Sandy Welch’s version is my favorite!! Everyone should sleep it! Casting, the entire production is magical! Pride and Prejudice with Mathew and is obviously the greatest version- the music - the geese- the casting! It won no awards! Crazy!
I agree. I think the 1995 version closest followed the original novel, and all the actresses are good looking. The 2005 version is a huge shame. I even prefer the 1940 version over it.
Thompson's reworking of the book into a really definitive screenplay - imo the best adaptation of book to screen - remains the ultimate. Rickman was a perfect Col. Brandon. Thompson married Greg Wise ( Mr Willoughby) later. "Sense and Sensibility" one of my two favourite Austen novels.
@@vanhunks Oh. I didn't realize she married Greg Wise later. She's been married to a few different people by now. I did not know he was one of them. Thank you for that information.
Jennifer Ehle and Collin Firth were by far the best in Pride and prejudice. The casting in that adaptation was exquisite and nothing else has come close. And Emma Thompson’s Sense and Sensibility is legendary.
@@jjettswriting1900 90s had the best adaptations for Jane Austen!! They were done just right!! They cannot make them better today. They would update them today to a nightmare.
The 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice was my entry into the world of Jane Austen on screen, and it remains my absolute favorite. I probably re-watch it at least once a year.
I agree that the 1995 Pride and Prejudice is the best adaptation. Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle are perfect in the lead roles. Interestingly, in the film The King's Speech there was a short scene with both of them, Colin Firth playing King George VI and Jennifer Ehle as the wife of the speech therapist, Lionel Logue.
1995 Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece. The casting is so impeccable that it’s impossible to imagine a different Mr. Collins, Mr and Mrs Bennet, Lady Catherine, Caroline Bingley, Lizzie or Mr. Darcy. The dialog, music, costumes and settings simply make Austin’s beloved novel spring to life. Well-deserved number one.
Agree. It's like classic literature. With all that this term implies. First time I've seen 2005 version I was so disappointed. However, after several revisits, it somehow grew on me to the point that I've learned to appreciate it's more organic visuals and less academic, formal approach to story and characters. Although it was repulsive to me at the beginning, I've realized that aesthetic of 2005 version is most probably more accurate to what grooming, hair, clothes and homes looked like at that period. 1995 version offers costume like perfection that is way more appealing, but hardly realistic. The same goes for decorum in private circumstances, for example. They are very different, to be sure, but each version has it's charms. I often go back to both of them.
2005 Pride & Prejudice is an utter cinematic perfection to me. The entire film feels like being immersed into scenes drawn directly from 19 century English countryside painting. Pure art!!!
@@vanyadolly I wouldn't say they're terrible, just not as good as some. They're a far cry better than the southern Belle hoop skirts straight out of give with the wind for example.
I'm just gonna put it right here for my own bookmark 15. Persuasion (2022) 0:47 14. Mansfield Park (2007) 1:55 13. Persuasion (2007) 3:04 12. Sandition (2019-) 4:17 11. Emma (2020) 5:25 10. Again nobody cares about Pride & Prejudice 1980. Or Mansfield Park 1983 aka the only straightforward adaptation of that particular book. Or any of the other pre-90s productions, of which there are various and several quite good.
I am SO happy (and very surprised) that they picked the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice as number 1. And it truly deserves to be there because it basically comes straight from the book. It's just like reading the book only on screen. It is the best version of Pride and Prejudice.
Not sure how many people know this, but back in 2020 -21, when we were all depressed through Covid, Jennifer Ehle read the entire pride and prejudice novel in a series of RUclips videos while in her car. It is an absolute must listen and it is free
Oh yeah! 1995 "Pride and Prejudice" - I can rewatch it countless times. I knew the top 2 would be "Sense and Sensibility" and "Pride and Prejudice", because the script, the acting, the costumes, the music - everything is there. Plus, Alan Rickman and Colin Firth make everything better(but not even they could save the "Persuasion" adaptation). You can also see the kind of struggle all women face back then and all the social norms very clearly, which is actually why I love Jennifer Ehle's Lizzie so much. She wasn't exactly a girlboss, she wasn't a rude "notlikeothergirls" person; she still had no trouble with speaking her mind where she wanted to(even in front of lady Catherine), but she never insulted anybody - she still spoke in an appropriate for that time and society manner.
The second best Elizabeth Bennet (after Jennifer Ehle) imo, is Greer Garson in the 1940 MGM film version. Laurence Olivier as Mr Darcy is a bit wooden though.
"The kind of struggle all women faced back then" With respect, Jane Austen only ever wrote about a tiny minority at the top of society. Not a criticism, but still a fact. Most women led lives nothing like this.
The 2020 Emma adaptation is one of my most favourite films of all time. I thought he slightly surreal and overly stylised art direction as well as the inclusion of some comedic, jaunty moments was a genius way of depicting the absurdity and silliness of the whole situation which is what I think Austen wanted to capture in the original novel, never mind the stunning casting, costume design, soundtrack and photography direction. This is a brilliant film made with consideration of the original novel, instead of previous depictions and adaptations that is often seen in other films and tv shows.
Yes I'm shocked it wasn't in the top 5... Anya Taylor-Joy perfectly captures Emma. The whole cast was wonderful. The movie was also visually stunning and female directed -- love that for a Jane Austen adaptation.
