MG4 6 Months Later | Honest Owner's Review | Which MG4 To Buy...

- 6 months ago I purchased my MG4 SE Standard Range and in today's video I'll be giving an honest review of ownership with the pros, the cons and 6 months later, which MG4 I'd buy if I did it all over again.
The MG4 SE SR is the most affordable EV you can buy in the UK with a decent useable range. If you're in the market or ready to leap into EV ownership, at £26,999 (£25,999 when I purchased it), Carplay/Android Auto, V2L and a great suite of safety feature, the MG4 really is a compelling option.

My brother bought his in January and has never stopped praising it since he took delivery. He says it is without doubt, the best car he's ever owned and knocks other EVs costing £15-20k more for six.
Had my Trophy for about 3 months now, love driving this baby, what a beautiful drive. I'd say the software can be improved but otherwise, very pleased with my purchase.
Also, I'd love to have the 360 camera to come on automatically when I get close to the car or an object in front....
Fun to follow MG in the future, my Tesla’s are now 9 years old with 300.000-350.000km on each no big issues only door handles so far.
I've had the MG4 Comfort (the version that until the 'Long Range' had the longest range of 450 kilometres) as a company car for six weeks now (driven > 4200 kilometres already), and I'm loving it.
The car's a newer version (this one has a rear window wiper) than the one you have, and I always stick to the 'Eco' setting. I really like the battery efficiency, which as long as you drive tops 100 km/h (about 60 m/h) is pretty accurate. Go past that and you'll burn energy rapidly, but here (Netherlands) that isn't a problem as during the day there's a speed limit of 100 km/h anyway. And sticking to 100 km/h during the night actually feels more comfortable as well. Go lower speeds and you'll find out that the regenerative power is amazing. One time I had to drive about 11 kilometres through countryside, through a village with maximum limits of 50 km/h and 30 km/h. Sticking to decently conserving energy, the range of the car only dropped by 5.5 kilometres. One time in my city when it was busy and I had to slow down or brake, I actually gained 1% energy and more range! That actually begs the question whether it's possible to gain energy by driving :)
For its size the car is very spacey indeed and is really useful for the work that I do, which regularly requires driving all sorts of equipment with me.
I haven't had too much issues yet with the fast-charging capabilities: due to the range, I rarely need it. And when I do, all I need to do is get some coffee at the gas station to take a break, and by the time the coffee's finished there's plenty of range left to get back home. But I'll have to see how this will work during winter.
Disadvantages:
I've driven test runs with the Luxury (the first version with spoilers), so I know which features I'm missing. It's also odd that some of the things that they've saved money on is for example being unable to fold the rear mirrors. That could one day be a difficult problem.
The car also looks very dirty quite quickly: it's easy to see your fingerprints on the screen and on the outside on especially the back you can fairly quickly see it getting dirty.
Not being able to save your customised settings is just dumb, really dumb. Why offer so many features if you do not want your customer to keep them? I really had to teach myself to when the car starts to do the set up that I want to have. I've already given up on some adjustments, as it is just a hassle to keep doing it.
I also really do not like it that you cannot turn off the automatic breaking systems when driving on cruise control. The system is absolutely not subtle, and I'm constantly worried that something that is supposed to make you safer ends up causing accidents to those driving behind me - because sometimes that breaking can be really ruthless and absolutely uncomfortable to the one behind me. Because most of the population hasn't driven an EV yet and so isn't aware that this can be a thing in EV's. It made my mitigate this problem, by switching on and off the cruise control or using the e-paddle when necessary to overtake the cruise control and prevent the quick breaking.
Charging on regular charges is also frequently quite a bit lower than the maximum capacity: quite often it doesn't get past the 50% capability, at best it might reach something like 65%. This causes the charging to take more time than necessary.
And I've now got my first bug: when closing the car, after 1-2 seconds the trunk opens. I can't find a way of solving this and therefore will have to go to the dealer to get it fixed.
My opinion so far: I really like the car, I'm happy with it. It does have some nuisances (besides the automatic breaking, that really is a hassle), but they're not a major problem. I'll see how the car will function over time, especially during winter. But so far I think it won't give any major problems.
Wish we could get it in USA. Cheers to Norway, very pretty, and some fantastic musical artists. I am a fan of NHL player Daniel Sprong, born there.
I really appreciated your comments, super useful and detailed with real user information.
