said it that I did it to another large person at a restaurant the other day, and it was really eye opening to think about it from this angle.

If you want to live in a thinner body I'm not going to judge you for that and I support you doing that in whatever way is available to you that doesn't hurt you or anyone else. I have zero beef with anyone who takes Ozympic and experiencing life changing weight loss, I'm v happy for them I'm sure it feels like a miracle.