Yes thank you!! I just watched it after reading the book and it’s amazingly accurate, conversations are lifted directly from the book. I also agree with it capturing what Jane Austen wanted to depict in the book. I just love it and I think it does a really good job staying true to the book
Love the humour and the music to accompany the scenes really made them better. My other favourite is the reactions from the servants when their watching all the action unfold. It's hilarious 😂
I think it’s just that in mainstream media people think only of romance when they think of Austins work. If they had read the books they would understand that it’s actually more about the moral development the characters go through. Also, it’s a loooot more humerous and ironic. The novels don’t take themselves as serious as it’s portrayed in movies
I absolutely adore Sense and sensibility with Emma Thompson. The miniseries was alright but the movie captures everything that needed to be there from the book. Pride and prejudice (2005) is also a huge favourite of mine.
Perhaps it is because I watched the miniseries after the 2005 movie but to me the movie, as you well said, captured the best of the book and its essence. Having the Bennets depicted on the very verge of gentility vs what the miniseries did was a good adaptation, same to have Elizabeth being a bit tomboyish, and then... oh God, the music!
Especially as they claim to rank EVERY adaptation, sans the modern twists like Clueless. At least it features actors who are not almost two decades older than their characters.
@@Lilli_Jay This isn't even close to being every adaptation. I'm only now starting to realize that I didn't ever know how many adaptations there had been. Mind-boggling. @___@
The version is crap. Romola Garai's behaves like 😅a high school popular girl. The whole bunch speaks in that stupid teenage manner; it's painful to watch. I am glad you all enjoyed it, it's auful imho
I agree about Romola Garai, but I think Mr. Knightly was an unpleasant choice for Knightly. Perfect Mr. Elton though. Almost gorgeous enough to justify his vanity.
Persuasion 1995 with Amanda Root and Ciaran HInds is by far the best version. Subtle and understated it really lets the acting stand out. When she grips the chair you can feel all of her inner turmoil, so good!
It was so goddamn romantic. I've never seen anything like it since. So few words spoken between the romantic leads, and yet so much love and passion was conveyed. Love it.
I watched this with my 14 year old daughter a couple days ago!!! The build-up, the tension. The electricity … my teenage daughter was SQUEALING with joy by the final scene. Absolutely glorious in its delicate & patient storytelling that leaves you gasping for more. 💕 Amanda Root and Cirian Hinds are incomparable in their chemistry. My kid was … drooling with anticipation.
Ditto. I found this to be very faithful to the book in it's narrative and in Amanda Root's subtle, understated portrayal of Ann's dignity and despair. Her patience and kindness shone through, making the reunion with Wentworth inevitable. So romantic and so satisfying.
1995 Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austin perfection. Colin Firth IS Mr. Darcy. 1995 Persuasion is a very close second. Cirian Hines and Amanda Root are just wonderful.
@@EmmelineSama You are spot on. My entire problem with the Knightley / Matthew Macfadyen one is that there is ZERO chemistry. They seem like a brother and sister for most of the movie, not the hot-tempered (and hot) lovers in the Firth/Ehle version.
I expected the 2020 Emma to be bad (and maybe the nosebleed was over the top) but I really ended up enjoying it a lot. And unattached collar aside the costumes were quite amazing. If you notice, you see the decoration gets slightly more subtle by the time she realizes whom she loves. Just like Amanda Root becoming less pale and more beautiful as Persuasion went on.
I noticed the same with Jennifer Ehle in Pride and Prejudice 1995 version. Lizzy gets more beautiful as the series continues. I actually did like the 2020 Emma best, though the 1996 with Beckinsale is a close second for me. I liked the quirky different style to the idea as Emma seems to be the most common book made film. I love the Sense and Sensibility with Thompson best. Just an amazing cast!
@@Noorisgoodit was a real nosebleed. It fits with this version since I can believe Emma to be a nervous wreck for the first time ever, and yet the dialogue stays to the book. I remember thinking that when I first saw it that it was real and how to craft it in the scene.
1995 pride and prejudice was and is my absolute favorite. I love how close to the book it was. My grandmother saw the 2005 version because it was translated in Spanish and thought I was fine but wanted to watch the 1995 version and after a long while I found it dubbed in Spanish. It's her favorite version too.
My fave is Persuasion with Ciaran/Amanda. Not just because of their subtle, masterful acting but more the mood of the movie was most true to the times. You can almost feel the chill, the bleakness, the harshness of the weather, the sea and the oppressive lack of light in the evening soiree - just candles smoldering, flickering light on faces. The ambience of the movie makes it my favorite Austen version. Something powerful about its understated approach.
I put on top Sense and sensibility, Emma Thompson's fantastic. But I'm in love with 2005 Pride and Prejudice adaptation. Not only Elizabeth's mother is ridiculously fun and matches perfectly with her silly younger daughter. What I miss, in your analysis, is a comment about soundtracks. No way a good movie can have a bad soundtrack. On this issue, in my opinion Dario Marianelli's music on 2005 version of P&P is absolutely the best!
I agree the soundtrack was fantastic, but the way the Bennet's come off as poor disappointed me. The acting was good, but I think the 1995 adaption far and away better in all other (besides music). To be fair, #1 should have been Sense and Sensibility 1995. Very little compares in any other way to it especially considering it wasn't made for TV. They had to fit a lot into it and did a remarkable job on all sides.
Sorry no mrs bennet is just made to look lazy rather than the actual anxious character she is Alison steadman is much better Kiera knightley turns Lizzy into a boy mad overly perky nitwit which she isn’t she’s independent strong and not afraid to speak her mind we don’t see any of that in her performance and there’s tons of the story glossed over or missing as well as characters completely missing that are essential Louisa and mr hurst make the Jane bingley storyline makes sense to omit them takes this so far away from the actual story that it just isn’t Austen anymore it’s just a period drama and it’s just not good
2005 Pride & Prejudice completely bewitched me. Keira Knightley & Matthew McFadden were so perfectly cast. Their chemistry, the cuteness, the beauty, the intensity, and of course, the final proposal... I swoon every time. ❤
It seems to me that 1995 was a banner year for the stellar productions of "Pride And Prejudice", "Sense and Sensibility" and "Persuasion". I just don't seem to tire watching them - to the point I can "do" portions of the dialog - and how I miss Alan Rickman.
