The Talos Principle [No Spoiler edition]

- WELL, this was a really difficult video to make! To some how explain the Talos Principle without giving anything important about it. The video goes in stages:
0:00 - No spoilers, you won't know what the heck it's about
3:19 - Describing what the game is, spoiling nothing that 5 minutes of gameplay wouldn't reveal
5:03 - A few reveals, but no spoilers. Just in case you're still wondering whether this is the game for you.
See the follow-up spoiler video here: • The Talos Principle - ... - Игры
I didn't finish your video BUT I did go buy The Talos Principle. And I shall be back.

The Talos Principle is my favorite game ever, second to none.
I have played games for over 40 years, so that is something.
This game is like a jewel, a work of art.
Phillip's review is great, he managed to put down in words the incredible feeling of playing this game.
Cheers.

Hey, it's been about a week since I bought this game, and I've finished it. I'm glad I saw this video, because I loved this game. It really did leave an impact on me, kind of like when you finish reading a book you're deeply invested in. I even remembered to come back and look for the spoiler video! (Which I really can't wait for). I think that speaks to the brilliant nature of your videos.
I played this game years ago and it is my favorite game I have ever played. I completed EVERYTHING in the first and second. It's made me love puzzle games so hard and nothing has ever challenged me as much as this one sadly.
"It will require a bit of faith."
I see what you did there
Can't believe I fell for that. I still hate myself for being so naive.
@@sn1p4m4n That was incredibly stupid and in hindsight pretty obvious
"In the beginning were the words..... "
Loved this game, more challenging than Portal 2 but yet didn't feel like a copycat somehow. Might give a slight edge to Portal 2 overall (especially due to GladOS, Wheatley, Cave Johnson, Half-Life tie-in etc.) But man is this game underrated. The fact that this game is now being covered by my favorite RUclipsr somehow is giving ME validation is hilarious
"... and the words made the world." :)
It's a really nice game, I bought it two years ago because it was on sale and never played it, but one day I was so bored I booted up the game and I'm so glad I did it, because it was the only thing I played that week, and I enjoyed every minute of it, I still have to play through the dlc, but I encourage everyone to buy it, it's on sale right now and the price is basically a steal for what you are getting out of this game!
Play through the dlc. It's just as good as the main game, if not better.
The DLC isn't as good as the main game, but it's still good. I mainly just missed the level of existential quandaries present in the main game, as the DLC leans a bit heavier on humor and just existing in the world instead of thinking about it. Honestly I'm worried about how I've heard talk that they're going to make a sequel, as I can't really see them capturing that same level of thought provocation again. I would love to be proven wrong, though.
Edit: Oh, and the stars are *required* for the good ending which is BS. Not all of them, but I think you need all but two IIRC. Had to cheat for a number of them, which is something I hated doing in The Talos Principle.
DLC is quite difficult. Didn't manage through, while completed the entire game pretty easily
I tried convincing literally all of my friends to play this game. No one has done it. It's the best game I've ever played, it touched me, made me think, and I had found it one night while aimlessly searching steam. Never thought to consider the aspect of loneliness as a part of the game. It really is just something that keeps on giving, and I wish everyone would just play this fucking game.
@@2kliksphilip Viddy well, brother
Not all people like puzzle and storytelling games.
@@2kliksphilip That sounds about right, which is why I gave up mostly, but not entirely. I get why you can only keep poking at people so much, but they just don't understand what they are missing. I had a friend who was bored enough to drop some money on the game, after literally two years of telling them to get it. He messed me after only a few hours in the game with "Talos is fucking aggravating and addicting I love it". I have another friend who I managed to scam a promise of him to try it, and I can't wait for his reaction. I feel like a god damn missionary for this game, but it's really not just a game, it's an introspective and beautiful experience. The game speaks for itself, but you spoke for it anyways, and I appreciate that a lot. Keep up the great work brother
If this was up your alley you probably know about it already, but do give Outer Wilds a try! Similar recommendation though: don't read much on it beforehand.

