Had MG4 for 3 months 2,000 km. Love one pedal driving. Cost of running ZERO as I get 3 hrs of free electrons at night. The 51 Excite comes with LFP, rear wiper, reversing camara, rear grab handles, outside temp, opd. Have installed a 63a change over switch so can power whole house via V2L, and have done so twice when power cut. Oh and it only cost me £19,300 here in NZ with Govt EV rebate.
The scratching on the inside door trims is easy to solve mix a little black shoe polish with a liquid dash restoration cleaner and gently rub over the scratching and then wipe over with a cloth job done 😊
Thanks for this Stuart. The MG4 is doing really well here in France too, seeing a lot more of them around than I expected. I'm over 90,000 km now on the Kia e-Niro and will be doing my 5 year report in March 2024. 😊
That’s great to hear and I’m pleased to hear the e-Niro is marching on. I did think of you and your e-Niro while driving through france. I look forward to your review in 2024 ☺️
@@stuart_thomas Hey! thanks Stuart. Funny thing is that when I see a white MG4 here (and I have seen a few) I think 'Stuart's car!'...We're off to the UK on 19th and will be driving back from my sister's place in Shropshire on 23rd, coming down the M5...is that anywhere near you? I guess you're busy at work..😊
On my 2nd trophy long range. The 1st had an issue with air con gas and the dumping of such gas 4 times in 2 months . The 2nd car I've had for 3 months is superb. Subtle changes ie the bigger wheels and easier to use screen and climate screen are great. As it stands I would recommend this car to anybody. Great content thanks very much.
I've had much worse. The biggest problem was the dealer who had the car 6 out of 8 weeks saying they were waiting for a response from technical support. After calling mg directly I found out they were not being truthful and so started the proceedings to back the car. Just done over 700 miles round trip and the only complaint I have is with public charging network. Over priced and inaccurate speeds. Thanks for the content again.
@@jonnyluff33Do you think a Trophy model for 22k with under 5k mileage is a worthwhile deal, as that seems to be the value now? I do regular 300 mile journeys. Is the screen different in the Trophy than the SE? If driving long distances on the M1, would the lane keep assist keep you in lane, as I hear lots of people complaining about it
@@mjcamp01 to be honest long journeys are the enemy of ev`s but the driving experience is worth it for me. The lane assist is annoying and i hope MG make it possible to leave turned off. the screen in the late 23 plate cars is a little different and a bit laggy but acceptable at the price point. For me the worse thing about owning an ev is the price of public charging compared to home charging. I find it as expensive as running a petrol car with a large old engine.
I have had my SE LR now for 5 months and I love it. I also had a warped undertray, that got replaced eventually. The Lane Kill Assist is absolutely awful, but it’s no trouble just turning it off, simple. The only big problem I am having, and it’s a major problem, is that people at work are now getting the same car 🙄
I've not got an EV yet, hopefully this year. When I test drove the MG4 I instantly thought this is going to be as popular as Escorts/Fiesta back in the day. The Xpower is definitely going to be the boy racer car of choice when they are 2 or 3 years older and cheaper.
My partner just got the long range version, it works great, charges very quickly and reliably... The main issue is that range drops quite fast as soon as you go over 110 km/h. At 130 km/h power usage went all the way up to 25 kWh/100 km. This is a much sharper increase than on a Tesla Model 3... Still, this is a really great car. One piece of advice for people crossing France, look for Lidl supermarkets, a lot of them have 150kW chargers a the low price of €0.40 per kWh
@@pauls8456 well, I guess you'd use less even if it's not a speed at which we usually travel, my guess would be 16 to 17 kWh for 100 km, giving you a range of around 350 km (instead of the promised 450 km WLTP for that model). As for the cost of electricity, it varies a lot. For instance in the north of Paris, you can do a full recharge overnight for 12€, and the IECharge network only charges 30 cents per kWh, and in fact 25 until the end of the year. Lidl is also cheap at 39 cent per kWh and so is Tesla if you charge off-peak. For Ionity you can get a big discount for a 7€ monthly fee but some motorway operators charge considerably more, up to 80 cents per kWh. So if you drive fast and charge on the 'wrong' charger, you could end up paying more than you would have with a modern diesel car on a long journey. This fact will please the anti EV loby but to me it says more "don't by an EV that looks like a brick, make sure you get something efficient). In that respect the MG4 is OK but could be better... And, yes, Teslas are much better at that game if you can afford one
We've had our SR for a year now, and like you, I intend keeping it. I bought it specifically for LFP and VTL. VTL is priceless in the event of a power cut, only had one this year and it provides all the essential power you need (with some juggling) to cook, refrigerate, tv, broadband, lights etc. insurance isn't too bad, I hope to underwriters can distinguish the different risk of LFP to that of NCM battery chemistry.
