I just did my first 100km with my standard. And it really let my have a constant grin while driving. Thanks for your entertaining and informing videos.
I,m glad you mentioned the absolutely awful and dangerous lane assist. I have a Trophy and it's the only thing that lets it down.........very badly. I even contacted the garage whom I bought it from and they seemed to think there was nothing wrong with it. What planet are they living on.
I totally agree about Lane Assist. I've never driven any car that it works properly on so, like you, it's the first thing I I turn off. Also with you on the Pan Roof. When I looked at an MG4 in a well lit showroom the dark interior was the first thing I noticed. Could easily be solved with a lighter headlining material or or a pan roof which is I believe available on the 4 in some other markets.
Just a quick update, received the car a week ago and it does indeed have the rear wiper and headrest but also the best upgrade they have put in is one pedal driving :), really happy with that.
Hi Stuart, greetings from Ireland. Your videos are very useful, thank you. Got my standard MG4 mid July and have done 6500km in it in 9 weeks. I love it. I drive a round trip of 145km 4 times a week. I`ve only seen a few others on the road here, so it has got a lot of looks! I didn`t need the longer range as how often do we really drive 300km in a day but I have done a couple of longer journeys and it was no issue to stop and charge. I do agree on the lane assist, it`s awful and I switch it off every time. I am still grappling with timing the charger to come on. I set the MG app, then plug in for cheaper night time charging to kick in, but I never seem to get it right first time, sometimes the charging kicks in straight away, so I reset, maybe even twice and then it works - can never figure out what I am doing wrong. Also changed my phone recently, from a Samsung A14 - which worked perfectly with the infotainment, I could control my spotify, view google maps satnav and have whatsapp messages read out to me and I could speak replies back - now I have a Samsung A15 and no amount of jiggery pokery will make it work with the car, I know it is most likely a phone issue but so frustrating!
Regarding no rear wiper, does frost slide off the rear window easily once the HRW melts it or do you still have to scrape it ? Also what is the car like for misting up on damp days, does it clear quickly with the front and rear demisters on ?
Left Lane Driving looks so skechy, when used to Right side driving😆, my head saying all the time Wrong Wrong Wrong. Great Video, greatings from Germany.
LKA is dreadful, I always disable it too. Charging speeds on the LR Trophy are 6.6 Single phase AC, 9.8kW three phase AC and 142 kW DC rapid, as reported by the app. Kind of annoyed about the Ohme pro not being three phase but then again, neither is my house, so I need to be careful during weekends to not need more than 65% daily. Love your videos, been watching them since you got your MG and it's one of the reasons why I went for mine. I've not yet tried the V2L but knowing that people like you did and it works makes me consider it in the summer for a picnic.
I love my Hyundai Tucson PHEV but I always turn off the Lane keep Assist before I drive. It is a good idea I suppose but very off-putting when driving at 70 on a motorway and it suddenly kicks the steering one way or the other when you are not expecting it
LKA works fine in every car I’ve ever had it on….except in my mg, how this car got an ncap five star rating is unbelievable. Honest review , as with a lot of owners you e had issues, you mention that the lack of a wiper isn’t an issue…yet you’ve removed a rear head restraint…..😮
Hi, Syuart Like many models sunroof is missing, my other point to raise is, the videos on MG4 have not seen any explaining the touchscreen settings, models I have looked at say it takes too long to load and is not very good when on the vehicle is driving along, my point, does the system allow to have updates, to sort things out, I am sure many viewers would agree. Regards welshman2081
Thanks for the questions. The car does receive updates but they’re currently only via dealership at this time. In terms of laggy infotainment, it’s hit and miss. For me, most of the time it’s totally fine but other times a second or two behind. Having said that many infotainment systems in EVs I’ve tested are the same. Benchmark is Tesla. It’s a 26k car so there’s expectations at this price point.
