Recently, four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler dropped by Bodybuilding.com headquarters. Although he took an immense number of photos with fans and surprised callers in our customer service department, his visit wasn't all fun and games. Jay actually came to teach-not in a training room, but in the gym.
Bodybuilding.com athlete Kizzito Ejam was lucky enough to be Jay's sole student for the day. Cutler took Ejam through the first workout of his mass-building Living Large Trainer, where Kizzito was given a one-on-one lesson about the best techniques for training chest and calves.
We filmed the entire workout so you could benefit from Jay's incredible knowledge.
You don't have to be preparing for a bodybuilding show to incorporate Jay's techniques and workouts into your regimen.
Incline Bench Press
Elbow position is crucial with pressing movements. "You don't want to push with your shoulders and triceps," says Cutler. "You want to push with your chest, so move your elbows a little inward. If your elbows are out, you'll use your shoulders and triceps to move the bar. Your chest should be the highest point on your body. Push the bar upward and feel your pecs contracting."
"I see a lot of people in the gym who are pressing over and over and just doing the work with their triceps," Cutler adds. "That's why you see a lot of underdeveloped chests."
Flat Bench Press
The bench press is the meat and potatoes exercise for the chest. But, you have to do it correctly to get the best results.
"Focus on contraction," Cutler says. "You see a lot of people in the gym doing cheat reps and bouncing the bar off their chests because they're using more weight than they can handle. I'm a bodybuilder. I'm not focused on how much weight I'm using. I want to feel that burn. Keep your chest up and contract your pecs."
Although bodybuilders aren't exclusively focused on hitting a massive one-rep max, Jay has some advice if you're stuck and can't seem to improve: "Train lighter for a couple of weeks and then go back to a max-effort workout. You'll probably be better. If you're constantly training heavy, you're just exhausting yourself."
Dumbbell Fly
"As you probably know, the chest gets engorged with blood from pressing movements," says Cutler. "Now we're going to stretch it out to engage more muscle fibers and get more blood and nutrients into the area."
Jay's advice about selecting weight is consistent throughout his workout. "Everyone's mind is stuck on how much weight he can hit. That's not what is important. It's all about the contraction and how to get blood into the area. If you use too much weight, you can't get the arms out very far to stretch out the chest."
"Don't try to get more reps than you can do by yourself, even if your partner is yelling at you. If you get to the point where your partner is doing all of the work, you're done," Jay says.
Dips
"This movement was a staple for a lot of my Olympia training," Cutler says. "It creates that nice, round look. The key to doing this exercise well is keeping your legs back and leaning your chest forward. You're not trying to lock out the triceps; you're trying to lock out the chest. That's why the lean is really important. If you lean back, it's hard to lock the chest, but if you're forward, the chest will lock before the triceps."
When it comes to weighted dips, Cutler didn't need to add any extra iron. "Because I weighed 300 pounds, I usually only used my body weight," he says. "If you're heavy enough, bodyweight dips are fine." Focus on the contraction in your pecs and getting all 10 reps. Don't worry about strapping on a dip belt or weighted vest.

Jay seems to be a great trainer. very patient and he explains everything well
Yes, I thought so, too!
My old trainer, who was a pro, would just stand there with his arms crossed and wouldn’t say a word. His looming presence, alone, would push us to our limits.
Jay is a great man. Mr Olympia, but before this title he is a down to earth man
Yeah he is
Best training session since Massa Moore and Chicken George
cutler always has this look about him like he's slightly annoyed by everything and just wants to work out
raglanheuser i think that guy just kept talkin and jay wanted him to do his sets
That actually might be the reason
@Emiliano Kamari how about trusting her and not spying on her you spineless twat
@@silviuionescu5270 😂
so f.cking true :) love this comment man well done well seen :)
I like how calm Jay Cutler seems in all his interviews and training videos. He is the type of guy I would enjoy training with. Calm, focused, and patient with his client.
Champion mentality
Are you gay?
+da j lol
You wouldn't want to trian with his starting to ween off his cycle on his cycle or start his cycle when he's off he probably is like this
Ya, would be pretty nice to train with a 4 time Mr Olympia haha who wouldn’t like that?
