I've been following MG4 since the beginning and it's just interesting - the software programmers implement the changes the customers want, which is great, but then it just stalls somewhere along the way between MG and the customer. The services aren't motivated to do all the unit updates correctly and then the user experience is just completely different. Which is a huge shame. The software update discussion forum alone has over 180 pages, it's obvious that owners are very interested in this.
Price has a lot to do with it, it is not an expensive EV but has some sophisticated engineering and features... it is not a Tesla and is trying to compete, so there is cost saving in the backend.
They have so many different software forks running for different markets. It boggles the mind, also because of different regulations like safety assists for Euro NCAP. In Thailand they have a completely different screen, software and OTA updates. Quite bad of SAIC-MG to fragment the software development so much.
I agree, regular updates are important to me too, which is one big reason I traded in my e-C4 for another car. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that MG4 OTA will work, but I don't really believe it anymore, too many different controllers...
I´ve got a german MG4 Luxury ( built in june 2023 ), infotainmentsoftware is R46. Almost all of the problems you ment to be solved with R56 were solved by my service center after I complained about some of the problems one week after getting the car. They had the car for more than one day and installed several updates ( but infotainment is, as mentioned, still R46. R59 is not available in Germany so far ) BTW: I don´t have bluetooth problems as well ;) A "must have" feature would the ability that the car stores the last settings, as driving mode, recuperation and other settings
Providing the update tools to the community to use at their own risk would be an excellent move for SAIC. I would definitely give it a try myself! I doupt it is in their DNA though…
I don't yet have the R59 update given that R46 seems stable enough for the time being, but the other updates you mentioned, like the 1mph increment for cruise control, the ACC/TJA switch with the long press of the MG pilot button, auto headlights improvements, BT issues sorting or not slowing down in bends with ACC on, I had them done during my latest visit to the dealers in April. The LKA disablement would be a good addition but I have my pre-flight checks as a habit before taking off, so not much of a problem anymore. On the ACC performance in reference to distance versus the objects in front, I agree, it's average at best, brakes seem overreactive and if I were to plot the speed during ACC, it would be accelerate-panic break-accelerate-panic break-repeat. I usually modulate this by changing the distance and intervening quite often in sub 30mph events but I guess after 20k miles, I got used to it implicitly. One thing that people still complain about is the hotspot (I don't use it so I couldn't comment on this yet!) and this means there will be another update coming (R68 or 69, can't remember now) PS: Good to see videos from you again :)
Hah, yea, I suppose at this point you're probably very used to just automatically turning LKA off before leaving that not having to do it might actually feel kind of weird.. Kind of a shame about the ACC not being better, that's one feature I every time I drive. I think I'd miss it a lot if it weren't up to par. A panicky ACC sounds like too much for my taste. 😄
@@siasek I think my only problem as this stage is the fact that when you get a notification while connected via Bluetooth to the car, it lowers the volume by a few levels and stays like that until you turn the car off. Quite annoying when you're listening to music, you get a whatsapp notification and then you have to increase the volume by 5 levels or so to get to the previous volume 🤦 On the ACC part I'm probably making it sound worse than it is, or I've gotten used to it... to be fair, I still enjoy every drive in it and I use ACC *every single drive*, so I probably have an unconscious response built in for how I should use it. Same as turning off LKA I guess 😆
I thought it was just me imagining things but I'm glad it's not. I've warned numerous people off the MG4 because it's so erratic when using cruise control, slows down on slight bends, dangerously applies LKA at random and re-enables it without telling you if you stop briefly to jump out of the car (without turning it off or locking). Bluetooth is next to useless (worst of any car I've used in 13 years) and the radio takes several minutes to initialise. The only good points of the Xpower are its acceleration and the heated steering wheel, and if updates don't significantly improve the owner experience I'll keep recommending people avoid it.
@@goreallyspeed4819 You'll have to force your dealers to update your infotainment and ADAS modules, some of the issues you mention here are sorted, especially the Bluetooth one. Problem is the ACC relies on the radar which has a slow refresh rate and is probably not of a good quality, even after the recent updates it's still quite poor and binary. Instead of modulating the regen a bit better, I can hear it slamming the front brakes, then I can see it accelerating and then repeating the same thing, even when driving behind a constant speed vehicle. Not particularly impressed but I suppose I'd rather it being a bit overreactive than useless and not slow down.