Hey Stuart, I just ordered a new MG 4 yesterday from MG Dublin, it’s the middle spec version called the Excite long range here, the sales guy told me that mine has a rear wiper fitted and they also added a small head rest for the rear middle passenger, would have preferred a rear light to be honest, they are getting there 😅
That’s really interesting and congrats on your order. I have seen a couple of photos from a Chinese car show and it did indeed have a wiper on the rear window. I don’t think it would hurt to add these functions and of course an interior rear cabin light.
Screen reflections. Do you suffer any loss of visual information from the two dashboard screens during use, due to light or screen reflections? Do you know if a sunroof as an aftermarket fit is possible with the MG4?
Seems like many of the things designed to make life easier/safer actually have the opposite effect. I wouldn’t consider ownership until it’s possible to turn some things off permanently, without the need to reset for every journey.
The MG4 is about to start coming into dealerships in Oz... and I'm looking forward to going to have a poke around. One thing I can't find detail on is, does the ECO mode give any benefit to range etc? Thanks also for great content.
Eco mode is good for people who haven't had an EV before or know how to drive efficiently if needed. All eco.mode does Is reduce the effectiveness of the heating or Cooling and dulls the accelerator so you need to use more of it to get the same acceleration. Eco mode does nothing that you can't achieve yourself.
I was wondering if you could record the air conditioning pump at various loads/temps of operation? I've got a Trophy and its been great so far but the AC pump is really noisy and is making a metallic clicking sound in operation which I can hear whilst in the car, there seem to be a few cars around like this and I'm currently battling with the dealer to try and demonstrate it's not meant to do it.
Please i need help, with something small but i wander if its possible, my tyre pressure is set for Kpa. but i really want it to show pressure in BAR instate. but have not been able to find that setup
Thanks for your videos on this car. We test drove an MG4 standard range at the weekend. Very impressed, will be buying a Trophy spec car in a few months. I turned the LKA off as it was a bit annoying, but then again I switch it off in our Golf! The sales chap said MG had done a software update to make it less aggressive?
Thanks v.much for the feedback. Believe or not I’ve tested a few EVs in the past few weeks also with LKA and the behaviour of each including MG4 isn’t that different as I’m sure your Golf is too. The main take is it will be refined in a car which gets software updates and of course it can be also switched off. Mine is going into MG tomorrow for it’s warranty repairs, I’m asking if they can check for software updates but mine is an SE and the model which has been most impacted with LKA issues is the Trophy as it has more features. That said, many I have heard from on FB with the latest update doesn’t seem to be suffering with any issus
Thanks for your Content. I also own a MG4 SE for around 1 Month now and iam really Happy. In contrast i drive daily an VW ID.4 for Business and what me bothers me the most is the Cruise-Control/Speed-limiter/TJA System of the MG4. the ID-System is brilliant but MG does something wrong here. I noticed that, when your steer for more than some Degrees, the Car lets of the Gas. that´s pretty annoying. Did you noticed this also?
Mine does that as well, though I can't quite figure out if it's intended for safety or just poor speed control for the ACC. I'll complain about it to my dealers' on the next visit.
Is it possible to turn on the heating or cooling remotely (100 meters) via the iSMART application on the SE model since they do not have a 4G connection?
@stuart_thomas: Thank you for sharing these MG4 informative videos. I'm planning to buy the Trophy version. Could you please let me know about annual maintenance and service plan cost and what it covers?
Thanks for the lovely comments. Service costs differ from dealer to dealership but the MG website can give you some accurate figures. For memory it’s around £150. In terms of annual maintenance it’s just air for tyres and washer fluid. The service takes care of the rest.
I think I saw once that some models have a 3 pin standard electric socket hidden under the rear seat, in the middle, where the transmission tunnel would normally be. Does your standard model have one also?
Thanks Toby, it has its moments where it doesn’t respond instantly. Although having spent a lot of time in EVs like Ioniq 5, Kona, Niro EV and ID.4 I’d say they’re all on par
Great video. Nice to see something new on The MG4 rather than just reviews. I’m due to take collection of my MG4 in a June. I wonder if you could say more on the manufacturer defects? It’s my first time buying new and want to know what to look out for.