Great to hear someone else value the V2L and that it’s been a great back for your home energy. I haven’t considered it for home use but have used it for power tools and lights etc
We bought an SE long range mid July which came with a rear wiper but no outside temperature reading. I appreciate it’s early days but I love this car and more importantly my wife does, she wouldn’t have the Trophy model because being in our early seventies she said ‘we are not having a car with boy racer spoilers parked on the drive’. I read a lot of ev reviews and to be honest I switch off when they say things like only £35k and also the cars are full of tech that will never be used. I watched your videos and others on the MG4 and I have to say the car has more than lived up to my expectations.
Great to hear it Graham. It’s nice to hear positive feedback about the car, social media seems to be full of negativity. It has its place but this is a great car. Onwards and upwards
External temperature readout was lost due to a bug in the R16 software, which has been out since the spring. The next version, R21, didn't restore it. The most recent version, R33, does restore it, but not many people have had that applied.
A balanced, informative review Stuart. I’ve watched a number of your reviews, and they contributed to me buying a Trophy model in July this year. Have had a software update, as lost radio connection completely, but since update appears to be fine. They are great to drive like you say, and running costs with home charging on cheap overnight tariffs are a big plus point. I estimate about £10 for 250+ miles. It is important to keep the updates going, as this provides a buyer like myself, who holds on to a vehicle for a few years, with a long term evaluation.
I really appreciate your feedback and thanks for your time invested in watching my videos, I’m pleased to hear they have been of help to you (and others). Glad to hear you have your radio issue sorted. I know many say the software has its issues, and it has, but MG across all specs of MG4 have pushed out multiple updates now which shows they are trying to resolve issues and improve the experience. £10 looks about spot on, I think I can agree with that from my own experience. It’s saved our family £100s. I wish i could have accurately addressed how much in the video but there’s been so many changes in electricity and I can’t separate EV charging from daily usage. I intend to keep the videos coming in 2023/24 and hopefully get my hands on some more MG vehicles.
Informative review covering the relevant points of ownership. I like your approach as you’ve gone for the factual approach rather than attention grabbing titles and drama, unlike other EV based channels.
Hi Stuart, thank you so much for your honest content. Im looking into getting a 51 in Australia and your thorough insight into the car ownership, even through wareanty issues has been so invaluable. Thanks again from Australia ✌️
Thanks for the review. I have a Trophy just coming to a year old now, nudging 10,000 miles. My experience is very similar to yours. Had a faulty passenger door handle - it took a bit of time, but the handle was replaced under warranty. No other issues - although I have asked the dealer to adjust the headlights in the forthcoming service. The longer range battery is still my preference, as I find it more convenient for long trips. I agree there are a few competitors for the Trophy and extended range now. I think the Volvo EX30 looks interesting.... Happy to stick with the MG for now though 🙂
Congrats on your upcoming year of ownership. Glad you got your warranty repairs sorted too. EX30 looks fantastic, it’s the only car which looks as good as an MG4👍
Nice review. Thanks from Madrid. I’ll receive my new MG4 in a couple weeks and I can’t wait. I spend all my time watching MG4 videos in RUclips 😂. Your review reinforces my in my decision of buying this car. I wish you keep enjoying your car for a very long time. 👊🏽
Great video with real life EV appraisal, content creators like you will help promote EV to more potential EV motorists, well done. We are all EV household as well with a Model 3 SR & Kia E-Niro 64KWh 4+. Wouldn’t/ Couldn’t go back to ICE cars now as we enjoy the instant Torque, silent drivetrain and amazing economy
I have the excite SR version with the same colour like yours less than a month. After almost 1000 kilometres I have to say that the car is superb 👌. I don’t have any issues at all except a tiny small panel gap in the front but I will fix it soon. The car is very fast even with the eco settings enabled. The front collision system is absolutely amazing I had my first triggered. I think there is not any competition on that range of money for sure even if you raise it by 5 or 10K. The interior space is very good for tall people.
@@HooverLux I thought you wanted to say 6 years and 120,000 miles without an issue, that would be something to celebrate. 6 weeks and 1,200 miles sounds like you were taking da pizzas.
@@z00h Just saying that we’ve done some miles and love the car so far, we’ve had no issues with the undertray or the dashboard and doesn’t look like this will be an issue as it’s the new model updates. I’m really enjoying driving it so far.
Thanks for the video. I’m looking at getting one of these for my daughter. Good review. Looks like you might live just around the corner from me as i recognise the canal bridge and the lanes.
Great review. Not very high mileage but good to see it's done you good for your family. I was considering the ZS EV a bit more with two daughters and a dog included. Glad to see your POV as a person that will keep the car long term.
As someone who was originally going for a ZS with the 4 not even being on my radar because I thought it was too small. When I saw them both at the dealer and test driven both, the 4 seems way more roomy than the ZS is. The ZS felt very cramped, its also less wide so makes sense.