In Australia the latest version is R11, and I am still using the R04 on the essence. Have been to 4 dealers and none were able to update the software. They look at my VIN number (Vehicle Identification Number) and if there are any updates it would show next to it. But so far MG have not release this update which is very annoying. What do you suggest, apAart from going to fair trading and resolving the hard way. There are also some safety issues such as when car points uphill in park mode, after a start and selecting reverse it does not release the brakes. I have to nudge the accelerator, causing the car to rol back and then brake quickly to avoid an accident/
I'm sorry to hear about that. Software issues and customer service have definitely been one of the biggest complaints I've heard from the MG4 community. I am afraid I don't have much of a suggestion on how to resolve this. Have you tried reaching out to MG directly? I do recommend checking out the mgevs.com discussion forum, they have a good community and someone may be able to suggest a solution.
Se Lr owner here, this week my Mg4 failed to unlock and start up due to the 12v battery going down to 3.5v i cant understand how this was possible as there is always enough charge within the main battery, I had a feeling something was wrong as for about a month the radio was failing to play but Bluetooth would, resolution was to use a boost pack £40 from Amazon which inturn activated the relays and started repowering the battery and radio came alive. I mostly charge with AC so wondering if the inverter drained it too low although im not leaving it on charge for more than 8 hours.
Unfortunately I have a serious issue with r59. Since it's been done the car charging to 100% from connecting the charging cable resp. turning on charging. Even if I set a lower percentage or schedule charging it doesn't stop or doesn't start to charge. Only manual turn on/off is working.
Ah, that seems to be a problem with not updating other controllers.🫤 Like if the dealership doesn't do all the necessary updates altogether, it seems to cause issues. Charging module unit etc... I suggest checking out the mgevs.com forum to find more info!
My Luxury has a different software, the one are you speaking about is SWI68...1300R46, mine is SWI133...1300R30. Mine keep regen settings in memory, has shortcut to deactivate lka and stuffs, on top of a very solid cruise control performance. But other suffs doesn't feels ok, like speed signs recognition locking on 50 km/h at first start of the day or digital key function missing. Overal I'm pleased with the car but software wise MG4 is the wild west...
Wow, different software versions for different trims? That's wild! Cool that your version remembers regen settings and has that LKA shortcut. Solid cruise control is a plus too. But yeah, those quirks with speed sign recognition and missing digital key... that's frustrating. "Wild West" is spot on for MG4's software situation. Glad you're enjoying the car overall though!
@@siasek Mine is My24 (past July 1st 2024), got a new system to fullfill the new EU rules about safety and stuffs. It got some minor changes, cabin's roof and pillar's interior is not dark grey anymore, but very clear grey tone (close to white) that coupled with courtesy lights in the cabin and boot being now led, makes the interior way less dark. Full localisation for the sat nav. Sat nav now has a function called "EV navigation" that calculate charging stops (you can set some parameters about charging stations, state of charge on the way and at destination and it sets for you the charging stops). The small net in front of middle armrest disappeard. WLTP is now 450 km (on par with comfort trim) and 0-100km/h is now 7.1s. If you go on the EU configurator (or at least the italian one) you will se the new specifications, you will also se a Luxury trim with the small LFP battery pack and the 125kW powertrain for 4k euro less then the 64kWh one. Given the updates on the R59, I guess it is targeted to close the gap with the new system.
What is the problem with the key? My alarm is still going off - the car did not read the key. I change the battery in the key all the time!I have version 33.Is it possible to turn off the alarm? The hooting is annoying. thanks to
I have R59 (SW168 29958 1300R59 which I think is Release 59) It was installed in response to a catalogue of shortcomings. It doesn't have a short cut option to enable/disable LKA. It doesn't have 1mph increments for ACC. It has improved things a little. There are still a lot of annoyances and inconsistencies with this version
The one mile increments in ACC should have already been there before the update, now there is an additional option to increase by 5 miles if you hold the button down longer. I'm surprised to hear you don't have the disable LKA shortcut, everyone else I've read from has it working and is so glad for it. if these two aren't working properly, chances are your service updated the infotainment but didn't bother updating the units
@@siasek I have had another look at this again. I do have the LKA shortcut on the drop down screen. It's labelled ELK!! Another example of the total inconsistency in the software. ACC speed increments were 5mph before R59 and after achieved with the LH joystick being pushed up for + down for -. Are you using a different button/control?
@@paulreed69So now it takes three clicks on the screen and not four to disable LKA. Great improvement. Not.... MG should have a look at Renault. They have a 5 star NCAP rating with the Megane EV, and still a single button to deactivate LKA (if you configure it correctly). Btw, the latest version of the speed adjustment for ACC only switches the hold function of the button. Previously, one click was 5 km. Holding it made the speed change with only one. Now, it is the other way around.
