THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING🙏🏾🫶🏾! I’ve been searching for a broth recipes for my husband because he’s having a procedure and he hast to do three days of clear liquids. He’s the kind of guy who is fast moving and always busy so getting things done quickly, especially when it comes to eating as one of those things, even if I’m in the kitchen. So I want him to be able to have nutritious broth and not just the stuff out of a box or a can. So this recipe is definitely getting added to my list😊!
Great choice! I'm happy to hear that you made this soup for your husband! Seaweed soup is known not only for being tasty and healthy, but also for helping to remove harmful substances from the body. That’s why in Korea, new mothers eat rice and seaweed soup for a month after giving birth.

I am from Dolsan-eup, Yeosu. That's where I live with my family. Long story short, I got adopted and have been in US since I was 8. I haven't had it since I left Korea. My birthday is coming up in a month, I am going to try to make this. If it goes well, I will be making some for my boys birthdays. Thanks for sharing these videos and recipes.
April 20th is my moms birthday. You up loaded at just the perfect time. I recently asked my mom about trying it and she explained just how important it was in Korean culture. My mom had a hard life and was moved to the states after her mom passed away. She told me this past week she hasn’t had miyeok-guk since losing her mother as a young girl. I’m not her biological daughter but she has been a wonderful mother to me and I just wanted to learn to make it for her to show her just how much I love her and how important she is to me. She was meant to be my mom she even shares the same birthday as my birth mom. I hope to pass this to my little sister and dad so they can make mom birthday soup when I can’t be there.
You are such an adorable person! That's a great idea to ask your sister and dad make this soup for your mother. She will be very impressed and never forget about it. Your comments makes us feel so warm! Update me, please.
@@Maangchi She’s been a great mom to me for almost 16 years now! She doesn’t talk much about her family or her life before she was sent stateside but it broke my heart when she was telling me she hasn’t had it since losing her mom. I will gladly update you! My heart is excited to give back some of the love she has given me all these years.
@@Maangchi A couple of months late but I was finally able to see my mom and make it for her. She loves it! Thank you so much for your wonderful recipe! 🥰
When I was caring for Korean exchange students, I always tried to remember their birthdays and cooked it for them. But there was one that remembered mine and suprised me with 미역국 and other little foods. "언니, you always spoil us, now I am going to spoil you!" She was so cute. I also wanted to know how she made it and she admitted that she called her mom to instruct her. So we got on a call with her mom and she explained to me (in very slow Korean bc my Korean is not great) how she made it. I will always remember that. Now my 미역국 is a mixture of her recipe and yours Maangchi 😄🙈❤
My Korean roommate once made me Miyeokguk and it was one of THE most sublimely delicious things I have ever had the priviledge to eat. The seaweed was silky and plump; the beef, tender and juicy; the broth rich and flavourful. I literally felt rejuvenated after eating it--just suffused with a bone-deep sense of wellbeing. And all she did was put some seaweed, water, beef, and a couple cloves of garlic into a pot and let it all simmer together till the meat was tender. Mind. Blown. Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe! You're one of my favourite cooking channels.
"The seaweed was silky and plump; the beef, tender and juicy; the broth rich and flavourful." It sounds so delicious! : ) I'm going to make miyeokguk today!
I made this last week for my grandbaby's 9th birthday. She asked for that and bulgogi for her special meal. You are rubbing off on her Maangchi! She always watches your videos with me . I love it!!!

I need to make sure I take care of myself properly when I deliver my baby as well this will be in my diet for sure since I love seaweed in general.
Thank you very much for this recipe! My roommate is Korean and tomorrow is her birthday, but due to the current situation, we wouldn't be able to celebrate it like we always do so I plan to make this soup for her tomorrow as a small surprise... wish me luck :D

I have that exact same blue pot. That makes me so happy. When I was pregnant with my first child over 8yrs ago, I asked a local Korean restauranteur if I could get a batch of Miyeok Guk and she provided me a huge amount with pleasure. It was delicious and I could feel how good it was for me and the newborn.
This is so similar to the collard greens I grew up eating in Alabama and Georgia! Greens simmered with flavoring and fatty meat, traditionally a ham hock - so delicious and nutritious! We make it every New Years day with black eyed peas for good wealth and good luck. Serve with pepper vinegar and pickapepper sauce for the authentic experience!

