- In this video, I test one and two of the new Mars-Hydro SP-3000s in different coverage areas. I use 5 different PAR tests to explain and explore some of the key aspects of Grow Light Physics. Check out the 4x2 and 5x2 PAR tests with one SP-3000 and then the 4x4, 5x4, and 5x5 PAR tests with two!

I decided to go back to school for botany, but my school got rid of it so I'm now in ecology-conservation biology. How-where are you going to study "cannabis studies?" Its not legal in my state yet, i don't consume it, but it helped my aunt when she had cancer, and could probably supplement my income with "cannabis studies"

Wow, thanks for all the work and the info, it was very informative to say the least! You got me considering the SP3000 for my 3x4, I believe it would not be bad at all and could replace my 3 SF1000! It's rare that I see lights for a 3x4 setup and getting lights for this size is a bit tricky... But your calculator and this video did help me figure it out a little more. Thanks again!
Glad after all my searching about running and joining multiple 100-250 watt panel LED's, now I finally found the right terminology. That always helps. There's another mystery old technique or two around the internet I have finally found the terminology for as well, one regarding lighting and saving 30% in run time and cost's all while reducing nutrient demand, veg and flower time, but increasing quality, yield, and especially resins and tannins.

I went through the grow guide a few times before this video and one thing that never made sense to me until this video is the difference between PAR and PPF and PPFD. makes total sense now, definitely going to lower my lights for that high PPFD to get the most from the CO2. thanks!

Love your protocol and explanation of basic principles.. such as when area increases useable ppf will always increase due to more target canopy but even distribution of photons will always drop off. Most intrigued to see that even umols in center were lower in expanded grow area even though fixture was 4 cm closer. I used to install conviron growth chambers 30 years ago and teach greenhouse management labs at a university and this aspect of your explanation is the clearest, simplest approach i have seen.
So, to be clear . If one wants max production under a single light one would probably benefit from expanding the area as more useable photons will find green canopy to photosynthesize. If you expand too large some the peripheral areas will eventually fall below optimal levels and there will be a greater uneveness of light distribution which will affect uniformity of growth. If space is not a concern one can get slightly more yield per light by expanding the area covered, though yield per sq foot will decrease and uniformity of size and quality of flower will also vary more widely.
Not even to your part of using multiple fixtures but If a grower wants to max production from a precise area however, he will benefit from closer reflective walls and multiple fixtures [within economic and photo biological constraints such as 1000umols [without additional CO2 i imagine or without some way to move the light fixtures to prevent heat damage or light bleaching] though umol/J efficiency will drop and useable ppfs will drop

I appreciate you breaking this into comprehensible chunks of information. This is one of the best videos on PAR tests that I've seen.
I only have one suggestion. If you are putting the Mars Hydro SP-3000 in 2x4 or 4x4 grow tent, consider the tent size while air is being exhausted. I'm reading the length of the light is 42.5 In. That is uncomfortably close to the edges of a 2x4 grow tent. My 2x4 tent pulls in around 3 In on each side while air is being exhausted.
Although, you may be able to provide reverse air pressure with an intake fan or build some type of frame to protect your lights, these precautions should be taken when considering a light for use in a smaller area than suggested by the manufacturer.
Geez what size exhaust fan are you using? With a 4 inch from Mars, EVEN ON LEVEL 10/10 it barely pulls in about 1”
Love this video, you should take all the HPS comparisons and title that video specifically so that HPS users like myself can see exactly why to change. Just bought a Hydro SP3000 and can't wait for the massive heat reduction and all the other benefits once it arrives! It really is a no brainer, Thank you!

One other factor to consider that's not mentioned in this video. Foliage is not flat and it's not a dome. Having an array of lights (as compared to a point source, for example) allows the light to arrive at many angles. So the array will project light farther into the canopy and illuminate leaves farther down inside it. Not dissing the experimental techniques here at all. This was really well done.

Insane tests and explain, what a pleasure. Just one question, grow tents also have reflective bottoms and tops; would this affect plant growth ? Or exceed the 1000umol? If taking “ideaal” hanging high from these tests
Per Mars Hydro: For the SP 3000 and SP 6500 lights, the previous version is with IR and UV chips. Since March, we have moved the IR and UV from the SP 3000, SP 6500, and FC 6500 lights. Also, the new FC-E6500 light doesn't have IR and UV chips. The reason is that these lights' main customers are personal growers who pursue the best results or the commercial project customers; they prefer to independently control the IR and UV lights time, don't need the IR and UV chips on the light itself. Mars Hydro also will issue independent IR and UV lights in the second half of the year.
That is correct, and i have to say it's a bullcrap move from Mars Hydro.. I've read their poll on a forum, nobody voted to remove the UV & IR.. Most of people if not all of them voted to KEEP the UV & IR.. They are straight lying.. In some other post they said: ''UV & IR doesn't affect the grow too much and it's not needed'' but it is.. And they advertised the UV & IR for the same purpose in the first place..
I guess they realized how good of a light that was, and decided to earn more money without raising the price of the light.. It was perfect, now it's complicated and more expensive to buy separate lights..