It’s crazy because the guy he’s training is absolutely jacked, but it seems like he’s learning quite a bit from Jay.
We all have that one shirt that makes us look amazing lol
Eduardo Villamar all shirts wish they could be worn by jay. So when they get the chance they try their best
Hahahahahaah wallah jes

Mine is blue ☺️
@@bobbob6152 I have 5 black shirts. I bought them all when I first started Lifting 😊
Cutler looks like a real good trainer
I know right
yep ass off the bench, suicide grip and all
+KillerKupcake the guy clearly struggling, Jay should tell that little fucker about the form. But I guess he's not really in to it and only there because he has too lol
hennadiy Konoval Yup you got the guy all figured out.
Richard Tartaglia you are joking right?
I always turn to youtube comments for expert advice on lifting.
I envy you bro
First piece of advice, stop using gloves. Gloves promote bitch hands.
AHHAAHAHh lolllllyeah. me too. haha
helioseismology exactly, watching kizmoto do his penitentiary mentality really uninspires us
read this is a bill burr accent for maximum lolz
The guy getting trained is one of those guys that seem to always know what you're going to say, and instead of being polite and letting you say it, they say it for you.
Or it could be affirmation that you understood what he said.
He's nervous for fuck's sake.
I couldn't even watch this because he kept interrupting jay
I think we've all done it. He's starstruck and trying to impress Jay.
@@XxowendanxX never done it
I appreciate Jay Cutler for these:
1) No bald bodybuilder (often rare) 2) Mr Olympia and and down to earth 3) Politeness and accent free English 4) Great patience teaching
Jay, Dorian, Arnold, Zane, Haney. All had hair and have a combined Mr Olympia titles of like 26. But yeah I see what you mean ;)
+Jay Kumar R So you wouldn't appreciate Jay if he had an accent?
***** Jay is not English teacher or lecturing on something, for me to expect him to be so.... . I am not yet fluent in English and I find it difficult to follow when some people from west and middle west speak. But I could follow his and appreciated. Anyway, please don't waste my time any more.
+Jay Kumar R Waste your time? lol you replied to me...i guess using 30 sec of your time answering a simple question is a waste of time.
Another question, why wouldn't you appreciate Jay if he was bald?
Ask your mom. If your father were bald, she would have created you with full haired post man or lawn moving guy. If your mom lies and says otherwise, check why hair growth is billion $ industry.
when their "warm up" is your Max 😖😭😔
Need to eat more lol

Jay Cutler is the real deal in my opinion. I remember several years ago I wrote Jay about supplementation and the guy is so honest, it helped me make a decision in which way I decided to go with my workouts. For a 4 time MR O. Jay I'm sure is still as humble as he is today as he was when he was runner up. I think you're a good role model Jay.
Yeah you keep lifting that butt up mr Bodybuilding.com athlete. Show us all good form...
Yeah whats up with that? Cutler didn't say shit about it.
don't forget the hat tilt is key to.
Chester Copperpot
You're partially correct. They maintain a stance with their torso raised during some lifts. They do NOT however raise their torso with every corresponding rep.
Ken Too much weight for him.
This only shows that mr. Cutler does not practice what he preaches... "Bodybuilding is not about weight, but repetitions"
it was obvious that that weight was way over that guys 10 rep max, any trainer would have drop a bit less weight for him, but it's not only Cutler... Any bodybuilder suffers from this hypocrisy, only when they reach a max pr that defeats at least 90% of all people around them, they allow themselves to say "Well it's all about repetitions", but only because they have the confidence and peace of having been able to lift a lot.
he can't even touch 185 to his chest
Jesus Christ can jay get a full sentence out without being interrupted
@@tylerwickerham7806 Millions Social Media said the same thing lmao
Jay....... I've got a friend paulie he ownes a gym P.I fitness in statenisland. Everything your saying he has said to me. ITS LIKE YOU GUYS ARE READING A SCRIPT . Ive been out due to a heart condition about a yr. Along w several injuries over the past 10yrs . This week i start training again im 64 n ready for the pain . Thank you. for your dedication to the sport take care brother.
