Extremely underrated film! Great character development, music, dialogue... "that's why you have dogs." Etc. Brilliant. I've seen this like 80 times. Worth watching every single time.
Watched this movie tonight for the millionth time, I love it so! It's still the only movie I've seen that's actually better than the book it's based off of. I read the book about 7 or 8 years ago and I remember being so disappointed in it. What a relief to watch the film and discover how wonderful it was compared to its source material. I adore this film!
"He looks at me like he's the spoon and I'm the dish of ice cream" Woah great line, Prudie!!!! and great movie too ;) I just got my hands on "Emma", thanks for this movie!
I loved it, the story was quite slow at the beginning but the ending is just amazing The movie helped me also to appreciate Marianne and Colonel Brandon's love story
If you read the Jane Austen books....you will love this movie even more because you will catch the parallels...I was like.....that was exactly what happened in Pride and Prejudice.....I would be like she is Fanny, ohhh great movie.
She's cute. I like how she really doesn't have to work for her romance like the other heroines, she just captivates her love interest. (I loved the 2007 movie with Felicity Jones)
This movie lit a fire in me to read Jane Austen, and that’s definitely one of the best book choices I’ve made. Austen and this movie encourage you to question who you are. For my degree, I’ll start studying Gothic Womens Writers of the 19th century in two months. I will definitely be kicking it off with The Jane Austen Book Club. The book is great too. It provides more back story on Jocelyn.
it's about a group of people doing a book club about jane austen's books and finding things that in her books that they can relate to with each one's life and current situations. they are not necessarily symbolizing one character in each of her novels. it's a really good movie. i think it's well plotted and pretty clever. it has a good, solid cast too. you should watch it.
I don't know if I want to see this. The trailer doesn't look very convincing, but maybe the movie is really good, I know I love Emily Blunt anyway. Does anyone have a short opinion about it?
I assume Grigg is played by Hugh Dancy. I thought he looked like Colin Firth at first. I guess the main point is that the lives of the book club members parallel the works of Jane Austen which they read at the rate of one per month. The film is likeable and chatty, which I enjoyed. You do glean facts about Austen's novels (I have only read Pride and Prejudice myself, none of the others). I wanted the schoolteacher to get it on with 'Trey', but she's very prim and Austen-like in her demeanour. Film is peppered with vignettes, facts about Austen, debate about Austen's character as a writer and woman. It just proves the timelessness of Jane Austen and her applicability and capacity to transcend place: a group of contemporary American middle-class women find her works apt and relevant, as ever. Of course, Austen's novels are among the most perfect in English literature- especially Pride and Prejudice.
is it just me, or did that part where sylvias husband (i think daniel) sees her and grigg out to lunch.. that part wasnt in the movie was it? i saw it on tv so maybe they just cut it out..?
It's weird and funny to know Marc Blucas played in Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Riley Finn and, the book mentions Buffy, and Marc is cast as a character in the movie. I wonder if it was on purpose or accident and worked out as a coincidence.
I didn't get that feeling. Allegra is flighty and tempestuous not because she's a lesbian, she is just a flighty and tempestuous woman who happens to be a lesbian. It's kind of a stretch to say the film was unfair to her because of that. All people have different personalities, that was just hers.
The movie is rushed at the end. Everything is slowly developed then rushed at the end to fit it all into the run time. Needed to be an hour longer so the story wouldn't have to be rushed and crammed in at the end.
Also, the only sex scenes on the movie came from the lesbian couple. So, once again, the lesbian relationship was portrayed as only sex-filled and frivolous. I was so angry after I saw this movie that I forgot about its good qualities. I also thought the way Blunt's/Prudie's husband ALL OF A SUDDEN became interested in listening, reading, and whole-heartedly participating in the whole Jane Austin wagon was way too contrived.
It’s a great film, one of my faves to watch a few times a year. However, this trailer really isn’t too great, doesn’t seem to capture the flow of the film at all. See the movie!
I understand your point of view; however, since gay and lesbian stereotypes include being flighty and tempestuous, I think it would have been nice to show a different perspective.