All the MG4 needs in memorisable DRIVER PROFILES that memorise all important features such as One Pedal , Lane Keep Assist , and choice of Cruise Control or Limiter , Eco mode etc and all the major problems would go away . My own greatest complaint is the menu diving you have to do to change from Cruise control which I always use on Motorways ( Autobahns, Autoroutes , Freeways ) and Manual Limiter that I always want to use in towns . If I could memorise two different profiles that I could switch using one of the Joysticks all this would be solved . My 15 year old Renault Scenic has a single physical button to change from Cruise to Limiter so why not my 2024 MG4 ? This would be a simple software rewrite - I know I used to write software and would overnight change the MG4 into a fabulous car no longer marred by terrible software . Also as the default settings of LKA etc could still be ON before choosing your prefered Driver Profile the Safety Ratings of the car would not be affected . Some one needs to tell the Safety Ratings people that having to menu dive while driving is a very dangerous thing much worse than their stupid rules about LKA etc .
One of the main problems for dealers is the arcane way MG/SAIC do updates direct from China servers, not supplying local copies. This makes it horribly slow and unreliable. Also not really informing dealers in sufficient detail all of the module update inter dependances.
On the plus side, I had the adaptive cruise control fix added last December at service without asking for it. It's a more logical way to use the cruise control.
Nice! That's a pleasant surprise from MG service. Sounds like the new system is working better for you. It's good to hear some positive experiences with these updates.
Yeah, just like with the Nissan Leaf, where independent garages can pretty much do anything! If someone cracks MG’s firmware, it could be a game changer-better updates, hidden features, maybe even fixes MG hasn’t bothered with. Would be awesome to see that happen!
In Australia- My 23 xpower has all those features. Picked up feb 24. , have still noticed - LKA still agressive, phantom breaking in cruise control at lower speeds. So around town etc. had one killer slam on of brakes , mind u i cant blame it, a small bush the size of a child popped out from behind a power pole in the wind. I am one of the xpower owners with the vibration, well known amongst xpower owners. 90 to 115kmh it vibrates bad.
I am seriously considering getting an MG4 but I want to be sure that the car wont try to kill me because of some software engineers finger trouble. Especially in the MG4 Xpower... where acceleration is insane. I used to own a Corvette and that was 0-60 in 5 seconds and a top speed of 175mph... several times I almost lost it but it had no software controlling vital parts. Only my brain, my quick reactions, and I lived.
I have an MG4 Trophy Long Range, and however it is not X-Power but in sport mode it is also insanely quick. My colleague who has an Ioniq 5 was surprised because my MG4 is much quickly accelerates than his Ioniq 5. The hardware(suspension, engine, lights, steering, breaks, noise insulation) is excellent, better than my former Corolla hybrid, interior has a little bit cheaper feeling , practicality is better despite lack of light above backseats. The standard dark interior is very depressive, so I bought the car with the light carpet interior which looks superb. However the Lane Keeping Assist is extremely aggressive on narrow roads or lanes. It was far better on my Corolla. I have R46 version of the infotainment but I have no clue about the firmware number of the LKA. So I switch it off before each trip together with the Front Collision Assist to avoid any phantom breaking.
How about the first major change would be to get Android Auto/Apple Car play to work without any fudge fixes by owners. It more often fails then works without these fudge fixes. OTA would be another change to make the process better, but having an option to "Dump" the current complete software/configuration (to say a USB) for recovery should any update fail would also make it safer for future updates to allow for recovery to a know state.
You're spot on about the Android Auto/Apple CarPlay issue. OTA updates would be a nice upgrade for sure. Love your idea about backing up the current software to USB, it'd definitely make updates less nerve-wracking if we knew we could always go back to a working version. Seems like MG's got some homework to do to get these basics sorted out. Fingers crossed they're listening to feedback like yours!
Thanks for your videos, there is little information about MG problems in the Czech Republic and the dealers don't really know anything. Do you know if anyone managed to complete the one-pedal steering function? I have MG4 3/2023 and even after updating to R46 this feature is not available. All R46 models currently sold have this. thank you very much
The one-pedal driving is pretty specific in the MG4 - the battery has to be below 90% charge and at a certain temperature for one-pedal to work. However, since you can't tell what temp. the battery is, I don't know which temperature. Oh yea, and some markets, such as Australia, don't even have one-pedal driving an option. So... that's fun.🙄 I'm glad you find my videos helpful! Unfortunately info about the MG4 seems to be in short supply even abroad and one has to go trolling through discussion forums to get some answers. The fact that some of the issues and/or features differ based on location doesn't help, of course.