Totally agree ,it was the year of Austen and the best versions . Alan Rickman is sadly missed and not only for his acting prowess ,such a lovely man. 🥰
I generally agree with your list, though I would put Emma (2020) higher. Anya Taylor-Joy really portrays Emma as I see her, spoiled and rich, but also very relatable.
Really? Her Emma was extremely disagreable, weird and sometimes creepy! Emma in the book is spoiled and rich but she also has a heart of gold and she's very loving, even with Miss Bates
Yes for sure! It definitely belongs in the top 10 Austen adaptations. The chemistry between Emma & Mr. Knightley was so so swoon worthy in the 2020 one
I’m just happy to see Northanger Abby included, I don’t see it mentioned often, which is a real shame. JJ Fields sky rocketed Mr Tilley to the top of my Jane Austen love interest favorites. He’s kind, handsome, charming, and so witty. Plus a man that can recognize when he’s wrong, and apologize on the spot??? He’s perfect.
Lol no ;))) 1995's Darcy shows literally no sign of affection for Elizabeth. That is not a good Darcy for me, thank you. Their whole chemestry is missing. Elizabeth looks way too old. Nope, never. Colin Firth is not a true Mr. Darcy. He won't ever be. ;)))
Such an unpopular opinion haha. Both versions are good but in 1995 P&P the actors have more chemistry and are at their very best. They are a bit old but it doesn't really matter as they convey the emotions so well. Keira Knightly was good but she is even better in the Dutchess, a role that suits her better. And Andrew Mcfayden had gotten so good over the years he might play him better now than he did then. I liked him but he was almost too kind.
Dearest fellow Austenites: I highly recommend Elizabeth Gaskell for both your reading and viewing pleasure. Her novel, 'North and South,' not to be confused with the Patrick Swaze movie, is similar to P&P but gritty. It's all building up to the most perfect kiss at the end. Watch and then come back here to tell me how you were on the edge of your seat for the end of that mini series. I know I was.🥰
@@verenakey8389 I agree! So many women today want a tall, tall man. I say give me a man with a deep voice that yearns for me to look back at him. Such a story...sigh
@@Victoriacariad I enjoyed that one as well. I often have what I call, a Jane night. This is a date with myself and either a good book or movie adaptation of a period drama. The entire family knows that I want to be left alone. Jane nights are more than just Austen. They could be Shakespeare, Trollope, Gaskell, Dickens, Bronte, on and on. But sometimes I’ll just pull out a classic Nora Roberts as well. Just enjoy time alone with a good story. 😁
Honestly, between Pride and Prejudice (2005) and Sense and Sensibility (1995), I can't even choose a favourite. I re-watch both every year, they're both wonderful in their own ways.
While I admit the 1995 version may have been the superior production of pride and prejudice... the 2005 keira knightly version is my most watched movie ever.. there is something so beautifully enjoyable and entertaining about it.. I utterly love it despite its imperfections.. it transports me to another time.. it transfixes from the opening scene until the very end.. the cinematography is heaven..
It seems like a low cost version because of some outdoor scenes turned into indoor scenes and Mr. Bingly has turned into a joker with no good look. But still the chemistry between Darcy and Elizebeth is outstanding!
P&P 1995 had the advantage of being a mini-series, more time for completely developing the story and bringing a book to life. Costumes and set-design were spot on. Emma Thompson created a masterpiece with her adaptation of S&S, developing dialog out of a more narrative novel. Great cast.
And the cast was so much more natural and believable. The 2005 P&P cast was not believable to me. So much affectation. Not a fan of Keira Knightley And Mr. Darcy, blaaah! :)
I first watched the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice when I was in secondary school and it's something that's stayed with me ever since. It's now one of my comfort watches.
Thank you for rightfully putting Pride and Prejudice 1995 at the top of the list, as many don't. Not only the best Austen adaptation but one of the best mini series I've ever seen. The Keira Knightley version is pretty good but it leaves a lot out and there's quite a few inaccuracies.
I actually enjoyed the Knightly P&P. They made some rather interesting costume choices as well as set the Bennett family about one social class lower. An interesting twist. However I do prefer the Firth/Ehle version.
I think that Keira Knightley is an infinitely better Elizabeth and the girl who played her in the TV series. I just wish that the Keira Knightley version was a TV show and had the time to do the story justice.
How could you do that with the 2007 persuasion? 😭 It's one of the best films! the kiss scene is perfect, it shows her relief, happiness and even disbelief that they can finally be together. I always get emotional! The film brings her regret and sadness very well! This film is Art!
The 2009 Emma is my favourite adaptation of that book but all the different Pride and Prejudice adaptations have given me a true appreciation for the story and Austen in general. I even have a soft spot for the zombie version!
I even have a soft spot for Bridget Jones' Diary. Although it is no Pride and Prejudice in most ways, it is actually loosely based. There was also a weird modern adaptation where the girls weren't sisters, just friends, and the girl known as Kitty wore a cat T-shirt. 🐈 Probably one of the dumbest adaptations ever done of that particular book, but it still had its good points here and there anyway.
