This song blew me away when it came out and turned me into a life long fan. Last year they did a sold out gig at the Royal Albert hall. They still sound amazing live and are scheduled to tour the UK in November - depending on covid of course. Morten is now in his sixties and can still hit that note, though admittedly his voice isn't quite the same. You should check out their MTG unplugged version of Take on Me. I was there at the recording 3 years ago and it was an incredible night

i remember when this video was in heavy rotation on MTV here in the U.S. takes me back to my teenage years. the great thing about being a teen back then was that the music wasn't like anything my parents grew up with. these were sounds no one had heard before.

I would have never thought I’d see your generation reacting to this one, maybe Take On Me, but I’m so glad you guys did this one. It’s fire, totally filled with that 80’s sound. If you liked this, I STRONGLY suggest looking up the MTV unplugged version they did in 2017. Morten was in his 50’s and can still belt out those awesome high notes. On the unplugged version he does it as a duet with a Norwegian female pop singer. Cheers guys!!!

To me this is the best and greatest song they've ever sung ... its so epic, although not as big a hit as Take On Me but I think it edges Take On Me in quality in many ways ...its inevitable that they had to have a slow decline after hitting such a height with this one ... (but The Living Daylights is another really good song though) ...

Basically, the song is saying the only happy endings are on TV and in the movies.
I am old enough to remember when this song came out. Aha started as a small band from a small place (norway) looking for sucsess. I think this video and lyric says pretty clearly how they felt about becoming famous. Like the old saying " careful what you wish for" :-)

I do remember this song getting some airplay on the radio back in late 1985 here in the US but Take On Me was really their only hit here.Personally I always liked this song better

Don't forget the brothers' reaction to a-ha, the Norwegian group in the song "Take On Me". They have done two versions of it. Norwegian pop perfectionists A-ha were always more than just another pop group, such was their reach and mastery of their craft: pretty much any of their 80’s singles could have made this article bar their lightweight playful songs such as “Touchy!” which to my mind never could match their darker more tense songs, and my god, “The Sun Always Shines …” is tense as hell.
It’s essentially a progressive rock epic filtered through a pop lens and is every bit as momentous as any of the great epic tracks we all know and love. Consider the way the tension builds throughout rising higher and higher and the fact that the drums don’t even appear until a minute in and the first verse almost two minutes in. This is far from your average pop song structurally but hangs together magnificently.
The relative serenity of the opening section and first chorus with its wistful chords suddenly gives way to pounding intensity, squealing guitars, ominous synth and stabbing minor piano chords with Mortens impassioned, desperate and impossibly high vocal holding it all together until the final chorus where the music crashes around him. Before a final stabbing piano chord a la “A Day In The Life” and the ominous burbling synths return to fade us out of an epic five minutes. Truly a classic of its time or any other and far more than ‘just’ a pop song in my humble opinion and just as exhilarating on the thousandth listen as it was on the first. True class.
Great a-ha song. It got to number one, whereas Take on Me only got to number two in the charts here. I've never understood what the video was all about though!!