Good question Anthony. I’ve had my MG4 since March and have not had any issues other than the few mentioned in the video. No oil leak noted. Overall a great experience so far.
On 2023 builds, the transfer box oil leak and undertray bulge seem to have pretty much gone away. Some people question the seat fabric quality but I've had no issues in mine.
It does have a ceiling with bass, but I’m fine with it and I love my music up loud. Speakers only in the front in the SE spec but my passengers haven’t ever complained 👍
Hey Stuart. Thanks for your reviews of the MG4 in general. You have a standard range. 2 Questions I have : what made you decide on the standard range and 2 - do you regret not having the extra 100km /60 miles extra range from the Long range? I'm debating and going back & forth between Standard and Long range... I can't make up my mind and your input will be valuable. Thank you for your time.
Hi 👋 and thanks for the comment. For me, It all comes down to use case and £. Longest journey I do on a regularly basis is 60 miles (daily) and I can charge at home. It’s hard to justify the extra cost. Performance and efficiency is pretty much the same. Having said that, being able to charge to 100% on a daily basis is a bonus with the std range and when I have done longer journeys (on many occasions) the car range isn’t an issue, charging behaviour makes up the shortfall. I’m travelling to Paris in it soon, I have no range anxiety. I’ve been fortunate to live with a trophy model as well recently and for me, it didn’t add any value to my use case nor comfort. I do understand that having an extra 40-60 miles available is important to many and of course the higher charging speeds if you public DC charge a lot might be a big bonus. I hope this helps?
@@stuart_thomas many thanks. It helps a lot. I also spoke to a friend with a BMW i3 (way shorter range than the MG4 with 99 miles range) and he said to me "do you buy a car that suits the 98% of journeys you make, or a car that's able to do the other 2%. For me, with the 2%, I just add an hour travel time and stop at rapid chargers for a fast top up - it's just a matter of getting organised better + the extra money you saved you can spend it on something else " he's right and I think it really ties up nicely to your point: it's hard to justify the extra cost when I do less than 170 mils weekly + i can charge at work & at home. At the time of this comment, I have placed an order for a Standard range ! delivery in 3 weeks. I'm so excited. thx mate !
Hi - I have a Trophy, and this only has a 7kw on board charger..... Also Saic have said they plan a Auto Pilot update by the end of this year.....watch this space.....
I've just had the latest LKA and Collision Avoidance software updates and the car is vastly improved to the point that I haven't felt the need to turn anything off since the update.
Hi Mark, how were you informed that a software update was available? Did you get the upgrade done by your dealer? Was there a cost involved? Thanks, Mark S.
@@bretagnemaison5455 someone on one of the MG forums mentioned that there might be an update specifically for LKA and Collision Avoidance so I called me dealer and asked them to check for me. 2 days later I got a call inviting me in. As mentioned before, I already had the latest base software version at R16. The additional updates need to be done in ready mode rather than ignition mode otherwise the safety sensor camera doesn't get included in the update which then causes conflicts once it is done and the system reboots. The only thing I now turn off is the audible warning.
At this point in my ownership if I could add one feature it would be to have an automatic windscreen wiper. Now it's possible the Trophy model has it but my SE LR doesn't, which I find odd given that the headlights are all automatic, which I find a great feature, in particular the switch of high beams. My old Prius has this feature and it's quite handy for managing rain volume without having to worry about how to manually dial in your wipers. First world problems I know but hey...
I would have to agree, surprised this is not included. I'm interested to know how often you've had to use public charging stations with your SE LR. I've had mine for a couple of months and always get home with charge to spare. I do a regular trip to Guildford and that is a 220 mile round trip journey for me, and as long as you are sensible with the speed the MG4 does it no problem. I don't even carry cables in the car anymore and only charge at home, just wondered if you had similar experience with range?