Absolutely the best adaptation of Emma in my opinion. Far better than the Gwyneth Paltrow one. Usually the first adaptation we see is the one we prefer. While I enjoyed Paltrow's Emma quite a bit, the 2009 Emma blew it out of the water.
@@KittyStarlight the Lizzie Bennett Diaries! Where she records vlogs and tells the story that way! I liked that one 😊 it wasn't trying to be a true adaptation, and so I found out very enjoyable
The Persuasion with Ciarin Hines was the best. The electricity between the two was so strong you could feel it. The clasped hand towards the end touched my heart. Loved it.
Oh thank goodness. I saw all the comments praising Kiera Knightlys pride and prejudice and I was going to be so upset if the miniseries wasn’t #1. It’s just so good.
Yeah when I saw the title card and it had the 2005 P&P under "best" I was WTF, what about the 1995 P&P which is far superior. 2005 is pretty, cinematography is excellent but 1995 is a better adaption, the costuming is better and the story is better.
For me the 2005 version was excellent, the actors had that unique chemistry and with the music,I haven't gotten tired of watching it,it has bewitched me body and soul, what a marvelous line.
Amanda Root in 1995's Persuasion was amazing. So much was conveyed just through her facial expressions alone. I was very happy to see it recognized and ranked decently.
Thank You! The 1995 version of P&P is by far the most superior adaptation. Colin and Jennifer had absolutely the best chemistry, and it is the closest to the book I have seen.
Persuasion 1995 is the most realistic and best acted. Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds are wonderful. She is also age appropriate and the screenplay was true to novel
@@cherier9875 I believe Root was 28 when she played the role. The character starts out as timid and sort of beat down by life. As she gains confidence, she becomes a lot less tightly wound in appearance (IMO).
@@cherier9875 Amanda Root was born in 1963. So in this version she was 32, not 40, when she (so masterfully) played the part of Anne. She is supposed to look a little older than 27 because her remorse for not marrying Wentworth when he first proposed to her has prematurely aged her.
@@jamespleger752 I agree the actress is not technically too old for the part, but she LOOKS way too old for the part. It’s still a great movie, though.
Pride and Prejudice will always hold a special place in my heart. The 1995 is the OG and masterpiece for me, but the 2005 is quite aesthetically pleasing even if it doesn't quite compare in other aspects.
It's a bit perhaps strange but I watched the Pride and Prejudice (2005) with Keira Knightley long before reading the novel and so these were my definite character versions. Even if I know that the 1995 adaption is closer to the book, my Mr. Darcy was already casted ....
Not strange, I read the book, but 2005 pride n prejudice just brought it alive, that version mr darcy is top notch. His contempt look, his prideful look, his desperation look and gentler look..
@@syafkhai9218 I loved the acting, but I couldn't get past the awful mess they made of Lizzy's hair and costumes. NOTHING was right unless it was the pretty white outfit with pearls in her hair. Otherwise she looked like a factory waif with her straggly hair, ugly dresses, and no bonnet!
I will forever love that Persuasion (1995) is directed to have them walking off together in silence after they confirm their continued feelings for one another. I think it fits perfectly in a film/book that is on built on subtle communication. It doesn't shout it. They are in love, and happy, and that's just the state of things 💛
2005 P&P is just so aesthetic and beautiful to watch - I love watching it when I'm feeling something that I can't quite place. I'm also super fond of S&S for Alan Rickman's ability to make me swoon over older men haha
@@reikun86 I see what you mean, and no doubt they would have had a very pleasant marriage, bild on mutural respect and admiration. But his heart was hopelessly lost to the lively, passionate sister, with her innocence and high ideals about life. From the moment he first saw her, he loved her deeply, there could never be anyone else.
Without a shadow of a doubt, my favorite adaptations are Pride and Prejudice 2005 and Emma 2009. I have recently reread Emma and rewatched the BBC miniseries. Jonny Lee Miller is superb as Mr. Knightley, who, by the way, is my favorite male character of all time.
I agree with the number one ranking...The 1995 Pride and Prejudice version is great. I watched it several times a year in its entirety with my mom for years. My second ranking would have to be the 2007 Persuasion version, starring Sally Hawkins. That was a fantastic show and I must admit the kiss scene near the end that seemed to take forever was just the best kiss ever!... I am a bit biased though as I love Sally Hawkins in everything she acts in!
Love the 1995 P&P mini series, it’s very accurate to the novel, but I gotta say that my favorite is the 2005 movie! The music, lighting, cinematographic shots, everything they did was truly beautiful and it made me feel immersed in the movie, as if I was right there with them! ❤️
My absolute favorite Jane Austen adaptation is 2005's Pride & Prejudice starring Keira Knightley. I honestly couldn't get enough of Elizabeth Bennet & Mr. Darcy's sizzling chemistry 🔥🔥🔥 and every single actor/actress portrayed their characters perfectly!! 10/10
This movie is simply amazing. Starring big stars like Donald Sutherland and the young guns like Keira, Tallulah (it was het first movie I think), Jenna, Carrie, etc. Rosamunde Pike and Matthew were amazing as well. And for Joe it was his first shot as a movie director. As Donald said, they just became a family, and we can feel it. Amazing job by everyone.