17 May in the UK I had the R59 update, after which I had no Vehicle Hotshot feature - no internet access. 12 September update: I have been informed by my dealership that MG have now said that other MG4 owners have the same problem after the R59 update, MG are working on a fix. Also where are the promised OTA updates.
i had the update since months with the no breaking in corners... it was the MOST IMPORTANT UPDATE... you couldnt use ACC without giving it manuel gas in every corner...
Many thanks for this info. I've only recently become a MG4 owner and still learning. However, just checked the software revision on my 64kwh Luxury is sw168.....1300R40. Is there any list over the different versions and as mine is new I'm wondering if maybe it should have had version R46
Congrats on your new MG4! Unfortunately, there's no official list of MG software versions. It's all a bit confusing with different trims having different versions. You probably want to check with your dealer if R46 is available for your car, could bring some nice improvements.
If MG software has the ability to change driver's preferences to suit their needs, why then can MG not make the software remember those preferences instead of customers going through the routine every time they get into their vehicles? PS. thanks for the info.
Great question! It's pretty weird that MG lets you set preferences but doesn't save them. Seems like a basic feature they've missed. 🫤 Hopefully MG's taking note of feedback... Glad the info was helpful! 😊
@@siasekyou know that almost all new EVs do not remember settings when switched off so why suggest this should be different for MG4, it's clear MG could easily do this but choose not to for reasons we are not clear about. You should make this part of your negative comments about all the other alternative brands of EVs and not make it appear to just be an MG shortcoming.
@@siasek MG4 saves all settings except Euro NCAP safety drive settings. Enabled LKA is one of them. This requirement from Euro NCAP to all cars with 5 starts to reset these settingd to safe default state at car starting.
@evgenykyselgov9533 the stupid rules regarding the ADAS safety features must have been decided by a bicycle riding tree hugging greenie at Euro NCAP who has probably never driven a car in their live. Who needs Lane keeping assistance on local roads why did they make the rule that LKA should be activated at 37MPH and for the auto emergency braking to activate for things seen by the side facing camera. on my MG4 the auto emergency braking activates when I pass a parked car after letting the oncoming traffic pass. Ideally these functions need to be set up so the auto emergency braking activates if there is an obstruction directly in front of the car and the LKA would be better if it becomes active at say 60MPH as I feel LKA is a good feature for motorway and major trunk road driving but a complete nuisance while driving around town or on country lanes. Come on we don't need LKA at low speeds!!!
I receive R46 update on my MG4 Luxury V1 3 weeks ago, since then I cannot schedule the charge of battery. Limiting battery to 80% is alos not working. Is R59 version could solve this?
Hello from Denmark, after long time on the Internet I am sure that you are the person who can help me and my wife to buy the right car, my wife want the Renault megane e-tech 60, I want the MG 4 Luxury most because of the longer warranty. Both cars are fine and we are mostly 2 persons driving among in Denmark and the northern Germany. My wife drive always very fast, she is a young car interested lady on 75 year. I am 77, with a racing licenze in my pocket, and drives slowly,.... To slowly said the lady of the house. You are the best MG expert in the world and you must know..... Is the MG4 full of problems? should we take a megane.? Thanks for your honest car test😊
Hi, thank you for writing! I'm flattered that you value my input. Just a disclaimer, I don't and have not owned the MG4, however, based on my research and personal experience with the Megane, I would definitely recommend going that way. I really haven't found anything about it that I don't like in the 2 months I've had it. There are a couple small things, such as unnecessarily (in my opinion) large plastic panels on the side of the front windshield, but overall, everything about it has been wonderful. I love driving it - it makes me feel like I can rely on it to do what I want it to do. It "sticks" to the road, so to speak, which is great especially on winding country roads. All of the systems and assistants work great, the infotainment is clear, smooth and intuitive and yea, everything just kind of works and the car is really fun to drive, especially at higher speeds, while giving one a sense of confidence and safety on the road. Like it just listens. I've also already received 4 OTA updates and the one time I reached out to customer support with a question, I received a fast and helpful response. As far as MG4, I do think it's a good car in many ways, but unfortunately different owners have had vastly different experiences with the car. Many owners report numerous software issues, confusion or being given the runaround at dealerships if they need something fixed and just an overall inconsistent experience. As as result, some owners have started making their own fixes. MG also still hasn't rolled out OTA updates, so every time there is a software update, it requires a trip to the dealership, which is not ideal, at least in my opinion. Please let me know if you have any specific questions that I could answer, especially about the Megane. Hopefully this helps 🙂
I hope my dealer will update the software when my MG4 trophy goes in for its 1st service. but i will say even with its faults i still love my MG4 trophy its the first EV i have owned and since having the EV i would never by choice go back to an ICE car as the economy of running the EV is so good as i have a charger at home and am on an EV tariff this has reduced my motoring costs dramatically. I now pay about £4 a week for the approximately 300 miles i do each week i used to pay over £60 in petrol to do the same mileage in my previous car.