I’m really close to buy a MG4 Luxury (updated version) as my first very own car. It just arrived to Colombia at the end of December 2023 for around 40000 USD (the previous version didn’t land here). For reference, the standard BYD Dolphin is about 38750 USD, it comes without sunroof, 13s 0-100km/h. A Nissan Leaf would be 41250 USD (idk the trim). Renault Megan’s E-tech 50000 USD (idk the trim). BYD Atto 3 48750 (top trim version).
Do you have any updates so far? I would highly appreciate your comments.
Bought long range long range MG4 23 plate, ex garage demo and 6 months old. It still has 6 yrs warranty. Love it. I have a ‘dumb’ home charger from a previous EV, and the in-car scheduled (cheap rate) charging was difficult (kept reverting to a different schedule), but trial and error seems to have worked… used CCS at Instavolt recently, which worked at 75kw in sleet. Changed to MG 4 for range, CCS charging facility and price. The drive is very comfortable. The car isn’t brutish looking and I use ECO even on motorways. A really good feature is that if I really accelerate hard (eg, to avoid an issue) it changes to NORMAL to get me out of a bind. The really irritating defult feature is LANE ASSIST - I live near narrow country lanes, and don’t like the ‘wheel grab’ effect, so I have to sit and programme.
Nice clear presentation style with no frills and very informative content - subscribed!
I drive a M3 Performance from 2020. But I have to admit this MG4 is much more comfortable. Even I admitted that it drove better then my Tesla. Good car.
It’s a great point. Admittedly, later post 2021 M3s are much more comfortable. Our 2020 is M3 LR is being replaced later this month with a MY LR and I’m not going to miss it, UK roads are just unforgiving for stiff suspension in heavy cars.
I bought a MG4 STD in Ukraine a month ago and in the car specification max charging power is 85kW, so I think this is the right number, which corresponds to your tests.
I agree that’s it’s definitely the ceiling. It’s incredibly misleading from a consumer standpoint. The saving grace is the great charging curve👍
I think it was a late decision to flatten the charging curve, meaning lower peak but also higher valley..
I just came back from a road trip in which I use ABRP to plan my trip.. Interestingly, ABRP managed to predict how long I need to stop for charging quite accurately (within a minute or two).. So I think ABRP crew somehow got the latest charging curve info..
What price did you pay for it in Ukraine?
@@ghostnetworkNL 25K Euros, but some items are excluded in comparison to UK/EU versions: 16 steel wheels, no leather on driving wheel, no charger included, no 4G connectivity.
Wtf isn't Ukraine at war
The MG4 fits 3 children car seats no problem in the back. Quite spacious especially because it is a rather small vehicle from the outside.
Hi Stewart, nice to meet you earlier and chat about the mg , as I said , we’ve had two now and they have been great, no problems and great build quality .
Great to meet you too 👍
Had my Trophy for about 5 months now and done a bit over 4,000 miles. Very happy with it and I've done several long trips (260 miles+) with it. Only one minor fail was the passenger door unlock button has failed - not a big deal, but getting a replacement has proved a bit of a faff. Car is booked in for replacement soon. Overall, car has been rock solid and decent to drive. Minor irritation is the driver assistance stuff, as you say, but I'm very pleased with my car. I've seen 140kw charging speed briefly on mine........
That’s great Chris, pleased to hear you’re enjoying the car despite the locking issue. It seems any replacement parts are like unicorns for the time being. I’ve also seen a few 140kW speeds, that’s awesome!
Driver assistance makes me want to sell mine. Bloody dangerous.
@@rogerwilson6367 you have made this comment on all the MG4 videos. That function has now been unpgraded.
@@nordic5490 I made that comment on every video I could find....intentionally, before someone gets killed. When you say it's been upgraded, does that mean it stays off when I switch it off?
These MG cars are looking great an great value for money,mg4 looks nice but not ready for electric car yet, i do like the new facelifted 2023/2024 mg hs trophy ,looks lovely in grey or black with the red leather interior, definitely one i might get in a few years, at present im enjoying my diesel jeep renegade ive had for 4 months, great video greetings from Scotland 😁👍🏴
I’m looking to upgrade my Ioniq 28kw which can do 100motorway miles in the winter and 120 in the summer. I do get 6miles perkWh in the summer with mixed driving and the MG looks like a good replacement although I can charge 10-80% in 17mins in my Ioniq as the charge curve is so flat. I’m also torn between a mid £20k Tesla M3 and MG4, Great review and keep them coming.
