I have the Mg4 and the wife has the ID3. The MG4 is nicer to drive and comes fully loaded, but on a long run we prefer the ID3 for its ride and better seats. The ID3 takes a little longer to charge compared to the MG which regularly charges at 130-140kw. If buying secondhand the MG is likely to have plenty of warranty left out of its 7yrs where our ID3 only has three yrs.

Thanks for an interesting comparison of those two cars and your real world experience. I've owned a Kia e-Niro from new in March 2019, now on 102,000 km and its been pretty much faultless. We live in France and do long hauls in the car, finding it comfortable and the build quality is as good as anything German or Japanese I've owned. The charging speed of the MG4 makes me jealous though..we top out at 75 kW but tbh on long trips we don't mind taking a 30 minute rest to eat/drink and use the bathroom.

Yes, the MG is more of a drivers car in how it steers and handles. Our ID3 seems boring by comparison, but the softer suspension and better seats of the ID3 are what you want when travelling long distances. Both are very good cars, but in different ways. Horses for courses and all that.

@sebastian5903 always test for yourself. What one person finds good others will find unlivable with. Having driven an early MG4 I can say it is a brilliant car to drive. Not having driven an ID3 I cannot compare. All I will say is I can do a 10 hour taxi driving shift in the MG4 without a problem.
The other thing to understand is SIAC (who make MG cars) also make all the VW group cars for the Chinese Market and also make many parts for VW and export to Germany. So in reality many of the parts in the MG are identical to those in the ID3 certianly in quality.

We have had an ID3 for nearly 2.5 years and love it. Agree with pretty much everything you said about driving it, although I find the brakes absolutely fine once used to them. We don't find the controls to be a problem at all. The non back-lit slider and rear window controls are a bit silly but very minor.
It does a good job for long journeys (have done a couple of journeys over 1000 miles and many in the 3-500range) and I would add that the amazing turning circle means it is the best you can buy for urban driving.
I haven't driven an MG4, but the ID3 is also quite fun on a B road. It lacks a bit of feel but is well balanced and has enough power. You can get them with big discounts now, so the price difference to the MG isn't what the rrp suggests.

Note that discounts are great for the buyer, dreadful for the manufacturer. However, when looking at the competition (and what is coming) - the ID3 will HAVE to do something about the price if VW want to stay relevant. The fact that the UK does not get the revised infotainment screen (and probably misplaced buttons and knobs still set up for left hand drive) suggests VW are not exactly bothering to make a splash in the UK?

I have an orange MG4 Trophy LR. Why do these expert reviews always fail to note that the “fiddly touchscreen” can be negated by using the Hey MG voice control or indeed commonly used controls such as heating control can be assigned to the joysticks on the steering wheel. Yes the touchscreen is less than ideal but unlike some others there are decent alternative control functions. I have drive modes on left side and the right side joystick alternates between audio control and heater control at the touch of a physical button on the wheel. Simple.

    • @lazymandoplayer

I have the same model and have set the control options in the same way. I don't really use the voice control very much but it's there if a little limited. WLTP is quoted as 270 mile and In January I was seeing around 220 miles but that may have been partially due to me being a new EV owner and sitting in it fiddling. Currently (June 2024) I'm seeing well over 300 miles on the mix of driving that I'm doing. To be fair not much of that is motorway speeds but a recent journey from near Horsham to Swindon to Reigate and back to near Horsham could easily have been completed on a single charge. I did top up at the Gridserve chargers at Swindon as I'd never used public charging to that point and wanted the experience but I still had 68% of capacity when I topped up to 80%. Mine was an ex-demonstrator which cost me just over £26k with 8000 on the clock at a convenient dealership list price for the model was £33k.

@ISuperTed Stellantis are bonkers adding £10,000 to a petrol model and calling it BEV. Batteries have already dropped 50% last year.. broken through the $100/kwh barrier and now dropped over 50% and are sitting at $46... So take out a £5,000 engine... add a £1,500 motor and a £2,500 battery pack...!! The sums prove they are taking the piss!! At worst BEVs are now equal in cost to ICE. But they are doing massive RRP and then devaluing by 60% in two years. Nothing wrong with a Corsa, Astra, Citroën but at the RIGHT price.

Seats are horrible and squidgy. Suspension is OK but brakes are weak. Citroën is no BMW, but it's seats are great. Suspension and brakes just right. Well the efficiency is WILDLY dependant on the driver. I have had both the ID3 and now have the MG4. The ID3 has no chance what so ever to reach it's WLTP summertime but the MG4 has no problems. Wintertime the MG4 looses 40% of its range in the absolute coldest but the ID3 is better. (Talking -20 celcius over time the mg drops down to 230km and the ID3 to around 275km in my ownership) but if my wife drives these cars ( both the ID and the MG) She has tons more range then me because of driver style, heating, cooling etc.