This is a really great recipe! I really appreciate you providing demonstrations of your dishes. Many years ago, I tried this soup at a Korean church without knowing the proper name of it. To think that after all this time, I'd be making it at home and it just feels natural. Thanks!
Im giving birth to my second child any time this month. My korean husband will be coocking this dish for me..but i already tried this dish before...so yummy.
You're such a joy to watch and listen to 🤗 you are the reason I got interested in Korean cooking 6 years ago. Send you big hugs from across the ocean!! ❤️❤️
I watched 1/2 dozen videos and this one is the best. Soup turned out so delicious and I can’t wait to eat it after I deliver. I also included wild mushrooms and ginger to mine.
I also have a fun story about miyeokguk! My mom and I took our first trip to South Korea in September around her birthday and I wanted her to be able to celebrate in a more Korean way but as a surprise! So I asked my friend who lives there to cook the soup for my mom while we were out being tourists. The whole plan almost failed because my mom didn't want to go out at first! I had to guilt her into it! I was worried she would be tired or in a bad mood but she had fun and then she was so surprised when we came back and there was all this yummy food cooked for her!! I appreciate my friend and her sister sooooooo much for all their help and it was one of our favorite moments of the trip! Now, with this recipe, I can try making it again to capture the memory!
I always catch myself smiling throughout all your videos. If you knew me, you’d know what a big deal that is! I just love your positive energy (and the food of course).
Everything about this video is so lovely! The food, the snow, your beautiful wardrobe and that pinch of jazz. Most of all is you. Your videos are wonderful. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much Maangchi! You are always the sweetest. I will make this for my daughter after she delivers my first grandbaby (it’s a girl) in February. Her delivery date is my birthday 2/17 so I hope and pray for a healthy strong baby and safe delivery for my daughter. What a birthday present this will be for me! I make this quite often on my childrens birthdays as well ♥️
In Korea, after a woman delivers a baby, her mother or mother-in-law usually takes care of her and the baby for a while, so the mom can recover fully. I'm not sure you already know about this or not but what you are saying that you are planning to make this soup for your daughter is exactly what Korean mothers and mothers-in-law do! : ) I'm also praying for your daughter's safe delivery! You will be such a good grandma!
This is perfect to try! I usually order at Korean Restaurant but this time can make at home! My son just had his 4 year old birthday on Valentine's Day and then was my birthday on the 16th, so this will be perfect to make at home!

Thank you, Maangchi! It looks delicious! Soup is my favorite meal!! I love seeing a bit of N Y since my son works in Manhattan, and lives in Brooklyn! Thank you!
It’s great for milk supply. Whenever my milk supply felt like it went down with my first child, I’d eat some seaweed soup and it would come right up again.
If you really want to taste this soup, use vegetable stock instead of water and add some perilla seeds powder (about 1/4 cup for this recipe), and use soup soy sauce or salt to your taste instead of fish sauce. Korean temple cuisine makes that way. Perilla seeds powder makes the soup flavorful and nutty. I wish I can buy your book right now, but I still need to save money to buy your book it is quite expensive here. Keep posting and stay as down to earth as you are! 🥰
Maangchi i love that you added a little story while cooking, its so touching that i watched twice. As a new immigrant I can feel how touching you were when someone treated you so kind at while adapting the culture. I wish you well and your soup and story warmed my blue heart tonight . I will make the soup this weekend eat like you 😍
You know if a soup can recover a woman from creating an entire human being and from childbirth, then this is some super food soup right here! 🥰🥰🥰 I'm definitely going to try make this. Thank you Maangchi! 🥰💕🙏🏼
I learned so many good things about korean food from this channel. From the basic kimchi to kimchi stew, kimbap, to this seaweed soup. Everything is so easy and delicious. My fav is kimchi. They are as good as store bought (even better)! Thank you for sharing 😊
Looks like most of the sides are cold, I don't know about everyone, but i usually keep the sprouts, kimchee & pickled veg on hand to make easy sides, rice is just expected (everyday 😉)... really just effort for the mushrooms... plus with a one hour cook time, this is definitely simple, easy to clean up as it bubbles away on the stove top.
Well, those are side dishes that are cooked in big batches and last for long, as they eat them with every meal. Most people buy them already prepared :)
Maangi: your cultural stories are wonderful, I am learning so much. Your food makes a complex recipe within reach of simple cooks like me. I have already made several recipes. Thank you.
This is my everyday menu, never get bored of warm miyeokguk with kimchi. I used other recipe which can be done in ten minutes, but I will try your receipt, it will give me new taste of miyeokguk😄 thank you maangchi❤️
Love the scenery there. We got lots of snow here in MN. In my culture, after we give birth we have to stay on a chicken diet for a whole month too. Boiled chicken with lemongrass and herbs.
*Thank you for showing nice view(white snow) in New York. You're so cute😊 Every home in Korea has their own version of MIYEOK soup. I wanna try yours! My daughter's birthday is coming* 😄
I was so excited I can get miyeok in my town now!! My stylist (who's like my other mama) made this for me after both my babies and even when I miscarried 💝 I've been CRAZING it while I've had some health issues, so I'm making myself a big pot 🤤 before we'd have to go to the larger city 3 hours away to get Korean ingredients. But our local Chinese market has started bringing in lots of Korean producta as we have a large population of Korean college students now 💖
my Grandma and aunty always made this for us. I like all the banchan you are eating. I think that namul was the first banchan I was taught to make. Yes, I was taught that this soup is very important to us Korean people.