The 38kwh Ioniq will do 200 miles mixed driving in summer 180 miles motorway @ 70 if you can live with 45kw charging 10-80% 40 minutes summer 55 minutes in winter and a range of 135 miles in snow -1°c on motorway @ 63mph in winter with heating at 18°c
Very informative from a real owner
Hi Stuart, Thank you for your honest and in-depth review. This is one of 3 cars we are looking at for our first family EV car, the other two are the MG ZS and the Kia Niro (first edition) so this review was very helpful to me. Thank you for taking the time to explain the pros and cons of this MG4.
Are you ualso looking at the mg5? Just testdrived the 5 and ZS, both are very similair in price, the zs trunk looks deeper and larger but is actually a little smaller. Heard the zs can feel a little swirly in corners, though I haven't experienced that in my testdrive.
The MG4 also fits 3 children car seats in the rear. Easier than our ford Kuga non-ev.
MG has updated the specs in Germany, the LFP battery is quoted now at 88kW. The NMC battery is now quoted at 140kw. 140kW has been reported on the NMC battery before the refresh on the website so I assume that the LFP won't achieve more than 88kW, which is in line with your findings.
I’m pleased to hear MG are revising their marketing in Germany in line with my testing. 140kW is fantastic speeds for the NMC models, I think a minimum of 125kW should be the target for all EVs now
I'm picking up my standard range in germany this week. Somehow it's a little disappointing that the figures have been changed from what was advertised. Still looking forward to our first ev though.
@@MythricCorlem Don't be, the peak numbers are absolutely meaningless. It doesn't really matter if the car charges with 117kW or 88kW if the 10-80% time is the same. Either you'll receive atrocious speeds from around 55% to 80% (117kW scenario) or have a flatter charging curve with good speeds throughout (88kW scenario) or even beyond the 80% mark.
My MG4 is coming in a few months as well, but I'm coming from a Zoe so after two and a half years, 63.000km of 46kW until 50% even the 88kW look juicy to me by comparison lol.
Have fun with your MG! I'm also very excited for mine!
@@stuart_thomas As I've said to the other commenter, peak speeds aren't really meaningful. I believe a charging time of less than 25 minutes 10-80% should be the norm in this day and age. Even if the car would charge with 250kW it would do so for a few moments after which the speed will plummet like the 2008 stock market. I'd rather have something like 100kW with a flatter curve, because I'll get good speeds even outside of Ionity or other HPC's. Efficiency is also very important, a factor which ultimately led me to the MG4 was that it is almost identical to my Zoe efficiency-wise.
Excellent in-depth review, thanks for this I'm really looking at buying one of these MG4s
Glad I could help
Thanks for the video. Really useful as we are looking at going EV in the next couple of years and the MG4 is on the list - as is the MG5 estate.😃
I have the Mg5 trophy lovely really nice x jaguar xj8 driver so that’s saying something .
I had mine for 8 months now no problem at all I love it
Thank you for the video and it gave me good confidence, I have booked a MG 4 Trophy Long Range one and I am waiting for the delivery.
Thank you, Stuart, for the good video, and the people who have commented below on their love of this car, I am looking in future to get an EV and the MG will certainly be on my list. My only issue with EV cars is not the Cars (well the prices do come have a bearing) but the charging infrastructure, from what I have viewed, you need a multitude of apps to pay, and they all see flakey?
Thanks for the feedback, it’s greatly appreciated. Try not to be put off by charging infrastructure, it’s getting better all the time and I actually only use one app/card for everything now (Electroverse). There’s some great EVs out there especially in the used market. I’ve driven 10 used EVs for my ‘used’ series which I’m desperately trying to finish editing which are fantastic. Thanks again 👍
Thank you for your informative videos. Have just put my deposit down and picking up the same vehicle next week. Its called Excite 51 in Australia. Shouldn't have the low temp issues as I live in tropical Queensland.
That is awesome!
Had a trophy for a couple months. For the money well competitors are in trouble with just a bit more work this would be truly great platform. Even now it’s blowing them away on what you get for your money. Seats could improve. Put back wiper back. Just a few tweaks for a like £3k extra you would have something special here. The aerodynamics are stunning for a car like this. Can tell the U.K. designed it it’s not very Chinese at all! It’s how we should be doing cars ourselves. My God we are capable…look.