Great review, many thanks. I bought my MG4 SE last Feb 2023, (traded in my MG5 LR) and have not been disappointed. Great car, fun to drive, efficient and comfortable. I wondered about the longer range model but as I would only do a handful of 200+ miles trips a year I am happy with this model. I agree with the default settings on start up having to adjust every time is a chore but you do get used to doing it. The only other issue Ive had is not starting first thing, some sort of service code came up but was ok when powered off and on again, this has happened twice I think and will be sure to mention this when I get its first service next month. The MG5 was fine apart from faffing around with preheating the cabin in winter, plus the anti dazzle mirror didnt seem to be effective, even after I had it replaced. The remote app for the MG4 is great, havent used the V2L in anger but have tried it out to boil a kettle and works fine. Keep up the good work :-)
Hi. New to your channel, here's some feedback if you're interested: When I watch a video longer than 10 minutes, I like it when the RUclipsr adds chapters to the video using timestamps. This way, if I'm only interested in what you have to say about battery life for example, I can immediately jump to that and watch the conclusion. Good video anyway, good luck with your channel.
Thanks for another great video Stuart. Your previous 1 month and 6 month reviews certainly played a part in my ordering a MG 4 Standard range (it has not yet arrived). That being said, I just recently test drove the new Tesla Model 3 because I have some worries regarding the range of the MG 4 (I only need the longer range for 4-6 trips a year), the current state of the infotainment system and MG Pilot and like the idea of having the Tesla’s cameras. I did come away quite impressed with the Model 3. As an owner of both cars I would appreciate your input regarding this choice. Either car will be the only car we have and both are within our means though the Tesla just barely so😅.
Thanks for the great feedback and I’m pleased to hear my videos were some help to you. Having done many big trips and daily used both, the model 3 is far superior, it just does many things so much better, route planning and the SC network alone is worth its weight in gold, regular improvements to software etc. Having said that my M3 is a 2020 fremont model and isn’t a great example, the new refresh standard model with LFP looks fantastic (if you don’t mind no storks) and apparently is even more comfort focussed which is a big ✅ previous ones have stiff suspension which is ok for motorways and A-roads but not for uk pot holed roads. I am aware though, Tesla parts/repairs aren’t cheap, so if you did consider a second hand one perhaps make sure you have plenty of warranty or at least get and extended one. We’ve had a many parts replaced on ours which were under warranty but out of it would be expensive. You may also want to consider get an insurance quote too as premiums have surged in 2023/24. If route planning and big trips aren’t your thing the MG4 is a great alternative, IMO, MG4 SE SR or X-power is the only ones I’d consider as for post £33k you can get your hands on some great EVs. There’s many under a year old you can get for a bargain like ioniq 5 or even a model3/Y. Volvo XC30 looks promising too which I believe will start at £33k. I hope that’s ok help?
Thanks for the reply! Lots of great information to take into account before we make any final decision (we hadn’t thought about the possible difference in insurance costs for example). Very much appreciated! Thanks again and keep up the great work.
I have the same car but in black. I echo all you have said but will be taking a look at the under tray and the dashboard top as my car is now due for a first service. I haven't yet been back to the dealership for faults but initially for other reasons. The dealership I chose hasn't given me the excellent experience you seem to have had. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for tuning in and commenting. Always consider an alternative dealership if you’re not happy with service and it’s not geographically out of reach. I actually purchased my MG4 from a different dealership. Warped under tray was definitely an issue with the earlier models so worth checking out prior to your first service. Many thanks
@@stuart_thomas Agreed. I have a warped undertray although it's not as bad as yours was. I told the dealer and they "refitted" it in July. Didn't make any difference. I have been afraid to bring it up because I heard so many stories of dealers refusing to do anything and saying it was a characteristic of the cars. You have given me the confidence to try again.
I have the same colour SE LR done 9300 miles, and still performs as good as the day I picked it up. I haven't had the defect issues Stuart experienced, maybe I'm lucky? Never experienced charge anxiety which I did with my previous Zoe, and never drive on eco mode either. If your destination is sub 120 miles from home, you never need to use the buggy public charging infrastructure either.
Great video. Currently still in our Kona 64kWh which has been more or less faultless at 4.5 years and 98k miles. Spec and pricing changes probably mean that I won't get another Kona, but an mg4 looks a good bet. Hope mg will consider stuffing a few more kWhs into subsequent LFP versions. With the Kona, we can go on a very long round trip without thinking about 'wild' charging. It would be something of a minor sacrifice to let that go, but I do love the fact that LFP are happy at 100% soc.
Thanks for tuning in! That’s fantastic news that you are still going strong with your Kona. It’s a fantastic car and one I’d recommend have spent a couple of weeks with one. I’m seeing more and more owners with higher mileage on the cards and great to see EVs going strong and demonstrating their qualities. LFP definitely has its place and I hope to see it in more applications, hopefully in MGs!
@@naz-x I think you'll love it unless you need a massive boot. That and the coolant changes every 40k miles are a bit expensive because Hyundai switched coolants in later models. Wouldn't put me off though
my SE SR is 6+ months old .. the only thing that annoyed me is that I can't find a way to completely turned the light off while still having the power on .. I often have to wait for my family in the car and with the days getting darker and cold, not being able to keep my self warmed in the car and have the lights off really bothers me ..