Hi Maangchi ! I’ m from Morocco ( but raised and lived in Europe ) and in our culture in Morocco the mum after giving birth eat one dish ( not for a month juste a few times ) made with some kind of salted pancakes very thin, with a sauce made with : lentils, fenugreek , chicken and onions . Called : Rfissa . Love the snow as a borned alps ❄️❄️ 🌨🌨
Today I am going to cook this Birthday soup for the first time. I am using Chicken breast as meat - that's what I had in my Freezer. Last year I wanted to cook it too, but didn't have seaweed at home. This year I am prepared, so later I will eat a bowl of this soup with a bowl of rice. Fingers crossed it will be as delicious as I hope it will be. Thank you Maangchi for all the amazing videos, allowing a middle aged Danish woman to learn how to cook Korean food.
In 1975 my son was born in Korea while I was stationed there with the United States Army. I remember the soup but maybe not as fondly as I should. For a foreigner eating this every day for a month can get very tiresome so by the end of the month I never wanted to see it ever again. But for old times sake I may have my caregivers make it a few more timees. Thanks.
As I read the story of Julia Kim of Naju Korea.. I wondered how to cook a seaweed soup loved by her husband so I found this wonderful youtube channel. I love your channel Maangchi! Thanks to the Life Story Prepared By The Lord: Julia Kim of Naju Korea.. Her story lead me to find this channel :)
Funny thing, you mentioned that your friend Jeanne didn't like Miyeokguk...she said it was"slimy". Well, I felt that way for years and then when I was in Korea and had my baby, I was given this soup breakfast/lunch/dinner for a month and I loved it!!!! I still crave it and make it often. Its total comfort food for this American. Sometimes, I cheat and put browned ground beef in it and of course "sesame oil"!!!! Love you and your recipes! Thank you!
No way! My birthday was yesterday when you posted this, lol! I will definitely have to try this delicious looking soup!! It's been super snowy and cold here, too (Chicago)!
I've made miyeokguk a few times, but this video did bring back an interesting memory to me: in 2013, I went to South Korea for a one-month research stay. The plane ride over from JFK to ICN (on Korean Air) was one of the first times I had Korean food, and the soup they included was miyeokguk (interesting in a good way). I remember so much of that trip so fondly, even eight (!) years later...
I cook it today so I want to watch your video again, and of course again when I cook it each time :). You know I like your story which is very useful and meaningful to me. You are great person the way you are! Thanks for your good intention via each video. Take care and be happy!