Man, I love this game so much! I am so happy you decided to make a video on it! I truly belive it's quite underplayed for the quality it has.
Could not agree more. Probably the best game experience I ever had. The puzzles themselves are mostly fun and beating them is oddly rewarding. About the story aspect I absolutely share your feelings. Completing the story and getting an answer to all the unsolved questions is what really motivated me finishing the game.
Your video reminded me how awesome this game is and how much I enjoyed it. Guess it's time to play through it again :)
The Talos Principle was my nightmare for years. It was one of the games that got me into philosophy, to understand humanity better. It was where my life changed and i saw everything with a different light, how beautiful is the world and the things we have are wonderful.
Truly, listening to Alexandra's tapes, reading the memories of the humans that appear to be gone for years and years is just heartbreaking but at the same time so fucking beautiful.
It really gives you hope in what the darkness took away in the first place. Never stopped playing and finished the game in 2 days in the summer of 2016, truly changed my life, i still highly suggest it to everyone to experience it, because honestly there's, atleast not for me, anything like it.
After Hexcells was a resoundingly wonderful recommendation, I trust your judgement and will pick it up
Cheers for the rec homie
should I get the gold edition or just regular though?
A game that's had a similar impact on me recently was a game called "Unheard" and much for the same reasons you described in the first 5 minutes. Also a puzzle game, with a fun design and intriguing narrative, so I would recommend that to you in return
Also yeah, Truman show is great

This game is beautiful and one of the best examples that videogames are art.
Talos Principle is one of those games that I was so invested in that I finished them on one morning in my pyjamas. I just wanted to do one more level before breakfast, but then I finished ALL of it, that's how much fun it was. Actually, was it really "fun"? I mean, the puzzles definitely were, but the story is just soulcrushing and genuinely made me feel bad at times. It was definitely a game that hooked me from day 1. The beautiful environments, the wonderful music, the atmosphere... it makes me nostalgic for a place I never visited. I'd love to live in that world. It's so gorgeous.
What a fantastic game, absolutely brilliant.
This is my favourite game of all time, a position only shared by one other game that is nowhere near as artistic and just my biggest guilty pleasure.
This game is artful in ways no other game I've ever played has ever been able to accomplish. I love it, and I hope CroTeam can follow it up either spiritually or directly. I love them for allowing me to experience this masterpiece.
I love these videos too, you did it justice.
I'm very happy to hear it is your favorite game too! Even without fully analyzing all of it, the game's atmosphere and music makes you feel stuff.

10:32 "I'm not the only person who was left profoundly moved by it"
I think the loneliness aspect of the game is exactly why it's so beautiful, you mindlessly listen to God while doing your puzzles and getting hints of communication around you (QR codes). You start seeking social interaction because of the scarcity of the interaction. You slowly begin searching for knowledge, meaning, history about all of it and in turn, you start asking questions.
I played it years ago, it made me feel like I was inside the game, living the story. I never thought twice whenever I read hours of writing on a computer terminal, or having conversations with it. Every single interaction was perfect. Nothing felt like a game.
To whomever reads this and hasn't tried it, I know it sounds absurd. But I really can't stop suggesting you try it, it really is something special.
You are 100% spot on on that feeling, when you want your friends to play this beautiful game, but they see it as just a boring puzzle game. And you even cant describe the best parts without spoiling it. One of the best and most atmospheric games i have ever played.
This game is absolutely amazing and I can only agree: the loneliness this game makes you feel is so weird, it is hard to describe.
The music, the sound design, it all makes you feel really really strange in a way I haven't felt before.
The extremely vague descriptions are exactly how I feel about the game, and I really wanted to tell others about it. The Talos Principal has one of those stories that I consider by far one of my favourites, and it looks like you too experienced that. Looking at the comments, I'm also super glad others are buying the game and get to experience it for themselves for the first time. Just stick with it, it pays off at the end.
Oh, do you have a more accurate ETA for the spoiler video? I'd love to see it, but if it goes unlisted (at least without another announcement video or some such), I feel like I'll miss it completely. Want to mark down that video in my calendar, as I'd love to hear what you have to say about it.

