Great 'how too' and money saving clip presented. I remember this 2.56 12 bolt posi on one of my cars, replacing burnt clutch plates many years ago. The preload plates were always the scary parts, I used a clamp AND The 1/4 inch bolts, those wily springs were just waiting to break free. If I would have known a year ago, I still had the carrier hanging around, for the price of shipping you would have had it, everybody else was turning their noses up at it. Thanks again for posting!
One mans trash is another mans treasure... for my uses a 2.56 gear with a wide ratio 4 speed is the perfect thing. Gas mileage didn't seem to improve much but cruising at 85-90 miles an hour doesn't overheat the engine and oil consumption is down by a lot. Leaky seals btw, not rings. Thanks for watching brother.
Thank you, Invincible Extremes. I'm just about to take apart the LSD and refresh it. Total rookie here, so your video is appreciated. I have a 1994 Trans Am World Challenge GT race car with a 12-bolt Posi.
I know this is a old video, but I just wanted to say thanks man, good job. All I needed to know about the spring pack! Only gear heads work on their stuff in their dining room's! Love it ! Way better than anything else I seen on RUclips
One thing you need to check is the backlash between the spider gears and the side gears. This is adjusted by adding or removing shims behind the clutch pack.
A true gearhead, working on the kitchen table. Thanks for the refresher. Need to redo a 8.5 10 bolt, and this brought back some memories. P.S. I hope you've purchased a 24 oz ball peen, and got rid of the carpenters hammer. :D
My shims moved while putting the disc brakes, so now I'll have to move the center springs. I need to do it while still on the car. Thanks for the help I never pay anyone for something I can do myself, thank GOD.
Thank you, hope it helps out someone once they realise that you can use a dirt cheap ($150 shipped) 30 spline 12 bolt truck posi to build up a 30 spline car posi carrier. 300 bucks total for a complete 2 series posi unit for the 69 chevelle 12 bolt going in my 67 gto aint a bad price... beats 450 for a new aftermarket one. Of course every blue moon you can find used posi for 200 or so but i need to get that tempest on the road asap... ;-)
Invincible Extremes the most imformative car show on youtube. roadkill is fun and all, but your what holds me over until the next roadkill. you are just as good as them, and in some respects even better! dont change a thing about what you do, and how you do it. all of your videos are fun, and imformative, a balance many people cant strike. i thank you good sir for your videos
Thanks you give me too much credit. And yes, i have no plans on changing much, but as time goes on the footage will be getting better, the next step is to snag some cheap action cameras so the ride along footage will be a "compound" shot, from by the rear wheals and such, not just staring down my hood... but no fear, i'll ALWAYS bring detailed videos on the absolute best "bang for buck" hot rodding tech how to... because driving a muscle car of some sort every single day and a few times across the country brings a wealth of knowledge that can only be earned via blood sweat and tears... theres just no way around it. Hopefully we'll soon be seeing videos of whatever coolness guys like you will be putting togwther. ;-)
Sweet vid, love it... use a brass or plastic hammer though. Possibly if nothing else put duct tape or something softer on end of your regular hammer / punch.
I find the video very informative, but not matching the title . It may be a matter of opinion, but I consider rebuilding to be a full tear down and inspection, I would consider this more of a quick inspection and conversion. I have a thousand compliments for the video, but I feel misled by the title. I'll check out your other stuff and see if it's something I need to subscribe to
Thanks for your input. You would literally use the exact same procedure to rebuild it. Only you'd be using new clutches, springs or spider gear components.
Just bought a used series 2 posi unit in 2.56, the springs did not seem very strong. wondering if I should replace before installing under my 69 GS, tired of the 3.90s... at least saw them rocking a bit when spinning it..
@@InvincibleExtremes I see everyone saying I need to pull carrier out to so this, why is that, I see no reason I could not spin carrier in housing under car and pull preload springs out then gears out etc..