When you shot this excellent video, the MG 4 was sold in China for nearly a year. There is no excuse for deceiving charging powers (at MG and other brands) and dashboard quality issues, except the price tag
Love these videos, keep them coming 👍
I can see why MG don’t want you to permanently disable the safety systems, but they should definitely let us save our preferred settings
Frustrating that the LFP battery cannot get near to that max charge rate, I have the NMC battery and it actually beats the advertised 135kW max - I saw 139.2kW
Glad you are still enjoying your car, I love mine too
Thanks billy. The LR models are little charging beasts. The saving grace is a good charging curve on the SR, having said that, if you’re stopping long enough to charge for than 50% plus, you’re probably going to grab a coffee anyway.
made in china
@@fffwe3876 like BMWs, Teslas, Minis, Volvos, Polestars… Not really sure what your point is
yeah save preferences would be 100% more ideal. i believe its part of the safety standards thing tho. eg. it gives higher rating for defaulting safety systems to on. nvm if they're no good...
Thank you for this beautifull insight. I agree great car on this pricepoint. I love the LFP, and 7kW charging on solar. No meed for something else. As temperatures rise saw low consumption resulting on an estimated range on GOM 411km. Better than expected. Charging speed is once reported by my son above 100kW after software update of charger and heavy top speed driving.
my essence64 has seen 148 kw charging speed
I like that you have your climate control buttons as a “widget” on the home screen the trophy version doesnt. Ill have a look if I can change that
Really enjoyed this video, I love your styling of the review, very detailed visuals and professional analysis of your experiences. I'm looking to secure one of these cars in the next month or two as it remains outstanding value and really does tick the boxes when weighing up my leasing options. You've given me some excellent pointers to make the most of the experience as and when I receive the car. Thanks so much Stuart - subbed!
Thanks Steve, I appreciate the great feedback. I hope you enjoy your MG4 as much as I do👍
@Stuart Thomas thank you, you're a beta tester and I'm very happy tha these cars seems very strong ! In ten years, I'll be sure about their reliability !
I think they’ll fair well if mine is anything to go by. There’s many in the wild now with much higher mileage
I too really want to see what an average mileage one will look like in 10 years time, especially the fabric seats ! Fingers crossed no rust 🤞
I've been looking for an honest review for this car from someone who owns it, you're damn great in explaining pros and cons including the summary everything is straight to the point every single second is relatively informative, I still dont know much about EV but if im planning to get this car soon, thanks to you I found the answers that I've been looking for
Honestly it is a 50/50. Quality Control is bad and some of the cars have very odd software issues and just general build quality issuess. Make sure you have a dealer with a good service that can fix these in case you get a bad example.
Glad it was of help to you ☺️
Enjoying your reports Stuart. Very informative and succinct.
Many thanks Ron, much appreciated 👍
Fair play, I could not do with all the hassle of charging and planning journeys.
Thanks, Stuart. And hello! Found your channel today, and subscribed. 🙂👍
MG is definitely on my shopping list🔥👍
What a superb video!!! You should be reviewing other marques. I had a 2019 Model 3 SR+ and the range was never an issue. One Warm day last year on a trip to my brothers I got an astonishing 130wh per mile. That's an SR+ doing a theoretical 384 miles. I found the Tesla range was consistently conservative and when doing distances, with everything warming up over the miles, range was always better than shown. I would even get somewhere with say 48% and when I got back to the car and hour later it had ticked up to 52% because the ambient temp had warmed. And my SR+ was sold on with just 18k miles and mint (it was a white one early delivery with front fogs an all round heated seats) for "only" £24,600. Now that's a 320hp rear wheel drive sports saloon that is a bargain.
Getting my blue MG4 in 6 weeks time, cannot wait to drive it : )
I really wish they offered the Trophy trim level with every battery option. Also, I wonder how many of the Trophy upgrades could be retrofitted and if anyone is actually doing this? I know lots of people are importing accessories from China, but I'm talking actual things like the 360 degree cameras or the wireless charger.
For me, I am not interested in long range, extended range or dual motors. Like you, the standard range would suffice (heck I'd probably make do with an even smaller battery option as long as it retains fast charging) but that doesn't mean people want to miss out on the extra toys.
A positive review and I loved test driving the Trophy version.
What car rates it as the 2nd worst reliable car & I am seeing a lot of negative user reviews.
MG also seem to not stand over the 7 year review according to many people who have bought this model.