Please do a review in 5 and 10 years! Id love to know how well theyre going in long terms. I really hope EVs can last the test of time and beat fossil fuel cars in the longterm too
We have owned two MG ZSs and had ordered a MG4 but our experience of after sales support for my dealer by MG UK was very poor, this put me off continuing with the purchase of the MG4. The issue was very simple, failure of the day time running lights to function correctly, an issue well known to them and experienced by many owners took 5 months to correct. I wondered if MG UK's supply would be any good for relatively new vehicle. To be honest the risk wasn't worth taking so I cancelled my order. The Hyundai UK support is far superior although I have only had one issue, 99% of owners only praise Hyundai Vehicles. Can't see any reason to go back to an MG, although the new MG3 Hybrid looks attractive.
Nice review. I've watched the MG4 since launch although won't be in the market for several years yet. My EV was a long term buy back in 2020. But i do feel that when time comes to move on that it'll be to an MG4, most likely Trophy LR or whatever it is at that time. The dealership experience is always my concern with MG, there being some horror stories with their EVs support, in particular software updating! That for me is the make or break regardless of however good the vehicle itself is.
Good video ST glad to hear the car is performing well. I've not long since got one and will be going to Wales soon, so hopefully the mpkh won't be too bad in the winter 🤞🏻
Good review. the only thing I would like to know is just how well it survives UK weather and if it rusts after 5 to 10 years - not saying it is any different to more familiar European brands but we don't have the same level of historic experience to draw upon.
great review I have the same colour and spec which I have had for 11 months 2 points which you overlooked it does have android auto but has to be plugged in also with the service you get 12 months break down included for free and if you sign up for the service plan it includes the mot
Congrats on your MG4. Indeed you’re correct, and I did miss that out about roadside recovery. I’ve only ever use apple carplay in all 3 reviews as I don’t have an android phone unfortunately.
Nice review, as the title says “owners honest review “ This is important for potential buyers, so many reviews are hard to read. As in if the reviewer bags the car the manufacturer won’t supply any more for reviews. Well done from an old bloke that reviews motorbikes in Aus👍
@@stuart_thomas I think you got my entire gripe list in my first comment! I would kill to be able to disable that infernal auto-lock at 10 mph. I would love forever the person who made the USB player work properly. Other than that, it's quibbles. Some of them are rumoured to be fixed by later updates. Oh, and the inability to pre-heat once charging has stopped but you're still plugged in. Do you have that issue? It's quite a big deal in cold weather if you charge to 100% overnight.
What a brilliant video mate thank you so much. Really tempted by this on a business lease with work. How big is the vehicle is it like a golf or is it polo size?
Glad to hear it is of help to you. I’d say cabin and boot is the same size of a golf but footprint slightly smaller as it can do away with longer bonnet and no transmission tunnel
Watching this in Dec 2024 and about to hand back my EX40, I have to say, even in the Trophy spec, there’s very little available at that price point with the same kit (that I can find anyway!)
Hey mate Great review. Can you help with the following questions please ? 1. How big is the boot? How many big bags (20kg) can you accommodate in the boot? 2. After installing car seat, how many people can sit? Thanks
I do have the measurements somewhere. If you watch my storage video you’ll see how many bags (including 20kg cases) I can fit. 2 cases and a cabin bag. I’d suggest for the back, you’d only fit one more person with a car seat.
Hi Stuart, Dave in France here. I don't have an MG4 but I have owned an MG ZSEV gen 1 for 2.5 yrs and love it to bits. I must admit that I'm slightly jealous of the, what sounds like, excellent service you have received from your MG dealer who continually came out with excuses for not being able to do stuff, rather than just getting it done. Over here in France vehicle dealers really don't seem to grasp the importance after-sale customer service. However the car itself continues to please ... subscribed.
Hi Dave. - thanks for tuning in. Sorry to hear your aftersales isn’t where it should be in France. I have heard similar previously. The main thing is your ZS is doing the job you need it to 👍
My MG4 EV trophy bought in may 2023 after 3 months fail do rapid charge. I rejected a car as dealer was unable to fix from 3 times to try. Ordered new one again from different dealer waiting for delivery end of November.
Thanks, another honest balanced report Stuart. Very similar findings here tho only 6 months in with my Trophy and no (urgent) reason to go back to the dealer. Will be rasing two issues soon tho (at least at/before first service) 1. Rattle/vibration from main touch screen - if you pinch the top RH corner it stops, suggests its not quite "snapped" together correctly, If it wasn't under waranty I'd drop a couple of dots of glue in the gap/join... 2. The often discussed phone not re-connectiong via Bluetooth issue. I believe this is fixed with a software update, did you have any software updates in your past year of ownership? - the interweb gossip suggest some dealers are reluctant On the SE vs LR battery point, yes I do run mine at max ~80% but bump it up to 100% when on hols. PS thanks for the front bonnet gas struts and video on how to fit those - working well, not used too often tho, only 4500 miles on the clock after 6 months and in rainy Manchester no need to use the front screen washers too much and delve in for a refill 😂
Great to hear you’re enjoying your car and the gas struts! It’s an interesting one on the connectivity- I haven’t had this issue really. Having said that I’m generally not in the car long enough to make phone calls but Audio via my phone is always good. It might be worth calling MG about any software or fit/finish issues, get them sorted early in case the warranty elapses on them. Thanks again for tuning in and commenting 👍
Your review is absolutely bob on! I too have the same car and I love it EXCEPT for the software issues. These need sorting. The LKA is a deathtrap and I get annoyed having to turn it off every time I get in the car or after opening a door. Grhhhh! The speed limit recognition is a farce and the adaptive cruise control is awful. Sort these software nightmares and this car is a WORLD BEATER.