Many thanks for your excellent rear axle how to videos. I've been following this "series" of videos with great interest! Last year i did a read out of the identification code on the rear axle of my -73 Firebird. The code is located on the front face of the right-hand axle tube btw ( punched directly into the tube ). Mine reads GY G113 1G This should translate into a Chevrolet Positraction diff with 3.08:1 ratio. I was thinking about rebuilding the gears to get a lower geared rear end. Any suggestions? It's a 400 engine with a TH400 transmission btw
I'm guessing its an 8.5" "BIG" 10 bolt, so its plenty strong for your application. And gears are a dime a dozen. By lower you mean like a 2.42 or something or like a 3.23 for more acceleration? Anything below a 2.73 in those rears will need a new carrier. So unless you want to buy a different posi (you don't, they're expensive) you're stuck using 2.73 through 4.11 or something. As far as changing them, its as simple as changing the gears in my 12 bolts. Just gotta use the right amount of shims to make sure everything works together like it should... oh and torque down the pinion nut because mine came loose one time and destroyed my favorite gears in my firebird.... 331's and now i'm using a set of 3.55's i got for 25 bucks. They're a little much and make highway driving a pain.
I meant lower to make highway driving more pleasant. It's been years since i drove the car due to engine rebuild and other stuff happening in my life so i guess i need to make it roadworthy first, rebuild the Th400 which is not engaging properly and then do a reevaluation on the rear axle ratio then. I just remembered that i didn't had the correct size tires on the car and that the new tires most likely would help on the high rpm when on the highway. I guess 2:73 is plenty enough for the roads here in north of Norway so i will never have to go further than that. Thanks for the advices!
Bigger springs will give you a tighter lsd that acts more and more like a spool. Bigger tires will require stiffer springs. Too lose an lsd will leave fibers in your oil and destroy the diff over time
can this be done with rear end still in car....when i pulled axles to replace bearings and seals my spider gear washers fell out. trying to get them back in without a nightmare...lol
@@InvincibleExtremes thanks for the reply, I have been trying to get the washers back in...I figured if they fell out they should go back in....but now I am thinking I have to remove the spring plate assembly to access the spider gears and get the washers back in place. I just don't want to get too far into this that I can't get it back together by myself. I am concerned about the side gears falling out of place and loosing track of how they go back in and then getting the spring plates back in place. Anyway I am trying to stay positive and have fun with this...but I am a little worried...hahaha.
@@InvincibleExtremes Thanks for being friendly. I have not tried anything yet but just eyeing it....it looks likes the ring gear may interfere with spring plate removal. I am just wondering if I decided to remove the whole carrier from the housing and removed the ring gear to get the thrust washers back in....can I just re install eveything....I don't need to get into any extra set ups like backlash etc????
Nice video. I like hearing your kids playin around in the back ground.
Yeah the kids are awesome. Love them
This was a very informative video.I wondered about messing with those springs.Job well done, you answered a lot of questions.

Thanks. I ended up adding some shims to make the spider gears have even less slop.
Thank you for sharing this it really helped me on my project
Thanks. It's a little harder when doing it for real because you want it as tight as possible but you at least get the idea
That was a nice helpful video you made. Good stuff to know.
Thanks!
Good stuff!!
Not sure when video was made but great explanation. Will be doing my own this weekend. THANKS 👍🏿.

Love your video, you should do more breakdowns. You made a difficult looking item feel like changing a tire. I feel like I can do this myself.

nice vid 👍👍 .what truck can I find a 30 spline unit
MR_getinthere any truck 12 bolt is going to be 30 spline
Invincible Extremes Muscle Cars Garage im sorry i have a 8.5
MR_getinthere well then you have a 10 bolt. you can still do all these things, just to a 10 bolt 8.5 posi...
Where do i buy the spring pack and clutches and steels?
Ebay is a good start
Is this the same to a chevy avalanche spider gears just the gears?
Similar yes
What is the difference in the 400lb and 600lb springs and etc? What is tge benefits of going to bigger springs? Thanks