@@tamerama8289 For me it was the very worst. A travesty in fact. Full of anachronisms - due perhaps to ignorance, but more likely be a reflection of the director’s careless vanity. Why would Lady Catherine pay a formal call on the Bennetts at night when all the family were in bed ! Just so that the director could have lot of fun with a candle-lit scene and everyone rushing about in nightwear - many shots of night-caps and shuffling bare feet. Sutherland was the biggest mistake - or a kind of prank. He was a bad fit for the original character - a deeply formal, anxious man, very conscious of class. . Bennett would never have received a gentleman, at any time, unkempt and unbuttoned. Or in a madly cluttered room that was covered with dust. And what of those squealing piglets running around the house! Never could have happened. Even in ‘real life”. Here was comedy created for the vast target audience in the US, who, in the director’s opinion , could only identify with the Bennetts as farmers struggling to better themselves. But not as members of the very up-tight gentry -a distinct and separate caste who lived a mile away from livestock. So calculated, just like the financially astute miscasting of Sutherland, the ever-grinning ironist.
@@belindamay8063 I was horrified by the film. They made the Bennets look worse than tennant farmers, with ducks and pigs roaming in the house; Mrs Bennet, who in the book is offended that anyone would think that her daughters help in the kitchen, in this film is depicted doing laundry or caring for the animals!; the assembly rooms of Meryton looked like stables; Bingley looked like the village idiot; Darcy was painfully shy and not at all arrogant; Miss Darcy, who in the book is tall well formed (a way to say she was a bit chubby) and so shy she could just reply by monosyllables is transformed in a tiny skinny pixie who jumps and skips and is very talkative; Lady Catherine rides in the night (they forgot that there were not lights in the roads at that time and no woman would ever dream to ride by night); Mary and Kitty who were supposed to be the least pretty Bennet girls were actually the prettiests; and Keira Knightley was as always bad (she's sooo overrated). The only think worse than P&P 2005 was that awful thing they called Persuasion in 2022.
2005 Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley is my all time favorite Jane Austen movie. I loved all the characters and the actors who played them. I've probably watched this version about 50 times. I just love it. Mr. Darcy took my breath away. So handsome. And how he talks to Elizabeth Bennett in the raining scene and at the end when he's walking towards her at sunrise, I knew he loved her so much. (No man nowadays would do such a thing.) Ohhhh to find a man like him. But truth be told I haven't seen many of the other versions. Or many of the other Jane Austen movies. I better try and watch them to compare.
I like the 2005 P&P version best. I believe it best portrays Lizzie’s sense of fun and personality and the building blocks of her prejudice best. Although the ending was acceptable, it was not as good as it could have been. It did not show the utter elation Darcy had at Elizabeth’s acceptance (finally) of his marriage proposal as portrayed in the book. He is is too serious or reserved. And then Elizabeth totally breaks the mood with “your hands are cold” which is unfortunate putting it mildly, plus then he immediately puts a cold hand to her cheek. I believe they tried to save it by adding the last scene. Overall though I love this version. The worst version deserves as little attention as you gave it, the 1940’s version. Hollywood did a number on it, so much so as to change the story almost unrecognizably.
I actually felt the pain and the struggle of the heroine in persuasion 2007 , it is indeed one of the best movies in my eyes , i at least watch it once a year that being said i think that it was meant to be done that way and i love it
I actually think the two main leads did incredibly well but the supporting cast does it no favors. I also think the production value was lacking (everything just looks super lackluster) and there were some weird directorial choices (making them take way too long to kiss in that final scene lol).
The 90s Pride and Prejudice miniseries with Collin Firth was by far the best. The early 2000s movie with Keira Knightley felt like it was the book on Fast Forward.
It was a movie, and how many miniseries of the same adaptation would you like? I think joe wright respected that 1995 already did a great job of the novel adaptation, he just trying to take on a different spin of the book. Focusing on the essence, I think it was great too, I felt every emotion from the scene and the every confrontation scene between the main character was my favourite. Matthew did a good job potraying a proud and powerful darcy, the man of a few words but his gaze or look was enough for you to back off.
Good list! I’m a bit disappointed that the 2008 Sense and Sensibility miniseries wasn’t mentioned. It’s a hidden gem that every Austen fan should experience. I’m also a huge fan of all the top five except 2005 P&P,it can’t stand up to the 1995 for me. Too many things happen at night and dramatically! And Amanda Root is the gold standard for Anne Elliot in Persuasion. Period. Thank you for the list!
What's weird, is it was mentioned, in a fleeting manner, when it was talking about Emma Thompson's S&S. But it wasn't actually ranked in the list. Yet Sanditon was...
I have watched the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice no fewer than 263747 times. One of my dogs is named Pemberly and the other is Ellie (Elizabeth). That is, and will forever be my all time favorite movie. #ilovedarcy
Great choices, thank you for that! The 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice is absolutely the best. And Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet is unforgettable.
NO! Sorry, but "Emma" 2020 is the best Emma adaptation. Better filmmaking overall, and it captures Jane Austen's humor in the best way (and I am an avid reader of Jane Austen). I'm not saying this is the best Jane Austen adaptation, but I propose it is the best "Emma" adaption. You don't have to be slavishly faithful to the plot of a book to represent its literary essence.
For me Pride & Prejudice (2005) will always remain the best Jane Austen's novel adaptation. While I also loved Sense & Sensibility & Emma. (2020), basically because I've watched only like 5-6 adaptations out of this list.
Emma was a novel character that had a lot of conflict and even Austen said it was a character that was not likeable. I think Beckinsale's adaptation is more true to the character as written. I don't think they should be all that appealing.
Thank you so much for this ranking! As a Jane Austen reader, I don‘t know why the new adaptions do all this to the stories. 🙄 Sometimes it seems as if they cover the brilliant stories with effects. I don‘t cry very often while watching films, but Sense and Sensibility got me at the final scene… 😭
Emma Thompson’s S&S gave me enough appreciation of the story to read the book and for the range in Alan Rickman’s acting. He proven himself to be more than capable playing less villainous roles in a way that helped to humanize Severus Snape in the later chapters of the Harry Potter films. It also made Elsinore Dashwood one of my favorite Austen protagonists.