Due to pick up my new Trophy Extended Range tomorrow (UK). Must say I am a bit perturbed to read the problems with software updates. Al the blurb suggested OTA updates would be readily available. With some of the forum posts I've seen with respect to software glitches I'd assumed that they would be sorted in due time by readily available updates. Be checking what version I'm on first thing and demanding an update if it's not on the latest. Somehow think this might not be an easy argument.
What you are claiming to be R59 is pretty much already available with R46 that comes with updated modules, but only if you complain about the poor functioning of the systems. The only new thing coming together with R59 is the QUICKER option to disable LKA (confusingly named ELK, which is a mode.. and still too slow). And, R59 is UK ONLY. Europe does NOT receive R59.
Hello, it often happens that the car writes a key loading error and the alarm goes off after opening the door. I changed the battery in the key, but after a month the alarm sounds again.
That sounds frustrating! It could be an issue with the key's signal or a software glitch in the car's security system. If replacing the key battery only fixes it temporarily, it might be worth checking with your dealership for a firmware update or a deeper diagnostic. Hope you get it sorted soon! 🚗🔧😊
SAIC-MG simply has too many software forks for different markets, this fragmentation is what I think is leading to slow update rollout, and taking so long to solve issues like LKA which so many users complained about. In Thailand they not only have a different screen and software, but also OTA updates. The promise of which have been quietly removed from the EU promotional materials. Although OTA capability is somewhat complex, and I think these cars are not capable of OTA at all (since OTA updates must be able to be rolled back in the case of a failed update to avoid bricking the car, this requires some sort of recovery mode/partition)
Seems to me the LKA defeat requires as many screen interactions as the previous iteration? I don’t own an MG4 but it is a top candidate for my first ev in the coming months and the LKA issue is something I’m keen to experience on a test drive, just to see for myself…
Had my software updated for free in June here in NZ. LKA is much more civilised, car will actually drive itself (admittedly very jerkedly) on TJA now but NO where near as well as our 2018 Ioniq, LKA much easier to turn off and voice recognition seems a bit better. Software is the biggest fail on this car. MG need to employ some Sth Korean software engineers!
Nice to hear about the free update in NZ, sounds like LKA's behaving better now. 😊 TJA improvements are good, even if it's still not super smooth. Funny how it doesn't match up to your older Ioniq though! Agree on the software being the weak point. MG could really use some help in that department.
@ Daymans Nelson. No; I just emailed and said that I didnt use the LKA or ACC as I didnt consider them fit for purpose (mine is an August 2023 car so one of the very first in the country). I got a reply within hours with a request to contact them to make a time.
@@andymcgregortheatre nope… i managed to speak to the dealer . They said it might be cause I used one pedal drive mode too much and the disc brakes got “rusty” so he recommended me to use the normal mode with lowest regen (in order to use break pedal the most) to get the disc brakes to work properly again 😅✌🏻
I'm wondering which EV to buy. I really like your explanation of the software update problem. MG should be able to learn from this, but obviously it is not trivial as VW also found it almost impossible to solve and has now joined with Xpeng in the hope of a solution. I remember Tesla struggled many years ago with their app but now it's quite great. I don't think I'll buy an MG4.
Hey @ThoughtfulAl , thanks so much for sharing your perspective. I completely understand your hesitation when it comes to choosing the right EV. As you mentioned, software can really make or break the driving experience. It’s not just MG-other brands have struggled with this too even Tesla took years to get it right. If a brand’s software still feels clunky, it’s absolutely fair to look elsewhere. I’ve been in a similar situation myself. I drove a Citroën e-C4 for about a year and a half, and if I were someone who just hopped in and drove without a second thought, I’d have been happy. But I’m a bit detail-oriented, and those little software shortcomings bothered me every single time I got behind the wheel. Instead of growing to love that car, I ended up counting down the days until I’d replace it. Now I’ve switched to a Renault Megane E-Tech, which uses Google Automotive, and the difference is incredible. It’s a complete step up in terms of user experience. Honestly, I’m amazed Renault pulled it off so well. If software and a refined user interface matter to you, it’s worth considering a model that has truly integrated a top-notch system. Good luck with your choice!
