Most of the food you eat in your video is not local Shanghai dishes but from other provinces...such as "Mala" is from Sichuan province and the beef noodle is from Xiangyang of Hubei province. Welcome to China and hope you enjoy visiting the energetic, magnificent and multi cultural but harmonic country.

It’s the Sichuan pepper corn that make your mouth numb. You could have ask them to do it less spicy for you. Btw your hair cut looks great. If you still in China, visit Guangzhou or Foshan, Shunde. They have the best cantonese dishes and not that spicy.

It is my hope that the blogger will journey to Xi'an to partake in its rich cultural heritage; a city renowned for its diverse and distinctive culinary offerings. Xi'an stands as the historical epicenter of China, having been designated as a "World Heritage City" by UNESCO in 1981. It holds a paramount place in the annals of Chinese civilization and the Chinese nation, serving as a pivotal birthplace and the initial endpoint of the fabled Silk Road, endowing it with the status of a globally renowned historical metropolis. It shares this distinguished honor with other ancient capitals such as Rome, Athens, Cairo, and others, encapsulating the essence of six of the world's ancient capitals.❤

There is a saying in northern China: If you eat noodles without garlic, the taste will be half as good. It means that when you eat noodles, eating a small bite of raw garlic will make the taste more fragrant. There is another saying, "If you eat (grilled) meat without garlic, the taste will be half as good", which also means the same thing.

Regarding the softshell turtle that appeared in the video, let me explain:
This is a common scam in suburban areas of cities in China. In China, wild animals are often considered tastier than farmed ones, and their prices are usually two to three times higher. Thus, some people pretend to be anglers who have accidentally caught large wild game and sell their "catch" on the streets. However, these are usually not genuinely wild-caught but purchased from elsewhere.
This kind of activity is actually not allowed, but it is very difficult to prove that they are engaged in selling or committing fraud, so the police cannot directly prevent them from setting up their stall. Of course, they would not want you to film them and leave behind any evidence.
Additionally, since COVID-19 was initially thought to have been caused by the trade of wild game, the Chinese government enacted a series of laws in 2020 to restrict the trade of wild animals, including most birds and mammals. However, wild aquatic creatures like softshell turtles are not on the prohibited list. Therefore, you might see such scenes on the streets, where sellers take a chance to sell and then quickly flee. This way, even if the buyer later cooks and discovers that it is not wild, they have no way to find the seller and demand compensation.