@@squareeyz Hi Craig, I've only had the car for a month and a half, so far I've been charging at work where it's free for me to charge and it seems I can get by without charging for about 2 weeks if I don't do long journeys. I'd have to agree 220 miles should be enough, when I charge it full it gives me a range estimate of about 266 miles. Its first outing was a road trip to the Isle of Skye and that was a bit of a stressful experience, mostly due to rapid chargers only working 1/3 of the time. We're going to Fully Charge Live North next week, it'll be interesting to see how well the journey between Edinburgh and Harrogate goes
The best feature are the missing features ... manual doors, manual charging port opener, manual mirror folding (on SE), manual boot lid, no super computer with 24h surveillance cams. It makes the car more grounded and simple. This car actually made me buy an EV. It's light in comparison and build for drivers, not gamers or entertainment junkies to a very tempting price :) It's a car with character and reminds me on cars like the Alfa Romeo 147 GTA... not perfect but fun in every aspect.
@@solos-g1j Actually I can't complain about the line assist in my SE LR one. The sensitivity is set to low (which) is persistently saved and it's fine for me. TJA is working kinda bad, but I have set my MG pilot to ACC (adaptive cruise control without line assist) and this is also fine for me.
Great question. It would really depend on use case. If I was doing a lot of miles I’d take a new model 3 for the supercharger network and accurate route planning/range. If this isn’t important I’d order the new MG4 X-power which has all the best MG4 bits, pano roof and 450bhp dual motor which is still less than a model 3 SR. I hope this helps?
Mine works OK ... as long as the car is not "plugged in but not charging". (Not plugged in, or plugged in and charging then the preconditioning works fine).
I suspect that the issues with poor Lane Assist are not correctable by software updates. It is possibly down to poor cameras so the car struggles to see the road lines. One feature that I find essential is a rear camera for reversing. Where I live (in Queensland) most cars are huge SUVs and 4x4s and when you are parked next to them exiting parking spaces is impossible without either a wide angle rear camera or someone assisting you externally because you have zero visibility. I actually think I will have to avoid this car just for that reason.
Software will deal with lane assist. If I’m honest, having driven Ioniq 5, Kia e-niro, Kona and ID4, their LKA is identical I’d go as far to say Ioniq 5 is more aggressive. A lot of people jumping into MG4 are first time EV buyers and this has a lot to do with it, it’s new to them. I’ve just done a 70mph motorway range test with MG4 trophy and it behaved really well. The camera suite isn’t amazing on this car, it does a job but I find with the exception of Tesla that picture quality is not good enough, but the 360 aspect is helpful. I find the sensors really good though.
My dealership offered a service agreement for 3 and 5 years. Is this something that is worth paying for? It is to cover the yearly maintenance and MOTs . £170+ /year (about).
I paid £399 for 3 years servicing plus first MOT, up-front when buying the car. The fact that this renews MG Assist after each service makes it much better value - without this then EV servicing costs are stupid.
Sun roof adds cost and weight so on more expensive cars might be included. Charging speed pretty poor for a modern EV but 50 kwh battery a good size. Does it charger slower as it is an LFP battery ? Sorry that you have had so many recall issues and warranty replacement dash will take days to fit (hope they don't damage wiring behind dash like they did on my mates Ford).
I would agree 10 years ago because of the mechanical advances of ice engines. However, software can change things overnight. The acceleration of EVs and the envelope of design would mean every generation would probably have a new set of problems.
The lane assist issue is the most frequent piece of negative feedback I've seen about this car. I hope they notice and allow users to turn it off permanently.
That will never happen. NCAP demands default on for LKA systems on all cars wishing to achieve the 5* rating. Yet oddly, still allows it to be turned off at will, it just defaults to on at the next switch on.
My SE standard range was already at R16 software but I asked my dealer if there were any additional updates to stop the lake keep assist and collision avoidance from being so aggressive. It went in to the dealer last Tuesday for additional updates and I can now say that they are both vastly improved. So much so that I haven't bothered turning them off since. Apparently the previous problems were because updates were being carried out in ignition mode which left the front camera sensor out of the loop. This meant that the camera would fight against what the software was trying to do. They now carry out updates in "ready" mode which includes camera so that it doesn't fight the software.