These MGs seem like great value EVs with nice handling, a good performance compromise, safety and attractive looks-probably the best available EV choice currently for average commuters. BTW, I noticed 3 bubbles at 9:40 . Does MG state the root cause? Most importantly it looks like you’re getting excellent after-sales customer support from MG which is a really welcome critical purchasing factor.
Replacement installed now - local MG took great care of the situation
I live this review, it is nicely paced for disabled people and it's interesting and professional. Thank you very much!
I would wait for facelifted and upgraded version of this car
Not coming soon.. 2025 models looks the same
I own a Tesla mod 3 and it’s amazing, I know three people with the MG 4 and two used to be VW owners , they ❤️ their MG 4 😊
“All cars come with defects”. I’ve had several new cars, a Ford Focus, two Honda Civics and currently a Volvo XC 40……ZERO DEFECTS on delivery and no defects or warranty claims. The Volvo is still under warranty.
Love the car. The girl at the McDonalds drive thru today poked her head out and said "wow, I've never seen a car like it! It's beautiful!"
I have two cons other than what you mentioned (which were spot on):
1. The volume from your phone when you're listening to a podcast or music means you have to pump the volume close to max. Then when you start again the radio deafens you.
2. My biggest bugbear: the regen is nerfed. If you let go of the pedal you'll get -17 max. Press the brake and it'll go to -25. That means that the "brake" is partially unused regen. As someone that drives pretty much without brakes and hasn't even tried any other setting that max regen, this is incredibly frustrating. One foot driving is one of the absolute joys of an EV, why nerf this awesomeness?? Grr.
No one pedal driving in a Porsch ev.
What colour is yours?
@olajuyigbesegun2049 black
Thanks the reviews - I ordered a SE Long Range today and candid reviews like this certainly helped shape my decision 👍🏽
I'm getting the same car soon. Looking forward 😊
We have only ONE problem with the MG4. I cannot get hold of a Towbar for the car. It was a condition of our purchase that one would be available 'soon', that soon is now 6 months with no supply date in sight.
Someone on the MG4 fb groups has fitted one
@@stuart_thomas I wonder where it came from. MG UK are currently denying that one can even be fitted!
I think it was a 3rd party installation
OMG. Fantastic to hear all the buttons and switches are still working fine. After 6 months. And outside has also no scratches. Amazing! In this day and age. To have literally no scratches after 6 months. Gobsmacked. And the wing mirrors are also still looking as good as new. After 6 months. It beggars belief!
And they still are at 12 months but a video in full with be out shortly 👍
I’ve got a 2020 MG ZS Ev ,,, it’s been a great car so far ,, but now I’m thinking should I upgrade to the MG4 ?
It's odd because before EVs the knock on LiFePO4 was certainly not power - it was just weight. In fact they normally outperformed most NMC cells with brands like A123 consistently achieving 10C charge and discharge curves with little affect on longevity or capacity. They had a much lower internal resistance than most NMC cells - some high power cell excepted.
10C wow! Weight is definitely an issue. I know the MG4 SE SE and the LR weight more or less the same. I think software and how it handles the LFP has come on a long way.
Stuart,
Thankyou for your posts . An intelligent appraisal of a groundbreaking vehicle. Like you we have owned ours now for six months.
Agree totally with other contributors that the self drive software which cannot be set and saved (Please MG sort this out) is a major
Bind. But hey once you have got used to resetting every time it becomes second nature. I wish we could have afforded the LR version
But we skinted ourselves ( pensioners) to buy the car😅. Yes got the bent under tray also . After another nag to the dealers … yep on back order and MG
Are sorting it . I think if I understood correctly they have now modified this component (just needed another bolt under the centre where unsupported,
basically a bit skimped ? )
It is so nice to drive and getting back in our ICE car is showing how primitive it all is. I certainly have not missed stuffing £100 diesel into the tank
every Few weeks. Trying to stop the missus worrying about range has been tricky . but the ad hoc development of charge points where the greedy blighters are ripping off for
80p per kWh is taking the p- I am sure you will agree. Not helpful . She was apprehensive initially but I am picking up better vibes from her now,
She obviously likes the driving experience.🤞
Just one question .Are there cheaper alternatives to the little widget you demonstrated
To use the infotainment system to play recorded music?
Thanks again keep up the good work .
Hi John thanks for taking time to write this fantastic comment. I have to say the cost of public charging is a bit of an issue on some of the networks but there are some which are more realistic, even Tesla on some are only charging a little over 50p p/kW.
