Dyslexia is just a brain wired differently, not wrong. Similar to how some are left handed instead of right handed. Getting a diagnosis isn't going to make a kid make excuses in learning, but it will help them to understand how and why they learn differently, and not think they're stupid. 1 in 5 are dyslexic, but it tends to run in families.

My MIL specializes in teaching dyslexic children how to read and has great success. Her big takeaway is that it is not something wrong with them, but just a difference in learning style and that they tend to be incredibly gifted people in other ways because of the way their brains work. They are picture thinkers. For them, she is very against phonics because their brains don't work that way. However, my oldest is not dyslexic and she still struggles with the fact that I am using phonics with him.
