USED IONIQ5 - GOING USED EV SERIES #usedioniq5
Hey and thanks for tuning in this week.
This week, I dive into my 'Going used' series, picking out great used EVs which at the time of publishing this video are priced perfectly for most consumers to indulge.
However, there's a lot of scepticism of the longevity of battery/motor technology and whether it can survive longer than we anticipate. In this 'Going Used' series, I intent to test these aging EVs and pick out any issues or point up where they're doing things right.
In this video I look at the Ioniq 5, Hyundai's first leap into 800v architecture and their first major ground up electric vehicle since the integration of an electronic drive chain in the Kona.
Specifically, after 2.5 years ...

How long will it take? How much will it cost? The MG4 SE SR is one of the most affordable EV you can buy in the UK with a decent useable daily range. However, as I've proved on my 70mph range test, this vehicle is l...

Hey and thanks for tuning in this week. In November 2022 I performed a 70mph range test with my MG4 SE Standard Range. Recently, I also range tested the MG4 Trophy Long Range in the warmer British summer climate and compare both the tests. I felt that it would only be fair to compare the two like for like with similar route and outdoor temperature. Although not scientific, it's a great insight ...

MG4 December Efficiency Test | MG4 vs Tesla M3 LR
Just come across this excellent video Stuart and was wondering if you had to do anything regarding deflecting the headlight beams while driving in France in the dark?
for me it looks like toyota I don't know why
Nice video but think you can control charge to 80% using overnight charge timer. The lg chem batteries seem really good but motor bearings need changing every 100,000 miles but like doing a clutch on a fossil.I have got 260miles range on a trip to London due to it not having a permanent magnet motor. Also it's heat pump tech is really good on such a cheap car and means you can get to work on cold days without losing much range.I see 170miles in winter around town going to 220miles on long journeys and 260 in summer
This video is absolutely outstanding, I really hope you're monetising it Stuart! I have the MG4, took delivery Sept 2023 so had it 15 months now and done 32,000 miles. I've comfortably done 1200 mile round trips in it (family holiday to Scotland) and drive UK wide for work. I have 2 kids (3 and 7) and it's a great family car. I really love the drive of the car, but unfortunately have had a diabolical dealership experience and multiple issues on the car. If the dealership had dealt with it well I'd be waxing lyrical about the MG4, as it stands, I will be getting rid and going with something else next year. I'm interested in what you said about the Tesla, before Elon started sticking his nose in UK politics the Model 3 was likely my next choice. I'll check out your other videos when researching next options!
I managed to do 340km Mladenovac (Sebia) to Craiova (Romania) in my ZE40. Average speed was 58km/h, as there was only just 30km of motorway.
how fast is usb c charging in the car? w?
Why do you range test on motorway? Everyone knows that electric cars don't like motorway ! When I drive on motorway with my electric car i sit a 60mph, electric cars do best off motorways!
I’ve had mine 14months now, 20000km driving in country NSW(Australia). Best car I’ve had and I’ve been driving on farms and country roads for 60 years.
Tesla has really up'ed its game with the new model 3 highland which has 33% longer highway range with the same battery
Interesting. Not for me but interesting.
Hi, I also got a MG4 after watching all of the videos on RUclips about this car lol. I got the 64kWh version standard trim, done 5k kilometers in it already and I must say this is so darn better than anything else in this price range, the other cars were the Dacia Spring and Citroen eC3, so not much competition, the MG4 won easily lol. It's a great car overall, but I hope they will add driving setup memory and radio auto turn on and off after opening the doors... they are the only downsides
Need some lube on the ball joints?
Hey Stuart thank you for the great videos! I would like to ask, do you face any connecting issues? Since i asked the seller, they told me that I need to unplug and plug it again whenever i turn on my mg 4 ev. If yes, how you solve this issue? Thank you in Advance
Also if your speeds are higher then 70mph at most times you’ll get lesser range. If speeds like 80, 90mph you’ll definitely eat up more range when traveling at higher speeds I do luv my 2023 ionic 5 dual motor because it saves a lot of money then buying expensive fuel or consistent maintenance on regular gas car👏🏾👍🏽
Because a lot has to do with outside temperatures Always know cold weather temperatures effect batteries which means in cold weather conditions you get shorter range. So instead of getting 300 miles on a single charge you’ll get around 250 or 260 miles.
My one software upgrade wish it that when using android Auto maps. I wish you could press the heater button with out it changing the screen
MG4 51kWh speed 88kW 64kWh speed 140kW 77kWh speed 144kW
Haven't heard of sports ioniq 5 N In Kyiv, there is only one in the car dealership, Edem Auto.
Thanks for these videos. I now live in SW France where the average temperatures are higher for longer and the majority of A & B roads are 70-90km/hr max (45-55mph). I'd say that was perfection for EV efficiency. I think the Standard range, with its LFP battery is perfect. I can plug it in at home, charge off my Solar panels to 100% every day, and have (possibly) 320km range waiting for me every morning. A bigger range is always nice, but I rarely drive more than a couple of hours without a break, and that's a rare distance for me anyway. Cheers. The "No-Deposit Lease" in France is €249 a month for 4 years. That's €12,000 for a 4 year "rental" or £10k. That's cheaper than the depreciation on a new car over 4 years ... my mind is made up. Cheers.