@@siasek OMG that's the most awesome reply, thank you, you are dedicated to this channel which is a lesson to me for mine. I really would have liked the Renault but we suddenly can't get Renaults in NZ any more. Thanks again!
I find it annoying that the 'custom' driving mode doesn't remember the regen settings - it's not much use as things stand. My car also still has the other issues such as Lane Kill Assist and a very poor interface for the radio and a flaky smartphone app. MG has told me I need to go to the dealer for software fixes eg on the smartphone app, which is a pain. I'm also very disappointed that there are no OTA updates - despite it being advertised when I bought the car. Overall, I'm happy with the car, but I definitely will not buy another MG because the software update process is rubbish.
Ugh, yes... that is annoying! The custom mode not remembering regen settings is definitely a pain. MG's still got a lot to fix! I'm glad you like the car, but sure don't blame you for not even considering MG for your next purchase. Their software update process needs serious work.
Had my first service.i said i had issues with bluetooth and no temperature display. When i got the car back i asked did i get an update and they said no. They said there was no valet reason to up date the car software. Never heard such crap in my life.would have assumed this would habe been done automatically . Amazing no other manufacture have this issue. Obvously mg manufacture policy is if its not broken dont fix it. Well its not fixed.
I'm sorry to say that this is what really bothers me about MG too. Remember when they promised online updates? I have a Renault Megane E-tech now and in a couple of weeks I've already gotten the 4x OTA update and also there is a new version of the mobile app with a redesign that is now perfectly functional and clear. If it works so well for them, why not for MG? Seems like in the future I will be choosing cars based on software support only. And unfortunately MG doesn't really have the best. 🫤I'm sorry and I hope this will change.
Mg4 owners in the Philippines still don't have the ismart app. We're missing out on all the functionality and have to open the car to check state of charge.
Ouch, that's rough! Having to physically check the car for charge status is a hassle. I hope MG gets on that, as it's a pretty basic expectation for modern EVs. Fingers crossed they roll it out to you guys soon!
I'm a new Essence 64 owner. My menu got an option to update the software. So I don't really understand all the comments that there is no OTA update. Does it actually not work? When I chose it says it's up to date (car is connected to my home wifi)
OTA, absolutely. With ability to roll back. If the customer screws it up then dealers can do a factory reset and charge for it. We need the option. Also access to API . Must be well documented . Otherwise I will switch to a brand that has this feature.
Yeah, OTA updates would be pretty sweet, and having a rollback option just makes sense. Good call on the API access too - that could open up some cool possibilities. It's a bit odd MG hasn't gotten on board with this stuff yet. I can see why you'd consider other brands if they don't catch up soon. These features are becoming pretty important.
This does not sound like an update. It is just extending fixes which we already have in the Australian cars to the English market. The cruise control you mention is how my MG4 has always worked. The others sound like MG in the UK and Europe are being allowed to catch up to the existing Australian and New Zealand firmware changes introduced here much earlier in the year.
@jamesfairhurst8525 it certainly has it's uses. However, you must also acknowledge the increased risk of brake disk corrosion if using regen all the time.
Agree about the corrosion, but it depends on design - I used the brakes all the time in my e-C4 and still the rear discs were significantly rusted after 3 years and 35,000 miles, they repaired them at the 3 yearly service. (regrinding)
MG4 in Thailand has OTA function. And now MG4 is selling in Taiwan for 2 months but not having OTA function. The issues you mentioned in video are not happening in Taiwan version of MG4. Unfortunately, Taiwan version of MG4 cannot remember the settings of Driving Mode and disable Speeding Alert. After all, MG4 is a fun car to drive, I am happy with the car for 3 weeks.
Interesting! Sounds like features vary quite a bit between countries. Cool that Thailand's got OTA, but bummer about Taiwan missing out. Glad to hear the Taiwan version doesn't have some of those issues, though the forgotten settings are a pain. I'm happy that you're enjoying your MG4 overall! It's a fun ride, even with a few quirks.
Definitely ask at the dealership, but also about updating other modules, not just updating the infotainment... It's important to keep everything up to date. But I've read that dealers are only willing to update if you have some problems and it can be played off as a warranty repair...
I have Mazda CX60.. for 12 months the software was a nightmare... big recall update for LKA, ACC etc... like a new car. I don't think Chinese / Japanese understand the EU regulations requiring all of this safety "Crap". (neither do the European drivers). At least in the Mazda I could create a shortcut to turn it all off.. When will European regulators understand, people like to drive the car not have the car dangerously overriding their driving.