2005 Pride And Prejudice, absolutely....Keira n Matthew made a perfect picture of Lizzy n Mr. Darcy, they were so beautiful I watched the movie thousands of times ❤❤
Pride and Prejudice 1995 is incredible. I watched it many times before reading the book and once I did read it I found that this adaptation basically followed the book word for word. It will always be one of my faves
I have been reading my favourite Austen novel - Persuasion - to my daughter and I have just shown her the 1995 adaptation of the same. The movie is subtle and as close to the novel as one could hope, using such a different medium. The well crafted script captures the social subtleties and the key elements of the novel without losing its essence. The acting by Amanda Root and Ciarán Hinds and the ensemble cast shows what magic happens when there is real acting and directing talent working well together. And, probably just as importantly, there is a confidence in the audience.
How can anyone sense and sensibility on earth , the portrayal of the sisters were so vulnerable and cinematic ❤️ the rain sequences had my heart . The charismatic emm and impulsive kate was beyond perfection.
Have there been any film/TV adapations of them that are set in the present day, using modern language - other than loosely inspired examples such as Clueless?
@@TengAi21 have you seen the 1995 A&E version? It's on two DVDs. There's a lot more of the story your missing on the 2005 version. I saw both and the A&E 1995 version is the best one.
I despised Persuasion 2022 so much - agree, totally beyond a joke........ Persuasion 2007 is my total favourite - close to no other movie, the second I watch it, I want to watch it again - love the understated subtlety and quiet innuendo - wordless romance - just two hearts connecting......
Absolutely agree: as far as I'm concerned, Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth are Lizzie Bennett and Darcy on screen and the adaptation is pretty much perfect.
I fell hard for Colin when he gave her the grateful look at the piano scene. I liked the 2005 version more than I thought I would, but the first firehose of a proposal was ridiculous, including the almost-kiss. I know he was supposed to be awkward, but really. Colin's "I'm trying to practice socializing here" came off as more believable. I really thought she'd end up with Wickham, the first time I saw it (never having read the book yet.) I saw later it was awkward, but awkward in a 1800 kind of way. It set the stage for Darcy being a thoughtful character who might be capable of introspection, not a lovesick eccentric.
pride and prejudice 2005 is my favourite film of all time and i think it perfectly portrays the humor and wit of austen. also i love the little details like the hand flex or the almost kiss where you can read so much between the lines!
EMMA. 2020 is addictive...my favorite adaptation. I've watched it at least 30 times. Johnny Flynn is a wonder as Mr. Knightley. While there are flaws, it outshines the other versions and deserves to be much higher on the list.
I have loved Jennifer Ehle since the first time I saw the P&P mini series. Jane Austen's work really deserves more than a couple of hours to tell it. I feel this is why the mini series is so loved.
Blind casting is always a recipe for disaster. The 1995 Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is and will always be the gold standard. I have never been able to understand the love for the Keira Knightley version. I think it's awful. Jeremy Northam's Mr. Knightley is perfection. Finally, Persuasion is my favorite Austen novel, and the 1995 version is amazing. Good picks!
@@nikkijubilant I hated the running scene. And what was up with the kissing scene? Somebody in the comments said that it looked like she was gnawing on an invisible carrot.

For me, Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility will always remain on the top, especially because of Alan Rickman's Col. Brandon.
Hear, hear. Bravo to Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman.

Jennifer Ehle and Collin Firth were by far the best in Pride and prejudice. The casting in that adaptation was exquisite and nothing else has come close. And Emma Thompson’s Sense and Sensibility is legendary.

Same here. First time I seen any Jane’s novels/movies and since read and watched all but this one will always be my favorite.
I agree with you
@@BritInvLvr It is the best!
Another fun fact to add to that: Firth and Ehle briefly dated after filming was completed. Not sure how long they were together, though.
How did I not notice this????
I did not know that about the short scene with both of them in The King's Speech. Now that I know, I think I will have to look into that sometime.
I prefer the 2005 version. I found 1995’s Lizzy too arch and a bit matronly.
@@MysticYoYo It's exactly like she supposed to be. It 2005 version she seems too careless & childish.
It's a shame thatMansfield Park
I totally agree. The very inaccurate crap with the 2005 version seemed great till I saw the series.
2005 Pride & Prejudice is an utter cinematic perfection to me. The entire film feels like being immersed into scenes drawn directly from 19 century English countryside painting. Pure art!!!
With terrible costumes because the director though the empire waist was unflattering on women 🤨
@@vanyadolly I wouldn't say they're terrible, just not as good as some. They're a far cry better than the southern Belle hoop skirts straight out of give with the wind for example.

1995 was a very good year for Jane Austin's Pride & Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion, etc.
My three favorite Jane Austen adaptions in one year!
I am SO happy (and very surprised) that they picked the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice as number 1. And it truly deserves to be there because it basically comes straight from the book. It's just like reading the book only on screen. It is the best version of Pride and Prejudice.

Definitely right on number one. Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth were quintessentially Elizabeth and Darcy.
Absolutely!
Agree!
Without question. They own the screen. And it's held up over time in ways newer versions have not.
Agree. But I thought S&S was awful. Loved Alan Rickman though. Emma Thompson not so much.
Good points.
The second best Elizabeth Bennet (after Jennifer Ehle) imo, is Greer Garson in the 1940 MGM film version. Laurence Olivier as Mr Darcy is a bit wooden though.