Absolutley agree with this as my comment above. I borrowed one for a week and I was scared to drive it by the end. No way I would have my children in this thing. They are dangerous IMO.
Regarding your comments on internal lights I changed the bulbs for brighter ones 10 minutes job alot brighter now two screws to drop the whole unit out easier than just taking just the plastic covers off.
Thanks Stuart, informative video. I’m also thinking of buying a white MG4 and like the look of yours. I was thinking that white would also reflect heat better, why did you choose white? Also, would like to see a test on the Extended range if possible. Keep up the good work 👍🏼
Thank you for the kind compliment. I did initially want Camden grey but I could get a white one within a week so to that. Love the colour though. Hoping to get my hands on an x-power and extended range as soon as I can 👍
Thanks for this. A really detailed review. I am thinking of getting one of these to use for work (driving instructor). Are those purple lights in the back standard or after market?
We have driven our MG 4 Standard Range for 14 months and 2000 km's now, and agree with you in most parts, but the slow home charging speed, 3.1 kW, is annoying. We have solar panels on our roof, which most of the summer produce 8-12 kW in summer day time, and with a faster on board charger we would be able to use it better.
Most informative thanks, your video gave me confidence to buy one myself it's good to see a long term report from an owner. Had mine a week and love it. Still getting to grips wiyh the software but know enough to drive it safely
In 2017 I bought a new BMW 5 Series. Other than regular servicing and 1 software update - it has been faultless. In mint condition. Paintwork and panel fit are excellent. Interior remains like new, tight and showing no signs of ware. Depreciation running at £4K a year and driven almost everyday. Oh!! 38 mpg local and 49 mg on a run with a tank range of 650 miles. It bobs back and forth to Spain where 90% of EV's have foreign plates and diesel is 15/20% cheaper. Just saying!!
@@stuart_thomas Fully understood. EV's should cost far less from a maintenance perspective - less things to go wrong. How the Chinese MG's fair on build quality and durability will be interesting. My wife's next car will be an EV, as it is a perfect fit for the very local lifestyle it will live. So I have a vested interest.
@@vailydragon it’s a fair observation which I’d agree with 5-10 years ago. It’s worth a watch of Cleverley EV’s video (James and Kate) of their MG5 fleet. Great video, thanks Stuart. I'm 13000 miles into my MG4 Long Range after 8 months and in agreement: a great car, with total cost of ownership cheaper than an ICE car if charging at home on a smart tariff. And a joy to drive here in the Peak District. One question: do you know if owners can perform the software update themselves?
Thanks for the great feedback and great to hear you’re enjoying your MG4. I’ve heard map updates (for trophy spec) can be done manually but all other software has to be done in the dealership. I’m hoping over the air can be done soon. From what I understand the updates are pretty big in terms of data package size so probs best to be done on site.
Thanks for doing this long(er) term update about the MG4… I've been curious about the car since the beginning, but was offset by the (initial?) many issues the car seemed to have: - fast degradation of the battery (not sure if this is software-related or battery-related) - slow and/or buggy software - not remembering the driver-settings Glad to see that most of it seems to hold up remarkably well! :) Do you have any comments about the software by any chance? Did it improve in stability and snappyness for example?
Thanks for tuning in and the questions. I can’t comment on degradation of the LFP battery but I can say even on the colder climates the efficiency in last couple of weeks it’s on par with the same time last year. Car feels fantastic to drive and has been since day 1. Software is a contentious one as it’s quite subjective. I have no issues with software however it does require some maturity in order to make it a better experience. Interaction can be slower on start up but it doesn’t affect the driving or operation of the car. Hope that helps
Thanks for the update @@stuart_thomas, that helps a lot! From what I've heard, the driving experience (and the weight distribution) is fantastic in the MG4. I'm hoping to look into buying an EV next year, I'll have to check out how I feel about the software first hand in that case. The BYD Dolphin and (if it's released in time) the Renault 5 are my top-3 contenders at the moment :)
Stuart, you will have noticed that the outside temp display disappeared with the R16 infotainment update. R33 is now available for the SE which restores this. Dealers have been issued with the update recently. Do you have the issue with the AC pump noise, and if so, did you get it resolved? Thanks for your videos - very informative.
