If you are still in Sibiu, and are looking for something exotic to eat, try to see if roadside stalls sell a type of cheese cured in sheep bladder (brânză de burduf). If that's too exotic, look for cheese cured in pine or fir tree bark (brânză în scoarță de brad), the flavor is quite unique. There is also smoked cheese (cașcaval afumat) and young cheese (caș). If you ask around, there may still be shepherds up high in the Păltiniș mountain area (a very short and scenic drive away) who can let you sample their local cheeses.
Sarmale can be made with Sauerkraut or with boiled fresh cabbage. That affects the overall taste. It also depends how the cabbage was put in barrels if it's Sauerkraut. The "sweet" sarmale are made with boiled cabbage. The cat accompanying you was really cute. 😊 The bread in which was the soup would have also been delicious to eat. Glad you had a good time in SIBIU.
In fact, the story of mici goes like this: some 150 years ago, they were selling grilled sausages and ran out of casings, but still had a lot of customers, so they decided to grill the sausages without the casing and, voilà, mici were born. They are usually made of a mixture of ground meats, mixed together with bone broth, condiments and sodium bicarbonate to make them juicy, so they are not cevapcici.
@@zingwibrothersthe traditional ones were made with 100% beef. Nowadays they are mostly mixed with pork and/or lamb (mutton), as most restaurants don't really follow the traditional recipes, they do what's easier (and cheaper) for them. For example, restaurants ruined the dessert called "papanași" which is now basically a fried doughnut with a bunch of crap on top. (It's still very good since the dough has sweet cheese). But the original papanași were nothing like it, other than the shape - they were made with semolina instead of wheat, boiled instead of fried, and incorporated something similar to Italian ricotta cheese. Even the sarmale in restaurants are often not authentic - they are usually much bigger and saltier and fatter than normal ones (salt, sugar, and calories are what customers crave). @@zingwibrothersThat's nonsense made up by people from Bucharest. A lot of people there are part Turkish or Gypsy and I think they perceive this as making them racially inferior. You might have misunderstood a bit the way we Romanians typically eat. We don't usually do it like the Italians or French, there are no eight course meals normally, except very special occasions. Instead, we just eat one single large course and that's pretty much it. Sometimes we might get a soup as starter, but that's not exactly common either. Just one food and that's that. We top with with a coffee or beer instead of desert, at the most. That might explain the large portions for you.

@@zingwibrothers Do you reckon Romania has so many tourists that restaurants can survive on their money only? If yes then indeed prices are too high for the average income in Romania. Just a thought :)
Can you guys stop referring to Romania as "balkans"? Sibiu is really a central european city. The arhitecture, the people, the culture got nothing to do with the Balkans. Us Romanians only consider the the southern part of the country as Balkan.
😂😂 the never ending dilemma. Romania really isn't in the Balkans geographic area. Culturally it has some influences, like every part of Romania has another influence... But Sibiu, 😂, is the most Germanic part of Romania, and no Balkanic in it
@@zingwibrothersOnly a small part of Romania is geographically in the Balkan peninsula, but culturally Romanians (yes, including those in Sibiu) are far more Balkan than anything else. Having said that, Sibiu has very strong Central European and even Western European influences (the "Saxon" settlers were not from the region of Saxony exactly, they were more from what is today Luxemburg, Belgium, Netherlands, and the more Western parts of Germany). Edit: even the French had a presence there, and a ruin of their monastic complex remains in the village of Cârța.
Sibiu has nothing Balkan inside… A small area in RO has some hills that are considered part of Balkan Mountains…they not really mountains…just some little hills that are considered officially to be part of Balkan Mountains. Sibiu or Hermanstadt is a Germanic city with a lot of German influence…as you enjoyed or started yourself…and people are very proud of HERMANSTADT…or SIBIU…Romanians from Sibiu are struggling to continue the German heritage of HERMANNSTADT by learning German or even celebrating German traditions …also preserved or presented here on RUclips…for example. I hope someday, the people that left for Germany during Ceaușescu regime,to return home in Hermannstadt
@@RomeoUrsu-fy9qo there are plenty of Balkan influences (note the Romanian shepherds practicing the ancient trade, they did not live within the city walls but outside of it and founded many villages). You also managed to misspell Hermannstadt twice in a comment, in two different manners :-) but you are right, the Germanic influence is very strong in this area, and the Balkan influence is diluted in comparison to other parts of the country.

It has a wierd schedule, but beside that, the food tastes extraordinary!
Are you 100% German? 🤨
Yes👍🏼
Mici are better in the south of romania (Oltenia)... the Transylvanian Mici tend to be dryer and blander... in the south they're better spiced and juicier
nice video, just one thing, Romania is not in the Balkans
Food looks great, but the prices are quite high
Yeah prices are fairly high, especially considering the average income in Romania. But the quality is also great, and we chose good restaurants
@@zingwibrothers Do you reckon Romania has so many tourists that restaurants can survive on their money only? If yes then indeed prices are too high for the average income in Romania. Just a thought :)
all good and stuff... but why are you keep refering to Romania as being in the Balkans? I just ask because Romania is not in the Balkans.
Can you guys stop referring to Romania as "balkans"? Sibiu is really a central european city. The arhitecture, the people, the culture got nothing to do with the Balkans. Us Romanians only consider the the southern part of the country as Balkan.
Oh we didnt know that, we thought the entire country is considered in the Balkan region
Sibiu has nothing Balkan inside…
A small area in RO has some hills that are considered part of Balkan Mountains…they not really mountains…just some little hills that are considered officially to be part of Balkan Mountains.
In Maramures you will find the best food from Romania. And stop calling us balkans..
Could you guys not show, at every given moment, your faces, big smiles and your teeth but just show to us the buildings and streets ? You are cute guys but we want to see the town and not your faces all the time. We want to just hear you but see this beautiful town.
Pe voi toate va surprind 🙄. Ati venit de pe marte?
Visit Andrew tates resident or the area Around it
Hahaha does he actually life here ?😆
@@zingwibrothers Yes he lives in Romania
@ he actually does live in bucharest
I wouldn't bother, giving more attention to an attention seeker is not healthy. Plus, you don't have to travel all the way there to see people like him, just go to any nightclub in your area. People who wear sunglasses in the dark abound
The mici are very different from restaurant to restaurant… my favorite food in Romania is the mici in Obor market in Bucharest.
