Janes Combat Sim, Fighters Anthology was 1997 or 8 (which coincidentally predicted the Russian Crimea invasion in the F14/F18 US navy campaign). Still Tears of the Sun itself was based off of true events. Only it was a Canadian JTF-2 team operating in South America that went against orders in order to save innocents, not the SEALs. Still a great movie and despite inaccuracies it left me with a feeling of desperation and struggle and ultimately admiration for a real life special forces team that actually did disobey orders in order to save lives.

As someone who works in the film industry, I think I understand what happened with the Master Arm Switch/Spin Recovery Switch. There's an old filmmaking rule called the 180 degree rule - to help the audience stay oriented spatially when they watch the film. Since the Hornets are moving right to left, filming the incorrect switch maintains that same general orientation. If they had popped the camera over to the other side of the jet to get the Master Arm Switch, it would suddenly appear to the audience that the jets are moving in the opposite direction. They probably realized the correct switch was on the "wrong" side of the cockpit when they were boarding it out (or worse, possibly on set), and rather than add shots (money/time) to solve the continuity problem - just called art department to dress up the Spin Recovery Switch, since MOST people have no idea what they're looking at. That one, from a filmmaking perspective makes sense to me (at least why it happened). The randomly armed/not armed thing is frustrating though, because that's basic continuity - since they're already using CG they'd have the resources to add them in if budget/time allowed. I dig these videos! Thanks for making them!

Not disagreeing that its stupid, but it must have been an aesthetic choice from the director in that he wanted to shoot from the jets' left for subconcious psychological reasons (so they move from right to left), so for continuity you have to make the in-cockpit shot from the left too or it'll look weird

I was a pilot in this movie in the SH-60B helicopter at about 14:25 mark in this video, the one farthest out from the camera.
There were actually 4 SH-60B's from HSL-37 airborne but I think you only see 3 in the film. We shot for about a week in Oahu. Got to hang out on set. Bruce Willis was really cool, spent time hanging with the aircrew and maintainers. His daughter was a girl scout. Each year Bruce bought thousands of boxes of girl scout cookies and sent out to the fleet. The year prior my ship received a crate of the girl scout cookies, complements of Bruce. That is how we struck up the conversation with him - he was stoked to meet someone who actually received his cookies. Two people from my squadron got a couple seconds of face time on film, the C.O. and an aircrew Senior Chief.

That was shot on Oahu, I was working traffic control during that sequence. The F/A-18's did a low pass through the valley before they detonated the pyrotechnics. Then they brought in the SH-60's to fly in, land, and take off. The part of the road I was on was slightly higher (pretty wide valley) than the F/A-18's, and it was an awesome sight to see.

So glad you did this one! I didn't suggest it in my lists just for how short it was, but that was allot of details you pointed out.
They probably wanted the Missile Armed to look more tactical/dramatic.

Idea for another Mover Ruins Movies: you could do "we were soldiers" ,it's about the first actual Battle of Vietnam ,but there is one scene with fighter jets .
The majority of the movie seemed pretty accurate ,so I don't know how much actual content you would get out of it.

I don't know if this makes it better or worse, but the Hornets are from VFA-204 River Rattlers. You might be able to see it on one of the scenes. I saw this little factoid on Wikipedia last night.

These are super fun and interesting. I always find it interesting how Hollywood screws things up, even when to do so takes more work than it would to just get it right. My dad was a big gun enthusiast (not gun nut) and he always hated it when he saw guns in movies that didn't even exist when the movie was supposed to be taking place. Most people would never notice things like that, but I found it interesting. I hope you keep doing more of these! It would be cool to see you do some cop stuff too since you spent time as one. My dad and brother were both cops and they would always see screw ups in cop shows and movies.

Continuity on combat aircraft in Hollywood, even in films like Topgun, that have access to USN and USAF almost never happens. Film editors don't know the difference between a CBU and an AIM-120. They don't think anyone notices. And the
few that do notice don't make up an important part of the film going audience. It costs a lot of bucks to pay the Navy to load out a jet for a film and fly it (assuming they'll even do that!). It costs considerably less to use stock footage.

Looks like the director of the 1980ies eries The A-Team took on this movie. The 'crack commando team' (with one of them - BA - afraid of flrying) that shot everything up and the bad guys always stumbled out of a carwreck rubbing their heads as if they had a hangover or something.

I absolutely LOVE your videos. I always pick apart aviation movies. I was an AO and attached to VFA-151 Vigilantes in Lemoore for 4 years and I just love it when I see Hollywood get the weapons or weapons systems completely wrong. I noticed that during the cockpit shots they were sitting in an ACES II seat which the Navy doesn't use. They should have been SJU-17s. Please keep the videos coming.... I love 'em!

Haha your the best. Love your movie reviews. You are my favorite RUclips personality
I’ve sat in a cf-18 as a twelve year old at Thunder in the Air, Thunder Bay’s last Airshow, and blew the pilots mind with all my nerdy ( actually really cool ) facts. Was told I would go far with that attitude. He forgot to mention it would cost $ and as a little First Nations boy, that automatically made flying out of reach lol.
    Maybe in my next life.

    • @CapStar362
      @CapStar362 3 года назад

the 'gun up scenes' , if you go back and look at it in the movie itself at timestamp 1H 41m for the next 30 seconds you will see the hill, they entered the field from the creek which was in a small creek basin, followed by a roughly 30 degree uphill trek into the elephant grass, so they are not just lobbying rounds into the sky, they are shooting uphill into the elephant grass, using suppressing fire to keep them down and unable to locate their attackers. which is a valid tactic in suppression in this type of scenario, its cat and mouse when you keep your enemies head suppressed into the grass.