Hi and thanks for tuning in. Thanks for the comment. Dealer said my update was the latest MG want to push. Might be worth the conversation with them as this was a few weeks back now. Is it a tapping noise? That’s the PTC heater isn’t it? I’ve always had that noise and wasn’t aware it’s an issue. Many thanks ☺️
@@stuart_thomas R21 has been on SE for several months, pretty sure there was also R29 too before the R33 came along. Dealers don't seem to realise that most (all?) modules with waiting updates have to be updated, before the infotainment will update to the latest version. Most just seem to connect back to MG servers, do a "Check For Updates", and then if the update software isn't reporting any available update, assume that it's at the most up to date version, when this definitely isn't the case. Some people on mgevs forum reported that dealer will download the Infotainment file onto a USB key and update with that, as the update software connecting to MG servers says that there's no available Infotainment update, even when dealer is aware that there are later versions.
Good videos. I don't understand why you'd compare an 80% charge with 100%. You'd compare like for like. Whether you need the extra range or use it in case of cold weather or provide a buffer aside, there isn't any point in comparing differently in my view.
@@stuart_thomas Fair enough. It just makes it difficult if MG released a short range version of their car for comparison. 🤣 Keep it at 120 percent charged!
You lost me at dashboard blister! Was considering an MG but now I’ll get another Corolla! Chinese stuff will no doubt continue to improve but for the next few years Toyota will get my business.
The same for the easy marking of door interior sills and panels. This is obviously an area that will receive a lot of knocks and should be able to take it without marking it permanently
Nice video, however, mind that ANY kind of battery chemistry is at the most stressed state when fully charged or fully discharged. It is true the it's not as bad with LFP compared to NCM but it will still happen, so if you don't need max range all the time and you want longevity, limit the charging. Charge fully only ocasionally for calibration.
I still think if you are leasing, which you really should with electric vehicles due to the depreciation issues, the better versions like the Trophy ER give more value since you don't really have to care about the long term battery conditions but if you are buying out right, you should go for the cheapest due to that sole issue. I also agree that V2L is an overlooked feature for EVs and it's one of the reasons to avoid Teslas at the time of writing this since they don't seem to want it as a feature. Makes those days away much more comfortable if you don't want to haul about charcoal and a stove.
I'd miss the Trophy's cameras and extra safety features that aren't included on the SE, particularly as the rear visibility doesn't look great on the MG4. Not actually driven one though, so it might not be as bad as it looks. Shame there's not an LFP battery Trophy though; that would be perfect.
@@decimal1815 If you've been driving for years, it's a non-issue. All the MG4s come with parking sensors anyway so the cameras are just there for peace of mind. What the big kicker is, is that MG have said the platform that debuted with the MG4 can supposedly handle double the battery capacity it currently can. While battery weight DOES mess with range, that implies that there could be a 100/128/144kw platform and I'd be more than happy to purchase an LFP MG4 with that kind of capacity, especially if it means the SE can do 400+ miles on a charge. I guess we'll need to wait for the sodium battery cars to show up before anyone competes like that tho.
@@billienomates7100 I'm happy to admit that I'm not a perfect driver ;) Don't like the idea of not being able to see out of the rear window when doing manoeuvres at speed. Travelling on the M62 is also bad for sudden freak weather changes! One minute sun, next minute heavy snow. And top speed: 50mph if you're lucky. Haha. Didn't know about the battery potential though. Interesting...
If you press custom in DRIVING then press what you want, apart from the last button to press on or off which is eco mode it will stay in those settings. I get in , brake on and drive then custom. Settings there sorted ✔️ Hate FCA hate it- it’s Slammes on blown horns and all the jazz twice on me , both times I’m in the middle ish of the road turning right and the cars pass me on my left (just way road is) and it’s scary and the LKA works sometimes and sometimes not. I charged up to 100% yesterday and it gave 112 miles on a full charge maybe because it’s Baltic in North England atm. Had more rear back tyres warning alerts than can shake a stick at and the remote AC won’t work in this cold atm either. The car is such a joy to drive though it’s all forgivable tbh. I’ve never had front collision assist so I turn it off now as soon as I get in TJA and all that. Radio and Apple Play work fine and she’s is stunningly sexy in Black MG4 SE SR ❤ had her a little over a month.
Hi, I like your honest opinon with wear an tear of the car after a year use, I got a 64 essence and only had it a week discovered the warp under floor panels, dealer waiting on word from MG for a fix, I found the wide sills a bit of a pain to navigate over an the seat is too low at the rear needs a tilt in seat to lift your bottom up, feels like you are sinking in a hole but aside from that mechanically it drives well except for the hard suspention linked with hard low profile Bridgestone tyres you feel every bump an pothole you go over making a loud thud while doing it, might go down to 17 inch an high profile tyres to fix it.
@@theairstig9164 I've had one passenger mention them, but the very elderly lady I take to church says she doesn't notice an issue. Nor do I. Seems to be very individual.
I've had no real issues with 12 months with the SE and I'm one of the lucky ones where LKA stays off. Out of interest what was your battery SOH at first service? Mine was 96.3% which I thought was quite a drop.
Great to hear you’re enjoying the SE. Did you perform your own battery health test or was that from MG? TBH, that sounds spot on. How many miles have you done? Most degradation is in year one, this should start to become more linear gradually with smaller increments.
Yep first 2 years sees the biggest drop, up to 10% especially in the LFP battery, but then the LFP degrade much slower after that. Hence the 4000 cycle life.