I totally agree!
Emily Blunt's acting is wildly underrated in this film
Queen of Andriaglatus Her acting was literally insane here.
She was perfect for Prudie
I saw this movie again and again.
I like it very much.
Jocelyn and Prudie are my favorite character.
they are my favorite too!
Prudie bothers me

"I think he's in love."
"Well, I'm rooting for the brain tumor!"
Very funny.
"He looks at me like he's the spoon and I'm the dish of ice cream" Woah great line, Prudie!!!!
and great movie too ;) I just got my hands on "Emma", thanks for this movie!
I loved it, the story was quite slow at the beginning but the ending is just amazing

I love love love the way it turns out!!!! Completely threw me for a loop!
Here for Hugh Dancy
There are people like me in this world....Austen is my priority.
If you read the Jane Austen books....you will love this movie even more because you will catch the parallels...I was like.....that was exactly what happened in Pride and Prejudice.....I would be like she is Fanny, ohhh great movie.
One of my favourite movies!!! Love it and rewatched it when I need some inspiration!
She's cute. I like how she really doesn't have to work for her romance like the other heroines, she just captivates her love interest. (I loved the 2007 movie with Felicity Jones)
THIS WAS A PERFECT MOVIE! I love everything about iti, it was`ny so predictable or anything.
great romance and drama!

Kevin Zegers is a mixture of Ian Somerhalder and Zac Efron!!
As Trey, he's very handsome.

What an insult to both of those actors especially Ian lol
I loved Hugh Dancy after this film.

Catherine from Northanger Abbey- she's so innocent, naive but adventurous!

That's alittle strong XD
I can't wait to watch this movie! Good thing I've watched the movies and series based on Jane Austen's novels. :)

Haven't read the book (yet), but I did enjoy the movie. I recommend it and certainly I'll watch it again,... when I feel uninspired.

I don't know if I want to see this. The trailer doesn't look very convincing, but maybe the movie is really good, I know I love Emily Blunt anyway.
Does anyone have a short opinion about it?

What was the quote on the start of the movie
Who's your favorite Jane Austen Hero and why?
Mr Bennett from Pride and Prejudice b/c he's long-suffering. Also, Mr Darcy, of course!
what was the name of the song at the end?
Here for daddy Kevin Zegers❤
I love Emily Blunt's character.
I was thinking the same thing, I wouldn't be able to choose between them. :)
what's the song? "hey I'll get some new shoes on and everythin'll be alright" I must know! I want to see this movie so bad!
is it just me, or did that part where sylvias husband (i think daniel) sees her and grigg out to lunch.. that part wasnt in the movie was it? i saw it on tv so maybe they just cut it out..?
It's in the movie
me too !

Warm, Witty, and Wise!
The movie was okay but in my opinion it was cut badly.
I wish to read the novel some time soon...
This movie is so underrated 🙄
@r5q5is10 technically, it's Zac Efron who looks like Kevin Zegers...
Woah, I haven't seen that blonde woman since Fluke. :D
one of the niciest movies i have ever seen!!!
The book KILLED our book club, ironically...but I loved the film. Go figure
Check out this new book by Megan Webster. Its called Mightier than the Sword. Its really amazing book on Amazon.

is it just me or seem the characters' characters very different from the book?
It’s a great film, one of my faves to watch a few times a year. However, this trailer really isn’t too great, doesn’t seem to capture the flow of the film at all. See the movie!
I think this is based off of the book mr.darcy and me
no, it isn't
...trust me
It's an underrated movie which is not focused on gay characters so it's probably the reason liberals dislike it
I understand your point of view; however, since gay and lesbian stereotypes include being flighty and tempestuous, I think it would have been nice to show a different perspective.
@r5q5is10 yeah but who cares about either when there is Hugh Dancy to look at?
Paolo Nutini - New Shoes ;-)
Maria Bello, ROWR.
@r5q5is10 No Zac Efron looks like Kevin Zegers