Jays giving this guy a good work out. This is not just volume for this guy and he looks great. No he's not super strong at this point but Jay is giving us great information here and haters are just spitting out bullshit.
Then they wonder why they're natural gains are coming along so slow. They over there trying to act like He-man at the gym. Maxing out, doing super terrible fast reps with really poor form. In the mean time the dude doing 5 sets of incline with just 100 pounds is getting a bigger and better looking chest faster than they are.
Haters are often loosers in real life
I think bodybuilding, regardless if doing professionally or not, is always a competition; you always compete against yourself, in ever rep you compete against yourself wanting to give up.
Wise words Frank. Competing against yourself is important.
Frank S. damn dude that's deep
jay chill af.
Why people saying the dude talks too much? He probably excited to be getting trained by Jay Cutler, wouldn't you be?
Knoll I would, but all he has to do is shut up.
I dont like how he keeps trying to finish Jays sentences its extremely irritating
I thinks it's just nervous chatter, too.
He’s also working out I mean I’d be a little light headed after this workout and a bit nervous with 4x Olympian.
@@Lewdacris916 he was just saying it with respect gor goodness sake...🤦
Jay Cutler seems so down to earth and humble. Refreshing
Even the warm up sets on the incline bench looked like it was heavy enough for this guy :)
Bruce Wayne yeah i dont understand. The guy has a decent upper body and cant handle 120 lb :S
Jay for me you are the best. You keep me going to the gym day after day, I follow all your recommendations and believe me I am noting the difference, now I am into training for 22 days your chest routine to see how I do. Thaks, Jay please dont stop posting your videos, for people like me you help us a lot. Thanks.
Jays the man! Seen him today, very humble and polite
Great Video. I actually watched beginning to end! As for the comments stop hating. He asked all the right questions & can’t fault him for being excited
Jay is so great because he is so articulate and explains things so well.
At 9:00 Cutler said "Here you keep doing your set, I'm just gonna pretend your chest is a typewriter for a sec"
He can typewrite on my chest
If this guy that Jay is training. Would stop talking this would be a better video.
+Robert Brennan You can actually see that Jay Cutler is a bit pissed of by the black dude. Keeps talking shit instead of focusing to train.
+Garensterz I think it's between Jay being pissed because jay thinks that when the guy does talk it's interrupting the info jay is trying to give. Jay is the like "shut up. I'm the pro. What you have to say doesn't matter!!"" Lol.
Freaking Amen Bro. Glad someone said it.
+Robert Brennan Can you pm him and tell him to stfu?
+NoParking If jay didn't do it. Who am I to intervene?!? Lol
that was not an incline, did you see how much he lifted his butt ? that was actually an flat bench press on an incline...srs?
thecosmy1 by by g
thecosmy1 so fucking true that was so annoying to watch
Do u not know how incline works 😂 it’s about the way his arms are moving upwards focusing on the top muscles in the chest 😂 nothing to do with his but...
Tom Bree dude just stfu you can clearly see how he arches his back a lot I mean the dude tried to stand up ffs and call it incline lmao
Tom Bree it can injure him
JAY !!! You are one COOL DUDE !!!! I am shocked at your demeanor and approach ... so awesome that you are so grounded !!!
Jay Cutler thanks for taking the time to train us

selvakumaran velupillai "whats wrong with being racist" 😑
Selva VRV racism is disgusting.
4:09 K, so when we're done, this is the last workout for the day, right?
Jay: uhhh...
😂
His grip makes me uncomfortable
yeah im gonna laugh when the bar slips right out of his hands lol ive seen it happen
It’s called a false grip takes all the strain off the wrists
@Chip Fisher it does , try it out , then you'll know
@Chip Fisher it does I used to have problem with my wrist when benching, but since I started using the false grip I don't feel pain anymore
lol the reason to do it is to take your forearms out of it to isolate more. It’s doing the same to your wrist no matter what, reason being they male wrist wraps
Correct me if I am wrong. Balboa didn't turn his hat backwards. Stallone did in the movie "over the top" which the character balboa is NOT in. Not hating. Just testing my memory.