I wish the MG4 actually had some competition.... I didn't buy one because of the brand, but as a relatively sporty, fun to drive offering, with good range and consumption, and a practical 5-door shape (no SUV thanks!), at its price point it is completely without competition.
@@CreRayYes. There wasn't much competition when launched but I think we'll see more choice soon. I may also opt for something a bit bigger next time too
@@chrispenn715 It seems that all competitors are mainly bringing SUVs, even Alfa Romeo's first EV is a SUV! I like to sit deep and feel connected to the road, something an SUV can't offer.
Got the R59 update? Tell us if it’s worth the trip to the service center! How’s your MG4 performing now?
Still have the R40 and the dealer says they don't know anything about the new version for my MG4 :)
Got my mg4 51kw in June has this lka shortcut maybe it has ota updates greetings from ireland
I have had my r59 update and all control units updated car driving great now no glitches on my mg4 yaaa took about 3 hours for all updates thanks mg👍
Which dealership did you get that ?
I find it amazing that a company the size of SAIC doesn’t feel it important enough to put in more resources to keep MG4 customers happy….
Ask any mg5 owner...
They have so many different software forks running for different markets.
It boggles the mind, also because of different regulations like safety assists for Euro NCAP.
In Thailand they have a completely different screen, software and OTA updates.
Quite bad of SAIC-MG to fragment the software development so much.
I love my MG4 but unless they soon have over the air updates I will be looking for a different brand in the near future.
R59 is not available in Germany so far )
BTW: I don´t have bluetooth problems as well ;)
A "must have" feature would the ability that the car stores the last settings, as driving mode, recuperation and other settings
Providing the update tools to the community to use at their own risk would be an excellent move for SAIC. I would definitely give it a try myself! I doupt it is in their DNA though…
Would be great! Let's hope they get inspired by one of my videos (or the discussion forums 😊)
At least we can do the navigation maps update ourselves
@@deanharrysmith718 "I doupt it is in their DNA " HaHaha......not wrong there, imo. I should have factored that into my decision to buy.
One thing that people still complain about is the hotspot (I don't use it so I couldn't comment on this yet!) and this means there will be another update coming (R68 or 69, can't remember now)
PS: Good to see videos from you again :)
Quite annoying when you're listening to music, you get a whatsapp notification and then you have to increase the volume by 5 levels or so to get to the previous volume 🤦
On the ACC part I'm probably making it sound worse than it is, or I've gotten used to it... to be fair, I still enjoy every drive in it and I use ACC *every single drive*, so I probably have an unconscious response built in for how I should use it.
Good detailed summary for MG4 owners who want to keep up-to-date without diving into forums!
Thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful 😊
@@siasek Fun fact, did you know "fina" means nice/good/nice looking in Swedish?
Here in Australia, were away behind the updates available elsewhere. All quite unacceptable in this day and age.
The biggest of the improvements I already got with the R46 update:
- ACC 1&5 km/h steps
- AAC not slowing down in corners
Download of this update is slow but it only once. You can save it on USB Flash drive and use saved copy to update the cars in your service
I understand, hopefully they'll move it to a faster European server soon.😄 Maybe once there's a European factory?
On the plus side, I had the adaptive cruise control fix added last December at service without asking for it. It's a more logical way to use the cruise control.
Nice! That's a pleasant surprise from MG service. Sounds like the new system is working better for you. It's good to hear some positive experiences with these updates.
The person who filter the firmware's source code is going to be a hero for many.
Yeah, just like with the Nissan Leaf, where independent garages can pretty much do anything! If someone cracks MG’s firmware, it could be a game changer-better updates, hidden features, maybe even fixes MG hasn’t bothered with. Would be awesome to see that happen!
Nice, this update might persuade me to getting an MG4 then the easy disable LKA!
I put my Xpower vibration at 60-70mph down to maybe tyre flat spots - didn't realise it's an issue in general, that's shockingly bad design.
Is a Linux version available?
So... that's fun.🙄
I'm glad you find my videos helpful! Unfortunately info about the MG4 seems to be in short supply even abroad and one has to go trolling through discussion forums to get some answers. The fact that some of the issues and/or features differ based on location doesn't help, of course.
Příští týden jedu pro MG4 do Olomouce. Jedno pedál tam je - jezdil jsem s ním zkušební jízdu.
I expect something like user profiles to set start settings for different car users.
User profiles would be awesome! It's pretty standard in many cars now... hopefully MG will consider adding in future updates. Good call!