It’s not been a problem on my MG4 SE Long Range. I’ve left it on since I took ownership and it’s been fine, assisting lightly when necessary. Perhaps those cars facing issues need the latest LKA update.
@@CastleKnight7 Even if what you say is true, I still think my point stands. The fact that your settings reset every time you leave your car is needlessly annoying.
@@manthe3711Unfortunately, due to Euro NCAP regulations and ratings, LKA is required to be on every time you get in your car. But I agree, it would be convenient if the car would remember all your settings and keep them that way.
UK spec for the SE SR says 117kW maximum DC charge rate (not 85kW), so 88kW is way off the maximum. I've not DC charged my SE SR from a low SoC so I've not even achieved 80+kW as yet, but I'm sure it'll be similar to yours. 🙂
Thanks Ian, I agree that the literature says 117kW however, this is impossible to reach as I've thoroughly tested all methods and made a video on it. Many people have messaged me to say in Europe that this figure has changed at dealership level to 85kW which I'd agree is achievable. I'll be the first to make a video on it if this changes. Thanks for tuning in!
I've had the phantom braking issue once in my SR LR. It was a potentially dangerous situation, where I would have been hit in a back if a car had been following me. I now always switch off front collision assist, as well as LKA. Strange how safety features are permitted to make driving more dangerous.
Yes agree , and those unreliable 'safety' features should at least be able to be turned off permanently. If they are there complying with EU rules We users should lobby the EU to be allowed to permanently turn them off.
Hi guys. About to order MG4 SE LR. Are we saying if you disable the Front Collision Assist feature then you’ll never be subjected to the phantom braking issue?
@@BryanEderyMusic that's right Bryan. I only experienced the issue once anyway (on a sharp bend with oncoming traffic and slow speed). It's not just a mg issue, vws and teslas also very occasionally have the issue.
Forgive me please Stuart but my comment relates to my ZSEV not an MG4 - hope that's OK? I've had my MG about 20 months and 17500 kms now. 3 months ago I did a stupid thing and broke the front grill which stopped it being able to be charged. I had it sent down to the Limoges MG dealer who supplied the car. It has been there 3 months now and for some reason no longer has ANY brakes !!! The dealer has contacted the sole MG TECH expert based in Paris for a solution with no replies yet. It seems to be a software problem. I share this with your readers so they can make enquiries about buying MG cars servicing BEFORE they buy.
Ask your dealer about the latest LKA and Collision Avoidance updates in ready mode rather than ignition mode. Ready mode makes sure the camera sensor is included so that it doesn't fight against the software update.
I just did my first 100km with my standard. And it really let my have a constant grin while driving. Thanks for your entertaining and informing videos.

Hi Thomas
Why is it not stay in ECO mode all the time. Going back normal mode
Heard comment about rear wiper and reversing and confused why do you -need- a rear wiper when the reversing sensors are more that adequate ?.
Because when you’re not reversing , to drive normally with.
Regarding the mg4 phone app. Is there a maximum distance where you can be away from the car to monitor it's charging through the app.?
Regarding no rear wiper, does frost slide off the rear window easily once the HRW melts it or do you still have to scrape it ? Also what is the car like for misting up on damp days, does it clear quickly with the front and rear demisters on ?
Frost does fall off using preconditioning. I’ve never experienced any issues with misting up in the cabin.

I don’t believe any MG models have a 3-pin 240v socket
@@stuart_thomas May have been a China only version or something.
I drive a mg ehs in Australia (called hs phev here) . I find the infotainment very laggy , does the mg4 have this issue too ? Thanks
Mine has 2. Undertray which is deformed and a dashboard with bubbles in it. Both are being replaced under warranty in June 👍
My Cupra doesn't have any battery drain even over 3 weeks.
Does it come with a type 2 charging cable?
I can't find 'Hi MG' voice command 😮 in the SE model. Is this only available for trophy?
Great video again Stuart, can I ask why there is no central rear headrest for this car?
Originally it doesn’t come with one however, new trophy models will come with one. I have seen some photos and it destroys all visibility

Hey! How is the sound system on the Standard Range MG4?