she's so cute and positive and her videos are so comforting to watch her cooking comfort food!
You're such a joy to watch and listen to 🤗 you are the reason I got interested in Korean cooking 6 years ago. Send you big hugs from across the ocean!! ❤️❤️
Awesome! Thank you!
I watched 1/2 dozen videos and this one is the best. Soup turned out so delicious and I can’t wait to eat it after I deliver. I also included wild mushrooms and ginger to mine.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Soup sounds so good right now. Thank you for sharing the recipe and your beautiful NY snow!
What a touching story it is! 👍
Today’s my birthday 🎂 this is so perfect. Thanks maangchi!
@805amy Happy Birthday! 🎉
HAPPY BIRYHDAY FELLOQ AQUARIAN 🤍🤍🤍 MIne is tomorrow 🥰
I love how her videos bring me comfort
My husband's birthday is in 3 days and we're expecting our baby any day now, it almost feels like this recipe was meant for me lol
Congratulations!
@@healinggrounds19 thank you! 😊
All the best for a smooth delivery and a healthy baby and healthy you.
My bday is in 3 days too! Congrats!
Congrats!
I always catch myself smiling throughout all your videos. If you knew me, you’d know what a big deal that is! I just love your positive energy (and the food of course).
I love you Maangchi!!!! You’re sooo cute and your recipes are the BOMB!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I also love him❤️
Everything about this video is so lovely! The food, the snow, your beautiful wardrobe and that pinch of jazz. Most of all is you. Your videos are wonderful. Thank you so much!
the way you always have stories behind every meal, I always cry with you here. much love from Indonesia! ❤🤍
What a beautiful story about your friend !!!!!!!! I love when people do little things for others!!!!!!!!!!💕💕💕
I'm also praying for your daughter's safe delivery! You will be such a good grandma!
This is perfect to try! I usually order at Korean Restaurant but this time can make at home! My son just had his 4 year old birthday on Valentine's Day and then was my birthday on the 16th, so this will be perfect to make at home!
So refreshing to add n mix up the rice with the soup... 🤤
보기만 해도 속이 따뜻해지고 건강해지는 기분이 들어요
너무 좋습니다~
AHHHH THIS VIDEO IS WONDERFULLY MADE! The BIG CRISP audio, the sharp visuals of every ingredient the sounds of all the movements including the running water 💦 while washing hands, the cutting of the seaweed the beautiful green cast iron pot lid sound, your glittery headband lol 😆 the incredible snow ❄️ and everything is so perfect!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼😎🥳😇💞💞💞
Thank you, Maangchi! It looks delicious! Soup is my favorite meal!! I love seeing a bit of N Y since my son works in Manhattan, and lives in Brooklyn! Thank you!
I made this for my sister today. She just had a baby a few days ago. It was my first time making it. She really enjoyed it.
Wonderful!👏
It’s great for milk supply. Whenever my milk supply felt like it went down with my first child, I’d eat some seaweed soup and it would come right up again.
@@umiluv thanks for the tip! I will let her know
Im about to do the same thing for myself.
Enjoy. It’s delicious
Best soup ever! I had it at a Korean church it was divine.
I wanted more and more and more.
Sooo simple but Soo good.
Thank you Maangchi! Because of your videos,I can make Korean food at home!
That's great!
How to make this soup vegetarian? No beef n fish sauce so what else can I add to replace them?
If you really want to taste this soup, use vegetable stock instead of water and add some perilla seeds powder (about 1/4 cup for this recipe), and use soup soy sauce or salt to your taste instead of fish sauce. Korean temple cuisine makes that way. Perilla seeds powder makes the soup flavorful and nutty.

Salt? Did you add salt?
This is my favorite. I have been making this with a different method in a slow cooker for years and had no idea it was a real dish. That's awesome. 🙂
The Queen of Korean soup shows us the fundamentals and one of the most important soups to master in Korea:) My hat goes off to you❤️
I just heard about this, I got so curious on how it's made, what's inside, the story behind it, how and when you eat it. I clicked on your video and it looked so delightful and delicious! I have to try it some time. Can you make this and eat it whenever you want or is it especially for birthdays?
You can make and eat this soup anytime.
@@Maangchi Amazing! Looking forward to try it! 😋
I loooove this soup! I followed on what you showed here, cooked it and it is soooo delicious! Even in a warm weather like here in Manila I still enjoy yummy soups like Miyeokguk! Thanks Maangchi! I wish I can buy your book right now, but I still need to save money to buy your book it is quite expensive here. Keep posting and stay as down to earth as you are! 🥰
👍
Maangchi i love that you added a little story while cooking, its so touching that i watched twice. As a new immigrant I can feel how touching you were when someone treated you so kind at while adapting the culture. I wish you well and your soup and story warmed my blue heart tonight . I will make the soup this weekend eat like you 😍
❤️
You know if a soup can recover a woman from creating an entire human being and from childbirth, then this is some super food soup right here! 🥰🥰🥰 I'm definitely going to try make this. Thank you Maangchi! 🥰💕🙏🏼
I learned so many good things about korean food from this channel. From the basic kimchi to kimchi stew, kimbap, to this seaweed soup. Everything is so easy and delicious. My fav is kimchi. They are as good as store bought (even better)! Thank you for sharing 😊
I'm so glad you've enjoyed exploring Korean cooking through through my channel!
Kimchi is truly a standout, isn't it? Happy cooking!
Maangchi: My Simple lunch
Me: Uhhh there's 7 dishes. What's a complex lunch?!?!?
Looks like most of the sides are cold, I don't know about everyone, but i usually keep the sprouts, kimchee & pickled veg on hand to make easy sides, rice is just expected (everyday 😉)... really just effort for the mushrooms... plus with a one hour cook time, this is definitely simple, easy to clean up as it bubbles away on the stove top.
Well, those are side dishes that are cooked in big batches and last for long, as they eat them with every meal. Most people buy them already prepared :)
@@katinapactol-baez1317 I think he was referring to the number of dishes rather than to the effort to prepare the lunch.
Maangi: your cultural stories are wonderful, I am learning so much. Your food makes a complex recipe within reach of simple cooks like me. I have already made several recipes. Thank you.
😂🤣😄 cute comment 😉
I love how you also talk about Korean culture and your memories it’s beautiful
This is my everyday menu, never get bored of warm miyeokguk with kimchi. I used other recipe which can be done in ten minutes, but I will try your receipt, it will give me new taste of miyeokguk😄 thank you maangchi❤️
Love the scenery there. We got lots of snow here in MN. In my culture, after we give birth we have to stay on a chicken diet for a whole month too. Boiled chicken with lemongrass and herbs.
Hmong?
@@Maangchi Yes!
*Thank you for showing nice view(white snow) in New York. You're so cute😊 Every home in Korea has their own version of MIYEOK soup. I wanna try yours! My daughter's birthday is coming* 😄

