There is a LOT MORE to be done in Serbia in terms of development, ecology, and quality of life. I hope that our neighbors in Albania, North Macedonia and elsewhere will develop as well, so that the whole Balkan can live in prosperity and peace. I think my favorite Romanian food has to be ciorba, all of them! After that, it’s sarmale and ciulama de hribi (porcini mushroom stew with sour cream). For me, the best food and restaurants are in the Moldova region, especially in the north and Bukovina. A close second is the Hungarian cuisine from Szeklerland (Praid, Sovata). I had the best goulash there, even better than in Hungary! Hope you guys had a great time in Sibiu. It’s incredible how Romanians, Germans, and Hungarians came together to build so many of Transylvania’s cities. I love that these places have stood the test of time and still welcome visitors, offering a real taste of European culture.

I am romanian and I had years of not wanting sour cream on my sarmale. But I still tried it (sometimes) because I know that other people likes it in this way ..and now in my 30s (age) I really like sarmale with sour cream 😅 I started to get used to this combination too and now I like it too. 🤤

We have spicy mustard too in Romania (you can find them in supermarkets) ..but a lot of romanians likes or loves especially the sweet mustard.

You guys got sarmale in a perfect weather. The most often time we (romanians) eat sarmale is during winter (or especially during Christmas too). For other (warmer) seasons we eat more mici (cuz mici can also be cooked on a grill) 😁 ..but during winter ..sarmale are starting to become quite popular too.

If you are still staying in Romania, you can visit the city of Craiova, a 3-hour drive away from Bucharest. Craiova is known for the Christmas Market, last year and this year it came out on the 2nd place in the Best Christmas Market top by European Best Destinations website. It is very crowded in weekends. Here we have hood tasty food but we have our strange foods ...for us is normal but for foreigners can be strange as for example: 1 Slănină afumata cu ceapă( smoked king of bakon/more fat, with onions and bread ) This is a food eaten by villagers mostly because is high in calories and they need it because farming is tough. 2 Ciorbă de burtă ( thats soup made out of the stomach tissue of prok or cow ) 3 Untura pe paine ( pork fat spread on the bread) also eaten by people on the villagers for the same reason as the smoked bacon 4 Cartaboş ( it's a kind of sausage stuffed with boiled organs/ pork) some people really enjoy it some of them think that is disturbingly disgusting...I like it 😂 5 Branză de burduf wich is a type of chees that is made up on the Carpathian mountains, the original ones are stuffed in fin bark ...it is good but smells a lot and if you are bad with smells maybe you can't pass over it. There are many more strange foods for the non Romanian people but i think the comments are too long and you won't want to read it ... really consider doing strange foods challenge ...it will get more views and it will challenge you 💪 ❤

Sarmale is a little bit different from sarma from Serbia... the soup on bread is really original but we usually try to eat all the bread as well of we can is for respect for the baker not only for the chef's soup😂❤

The original mici recipes used lamb, but nowadays beef it's used more.

For food try eggplant salad, carp roe salad, tripe soup, beef soup, bean and pork soup. For desert try Savarina, Amandina, Carpati.

Real mici you can taste from Piața Cibin or on Friday/Sunday there is a market close to Hornbach, we call it ,,târg" where you can buy whatever people are selling (mostly their own items, but there are also brand new stuff) and there is also food, including mici 😊. But yeah, if you are not here for a long time, just go to Piața Cibin, near the gate (the exact opposite area from the flower shops) and try there some mici cooked on the grill, they taste soo different and they have good quality meat! You will see the area has some tables and benches for people to enjoy the food there or you can take it with you as take away. If there are other people, who know good places for mici, let us know, by replying to this comment. 😊❤

For show, you should go to Păltiniș. You could take the bus, it is at about 30min by bus from Sibiu.

If you are still in Sibiu, and are looking for something exotic to eat, try to see if roadside stalls sell a type of cheese cured in sheep bladder (brânză de burduf). If that's too exotic, look for cheese cured in pine or fir tree bark (brânză în scoarță de brad), the flavor is quite unique. There is also smoked cheese (cașcaval afumat) and young cheese (caș). If you ask around, there may still be shepherds up high in the Păltiniș mountain area (a very short and scenic drive away) who can let you sample their local cheeses.

It doesn't feel like other Balkans countries cause is not in the Balkans. 😉 You can several flavour in the romanian things... Turkish, Russian, French, German, Hungarian, Austrian... And newer things ... american, italian, spanish... And yes , the language is a romnace language.

You might have misunderstood a bit the way we Romanians typically eat. We don't usually do it like the Italians or French, there are no eight course meals normally, except very special occasions. Instead, we just eat one single large course and that's pretty much it. Sometimes we might get a soup as starter, but that's not exactly common either. Just one food and that's that. We top with with a coffee or beer instead of desert, at the most. That might explain the large portions for you.

For sure you both need to try mici cooked on the grill. They taste much much better from the grill