I was waiting and waiting for actual testing of the energy consumption. In my opinion, the Astra's not losing out there, and if distances simply cost less, that's a positive point both for the budget as well as our planet. I understand that we need 240 kWh batteries that charge in 3 minutes to persuade the holdouts, but in real life, people (at least more than 85% of them) don't drive more than 40 miles per day, so carrying around larger capacity batteries don't make actual sense. You also don't need a 0-62 mph figure that's very low to stand in traffic on your way to work or on your way home. But the ability of people to use reason with their 21st century brains has some people prefer a near 3 ton SUV with a 100+ kWh battery for in town use, and they probably charge it every night from 90-100%.

    • @Dreador.
      @Dreador. 7 месяцев назад

Issue is though its priced less competitively so even if it was 4 miles per kWh and the other two were 3.5 doing 10,000 mpa is only going to save you 350 odd kWh which is £26 (7.5p per kWh) so hardly going to help recover anything.
I get your point on the battery size but they here are not comparing the Astra to the standard MG 4 which actually has a smaller battery than the Astra 51v54.
Finally from what I can see the MG4 already has LFP batteries where Astra does not yet... so on eco grounds MG4 would win if thats the case.

    good review / comparison.
either i wait for the skoda epiq or for the next version of the ID.3, which might be a Golf 9.
for all these comparisons a deeper dive in the battery system might be helpful. it is important to know if the battery is module based, if it shares the same modules with other cars, what the cost for a single module is and what is the total repair cost if one module needs to be changed.
this is something that drives me to VW. you can buy a single module online for only 2150€. but i don't know how much repair cost of the battery would be.
VW only uses just a few variants and in 10 years from now there are plenty of 2nd hand modules available for a low price ( i guess easy under 1000€, maybe only 500€).
that modularity gives me the necessary safety net of low battery repair costs.
for people who give back the car after 3 or 4 years of leasing this is not relevant at all. but i am more oriented to second hand cars or keep it very long - beyond the warranty.

It is all about timing. I remember when unleaded fuel arrived and the holdouts complained you could not fill up anywhere. Best to hold onto those Leaded fuel items. This caused a temporary rise in their value as everyone had the same idea. Then soon after unleaded was a thing, you could not give leaded fuel cars away. And all the leaded fuel disappeared off the forecourts anyway. The same thing is happening here. At some point in the near future, diesels and petrols won't be worth their scrap metal value, but while the transition happens - people hold onto what they have, new car prices come under pressure to drop, dragging down buoyant 2nd hand ICE prices eventually.

In Australia, the MG4 apart from being the only of these 3 offered currently in October 2024, is going for AUD $30,990 driveway (£15,788) for the base model. If priced at £16k in the UK, it would be an absolute bargain.

The cars follow different strategies, the ID priorities on the battery to have changeable modules, that's put weight and lessen the range. But it's definitely more reliable and sustainable. Anything wrong with the MG4 battery will cause the replacement of the whole damn battery.
I will not talk about the Astra as it's not a bespoke EV, which means loads of wasted legroom and practically poor weight distribution, and so

    Out of those 3 it’s the ID.3 ,
That’s why i own one , I found the MG4 cramped in the rear & the lane assist is dangerous on any narrower roads than a motorway what on the one i checked out it could not be turned off ..
With the ID.3 rear space is more generous & you can turn off the lane assist .

Own the MG4 LR…..way more affordable than the VW or Astra. With road tax changes in 2025, one needs to consider whether the 40k stealth wealth tax will be applied to EVs. If so, then the MG4 is the absolute clear winner, with the more desirable higher spec options still way under 40k.

A combination of factors: the electric motors are not as efficient at higher speeds, some losses in the reduction gear, the aerodynamics are not as good which obviously shows once again at higher speeds, the electronics managing the battery (BMS) and the HVAC systems.
If you were to test by switching off the HVAC and limiting maximum speed to 55mph though you wouldn’t find much difference, particularly in the UK summer.
It really is just that EVs are so efficient that you do notice small differences, even the tyres make as much as 10% diffidence in acceleration and regen, particularly in the wet.

Hi my UK friends. I have made a long comment in Spanish in another Spanish video.
Will be worth to you doing a Google translate of this:
    -menus bien traducidos etc
