The 3rd Rail
Великобритания
Добавлен 31 окт 2020
I collect 80's Märklin H0 trains and build temporary layouts to run them. To make this interesting, I tend to try and use as many of the features offered by the Märklin system. I am not a modeller, more a bit of a mad scientist, so expect to see plenty of exposed wiring, wonky tracks and wobbly bits and pieces.
Trying out a few train looks for Märklin 3082 - DB BR41 (with a new smoke unit 🚂...)
I thought I’d dedicate some time to one of my favourite locomotives today, a Märklin 3082, a BR 41 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn that only rarely comes out. We’ll get it ready for the track, cover a bit of trivia and try and find suitable stock in the collection to run it with.
Thanks for watching!

The colourful "Mozart" service, from D 39 to EC 64, using 1980s Märklin models.
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Месяц назад
Mozart was the name given to a number of services that operated between Austria and France, via Munich, Augsburg, Stuttgart and Strasbourg. In 2023, Märklin released insider club models including a BR 181.2, that operated the train between Suttgart and Strasbourg from the 1970s onwards. Marklin didn’t do a 181 in the 1980s, the period of the Märklin production I collect, but on its own, the Moz...

If you are familiar with the channel, you often see my models in action, but you never see what happens once the fun is over. In my case, this involves a lot of packing, but also a few maintenance tasks I routinely perform at that stage, including taking care of probably the most neglected part of a model railway: the wheels of wagons and coaches. So, I shall share this bit of my routine today,...

This mini series is all about Märklin reversing units (aka reversing relay, "Umschaltrelais", "Umschalter", reverser, etc). Where they come from, where they go wrong and how to fix them. Reversing units are rock solid and best left alone. In 99.9% of cases they just work. This episode covers the remaining 0.1% of cases with adjustments, issues and fixes I regularly come across. From the vault... Märklin Austrian-themed export models from the 1980s

This is a re-upload with minor changes, let's see if it does better now ;) I received Märklin set 2843, an Austrian passenger train set a while back and I thought we should have a quick look at it. After years spent ignoring its non-German customers, Märklin ramped up the releases of international items in the 1980s, leading to a real explosion of choice in their ÖBB product line-up, so we'll t...

Märklin 1980s American models, a new arrival and a collection milestone...

In this instalment, I cover a mini collection milestone. I just received the last locomotive I needed to complete a part of the collection. I now own one example of every US themed model released by Märklin in the 1980s. Good excuse to take the entire American contingent out for a spin today, most of which I have never seen in action until now. So this is going to be a first for all of us. Enjo...

Habe die Lok, vor ein paar Tage gekauft, da ist noch der Originalpreise dran von 1983, es kam mal 339 DM, ist ganz schön teuer gewesen für die, und Ja es ist eine Sehr Schöne Lok 😊
looks like we agree 😉
ochsenlok in child mode - had a lot of fun watching it! 😄
glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the visit!
Bello il video 👍👍👍👍

Tolle Fahrimpressionen der Br41 von deiner Anlage. 👍👍
Thanks a lot!
It's incredible to see that last rounds at full speed without any derailments!
you have live dangerously sometimes... Keeps the heart pumping 😉
Part of the Einheitslokomotiven at the time. Still one of the most impressive German steam locos. With the Mannesmann wagons, the entire train does eye especially imposing. We have a few BR 41s on the layout. Digitized though but you have very much inspired us to go searching for those Mannesmann wagons hahah. Thank you for this delightful upload.
Happy hunting! Thanks for your time today!
Thumps up. 🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️😀👍👍
Thanks 👍
Very nice video. I love that BR41. I have got the same model but digitalized. I always enjoy watching your videos. Best regards from Germany. Frank
Thank you very much!
Stand me in the corner. For the past 60 years I have never worried or considered what my locos were pulling. My goal was to have as many engines and cars running at the same time as possible without crashing! My goal now is to purchase lots of vintage rolling stock, so that I can assemble proper groups of cars. I think I have more locomotives than cars! Winter is coming and so is my time downstairs in the train room! Thanks for the video.
I think you are not alone 😉 Thanks for the visit!
Im really sick but when i saw that you uploaded i got full of energy, you really make me happy :)
get well soon
Thanks for the video. Most enjoyable as usual. I have another idea for 'child mode' - we used to pull every carriage we had behind our F800. We had 10 passenger carriages of various types and about a dozen goods cars. It could pull them all with out a problem - even at slow speed. It might be interesting to see how many of your consists the 'Mikado' can pull up the ramp 🙂
that would be a way to have a bit a fun too
I thought about purchasing some Marklin stuff from a few places here in the US that sell the brand. Not going to lie I figured the prices here in the US would be more expensive for some reason that what I've actually seen.
certainly cheaper than new stuff in any case...
@@The3rdRail I honestly wouldn't know about that. I'm kinda new to the European brands in the model railroad hobby.
New mid range H0 Marklin/trix locomotives are about $400, with prices going up to $1500 or more, similar Roco/Piko start at around $200, with higher range models reaching $600 to $700... Starter sets and entry level stuff is comparable across brands.
Beautiful train
I agree 😀
Ex prussian compartment coaches