There are alternatives for wireless multimedia. The company I reviewed the device for are sending me an alternative more affordable version so keep an eye out for that one. I have seen a few people in the comments for that video mention some more affordable units worth considering.
Many thanks again 👍
I ordered a long range Trophy last week.
I find my new MG 4 Trophy very irritating. After moving from a well sorted KIA I now have to put up with hopeless cruise control (I have a Ford Transit van with much better sorted and smoother adaptive cruise control and that's a 2017 model which I bought new). The software or touch screen won't react to first touch so I constantly have to poke at the screen which is annoying as it means taking your eyes off the road for too long. The lane keep assist is frightening, tugging the steering wheel from your hands so violently you think your going to steer into the on coming traffic!! I have an app on the phone telling me to plug the car in when I want it to charge but the car is already chrging. It also tells me the charging is ongoing when it has actually achieved the 80% I set of it. Charging has twice switched off during the night leaving me with a much reduced range in the morning. On the up side I like th colour, volcano orange. There are up sides to owning this heap of ****. Drive is smooth (if you don't use cruise control) and quiet. Acceleration to pass something slow is amazing. I recommend you buy the SE long range as, with the trophy, you're paying extra for things that don't work that well so you eventually just give up useing them. Oh, and someone's comment on reversing visibility. The all around camera on the Trophy is another good addition 😁
That is a shock, what with Made in China being a mark of top quality and all.
Agree with you on the Lane Assist but cruse control works great on my model. I’ve had no issues with the charging both at home & using a supercharging station. No glitches with the screen either? My MG4 is the Icon X model as I reside in Thailand.
Australia is getting the AWD version soon . Looking forward to it. Might even sell my i30n for it
That MG4 AWD will arguably be the first proper "hot hatch" EV! Although it might even be a bit too fast to be just called a hatchback, given how fast EV can accelerate these days.
Good video as usual, Stuart. You've had yours for 6 months. We've had ours on ORDER for 6 months and still no nearer to actually getting it, our dealer says he knows nothing and cannot see any order status in his IT system, and MG (España) do not answer any of my emails. So today visited another MG dealer near Valencia and he said the same that he and none of the dealers can look up the order status. Yet he has more than 20 MG4's for sale, (none of a colour that we would be interested in) not one has been ordered so they can produce the cars for sale but cannot be bothered to produce the cars that have been ordered and paid for. Must be honest I am now starting to to relook at other cars and when i find one, will be cancelling our order and advising all to avoid MG in spain at all costs, especially as they do not reply to my emails . 🤬
Something off with your Dealer or supply chain. Here in the UK my SE LR was on order for barely a month before I took delivery!
Sorry to hear that Ian. It’s rubbish when it’s out of your ha ds
@@squareeyz Yep I know. People have ordered in Germany, France, UK and ireland and their dealers can tell them via their IT system the status of the order i.e if has a build slot, has been built, waiting for transport, is on a boat, etc. Yet here in Spain the dealers are telling us they cannot. I find that very, very, very difficult to believe that they do not have access to the same IT system. Plus the fact that MG España do not reply to any email whatsoever. Well I know that the Spanish motortrade has one of the worse reputation for dishonesty in all Europe but Ive never bought from one here so have no personal experience until NOW!
@@stuart_thomas Even if they would reply and tell me the status would be an advance, but to ignore you when you have paid is not acceptable and to me does not bode well for the future if you have one and have a problem. I have a friend, in the UK, who has just told me (he ordered the exact same colour trophy version as us 4 days before us, end of October 22) and he has been told it was built some 2 weeks ago and is now on a boat. So one would imagine that the bodywork etc as its the same colour would have been built at the same time, yet here they for some reason refuse to tell me anything or just ignore you.
Not a great way to handle your customers and they should at least try and manage your expectations (if they can I guess?).
Damn that's one good looking motor. Had one parked next to my ID3 and i was impressed
One thing I haven't really heard much about in most reviews is software support.
How many software updates - if any - did you receive since owning this car?
... And if you did receive any, what issues did they address?
Thanks.
Hi thanks for tuning in. As mentioned in the video I’ve only ever had one update which was for a safety advisory.
@@stuart_thomas thanks, must have missed that comment.
Nice video! Thx! I want to buy one with same lfp. I think this is a best offer nowadays in Europe.👌
Many thanks for tuning in. It’s a great offer and it charges as fast as other EVs like the Kona and Niro. LFP and good optimisation is the way forward unless you want supercar performance.