I bought talos principle and it’s now one of my favorite games. Thank you for introducing me to this game
The Talos Principle is the kind of masterpiece that you can't stop thinking about when you've just finished it, then you forget about it completely, and then when you're reminded of its existence you suddenly get the incredible urge to boot up again.
I've completed the game and the DLC, I remember being obsessed by them, but now I barely remember any of it. Which is good, because that gives me an excuse to replay it. This is different from Portal 2 and Deus Ex, which although I played them longer ago, I still remember the vague bigger picture of. Because of this, I don't think I would enjoy replaying them as much, even though I played them for days on end, hours at a time.
I love this game so much.
Yay, Talos Principle!
So glad you made a video about this. I've been telling people this is my favorite puzzle game since the portal series. Now I can link to this video when trying to convince my friends!
This sleeper of a game became my favorite of all time as well.
I trust you decoded all the hexadecimal text all over the terminals and game world. That made the story and lore of it just so fucking incredible.
I never thought a game would convey 'transcendence', but here this is. One of the most emotionally unique games for me. Thanks for making this
You absolute monster, I always spoil games for myself by watching the extra-spoilery video. You officially added a level of inconvenience that will make me go play the game instead. I can usually tell when 3kliksphillip is getting ideas, and this feel like one of those times...

It's just something really special that you don't see every day in a game. I totally agree on the terminals by the way, I started out ignoring them, but then noticed they held some very interesting content and started reading all of them. I also suggest you play the DLC 'Road to Gehenna' as it's really, really good (and a lot of content, especially for the price!) I'm so glad that, after Hexcells, you picked up this game as well. I got myself this game for Christmas 2015 and was utterly in love with it, but disheartened by the fact that literally no-one I'd talked to even knew The Talos Principle existed. The review I ended up writing for this game was basically a love letter to Croteam, and I still think the game holds up just the same today. Thank you for covering it! For anyone who's wondering whether they should buy the DLC or not, I wholeheartedly recommend it. The puzzles become more creative and challenging, and the narrative, I think, is even more ingenious than that of the base game.
You posted this just in time for me to not get any sleep this night, but I must say I'm loving it this far!
I started playing this game because of this review and I have to say I'm not disappointed, it's such a good game 👏 Thank you!

The best things in this game are its views on borders of locations with the gorgeous OST. There're no super resolution textures, but yet it brings so cozy feelings. Hey Philip. Bought and played this game 3 years ago.
This game is maybe my favorite puzzle game of all time. It has smart riddles, lots of extra stuff to do (all in the right amount for gameplay) and also exceptional sound and graphics.
But where it really shines is in the philosophical aspect. It really can change one's viewpoint in life and also loved all the Rock music references (only some Pink Floyd comes to mind).
Thanks forthe video!
It’s so nice to know someone else felt the same way about it, because you perfectly described the feeling I had while going through it. Going from puzzles to being about conversing with the terminals, seeking them out, building up theories but being unable to share them with anyone. Really looking forward to that spoilery one! And have a nice Christmas Philip :)
I'm absolutely dumb and yet this is one of my favorite games of all time. Still can't believe this is from the same people who made Serious Sam.
If you realize you have much to learn, and this is your favorite game; then I have a hard time believing you're dumb, friend. Don't be so hard on yourself.
Yeah seriously (pun intended), don't go hard on yourself, dumb people usually pretend as if they are smart lol.
I wasn't very serious (no pun intended) on me being dumb but I still appreciate the positivity.
I never got around to checking, but I'm pretty confident that I solved one of the later puzzles in this game in a way that the developers never intended. I was stuck on the level for hours, and the solution I found seemed like it had to be so precisely set up that it can't have been the way you were supposed to do it. It's one of the best games I've played in the last few years though, certainly. Great to see it get a shout out from Philip and hopefully more people who weren't aware of it get to play!
I got that feeling of "I have no idea if this is the intended solution" a lot during the last third of the game. Which, I actually think is pretty high praise for the design of some of the puzzles.