Great review, I have driven the mg4 64 kw , and was very impressed, but like you I like the battery that is in your car , had a look at the BYD dolphin the other day just waiting for a test drive , as I do like the blade batteries, do you think the mg will last as long as your Tesla (longevity) and has there been any battery 🪫 capacity yet , cheers
I've had my dolphin comfort for 3 months and it's lovely, range exceeding the WLTP of 273miles in all but the coldest of weather, really well put together and feels a bit nicer inside than the MG4
7:58 there must be hardware and software shared between providers, because I have seen that *exact* screen ("- DC Charger Abnormal Output Voltage - ") up here on a ChargePlace Scotland 50kw rapid charger. Roughly 3 in every 4 times I try to use it, it'll pop that error the moment I plug it in, then be fine the second attempt.
I have exactly the same thing, on the ChargePlace Scotland charger at the end of my road. Every single time I get that screen, and I unplug and plug in again, and every single time it all works at the second attempt. I have never failed to get a charge, but always that abortive first attempt. I keep meaning to photograph the screen and email them about it. Have you tried contacting them?
I live in Thailand and they’ve recently started building the MG4 here including the batteries. I will test drive one soon. Thanks for your review.

Same experienced here with same trim of this model. Fantastic car and driving experienced is also superb.
Thanks for this Stuart. The MG4 is doing really well here in France too, seeing a lot more of them around than I expected. I'm over 90,000 km now on the Kia e-Niro and will be doing my 5 year report in March 2024. 😊

I guess you're busy at work..😊
Great 12 month review. I have an Essence 64 with the extras. 3500km in 6 weeks. Fantastic car.
Great to hear you’re happy despite it’s the second. Onwards and upwards
@@jonnyluff33 it's better on the T superchargers
Ive just ordered one and they have updated, they do remember driver setup now
Is this 100% confirmed?
I’ve got mine now for 2 weeks and I love it. It’s a great value for the money.
How much are you usually using at 100kph and how much are you paying per kWh?
Is it too late to break up 😂
Brilliant stuff, as usual, thanks for preparing me for Monday and delivery of my MG4 SE. 😊 On my workplace scheme this car has no competition
Great to hear and congrats 🙌
Idea of prices and range would have been useful
Had our SE 4 for six months and loving it. The only irritation is lane assist and lack of exterior temperature reading. Good review
Might be telling you how to suck eggs but a software update will bring the outside temperature, it not showing is a bug.
Informative review covering the relevant points of ownership. I like your approach as you’ve gone for the factual approach rather than attention grabbing titles and drama, unlike other EV based channels.
Thanks so much for your great comments and for tuning in it’s truly appreciated!
Hi Stuart, thank you so much for your honest content. Im looking into getting a 51 in Australia and your thorough insight into the car ownership, even through wareanty issues has been so invaluable. Thanks again from Australia ✌️
Glad it was help to you. Thanks again for tuning in 👍
I think you made the right choice , because of the battery chemistry

Cannot wait to get my one in some months in 2024 =)

Great review. Not very high mileage but good to see it's done you good for your family.
I was considering the ZS EV a bit more with two daughters and a dog included.
Glad to see your POV as a person that will keep the car long term.
As someone who was originally going for a ZS with the 4 not even being on my radar because I thought it was too small. When I saw them both at the dealer and test driven both, the 4 seems way more roomy than the ZS is. The ZS felt very cramped, its also less wide so makes sense.

A welcome 1 year round up . Thanks
Keep up the good work :-)
Excellent appraisal, very down to earth observations, best "reviewer." Common sense approach to explaining your experience, thanks, 🇬🇧
Hi. New to your channel, here's some feedback if you're interested:
When I watch a video longer than 10 minutes, I like it when the RUclipsr adds chapters to the video using timestamps. This way, if I'm only interested in what you have to say about battery life for example, I can immediately jump to that and watch the conclusion.
Good video anyway, good luck with your channel.
Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for your feedback on this low depreciation car
Thank You for this video, been waiting for it, interesting and useful.
I wish you all the good thing with your mg4 and this channel.
Thanks for the great feedback and for tuning in, it means an awful lot. 🤘
I agree all your findings. My only criticism is the default lane assist which is useless on the roads I drive on.
Very genuine review, many thanks!
Thanks Stuart, one more thing is MG have some great 0% PCP deals at the moment too and am seriously considering the MG4.
I’m seeing more and more owners with higher mileage on the cards and great to see EVs going strong and demonstrating their qualities. i love videos like this. right to the point
I think it's a postcode lottery concerning the support.. my local garage, Blights in Bideford is very good.

It has nothing British left except the name, it's 100% chinese. Bought by SAIC in 2007.
are you havin a laugh......................its chinese
What isn’t Chinese or has components from that region? Sometimes, the badge is all that’s left unfortunately
🤦♂️🤣🤣🤣
British my a**e! Thank China for this. MG in name only or Morris Garages as once was, I believe, 'when I were a lad'
Watching this in Dec 2024 and about to hand back my EX40, I have to say, even in the Trophy spec, there’s very little available at that price point with the same kit (that I can find anyway!)