"The kind of struggle all women faced back then"
With respect, Jane Austen only ever wrote about a tiny minority at the top of society. Not a criticism, but still a fact.
Most women led lives nothing like this.
@@Samuel-hd3cp But the Bennets aren't at the top of society
It's hilarious 😂
it is the first time I have enjoyed the story of Emma in all the decades of reading Austin's work
I think it’s just that in mainstream media people think only of romance when they think of Austins work.
There;s anither Sense ^ Sensibility with Dan Stevens that is pretty good, but their cottage isn't as cozy
Agree. These two are my favorite Jane Austen novel adaptions

My favorite too!!
But the depiction of Elizabeth Elliott is gross, overacted and not in keeping with the book character

Yeah it is extra but Taylor joy previously said her nose was actually bleeding for that scene
Definitely better than 2005 P&P, and definitely in my top 2. My favorite novel, as well. ❤
Thank you. That soundtrack utterly solidified the 2005 Pride and Prejudice adaptation as cinematic perfection for me.

It was a delightful version. Anya Taylor-Joy portrayed snobby Emma to a T.
But the rest of the film was cringe. The humour fell so flat, it felt like it was aimed at 5 year olds.

Thank you Ms. Mojo for not failing me. BBC’s 1995 IS the Blueprint. Jennifer Ehle IS Elizabeth Bennet. Colin Firth IS Mr. Darcy.
She is too old.. but YES that’s the best.. Cyril Hyndes is the best persuasion
Colin Firth paid Mattew MacFaddyen a very big compliment by saying he now understands Darcy better. Firth loved McFadyen's take.
That one is the best! It's super long, all those volumes, but detailed as all heck lol. Good stuff!

I like both versions. When I want a "short fix", I'll choose the Kiera Knightly version; otherwise the 6 hour one is so beautiful and satisfying.
The Kiera Knightley version isn´t worthy to be in the same sentence as the 1995 version. It can´t be compaired.
@@wilhelminadevlin3340 Keira acts and looks like a wooden mannequin compared to Jennifer
How could you do that with the 2007 persuasion? 😭
It's one of the best films! the kiss scene is perfect, it shows her relief, happiness and even disbelief that they can finally be together. I always get emotional! The film brings her regret and sadness very well! This film is Art!
I agree, I was surprised they gave this adaptation such a low rating.
Agreed! they were able to bring out the sensitivite person that was Anne, and let me not get started at captain wentworth ❤❤❤
Agreed. The leads' chemistry in the 2007 version is overflowing, while I found the leads in the 1995 version incompatible.
Not to mention RPJ swoon swoon
I also agree. Loved it so much, bought the DVD. ❤
If you love Romola Garai, and if you haven’t seen her in Atonement (2007), please don’t miss her impressive performance! Best wishes.
Absolutely the best adaptation of Emma in my opinion. Far better than the Gwyneth Paltrow one. Usually the first adaptation we see is the one we prefer. While I enjoyed Paltrow's Emma quite a bit, the 2009 Emma blew it out of the water.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies... Still a more faithful adaptation than 2022's Persuasion 🙃
@@KittyStarlight the Lizzie Bennett Diaries! Where she records vlogs and tells the story that way! I liked that one 😊 it wasn't trying to be a true adaptation, and so I found out very enjoyable
I loved the 2007 version of Persuasion! I felt her pain of loss, regret then triumph! I loved the 1995 version too!
Me too, I really like both versions ♥️
Me too, it is my favorite version of Persuasion. I can´t believe it was ranked so low ( and so seen as a bad version).
@@katharinaben9922 Agree. It's actually a wonderful version!
The Persuasion with Ciarin Hines was the best. The electricity between the two was so strong you could feel it. The clasped hand towards the end touched my heart. Loved it.
When I saw Persuasion in the cinema, the audience sighed when they clasped hands. It was wonderful.
Oh thank goodness. I saw all the comments praising Kiera Knightlys pride and prejudice and I was going to be so upset if the miniseries wasn’t #1. It’s just so good.
The A&E Pride & Prejudice will never EVER be topped. Ever.
@@OneBigPear yes! I hate the Keira Knightly version
Yeah when I saw the title card and it had the 2005 P&P under "best" I was WTF, what about the 1995 P&P which is far superior. 2005 is pretty, cinematography is excellent but 1995 is a better adaption, the costuming is better and the story is better.
@@s6r231 It’s certainly pretty, but the Keira Knightley version stripped all of Austen from the story
Kiera is a great actress … but this movie was JUST “OK” (Definitely NOT the best!)
I love Sense and Sensibility and Alan Rickman and the whole cast was amazing!
I read that she wore no makeup until the letter scene.
i agree, that was one of the best ...its up there with jane Eyre with Michael Fassbender
I'd like to see this version, but the actor playing Captain Wentworth seems a little too old and maybe not very appealing.
@@danielaf1487 I thought Ciaran Hinds was handsome, but looked like he saw some terrible things (like anybody who have been through war.)
@@reikun86 That makes sense. I thought he was extremely attractive, really dashing!
Thank You! The 1995 version of P&P is by far the most superior adaptation. Colin and Jennifer had absolutely the best chemistry, and it is the closest to the book I have seen.
The 2020 Emma had so much style and charm. Deserves to be higher on the list!
It is my favorite. I can’t make it through any other Emma movie.
I hated it. It felt like satire as it is so overdone.
No subtlety and Emma isn’t charming at all which she is in the novel.
Dan Steven’s plays Edward Ferrrars in another excellent Sense and Sensibility from 2008 on Britbox
I thought that was the best Sense and sensibility of them all😍😍👏👏👏
Yes I agree it was excellent -- both versions excellent.