Why on earth did you book hotel without a charger? We do that sort of thing only if there’s no other choice
Well, frankly it didn't convince me one iota. Having to obsess about charging, being obliged to stay in cheesy hotels, eat in cheesy restaurants, hanging about in motorway services, taking a year and a day to do a simple trip??? As Mrs Thatcher once famously said, "no, no, no". Why were you anxious to minimise your use of French charging stations? Apparently they're better equipped than the U.K. ones. Did you drive at the legal motorway speed limit in France which is 130 kph or ± 80 mph? I didn't see that at any time. Let's face it EVs, given the current state of the technology/infrastructure, are for journeys to and from home, making use of a home charger, end of. I don't doubt they are the future, just not at present.
No l have new id3 58kw battery got 220 on full charge on cold winter day
In Dec 2024 today I have just charged up to 86% from 22% overnight on Octopus Go @8.5p =£3.64 have a range of 152 miles on my MG4 Se I have a big diesel as the spare car and all I have done in a month is turned it on Since 2017 I have used a public charger once One of the biggest savings isn’t the fuel costs but the wife shopping in expensive forecourts I reckon that’s at least £250 a month saved
maybe you can check hyundai kona 64kwh prelift or after lift and check degradation?
Seems about right, I have never got close to 4miles/kw unless in urban driving stopping and starting a lot using regen braking
Watching this in Dec 2024 and about to hand back my EX40, I have to say, even in the Trophy spec, there’s very little available at that price point with the same kit (that I can find anyway!)
The spec sheet for the excite 51 MG4 states 88kW as the maximum charging rate, so your original spec sheet had a typo, simple.
My MG4 was made with no seam sealer in the rear on the vehicle, seriously. Its leaks and stinks and feels like a 20 year old car. MG know they did not make some of the cars with seam sealer but ignored the problem until we all came back complaining our cars stink. I would not recommend an MG4.
Ha Ha Ha !!!!! Do the nation a favour pal & come back in about 3 years time & tell us again....!
Just FYI - the tapes that were recorded on routine flights, (usually in Russian), were sent for transcription and analysis to Ops (EW), which was a small unit at RAF Wyton, the same station that 51 Sqn was originally based at.
Hi what model is the box
I see more and more of these are suffering from motor bearing failures past 70K ish miles
The ECO mode and Level 3 Regen hampered the range.
I think its a question of when you are willing to step into a generation of EV technology and at what price above £15k i would say no below then it could make a good additional family vehicle if you have home charging, i dont think it will be good for high mileage long term ownership due to questionable Renault reliability and durability ive had a couple of Renaults and they judt seemed to get a bit leggy and start costing a lot to keep tip top, there are aldo reports of motor bearing failure around 100k miles and air con and electricalcharging issues. But st thevright price at low mileage with a good battery SOH they could be very serviceable but it wouldnt be the chice for a 400 mile holiday journey prefer IC for that.
Very cool. Love that it covers the lip on the rim that gets rashed so easily.
I have an MG5 LR trophy, which we have had a couple of weeks and done just over 1000 miles. not sure if running in is a thing on an EV, but maybe bearings loosen up tyres etc and battery equalisation, but the range has improved. it's been very cold 0-5 deg and i just did almost the exact same m4 journey as you from South Wales and not going much over 60-65 for 4.4 kw/mile. re charged at an instavolt nr Swindon and was shocked at the speed on a 160 kw charger. was full before i finished my coffee. loving the car so far.
3:05 I've got a question, when I plug my charger in, it shows the yellow exclamation mark triangle as well next to the parking brake symbol, is that normal? I didn't actually use the charger because I'm worried there's something wrong. That exclamation mark triangle comes up everytime.
I think the car looks good! Huge criteria for me is does it fit 2 medium size dogs in the boot. The Kia has a bigger boot on paper, but I think it's just a bit wider and the MG is a bit taller. How do they even measure those? :D
What's the depreciation on this car in a year?
Interesting, get much more range in a warmer climate.
So it's a genuine 200 mile car, even in terrible conditions.
Great information. Good to see actual Road tests. Thanks
that speedo is shockingly awful
Bought the Zoe GT LINE for £15k at two years old 9.5k miles "& free 7kw wall box fitted. It's been brilliant very under valued. It's my third EV SINCE 2014. It just might be my last car ever at 68 years old.
Can you use Tesla superchargers to charge the MG4?
Yes, but they are (here in Australia) charging stations that have been funded in part by local councils.
It is not more efficient than my ID3
I wouldn’t dream of buying a new MG4 when I know I could buy a low mileage Tesla model 3 ,which is a far better car in every way,for a much cheaper price. (No,I’m not a Tesla/Musk fan boy,I’m just being pragmatic.)
I'm getting the same car soon. Looking forward 😊
Latest research say charge to full only once per month and at all other times to 80% for LFP batteries.
You don't need to service a Tesla but the Mg does look nice