Lincoln Hawk :P
***** And it might be the ONLY, lol.
Wow iv just commented this and I scroll down and see this hahaha. Yeah your 100% on the money
Loved this one. What a personality Cutler is ❤️ and the buddy really listens to him with admiration and respect ❤️❤️
love Jay's answer! the kid asks "How about for people having problems breaking through weight plateaus?" Jay replies "That's kind of an odd question because we're bodybuilders and we're not really focused on how much weight were lifting." I always tell guys at the gym not to worry about how much they're benching just do the work and you will grow.
Plateuing is a guarantee indicator that you're not growing.
Bodybuilders are not powerlifters so weight is not as important as contractions and effort. You don't want to get injured. Jay had the perfect answer!! True OG of bodybuilding!
Good thing Cris Jones Lite was there for the jokes and to teach Jay how to lift and finish a sentence.
yeah i didn't like when he cut him off, but don't hate on c.j
He'll ya this dude disrespecting the champ finishing all his sentences and un accurate to finish what he's talking about at that
That isn't Chris Jones you dumbass
Paul L It was a joke, that went over your head, dumbass
That was a pretty funny comment XD
Jay's calves are sick!!
Great training video, very informative, and motivating. Furthermore, Jay Cutler inspires, and gives very good, practical advice.
What i like about him is he is so patient in listening to the others
jay cutler is the best bodybuilder in the world, learned a lot from this video. thanks bodybuilding.com
Man jay cutler got ripped over the offseason..
Lmao
Do you think that he's the quarter back? Lmao
Nathan. JDM you totally missed the joke
I love it when a 4 time Mr Olympia calls them repetitions
What do you call them?
Jay seems very smart and is a great teacher; very surprised!
85305 yep
Respect gained for Jay Cutler
Jay Cutler, legend, respect 💪💯.
Never finish Jay Cutler's sentences!!!
Listen to Legend speak, take the advice and just keep lifting...
Dudes obviously nervous. He's getting trained by Jay Cutler for Christ's sake. Give the kid a break!
The little dude interrupted jay too much. Thanks for the video.
pretty sure the website told him to say things so it helps people watching learn more.
The kid constantly interrupted Jay. Interrupting someone is very different than active listening.
I have loads of respect for Jay, wins and losses and in general i think he handles him self really
thats pretty much what i have been looking for , bodybuilding that just goes with your day to day life ,,,magic
Trying to tell me 4X Mr Olympia does this work out.. 3 sets of 10 is his secret loool
Josh Bridgman prolly yeah hes on a ton of gear and u dont have to do much to grow..i worked out of like 5 years 6 days a week and got on d-bal and deca and boom..i hardly worked out and gained 25lb and got huge
David anderson where do you get it?
Strictly Business napsgear.org..u csn go there i get my test from there
David anderson thanks for responding so fast. Any problems with product or shipping? I hear some packages don't make it and you can lose money.
Strictly Business nope..takes awhile to get it but they been geat..they will walk u step by step..just mske sure u spell name right when u order u have to use western union or something like thst..i think there are other ways to order too. but i give it a 9 out of 10 only due to the time it takes to get it..it tske about 4 weeks
Love how all the form-nazis have no profile pic.
but your mom has profile pic in fuckbook
+Jiipee Homo Ye proved my point mate. And yer a douche to boot.
So fucking true haha
that's mean bro😔
*does two sets of incline*
"damn i'm gonna have to go bra shopping"
He’s so right about weight, it’s not always about how much u lift but rather the tension on the muscles
I'm glad this dude was able to speak and have a conversation with Jay and wasn't told to keep his mouth shut
why isnt there a similar video with shoulders , back / biceps , legs etc ??
lol I totally thought this was Chris Jones when I saw the thumbnail.
It should have been
"So as you know, the chest get's engorged with muscle on the pressing movements"-jay cutler🤔
Everyone I know that goes to the Gym tells me to life HEAVY!! Jay Cutler states just life on your optimum level. Love Jay Cutler
best MR.olympia in the world good job jay
He's there to learn yet constantly interrupts jay lol
"btw is this the last exercise of the day ?" jay. urrrrrrr
Jay Cutler : is the GAME
Jay's a top trainer, he dosn't beat around the bush. Just helps ya get the job done 👍
Summary of the workout: 3x10 at all times, no matter what.
