Märklin 1980s American models, a new arrival and a collection milestone...

  • In this instalment, I cover a mini collection milestone. I just received the last locomotive I needed to complete a part of the collection. I now own one example of every US themed model released by Märklin in the 1980s. Good excuse to take the entire American contingent out for a spin today, most of which I have never seen in action until now. So this is going to be a first for all of us.
    Enjoy!

    I am located in Northern Germany. I took my old Märklin collection out of the attic after many years in order to set up an analogue system in my craft room. In this context, I recently discovered your channel and must admit that I love your videos. Now I know how much I didn't know before. I learned a lot from you. The technical design of the videos, the quality of the recordings, the speed and length as well as your moderation: perfect!! Without you the Märklin world would be much poorer. My wife and I have been traveling in our camper for a week now. While she tried to read, I watched video after video. Although she's not actually interested in Märklin model railways, your friendly "Hello and welcome to the 3rd rail" makes her curious. Your pronunciation is so clear and distinct that listening is the best training for a non-English speaker. My wife now enjoys watching your videos as much as I do. Allow me to ask a question. I don't know anyone who knows the history of German railways as well as you do. I don't know if there are any model railway manufacturers with a focus on British railways (I hope they do exist). So why do you collect Märklin even though Märklin does not offer any British models? Doesn´t it bother you?
    We look forward to seeing many Märklin videos in the future. Many greetings from the Lüneburger Heide, Dirk (and Sybille)

      You are too kind, It is nice to hear that my voiceover is understandable, especially given I have a French accent. There are plenty of manufacturers of UK themed model railways: Hornby (the Märklin of the UK 🙂), Dapol, Accurascale, Rails of Sheffield, Heljan to name just a few... I am sure you will have heard of some of them. I collect Märklin because that is what I had as a child, if I had grown up in the UK, my choice would probably be different... Viel spaß in der Lüneburger Heide!

    Thanks for your video. I do like your layout. I am busy building a layout that this time is going to have no scenery, just a station, goods shed and engine shed. Like you have done, I don't want scenery to clutter up the layout and that never seems to come to completion. I want to focuss on running the trains. This is the best way to go, and your layout has inspired me to do so. Please keep your video's comming. Best wishes from Keith Heuer, Cape Town, South Africa.

    Interesting and humorous presentation again. Very nice collection of US material you have! And thanks for the Rivarossi hint.
    I really enjoyed the long colorful cargo trains, slowly pulled up the bridge by a couple of struggling F7 A units!!
    By the way, somehow, I think that the Märklin EMD-F7 has a more “bully” expression than Märklins Nohab’s, even though they were of the same DNA.
    I have also an F7 period now on my small layout. I found a couple of 3349’s which is two motorized A units separated by a B dummy. With two motors, this can go relatively slowly, as the trafo must be cranked up to “100” before it even starts moving.
    Happy easter holidays,
    Anders

    A staggering collection..., once again. You''re well in the process of actually having established a Märklin museum of the 1980s. Good heavens, what a treasure chest! The F7s are of course fascinating iconic when it comes to American railways. Fantastic to see them all on a day out. The livery of the Santa Fe actually is our favourite but that's a personal thing of course. Old tooling perhaps but they are more than solidly substantial to entice the imagination of the F7s profoundly. We did have a question about the B unit but you've actually answered that one in the end. Apparently M finally brought them out since the 1990s. Thank you so much for running and showing the F7s today 💓

    Nice model and walk-through of it and its compatriots! My nostalgia is that a Santa Fe Warbonnet F7 Super Chief (by the American company Tyco) was the loco int he first and only train set I had as a child- 1969. I was never into trains, until I rode them in Germany in my 40s and 50s. Then I got into them.

    You may save yourself some trouble next time these models are serviced. It is not necessary to remove either the front coupler or the pick-up ski to separate the body from the chassis. One need only loosen the screw in the fuel tank; the rear of the body can then be lifted and tilted to clear the coupler

    Excellent video as always. Comprehensive and just the right length.
    I was wondering if you may be able to assist: my 3084 BR50 and 3027 BR44 both have issues with their front bogie wheels sliding on occasion. I've oiled them and they revolve fairly freely, but it's like there's not enough down pressure.
    Now, I appreciate it's easy to adjust the light spring, but it's both locos and I was wondering if your examples display the same? It tends to happen more on curves.
    Always enjoying your channel :)

    • @The3rdRail
      @The3rdRail  4 месяца назад +1

      Thank you! For your wheels, unless the truck if fitted the wrond way round, the cause of sliding is usually that they aren't free enough. You mentioned "fairly freely" which doesn't sound the same as free 😉... You can try and squirt a bit of WD-40 on the axles bearings, dry things up and re apply a drop of oil, this usually fixes this type of things. If you still have the issue after that than indeed the spring would need adjusting. Thanks for the visit today.

    Hello Buddy, good question for you, The Dixie L&N gondola cars, are they painted brown? I am looking on eBay for one; what should I look for in terms of quality?

    • @The3rdRail
      @The3rdRail  4 месяца назад

      I think the plastic is brown, the inside is either grey or brown depending on the vintage. The earlier ones are grey. There is a little brake wheel on one end that is often broken, so this is something to watch out for if you care about these things.

    Great video. I have a question about the DB freight train at the start. Was it protoypical to have more than one wagon with brake huts running on German frieght trains of that era?

    • @The3rdRail
      @The3rdRail  4 месяца назад +1

      It is a DR train. Brakeman's cabins were widespread, there were over 120000 wagons built of the type you see in the video, and plenty more of other types, also with brakeman's cabins. Most were retrofitted with pneumatic braking systems starting in the 1930s I think, which made the cabin progressively redundant, but didn't mean these wagons couldn't still be used to transport freight, so you could have several of them within a consist. There were safety regulations that required someone to be present at the end of a freight train until the 1950s, so the cabin was used for this purpose. These wagons rprogressively disappeared until the late 50s/early 60s.