Kohlentender Lok.
"Schlepptenderlokomotive"
1988 was the official end of steam for the Reichsbahn however they still had occasional steam pulled commuter and freight until the end of the Reichsbahn itself in 1994, which is why there are so many eisenbahn museums in east germany.
indeed, thanks for sharing!
I love your channel! A very impressive collection.👍👍👍
Thank you very much!
That Fleischmann is beautiful😍. You can cut real glass for the windows. I am going to replace the windows on my rare 1/12th Markie living van as part of installing a full scaled interior.
Thanks for the visit!
I like both I run Trix and Fleischmann.
They are both pretty models.
This is a wonderful video. So thorough. I have hopes for fixing my grandson's crane with these instructions!
Have fun! There is an addendum in a later video as well, link in the pinned comment. Thanks for the visit.
Thank you for sharing your hobby with us. Watching and learning about it is very enjoyable. Everything is done well.
So nice of you, like, share and subscribe as they say, thanks for the visit.
Very informative as ever! in my opinion, the design of the french electric locomotives from the 1950s to the 1970s far surpassed that of the e.g. german engines of the same era - also in terms of color scheme! strangely enough, Paul Arzen's automotive designs don't look anything like his locomotives.
only a high level overview, glad it hit the mark... Thanks for the visit.
Excellent comparison! Did Fleischmann have a seperate brochure for AC models? I cannot remember that I ever noticed AC models in Fleischmann catalogues.
no, the AC models were lited in the main catalogue, either next to the DC model or on a dedicated page. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I have already seen several videos on your channel but I think in this one, the layout of the tracks can be seen best. I say it again, I love the super long bridge.
Thank you very much!
I have just discovered your channel and these 80's Märklin trains take me back to time when i played with my grandpa's Märklin trains. You received a extra subscriber! 😄
Welcome aboard!
I love your large bridge section! Probably you had to search for the segments over months until you could buy all of them.
I was lucky with that bit and managed to buy almost everything together from a shop.
Excellent in depth as always Interesting that the Dutch market was bigger than the French
Glad you enjoyed it
Very useful, thanks for posting
Mission accomplished! Like, share, subscribe as they say... Thanks for your time today.
Bello il video 👏👏👏
thanks!
Love this one! Amtrak did test one in America, but the stiff suspension did not work well with the low quality track at that time.
This is very generous of you, many thanks!
What a pleasure to see such a great collection in action. Thank you! Plus a fabulously illustrated documentation of the great role models! Bravo!
Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks!
Hello 😃 top video. Greetings Andreas
Danke! 🙏
Excellent! I grew up with the NS 1600 series and the 1200 series. The SNCF 72 series surely looksthe part! Interesting history to it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful. The Nez Cassé design does so distinctively stand out from all the rest. When growing up in the Netherlands, they were of course a very common sight and highly regarded. They just looked so majestic. A few in NL are still in use but not by the NS any-more. The most distinctive livery of them all came from Captrain. They painted one in French livery which does look fabulous. Pity that almost all of them have been scrapped, with just a few remaining in freight service and one sitting at the rail museum in Utrecht. Thank you so much for this fascinating upload.
Glad you enjoyed the video, Alsthom produced an important class for a quite a few countries indeed. Thanks for your time today.
Bravo pour la recherche d’info surle modèle réel ! Ça représente beaucoup de travail...
Merci! Bonne soirée.
Nice video as usual. Many, many thanks !
Glad you liked it.
Thanks!
You are too kind, many thanks
@@The3rdRail you put a lot of work into content we all enjoy.
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Great help, thanks. I got one with altered whires. Compare to runtime 6:46. Positions 1, 2, 9, 10 were not on the bus and 8 removed alltogether. My guess: last owner wanted to access locos and current from another angle ... try that with the newer models😂
yep lots of hacking potential...
Thank you for this great video. A pleasure, like always. I did not get this loco because it was never build, because it was era II (War) while my layout is era III and digital, so I got a Bavarian BR96 instead (also a Big Boy #4013 but never ran on the layout-(clearance problems) so the loco is still gorgeous but the wooden box while looking new developped a plastic insert decay (no elesticity anymore).
Glad you enjoyed the video. Early plastic packaging isn;t very resilient to age indeed. Until next time...
Wonderful and stunning!
🙏🙏 Like share and subscribe as they say... thanks for the visit!
This is so interesting and helpful, thank you. As a very wise old colleague of mine used to say, "If you haven't agonized over the solution, you don't understand the problem".
and i put my poor maths skills on full display in the process 😉... Thanks for the visit!
I am SO pleased to meet a site for Märklin railways that uses english! :-). I am new to HO Trix coming from Hornby, but I wondered if either of these two, manufacturers use a flywheel attached to their motors? Please forgive my lack of knowledge.
Welcome aboard! No flywheel on the models in this video. The situation is different with recent marklin models (2010 onwards...), I think anything above entry level fitted with a "can" motor today is likely to have one.
I was born and raised in Germany,my grandparents raised me,my grandfather started me with Fleischman, I'm 74 now and still have the locomotives and rolling stock and the faller houses, my layout is in a 10X16 room,in a kind of a way I wish that he would have decided on marklin, for one reason,no reverse loops, but I worked it out,but Fleischman or marklin both are good choices, the best thing about model trains is that it's all creativity and imagination and there is always something that can be added, I'm not a real stickler about actual rail lines, the way I look at it is to have fun and enjoying the hobby, when I work on my layout I totally shut out the craziness etc.of the outside world, it's a great way to spend a rainy day as well,so there it,so have lots of fun.
Right on! Rule 1 of model railways: they are your trains you do what you want with them. What matters is to enjoy them. Thanks for your time today!
The #1 rule of model railroading is: It's your layout, you can do what you like to do to have fun. The #2 rule is: if anyone disagrees, refer to rule #1.
Hello, I recently found your channel and have been thoroughly enjoying your productions. I am an American 2 rail modeler, however have always had a fascination with Märklin trains. The presentation of your videos is informative, and the tone is as if you are talking to an old friend. Looking forward to more!