It does have a ceiling with bass, but I’m fine with it and I love my music up loud. Speakers only in the front in the SE spec but my passengers haven’t ever complained 👍
@@stuart_thomasI drive alone most of the time tbf so the lack of an extra phone charger port, head rest, overhead light , is not a prob..
What makes you think you only have 7kw on your trophy, specs say LR and trophy have 11kw
I've just had the latest LKA and Collision Avoidance software updates and the car is vastly improved to the point that I haven't felt the need to turn anything off since the update.
@@markmueller8099 Which version do,yours report and are those individual updates ?
Hi I have a Trophy and no Auto wipers. I found this strange as well
I would have to agree, surprised this is not included.
How hard is it to reach a finger round to operate the wipers 😂
@@richardhowlett9424 It's not hard, but as I said, first world problems ;)
The best feature are the missing features ... manual doors, manual charging port opener, manual mirror folding (on SE), manual boot lid, no super computer with 24h surveillance cams. It makes the car more grounded and simple. This car actually made me buy an EV. It's light in comparison and build for drivers, not gamers or entertainment junkies to a very tempting price :)
It's a car with character and reminds me on cars like the Alfa Romeo 147 GTA... not perfect but fun in every aspect.
I like mine too , but .. the stupid allways on lane assist when you start is a mistake :( and why not standard in Eco drive ???
@@solos-g1j Actually I can't complain about the line assist in my SE LR one. The sensitivity is set to low (which) is persistently saved and it's fine for me. TJA is working kinda bad, but I have set my MG pilot to ACC (adaptive cruise control without line assist) and this is also fine for me.
Which would you prefer, the mg4 or tesla model 3 sr? I'm looking to sell my tesla and I'm not sure what to get!
Is the phone app working to precondition the car still waiting on delivery in Ireland thinking of a used model 3 instead
Mine works OK ... as long as the car is not "plugged in but not charging". (Not plugged in, or plugged in and charging then the preconditioning works fine).
It works as long as the vehicle isn’t plugged in
Hi..is the MG4 battery liquid cooled?
Yes
@@stuart_thomas thanks..kudos to your vids!
What type and size alloys wheels, they look great
They are plastic aero covers over proper 17" alloys. Quite a few EVe including Tesla use plastic aero trims.
Increases airflow and is a good thing lol 🤷♀️
One question.
At the current time, what are the latest software versions, and how do you display your cars versions?
SE is R16 and Trophy is R34. It can be seen in the setting menu under system.
@@markmueller8099 thanks for the information.
BTW I enjoy your videos! Thanks.
Did I miss the range and miles per kw?
My dealership offered a service agreement for 3 and 5 years. Is this something that is worth paying for? It is to cover the yearly maintenance and MOTs . £170+ /year (about).
I paid £399 for 3 years servicing plus first MOT, up-front when buying the car. The fact that this renews MG Assist after each service makes it much better value - without this then EV servicing costs are stupid.
@@InBodWeTrust Thank you for the quick reply!
It's also worth noting that you get full AA cover for every year you have the MG maintenance plan.
@@markmueller8099 Thank you very much Mark. It does sound like a good deal.
LFP does charge slower as the cells are lower voltage but the curve for 10-80% is reasonably good
Can u just ask how long did delivery take
Seems to differ from dealership to dealership. My local was a few weeks.
How do I get Hello MG to work
Nice video!
I always feel getting the first gen of a new cars is never that wise, get it the year or two years later then they usually fix all the issues.
Mine is trophy and I can’t find out how to work Hello MG
Who won the give away ?

I hope MG can sort it soon for you
CAn you help us with the contact info for the Paris Tech expert ? Ciao, Bart ( a dutchman in Belgium) MG4 Std
LKA is suicidal
Ask your dealer about the latest LKA and Collision Avoidance updates in ready mode rather than ignition mode. Ready mode makes sure the camera sensor is included so that it doesn't fight against the software update.
Are you Dutch Paul ? if so which dealer knows about this ? Ciao Bart (a dutchman in Belgium)