Persuasion 1995 is the most realistic and best acted. Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds are wonderful. She is also age appropriate and the screenplay was true to novel
Yes, a billion times yes.
I love that one but don’t think the actress looks age-appropriate at all. She is supposed to be 27 and she looks at least 40
Same with me. I love that Darcy.
Same!! ❤❤❤❤❤
@@joybranham8250 hahaha, yup the director made decision to change the costume cause to him it was unflattering. Its a choice I dont agree but ohwell.
I personally love the 2005 Pride And Prejudice, and i'm happy it's pretty high on the list
Top four: P&P 2005 (Matthew Macfadyen), S&S 1995 (Emma Thompson), Emma 2009 BBC (Romola Garai) and Love & Friendship 2016 (Kate Beckinsale).
I will forever love that Persuasion (1995) is directed to have them walking off together in silence after they confirm their continued feelings for one another. I think it fits perfectly in a film/book that is on built on subtle communication. It doesn't shout it. They are in love, and happy, and that's just the state of things 💛
I’d go to sea with Ciaran Hind’s Captain Wentworth any day 🥰
2005 P&P is just so aesthetic and beautiful to watch - I love watching it when I'm feeling something that I can't quite place. I'm also super fond of S&S for Alan Rickman's ability to make me swoon over older men haha
the score is absolutely gorgeous!!!
It could just be me, but I almost wished that Eleanor and Col. Brandon ended up together. He clearly had a lot of respect for her mind and character.
@@reikun86 I see what you mean, and no doubt they would have had a very pleasant marriage, bild on mutural respect and admiration.
But his heart was hopelessly lost to the lively, passionate sister, with her innocence and high ideals about life.

I wonder if Alan Rickman had any idea of the affect he had on the female members of the audience . . .
@@reikun86 I also think Mr.Palmer had a bit of a crush on Elinor
Without a shadow of a doubt, my favorite adaptations are Pride and Prejudice 2005 and Emma 2009. I have recently reread Emma and rewatched the BBC miniseries. Jonny Lee Miller is superb as Mr. Knightley, who, by the way, is my favorite male character of all time.
You are 1000000000000% RIGHT!!! JLM is my Mr. Knightley who is also my favorite Austen hero (and Austen said he was her favorite as well!)
"If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more." ❤
I love the 2007 version of persuasion, it's beautiful. So agree to disagree
Yeah me too I love that version 💘
Watched it countless times, It’s amazing. Definitely agree to disagree
I love it, too!
I love this capt. Wentworth
My favorite novel and favorite of all the adaptations
I couldn't agree more!!!
YES! best one for sure
Totally agree! I loooove the intensity of the scene when Darcy professes his love in the rain! 😍 It made hold my breath! 😂
I actually felt the pain and the struggle of the heroine in persuasion 2007 , it is indeed one of the best movies in my eyes , i at least watch it once a year
that being said i think that it was meant to be done that way and i love it
Me too, i love this version. It should not have been ranked this low. A very beautiful and precious movie
I agree. When Sally Hawkins cries on the writing paper and looks up at us! We’ve all been there.
I actually think the two main leads did incredibly well but the supporting cast does it no favors. I also think the production value was lacking (everything just looks super lackluster) and there were some weird directorial choices (making them take way too long to kiss in that final scene lol).
One of my favorite adaptations. I think MsMojo fails in appreciating nuance.
Agreed! It goes directly to your soul! It doesn't deserve that ranking
If you have not yet seen the 1995 adaption of Pride and Prejudice, I hope you will.
I loved Kate Beckinsale’s Emma more than Paltrow’s. The atmosphere and romantic weight were much more moving to me.
I couldn't get over Paltrow's fake accent. She was trying so hard to speak that the acting got left behind. Kate Beckinsale was lovely in Emma
I like both, but Garai is adorable, so...
Me too
Emma was a novel character that had a lot of conflict and even Austen said it was a character that was not likeable. I think Beckinsale's adaptation is more true to the character as written. I don't think they should be all that appealing.
@@beckymelzer6460 Not sure I agree. Emma is difficult to watch because we see an admirable young woman make mistakes.
Personally my top 3 is :
1- Pride and Prejudice (2005)
2- Emma (2020)
3- Sense and sensibility (1995)
Thank you so much for this ranking! As a Jane Austen reader, I don‘t know why the new adaptions do all this to the stories. 🙄 Sometimes it seems as if they cover the brilliant stories with effects. I don‘t cry very often while watching films, but Sense and Sensibility got me at the final scene… 😭
*MY FAVORITE:* "Sense and Sensibility," starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.
Emma Thompson’s S&S gave me enough appreciation of the story to read the book and for the range in Alan Rickman’s acting. He proven himself to be more than capable playing less villainous roles in a way that helped to humanize Severus Snape in the later chapters of the Harry Potter films. It also made Elsinore Dashwood one of my favorite Austen protagonists.
another beautiful score!!!
I loved this version. I also loved Hugh Laurie as Mr. Palmer.
Personally my favorite Jane Austin movie/ just movie in general in Pride and Prejudice(2005 version).

Couldn’t agree more with number one. It made me fall in love with Jane Austen when I was a teen.
Saaaame!!
2005's Pride and Prejudice is my favorite. I just love Keira Knightly and it's such a relaxing, wonderful movie.
Persuasion is my favorite book of Austen and I'm hopeful one day it'll get the justice it deserves.
I’m SO glad you mentioned Love and Friendship - this film is so close to the book and wonderfully acted! Such a great adaptation!