that was such a beautiful story maangchi ! thank you for sharing it with us :)
Wow! Brings back memories of my trip to Seoul. Will go hunt for the seaweed & try to make the soup. Thanks Maangchi for sharing.
Woooow, it's my birthday today! Really! What surprise! 🤩 I'll think this soup is for me! Thanks a lot, I'll watch and try as soon as! 😍
Aye! Birthday buddies!
Happy birthday!

I made this soup from this recipe and it’s the best one I’ve made. I eat it all the time. Especially when I’m sick.
👍
Hi Maangchi😍💞, thanks for all your beautiful, and yummy recipes💓
Wow now i know why my korean friend was so touch when i sent him miyeokguk on his birthday. Thank you Maangchi
요즘은 산후조리원 가면 미역국을 소고기 북어 광어 들깨가루 푼것 등등...다양한 종류로 나와서 좋더라구요...
Good luck with making delicious miyeokguk!
@@Maangchi Thank you - it tasted so good.
So how did it turn out?
Oooh I'm gonna have to try it with chicken breast too. Maybe with a bit of chicken skin? I'll make some next week
Thanks.
Thank you for leaving a nice message here and share with all of my viewers. Stay healthy for long long time!
My mother in law makes it for us for all birthdays and after I had my baby. So spoiled!
고기를 큼직하게 넣으시니까 더 먹음직스러워보이네요^^ 미역국 언제 먹어도 넘 맛있어요🍀
Funny thing, you mentioned that your friend Jeanne didn't like Miyeokguk...she said it was"slimy". Well, I felt that way for years and then when I was in Korea and had my baby, I was given this soup breakfast/lunch/dinner for a month and I loved it!!!! I still crave it and make it often. Its total comfort food for this American. Sometimes, I cheat and put browned ground beef in it and of course "sesame oil"!!!! Love you and your recipes! Thank you!
Reading your comments makes me feel like miyeokguk suddenly. : ) I should make it tomorrow. Happy cooking!
@@Maangchi Yes, you should. I will too!
No way! My birthday was yesterday when you posted this, lol! I will definitely have to try this delicious looking soup!! It's been super snowy and cold here, too (Chicago)!

Loved the outside scene! Also, this video quality is stellar! Thanks for another great video! :)
I followed your recipe today, it came out super delicious! 감사합니다!
Great!!
우와~~ 소고기 미역국❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️선생님께서 끊이시니 더 더 맛있어보여요!!!!! 미역국은 밥말아먹어야 제격이죠~~ㅋㅋ 오늘도 감사합니다!
I cook it today so I want to watch your video again, and of course again when I cook it each time :). You know I like your story which is very useful and meaningful to me.
You are great person the way you are! Thanks for your good intention via each video. Take care and be happy!
I make this soup so much... I need to cut out fat out of my diet since I'm a diabetic. I made it with bison. It came out just as yummy.
My favorite soup..... my mother made it often when we were little and when I had my children, she made it for me.... said it would help keep up my milk supply. Thank you for making this video.
That looks so good. Going to a Korean market this week. Hope I can find this seaweed!
Maangchi, I love to watch your video to learn Korean's foods but more is entertainment. Thanks,. You're truly a real actress and a good teacher.