@@stuart_thomas Yeah. like a cellphones.. the question is what is the real value.. 1000 hp..or reasonable cost of the trafic. I have a pv system, so I can generate some electricity into fuel, but oil well i didn't have..😃
I have the mg4 trophy LR and it charged easily up to 140kw no problem in vinter I just needed the preheater, in batteri menu.
Charges like a beast! Even at higher state of charge.
Nice honest review. You are not looking for anything special in the car. So you have a realistic view for the price point.
Everything about the car is good, but this would bring it to the next level:
1: HUD
2: Mobile app redone. Basically it actually works
3: MG Pilot needs to be as good as HDA 2 (Kia/Hyundai) or Travel Assist (VE) semi autonomous systems.
Even for an extra 5k I would pay it if it had this
It’s a good shout for upgrades. Unfortunately, I don’t see them coming soon as MG just isn’t in that place right now, they’ve very much in that infancy and trying to maintain a ‘value’ brand and get things right. Once they have established a solid software experience then I’m sure they will look to do more.
Great suggestions
Hello I'm loving the videos . Could you make a video , showing the prices to charge at home and on the road ?
Compares to a diesel car , I got a diesel car and would love to change to an MG4 , but I think the range for price compare to diesel to charging on the road may be the same price and not be convenient to pay more just to be eletric.
Thank you .
Thanks for your comment and support. It’s very difficult to compare prices as there’s so many different tariffs and prices for both home and public charging. Capped charging at home is 30p per/kWh so 30p x kWh. My home tariff is 7.5p per/kWh. Public charging is difficult. I’ve seen it as little as 30p with a subscription up to £1 p/kWh with a card reader. Best thing I can suggest is to use apps like Zapmap to check charger rates in advance before you use them. Home charging will always be much better for the £. It also depending on your use case. How many miles do you drive a week etc
thanks for the review, helpful one!
My iPhone is Chinese. I would definitely have an MG 4 😊
Great overview of pros and cons of the MG4. Thanks for sharing.
Surprised there's no mention of the reduction gearbox breather oil leak Stuart.
Yup me too. Mine had a new breather fitted and now, 2 months later, is leaking again.
My car has (fingers crossed) not suffered with this issue.
In the winter here it goes bellow -5°C on regularly basis but also sometimes it goes to -15° to -20°C. i guess I will need to go inside the car to start the preheating of the battery and of the interior. They didn't fix it yet? Because from what I see the application is not working right. That worked just fine with my old sold Dacia Spring. Thanks
I would have taken money off for the bubbles on the dashboard.
Nice show, really informative.
Do you have the new software? What about intrusive LKA? Thanks
Great video - well presented and explained - Thankyou.
Glad it was helpful!
Can you say if there is a lot of road noise or is it generally quite acceptable, thanks for your comments. Roger
Great update. Would you still recommend this car, 9 months later?
Thanks Stuart, really enjoy following your MG4 experience. How many miles have you covered in the car so far? You did say at the start you would talk about the dealership experience....are they responding to the fixes you are waiting for?...do they keep you in the picture? A new MG dealership just opened 60 km north of me in Poitiers so my Hyundai Ioniq owning friend and I will be making a visit soon to see how they are doing and maybe have a go in one. I haven't seen one on the road here in France yet but the French stats say they have shifted a couple of thousand in the past 2 months. We just got back from a 1,750 km road trip to see family in Switzerland...and I can report that rapid charging en route here is a lot better than it was 4 years ago when we got the e-Niro, were you ever to head this way on vacation you shouldn't have any problems charging the MG.
Thanks for the update on charging I’m heading to Geneva soon but flying on this occasion with a petrol hire car.
In total 4700 miles and still going strong.
Dealership experience is very much what I expect and is very much in line with most in the UK I’ve dealt with, very limited contact and in most cases you need to chase for updates. The only saving grace is all my warranty issues are now carried out by my local MG instead of the one I purchased it from.
You should definitely give one a drive.👍
How is the heating in cold weather? Wondering how potent the heating element is and is there a heat pump? Here in Finland this is important in winter when you have to melt frost from windows in the morning.
No heat pump in our versions. However, never had issues in uk winter -7 coldest but I’m sure much colder where I are
Trying to decide on this over a few others, ie VW ID3, Citroen eC4. I’m curious though, what’s the sound system quality like?
All very well, but, how many years would you expect to hve in service 10 yrs? And then a second hand one how many yrs would one get out of one?