I have had my MG4 Trophy for almost a month, my view is that it is great value for money, particularly with the 0% interest PCP on offer.
I agree, there are some superb offers on the MG4 line-up which is superb considering the current UK interest rates.
Brand new MG4s seem to be less per month than used!
Hey mate
Great review.
Hi Stuart! Great review. Just wanted to get an update on if there's any rattling or squeaking noises from the cabin?
Thanks!
Thanks for tuning. Im pleased to announce. No rattling or squeaks.
You only drove 6600 Miles in one year. Give us an update at the 50.000 mark
Thanks for the update, very useful. Perhaps I missed it but I didn't see the onecarstereo wireless unit. Have you stopped using this?
Thanks for tuning in. It’s still in the car and gets used.
I have heard about this. Well done for rejecting it. I’m sure the new one will be on the money.
Thanks, another honest balanced report Stuart. Very similar findings here tho only 6 months in with my Trophy and no (urgent) reason to go back to the dealer.
Will be rasing two issues soon tho (at least at/before first service)
- the interweb gossip suggest some dealers are reluctant
On the SE vs LR battery point, yes I do run mine at max ~80% but bump it up to 100% when on hols.
Thanks for a great video again!
Could you tell anyting about the rust protection, is the car chassis galvanized?
Thanks for tuning in. I believe like most cars are built with galvanised steel. MG offers a 7-year warranty on corrosion etc
That door plastic pattern is prone to scratch. Had similar in our ZOE.
Great video mate, very helpful thank you!
Thanks for tuning in and glad it was of help to you. Congrats on yours, I hope you have a wonderful experience with it
In 2017 I bought a new BMW 5 Series.
That’s fine and great example but this is a review of this car not EVs vs Petrol/diesels.
Oldest one has hit 100k miles in 2 years, it’s amazing what this car goes through as a work van ruclips.net/video/Kj7fJ5JI-yI/видео.htmlsi=QjODrTKGFOP6FmYR
In Germany I do get updates quite regularly ota.
There’s even a function in the menu to start updates manually.
@@Groegselmaschupp that’s dead interesting- what updates have you had?
@@stuart_thomas hi, the last update was from 11/23/2023. haven’t looked into the changes., sorry. But there are normally 2-5 updates per month.
Thank you, most informative
Thanks for doing this long(er) term update about the MG4… I've been curious about the car since the beginning, but was offset by the (initial?) many issues the car seemed to have:
- fast degradation of the battery (not sure if this is software-related or battery-related)
- slow and/or buggy software
- not remembering the driver-settings
Glad to see that most of it seems to hold up remarkably well! :)
Do you have any comments about the software by any chance?
Great content, subscribed! Looking forward to future videos.
Good videos. I don't understand why you'd compare an 80% charge with 100%. You'd compare like for like. Whether you need the extra range or use it in case of cold weather or provide a buffer aside, there isn't any point in comparing differently in my view.
It’s a fair point. My comparison is based on manufacturer recommendations based on daily use case.
It seems Toyota are soon to begin having electric cars built for them in China.....
Why can I see on the digital drivers display it says 95mph??
It’s 95kph
That’s good😂
Nice video, however, mind that ANY kind of battery chemistry is at the most stressed state when fully charged or fully discharged.
I agree, if you’re leasing get as much as you can for your money. Tons of schemes like salary sacrifice etc which take advantage of this.
V2L🤘
@@stuart_thomas hey, don't wreck the car for the next owner; it's likely to be me buying used bargains! ;)
Great video! 👏👏👏
Thank You Stuart, is there app for this car?
Yes there is. You can preheat, schedule charging, unlock, lock etc
Thank you so much for valuable review. Would you buy a used MG4?
If you press custom in DRIVING then press what you want, apart from the last button to press on or off which is eco mode it will stay in those settings. I get in , brake on and drive then custom. Settings there sorted ✔️
Hate FCA hate it- it’s Slammes on blown horns and all the jazz twice on me , both times I’m in the middle ish of the road turning right and the cars pass me on my left (just way road is) and it’s scary and the LKA works sometimes and sometimes not.
The door sills are a huge issue for my wife
@@theairstig9164 I've had one passenger mention them, but the very elderly lady I take to church says she doesn't notice an issue. Nor do I. Seems to be very individual.
Latest research say charge to full only once per month and at all other times to 80% for LFP batteries.
Hi Australia here
0.69 Pounds per kWh is AUD1.33 per kWh!!!!! This is insane! Crazy! Why is it so expensive?
Just is unfortunately. Luckily we have Tesla superchargers at 39p pkWh
How’s the anti corrosion protection holding up? You mentioned the springs; how about the rest of the car?
So far it’s fantastic. No issues
Yep, more than likely. Many use the same. If you watch my public charging challenge you’ll see replicated UI across multiple providers
Have you tried contacting them?
is there a back camera, I did not notice it!
Not on this model, but there is one on the Trophy model
