The idea for the title of this song came from when they would watch TV and when it talked about the weather in the USA it seemed like they would always say "the sun is shining". Because in Norway, where they are from, and in England where they moved to to pursue their music career, it was often cloudy and rainy. The song, Hunting HIgh and Low, is about Paul, the one playing the guitar, while in England fell in love with an American girl (Lauren) who was in England studying in college. Her study visa ended and she had to return to America. That song was his desperate plea for England to let her stay. The two eventually got married, and to this day they are still together. The couple created another band called Savoy, which they named after her last name.

The song is from their first album, so they most likely were in England at the time. The sentence is taken directly from the reporter on TV, who said "The sun always shines on TV". They immediately knew it would be a great title for a song. Watching american movies in western Europe, you know. Always nice weather. I guess they have the same feeling about the weather on TV in Washington State and in Vancouver, Canada.

Its on the same album so they didnt try to re-create the success of Take On Me. Take On Me was Released 1 month before the album. And This is the "Official" second single. Although "Love Is Reason" was Released in Norway and Phillipines between those two. And Love is Reason was the B side on Take On Me. A-ha have never tried to re-create success. They always evolved their music forward and was usually a step ahead of the times. Their second album "Scoundrel Days" is in no way similar to "Hunting High and Low" (the first). My fav album by them is 2005s "Analouge". Their latest "Cast of Steel" is a close second. Also a big fan of Memorial Beach from 93. A New album is coming in October btw called "True North".

Cool! Yeah, this was when we very first started getting to, or I should I started sharing old music videos with Ryder. And although I've known of a-ha forever, I wasn't aware of much beyond Take on Me or even what the band was about. My assumption that they were attempting to recreate success came from Americans' always trying to do the same. That was totally my bad... They had a concert in Napa, CA last month, which is relatively close to where we live. I really wanted to go, because I've never seen them in person, but the timing just didn't work out. Hopefully, we'll get another chance... Thanks for the comment!😁

"The sun always shines on TV" is a methaphor for "There are always happy endings but just on TV respectively in movies" .. respectively a methaphor for "Just on TV/movies dreams become true"...that´s why the real ending of the "Take on me video" is shown here at the beginning simply to show that most of the time when after dreaming reality pops in things very often might not end happily in real life.... (= the comic guy has to return to the comic strip left in the Diner and couldn´t stay by the girl)...So the girl´s dream didn´t end happily respectively her dream didn´t become true because her dream was far from reality.

In UK and Europe it was our no1 song unlike the States (they prefer easier catchy audios) because its deeper, darker with elite vocals and soaring powerful instruments. Its considered a masterpiece and masterpieces dont have to be 1 billion views. This and Hunting High and Low was always our fav here in Greece, Take on Me was good but a song is not about its video or your eyesight, its about your ears and your soul.

Loved your reaction! It was massive here in UK and reached number one. Take On Me only managed number two here! Anyway I thought I'd share a little review I did of this song, hope you don't mind!
Inarguable pop classics #1: A-ha: The Sun Always Shines on TV
February 13, 20152 min readNikolai Rainbow
Norwegian pop perfectionists A-ha were always more than just another pop group, such was their reach and mastery of their craft: pretty much any of their 80’s singles could have made this article bar their lightweight playful songs such as “Touchy!” which to my mind never could match their darker more tense songs, and my god, “The Sun Always Shines …” is tense as hell, especially following the massive success of the far more lightweight and upbeat "Take On Me"
It’s essentially a progressive rock epic filtered through a pop lens and is every bit as momentous as any of the great epic tracks we all know and love. Consider the way the tension builds throughout rising higher and higher and the fact that the drums don’t even appear until a minute in and the first verse almost two minutes in. This is far from your average pop song structurally but hangs together magnificently.
The relative serenity of the opening section and first chorus with its wistful chords suddenly gives way to pounding intensity, squealing guitars, ominous synth and stabbing minor piano chords with Mortens impassioned, desperate and impossibly high vocal holding it all together until the final chorus where the music crashes around him. Before a final stabbing piano chord a la “A Day In The Life” and the ominous burbling synths return to fade us out of an epic five minutes. Truly a classic of its time or any other and far more than ‘just’ a pop song in my humble opinion and just as exhilarating on the thousandth listen as it was on the first. True class.

The interesting thing is the woman, Bunty Baily, was in a relationship with Morten Harket, the singer. But she couldn't handle all the pressure from the attention of being his girlfriend, being constantly hounded by the paparazzi (think, Princess Diana) and it resulted in them breaking up. This video is almost like it's mirroring that. Art mimicking real life, kind of thing. They ended up only dating for about 3 months.

@@CousinRyan Happy to hear how you have discovered this great band and what they have to offer besides Take on me. They are my favourite band and have an amazing catalogue. Good luck exploring more of them :) My all time favourite song is "Memorial Beach" from the album with the same title. Closely followed by "Scoundrel Days" also from the album with the same title. Would really love to see a reaction to them if you still have not yet discovered these songs.

@@onlyme064 Thank you for the recommendations! I've never heard of those songs, do they have music videos? I'll put them on my list of videos to react to. I've got three weeks of videos scheduled already, but I'll definitely schedule these for the next round! Thank you!😁

@@CousinRyan I noticed now that you only react to songs with a music video and im sorry to say that neither of these songs have one. Ofcourse there are lots of live performences and other videos of these songs you can find here on youtube but no official music video. Scoundrel Days though have a fanmade video where they use live footage from the 80s movie "The Lost Boys" There is also a short video of the tv series "Baywatch" where they used Memorial Beach you also can find on youtube. but i guess thats not what you want to react to. Since im more into the music itself, rather than theire music videos i recommend that you will at some point listen to theire music without letting theire music video play such a big part. If so, enjoy that journey.

@@onlyme064 I'm definitely gonna give these songs a listen. It's just that the focus of our channel and reactions is about the music combined with the performer's music video and I'm not sure I want deviate from that format. I want to react to these songs, but I also don't want to set a presidence for reacting to requested music without a video. I hope that makes sense, I'm not saying "no" to these, just please give me some time.