These guys warm up sets are brutal
I didnt change my elbow position until this year. Its made a world of difference.
let the boss speak man
says to eliminate the triceps for incline*
suggests your elbows inward*
wat mane,
try it, better chest contraction and he is right.
Derick Young the closer your triceps are the less chest contractions
WARF3RE true man.
WARF3RE The more flared out your arms out the more shoulders you involve. Keep em close.
45 ° is optimal for a balanced press
i came here after watching arnold videos and this physiques of old olympia and current olympia are not even remotely comparable. Insane aesthetics versus size, mass, and no proportions
Jay Cutler is quite humble for a star. Good laid back style.
omg that false grip
To me this just shows how much diet is key. Every exercise I’m matching or exceeding BBs athlete with a similar rep range. But our bodies are so different. He’s way more defined and ripped
Jay Cutler like Arnold is the most personable out of all the bodybuilders.
suicide grip and fucked up wrist while benching, one way ticket to snap city
What is the introsong to this clip called?
That's how I do standing calf raise, I'll use a stair stepper platform if its available. Sometimes I'll do one leg at a time, holding a dumbbell in one hand and the side of a machine in the other for balance.
Bro imagine having Jay Cutler spot you. EPICNESS
3:06
This is why Jay looks the way he does and Ronnie looks the way he does now.
Jay is a great trainer.....
Always love Jay. This kid is super annoying though
jay Cutler: I like to wear tights to see my legs better
also jay Cutler in the mr Olympia leg workout video: i cover my legs, i feel like i can hit them better that way
please make a decision
jay sounds like peter griffin here lol
Wilson Ling lmaaaaaoooooo
Cutler is a very great trainer.
Regarding dumbells vs barbell, people hardly ever mention the spotter. Surely if you don't have a spotter it's better to go with the former option, if you're going heavy.
Damn playa, stop finishing his sentences
His arms are too much inward on flat bench in my opinion
BB guy is proof that just because you look like you can lift doesn’t mean you can lift. Thanks for making me feel good about the weight I lift bro
On the chest fly's, another thing I can add is, you'll always be able to do more on your negatives than your positives. Most people will come to failure on their positives first (pushing movement) but will still be able to do negatives (going down movement) so Jay is helping him on his fly's to destroy those muscle fibers on his negative movement. It's usually a secret pro class move that most b.b don't talk about lol and most of you wouldn't understand as the way Jay explained it because he didn't really "actually" tell you why he was doing it and how great it actually is in building muscles but it's making it so your negative fly is working just as well as your positive fly, which will tear the whole chest up and not leave a muscle fiber untouched. It's a body building secret in a sense. Most body builders won't talk about it when they're telling you how to bench. Negatives are almost more important then positives because it's tearing muscle fiber that usually wouldn't be touched, which is also why a lot of body builders tell you to get them last two or three reps with help in because you're mostly working those negatives but I better shut up before I get killed for spilling the secrets. Lmao
You start to wonder, has Cutler been sleep walking his whole career. 🤔
calves, what are those!?
I think there baby cows that be in the fields 🤔
+Henri Lehti nope lebron plays with that basketball team
Jay should really consider making this fitness thing a career. He has a real knack for it.
The hidden thing is to wrap the metal until you get tired tired. Instead of murmuring and frustration to increase serious scales, you can find something that is clear but you have to keep it at any time that it can not lift up again. We are convinced that the size of the muscles means to stimulate the ability to develop new proteins, the body program increases in many bundles in time.
Annoying trainee, keeps interrupting jay.
Wow! Jay’s mind muscle connection is so good, did you see his chest when stimulant doing the dip?
jay is so nice and polite
Kinda looks like franklin from gta
Work those toothpicks ha!
Is this Jay teaching someone a workout video or is this a interview of jay? Dang the trainee talks to much lol.
This guy Cutler seems like a really cool, laidback guy.