I'm coming to this 2 years late, and I ahve not been through all of your videos or website. A few observations:
1. Have you run the same test multiple times to see how reproducible your results are?
2. I like the PPE and cost efficiency. Have you considered combining them into a lifecycle cost? A more expensive light that's far more efficient at producing photons from kilowatts might be cheaper for a 5 years lifecycle.
3. You mentioned coming up with a statistical model for quality of the PAR map vs subjective grade. That's a great idea.
4. I tried out the calculator last night for several lights and saw the number of lights calc for a given area. In line with this video, have you done any work on combining lights in different patterns to see what the optimal arrangement is for a given light and grow area format? It will change depending upon the PAR distribution, clearly.
I like you videos a lot. Right up the alley that I've been following with some custom made lights and purchased lights.

I was just reflecting on (BOOM! 😉) what you describe in the Total vs Useable PPF to... I'm a photographer and cinematographer and I often struggle to achieve convincing sky lighting. My LEDs are single chip 300w + 600w (Circular) See the Aperture 300d, incredible lights but having all that power in one chip presents the same spread problem as a HPS... You're dependent on light modifiers which lose you a stop or usually more of light...
However, this has got me thinking... We have so many light modifiers at our disposal! I'm used to making do and creating the light I need from what I have. What if we could experiment on more ideal tent geometries and materials/coatings than the standard "Box of mylar' we're all used to. I have a very expensive Parabolic light modifier by Profoto which works optical miracles from a single point. Also, I wonder what an innovative, mechanical light mover could do with a single 600w led chip moving it across the "Sky" of the tent through the day, mimicking the sun's movement...
It would be fascinating to experiment on techniques to save more photons with you but I'm in the UK.

I am working with a 9x9 area but will have 4 of these lights. I am arranging them at one side of the room since my AC and supplies will be on the other side. Not using a tent. My question is would it be better to arrange them to fill a 5x9 area running long ways, or to fill a 4x9 area running sideways? Hopefully you can picture what I am getting at..

Is there a possibility we'll get light spectrums along with the rest of the videos? I've heard the quality from a CMH is better than the quality from any HID and LED. Which according to terpenes levels, it seems accurate. So I'm trying to find an led that does the same/similar thing.

Thx for putting in so much effort, but - you guessed it - we wanna know if you need 3 or 4 of those for a 5x5 to have that sweet even par map.
Would you consider doing test where you lower lights but use light mover to even out the distribution and perhaps a DLI meter to work out how far you can move a light but keeps intensity at 1000 umols [averaged] without photo bleaching or heat stress?

I just look for a light's kelvin rating. Usually between 4k-6.5k.
Good strategy so far to me.
Since many grow lights exceed my budget,
I look for kelvin and buy a light based on that. 6.5k for autum fall crops, 3k-4k for spring/summer

Got 2 of these in a 4x4 growing cucumbers. I dont even need to run them at full power. They are really bright even at 50% power. Best part is that i can run 2 at 50% which gives the same power draw as one, but with a much better coverage area. They are LED lights on steroids. Only downside is the amount of heat they radiate. At 50% power im running my exhaust on low-medium which is virtually silent and holding a steady internal temp of 83F degrees with a 72F degrees ambient temp. Its kind of a good thing though when non-scorching heat is needed.
Yeah, running dim can actually generate more heat from the driver. Do you have the drivers mounted on the light still - I bet moving them out of the space would really help reduce the heat. Grower Love
Yeah move the drivers to top of the tent. I put a plywood board on the roof to support all the exhaust fan and drivers. I have no motors running in the tent other then the occilating fans.
Is this test done on a 120v or 220v plug?
I have a 4x3 tent, would ot be a bad idea to get 2 of these lights? Or would 1 light be good enough?
1 is good enough... You could put a little more light into 12 sq feet, but one SP3000 will do a really good job on its own. Two would certainly be overkill and require you to dim them. I am going to use the SP3000 on my personal grow, really like the fixture. Grower Love
