⁠​⁠Business Rule #1: When considering what kind of business to start, buy, or invest in; never, ever, consider a business that is highly regulated such as the trucking industry is. Private Equity, Venture Capital (M&A) and investment bankers despise the trucking industry. Add to that the low barrier to entry which exposes these business illiterates to crooked shippers, carriers and their crooked lease programs, crooked brokers, crooked factoring companies, crooked venders and government over reach on a scale that is incomprehensible makes the trucking industry a poor business choice. Why would anyone in their right mind even consider competing in the trucking business? Answer: Lack of overall business / investment knowledge.

Did anything make you move out of TX other than personal matters? Going to get my tanker and hazmat endorsement in the next 2 weeks and hopefully i get to find a Fuel hauling job out there. It really is wasting your life.. especially otr driving..it is a great back up to have that CDL though,and a good way to save up a good amount of money to then invest into other ventures

After 23 years in the industry, id recommend that if you are thinking about getting your CDL, or are new to the industry, just call your old boss and beg for your old job back at Dollar General, McDonald's or construction or whatever. It's not worth loosing years of your life away from home. For the last 12 years, I was over the road and my wife was someone I visited for a couple days a month and talked to on the phone every day. My 17 year old cousin actually said "Nice to meet you" at Christmas last year. If you have kids, I can't even imagine. You'd be better off selling yourself into slavery in Dubai. It pays better and living conditions are better. I'm done driving and I'm not going back.

Im really glad u found this among your earlier videos. I admit the training ..im halfway , is still hard at times. Getting adjusted being away from home has been harder than i thought. It was sad to find out that because I have a medicated disability I could never be a trucker. It was something I looked forward to.

Trucking is great if you don't want much of a life outside trucking. The owner operator model is pretty much done unless you're in a niche field of trucking. Doing refer,dry van or flatbed as an owner operator is basically less than company driver pay with playing mechanic on your days off. Sure you can invest just as you can with any other job. Talk to guys that have ten years or more in trucking and a lot will tell you they liked driving trucks but not anymore.

There's so many different jobs with CDL work.... There's not much excuse. I've done 2 completely different jobs with 2 completely different skill sets...

I thought the turnover was people leaving their first job, not leaving the industry. If so, of course the turnover is high, the only jobs that train pay peanuts, so new drivers leave the moment they have enough experience to go somewhere else.

OTR is an amazing adventure and good $$$ but its not for everyone. Personally I love it, I save and invest my money, eat right, exercise and sleep well. Im doing fine.

This is facts brother! Glad to see everything working out a few years later because I am about to turn 25 and embark on the same journey. Great video bud! I've escaped the rat race after 20 years of doing a little bit of everything in trucking. Currently do an overnight grocery delivery route. 12 hour shift, No people, No Traffic, Home everyday and only work 4 days on duty. $105k a year in Oklahoma. New folks need to realize there are oppurtunities but it takes time and goals to get there.