Some guys have received R63 in France! Does anyone have info what's new\changed in it?
If MG software has the ability to change driver's preferences to suit their needs, why then can MG not make the software remember those preferences instead of customers going through the routine every time they get into their vehicles?
PS. thanks for the info.
Great question! It's pretty weird that MG lets you set preferences but doesn't save them. Seems like a basic feature they've missed. 🫤
Hopefully MG's taking note of feedback...

Thanks for the update!
My pleasure! 😊
Turn your LKA off every trip - in 2 months I've almost crashed 3 times due to strong phantom yanks to the wheel.
@siasek the graphics on both screens (with Chinese text) look much better. Are the two screens using those graphics in China?
TJA improvements are good, even if it's still not super smooth. Funny how it doesn't match up to your older Ioniq though!
Agree on the software being the weak point. MG could really use some help in that department.
Well done on the free update! Which dealership? Did you have to read the riot act?
@ Daymans Nelson. No; I just emailed and said that I didnt use the LKA or ACC as I didnt consider them fit for purpose (mine is an August 2023 car so one of the very first in the country). I got a reply within hours with a request to contact them to make a time.
Hey ! Has anyone experienced problems with the ONE PEDAL mode ?
2 days ago, it stopped working as it used to. Anyone know how to fix?
Is it because you have more than 80% in the battery? I saw elsewhere that it won't work as there is nowhere for the energy to go.
Is this only for the Trophy? What about other MG4 models?

Personnellement j'aimerais l'ota et surtout la possibilité de mémoriser les réglages
je pense que l'on ne verra jamais l'ota ;)
Had my first service.i said i had issues with bluetooth and no temperature display. When i got the car back i asked did i get an update and they said no. They said there was no valet reason to up date the car software. Never heard such crap in my life.would have assumed this would habe been done automatically . Amazing no other manufacture have this issue. Obvously mg manufacture policy is if its not broken dont fix it. Well its not fixed.
On the R21 update
I'm sorry to say that this is what really bothers me about MG too. Remember when they promised online updates? I have a Renault Megane E-tech now and in a couple of weeks I've already gotten the 4x OTA update and also there is a new version of the mobile app with a redesign that is now perfectly functional and clear. If it works so well for them, why not for MG? Seems like in the future I will be choosing cars based on software support only. And unfortunately MG doesn't really have the best. 🫤I'm sorry and I hope this will change.
Yea, it's a nice enough car, but in terms of software updates, MG is in quite bad shape.
No, it doesn't work
Maybe something's in the works! Don't lose hope after just 3 years of the car being on the market😄
I would really like one pedal driving to be added to my 2022 Trophy. That and the promised OTA updates..
It's a novelty you wouldn't use it after a week or so
@@scottmurray8483I beg to differ. I use it in city and loves it
@@scottmurray8483 I beg to differ, Sir. Adapting to using it improves the efficiency and range of the car, by slowing optimally.
Greate video, thank you
It's my pleasure, I'm happy you liked it 😊
MG4 in Thailand has OTA function.
Is it deployed world wide?
I have to do my yearly maintenance, I hope they'll update my MG4 Trophy (Luxury) to R59 in France...
Definitely ask at the dealership, but also about updating other modules, not just updating the infotainment... It's important to keep everything up to date. But I've read that dealers are only willing to update if you have some problems and it can be played off as a warranty repair...
We will be changing our brand over the frustrating after service from MG
Oh I totally get that. I don't think I'd have the patience for their run-around either. so far I can definitely recommend the Renault Megane E-tech! 😊
Vous pouvez me dire quand on aura la mise à jour r59 en Belgique ?
Unfortunately that info isn't available.. at least I haven't been able to find it 🫤
I have Mazda CX60.. for 12 months the software was a nightmare... big recall update for LKA, ACC etc... like a new car.
Remember tesla is on release version 12 + lot of sub versions and still is, so of cause there will be more update on our MG4XP
My SE already has this
That's great, it took a long time for the Trophy, probably due to more complex software with more features
Dear lord, these assist programs seem to make life harder... kinda putting me off an mg4.
Best solution for me is to buy a different brand next time 😂
I wish the MG4 actually had some competition....
Just drive the car in tow mode, problems solved
😂 now there's a great solution I hadn't thought of yet!
What functionality is lost when driving in tow mode?
Can’t buy one until the software is FREE OTA.
Vocal fry. I don't need that.
😅 ok then!
Buy a BYD instead.
I will NEVER EVER buy such a car.... sorry....
