I was a Crew Chief on the F-16 for many years with the ANG. I can remember many extremely cold mornings at "O-dark-thirty" servicing LOX on all of the fliers. If you had time you would then service the non-fliers because if you let the oxygen system go to zero pressure a LOX system purge was required. With only a 9 liter capacity this task had to be accomplish about every other day. I had the pleasure later in my career to work with OBOGS equipped aircraft both Block 52 and 60. You mention the savings in support equipment with OBOGS but there was also a substantial savings in man hours for us Crew Dogs. Respect Sir and remember to check your 6!

I really love your channel, brother! Have you ever flown out of Smyrna, Tennessee? We’re spoiled here with air shows every time year or two going back to the 70’s when almost the entire focus of the airport was military, although it’s still an active Army base that had a Cobra squadron up until a few years ago. I grew up watching the air shows when Phantoms were the standard and a Harrier or F-117 Nighthawk were still such new technology it was borderline magical like the F-35’s are performing now with most the kinks worked out. We had the F-35, F-18 Super Hornet/Rhino, and Navy Growler demonstration teams on top of the Thunderbirds so it was an absolutely epic extended weekend for us air fanatics between practices and the shows. It’s at the top of my bucket list to get a ride in a fighter before I kick the bucket. 🤞

I was a crew chief on F-4E/G's. I used to have to fill the LOX bottles, and I would have to push the LOX cart from jet to jet. I would have to fill about 40 jets. I hate it. I would have to wear special protective clothes and asbestos gloves. LOX is -295° F. My favorite part about being a crew chief was harassing the air crews.

I was on the flight line in January 2016 when that pilot from the 21st lawndarted into the desert in Bagdad AZ. I remember watching every unit scrambling around like they normally do during an inflight emergency. Called my dispatcher and asked what was going on. He just hung up on me and came over the net with the news the jet went down for unknown reasons.

Funny, I'm a submariner. I've been down to 12% to help prevent fires. That's pretty low. Definitely messes with you. Fighter pilots aren't the only ones to deal with this. One way I could tell they were getting ready for a field day was when we ventihilated. Give us more energy to clean. Gotta love the Navy.

The clip of the hypoxia demo in the chamber... I was inside that day as an instructor, just out of view! Small world. That clip was from the Columbus AFB Physiology unit. The instructor lecturing, I'm still good friends with. That was back in the day when we would let one UPT student go off O2 at FL350. Very rapid onset of hypoxia at that altitude, TUC about a minute. AF eventually stopped those higher altitude hypoxia demos, and now everyone goes off at FL250 or is using ROBD. Great times, now I do the same work at NASA in Houston. Great video and explanations Hasard, appreciate your channel.

@@HasardLee That chamber hypoxia video was from circa 1997 - 2003. I retired out of CAFB and went straight to NASA. Loved pushing students through, and back then we had the parasail program also. Heard they finally dropped that program. And when that video was taken, all UPT students would have 2 chamber flights. One flight to FL350. And a bit later in the phyz portion one up to FL430. That was a gut buster, gas expansion approx. 9 times ground level, ugh. Well, appreciate all your videos. Pilot >Chief.... slight correction. In the old days of LOX... We ( crew chief ) had the LOX Cart ( shown ) which is full of LOX ... Liquid Oxygen which is stored -296°f ... it’s boiling point is -297°f at which point it becomes a gas.
We service the aircraft with LIQUID... ( it’s a process and I will explain if you ask ) ... that is transferring liquid from the ground cart to the LOX reservoir on board the aircraft.
The O2 that “YOU” breath is a gas that is produced by letting LIQUID OXYGEN boil off in a set of coils ( next to your right rudder pedal actuator) .... this “BOIL OFF” will produce a gaseous O2 into a pressure/warming coil for further warming as not to freeze your lungs... If you ever had a RED BALL to EOR for low ox press it is because the ground service handle was frozen in a slightly opened position and allowed gas to vent back to the Reservoir.
Crew chief clear on your left