Sorry, not sure I understand your question. Do you mean range?
I have found that some driving settings do not persist from one drive to another, like lane keep assist or eco drive mode. I have to set these each time I drive the car, even in custom mode, regen I have mapped to steering controls so I can adjust that while I drive. Shame otherwise excellent car.
Unfortunately you can’t map regen to the steering controls in the SE. However, even remembering how you last drove the car would be a good half-way house.
I came from a Renault Zoe, and although the MG4 is way superior, it had a dedicated ECO button. So handy to flick between driving profiles depending on driving conditions, and the amount of energy I had left. It would be great if the software could support changing performance profile thru one of the star buttons.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that car manufacturers are not allowed to have Eco mode as a default setting in EVs, since energy consumption / driving range (WLTP) is not measured in Eco mode. The default driving mode has to be the mode in which the energy consumption / driving range was measured.
Does the back wheels look like they are mounted on a rear axle that is too narrow?
"Hey guys" , the scourge of every RUclips video and Harvester restaurant.
HI Stuart, do you have one pedal driving on the SE? I heard that it’s only available on the Trophy model? Thanks
Real world reports so valuable
Thanks for review, i have i4, looking for an ev for wife, this looks cool
Good choice!
One thing I'd really love to know, and it is something that can really irritate me in new cars.
Some new cars have AV systems which dont "remember" what the last used audio input was, and just default to the radio each time you start the car. Ie, you get in your car, plug your iphone in to use carplay, and the car plays the FM radio until you select "carplay". Does this car do that?
Hi there, my vehicle automatically loads car play once it’s detected
What's the rear visibility like? The small rear window puts me off slightly, but if the rear camera is good enough, and the parking sensors do their job I suspose it's not a huge issue?
Did you try a aftermarket review camera as well? if you have any luck please let the viewers know.
I haven’t but it’s on the cards
Fantastic video 😊
We've just got a trophy. I like the interior except for the part leather seats.
However the car is hilariously easy to over steer. So it's brilliant obviously.
How is the road noise ?? I have an MG HS-PHEV and I find the road noise on electric only is noticeable. I drove a BYD Atto and it was noticeably quieter. However I really like my MG HS-PHEV apart from the road noise
I’ve driven a lot of EVs and MG4 is one of the quietest
Pick my new MG4 Long range trophy in black on monday and moving from a 2021 vw t-roc that i absolutely hate and the first time i drove the mg it was a big win! Roll on monday! Bought a type 2 charging cable to plug into my buildings free charging of 2 hours a day!
Thanks 👍 nice genuine review 👍
How do you feel about Teslas bringing out a basic model for £25k ? Would it make you sell the MG? Curious
I've got one of these on loan while my VW I.D3 is having its batteries replaced!! (2 years old) and while using android auto it would only detect my voice while stationary it was driving me mad but finally they seem to have fixed it with an update, seemed so stupid to have a hands free system that didnt work while driving
Can you use Tesla superchargers to charge the MG4?
I've got the same car and model and have issues with the 'lane assist' pulling me off the road while driving straight and a 'loud turbine sound' coming from the car's hood. The car also has difficulty censoring its surroundings e.g. lane lines, cars, and road signs. MG did not recognize these as defects but fixed two other defects I had i.e. rust on MG front logo/sign and battery issue. I'm not satisfied with the purchase because of these issues and because IMO the standard model is very dry, with few features, a crappy app, and bad software design
Hi Stuart I have had my MG4 2 month now and I have load noice from the AC pump ,, wonderd if you have hade the sam issue or if you have heard about this problem ?,,,, thanks for you great videos,, have a nice day
Hi Johnny, is it like a ticking sound?
@@stuart_thomas Hi Stuart thanks for your replay,, the sound is a ticking sound from the AC pump. Have you heard or had the same experiens ?
I hear it all the time. At least I know it's working 😂😉
@@stuart_thomas 😂😂
Very interesting video; thanks!
How is the navigation or the Interface of Android Auto or Apple car play ? ... I owned a MG before, and had heavy lags in navi, and missed my exits quiet often ...
12:40 MG4 I am looking at with LFP has 88kW charge limit and one with bigger battery has 140kW, so it seems about right. Are ones sold in UK advertised to have 140 for LFP?
Standard range (LFP only) is 88kW. SE LR/Trophy/X-Power (all long range) and Extended Range are 140kW
What’s the effect on sudden high voltage issue or if car is stored for long time