One of the bonus puzzles, "Nerve Wrecker," is literally just juggling jammers while squeezing past like a dozen moving mines.
I'm really happy that you're going to talk about this gem! This game gave me actual existential crisis. I made me doubt everything. This is why it's my favourite puzzle game. And the most memorable one

Well, then. I will definitely give it another try.
Same here. I just felt too lonely so I took a break from it.
The puzzles are fantastic, but the story told in the terminals, and the voice, the scientist, and the story you tell for yourself is just what makes this game the best I've ever played.
Talos Principle is SO good. It's a very fine line Croteam manages to wander along perfectly without stumbling over - the whole world it's building makes a ton of sense. Thanks for this video, really looking forward to your spoilery conclusion. Merry Christmas!

Thank you so much for recommending this game, Philip! I bought and played it after watching this video and it is, indeed, the best game I've ever seen in terms of plot and storytelling. I found myself spending hours digging through the various levels to discover all secrets, collected all logs I could find, and even translated the hex strings to ascii with the help of an OCR tool. I knew I could probably find all that information somewhere online but I was so engrossed in the game that I didn't want to pull away from it until the very end - managed to log nearly 40 hours in the span of 3 days. I'll leave the more detailed commentary for the follow-up video but I'll say that The Talos Principle, to me, truly reveals what distinguishes video games from other artistic mediums.
Finally! someone reviewing this game again. I dare to say that this is better Puzzle game than both portals!
I agree. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love the Portals, but this game is just that little bit better. The way they encourage to "break the game" to get some of those stars is incredibly crafted and rewarding. Portal is missing this extra thing to satisfy your desire to take the game mechanics to the extreme to exploit the level design as much as possible.
I love The Talos Principle, and while some of the puzzles do rival, if not exceed the quality of the best bits of either Portal, I remember getting a bit cheesed off from time to time with TTP, in a way I never did with Portal. The story of TTP is what makes it arguably better than Portal overall though. I haven't played Portal for so long now, but I seem to remember them being really short. TTP gives you much more content as well I feel.
Better than Detroit.
I started playing Talos principle after this video. One of the best experience I've ever had

I saw this video not long after it came out but didn't watch the whole thing cause you had managed to convince me to buy the game and avoid as much information about it as possible. Now months later after playing it on and off for so long I finally beat it and it was honestly one of the best experiences I've had in a video game. Thank you so much for introducing it to me! Anyways, now I can watch the rest of this video without having to worry about soilers
I watched the start of your video, and while I don't buy games without knowing them I decided to trust you because I really like your content and puzzle games "like Portal".
I played 3 hours and LOVED it. Now I came back and want to watch the rest of the video, thank you so much for the great content!!
Philip, I really recommend you play the DLC as well! It's got a story of it's own and features quite difficult puzzles, harder than most you could find in the original game, but there's not as many.
It's worth every penny, I swear.
I think the fact that the story, or even more so the delivery of that story, is so good that kind of killed the game for me funny enough. It's so good I just wanted to read and interact with the story so much the puzzles became boring(especially since the game isn't *that* short). Might boot it up after the holidays though cause it's atmosphere is really great.
True... although, the same story gives a very real reason to complete those puzzles. Ugh... It's just so good. 😌
That kinda thing turns me off on this game, though the main reason I won't play this game is that first person games usually make me nauseous(adjusting FOV doesn't seem to help).
can always rely on you for strong recommendations, thank you!
I cannot wait for the second video. I'm dying to see how you felt about the game, and if it relates or contrasts how I felt. I was so incredibly moved and emotionally involved in this game.
