This movie hurts so bad....the lady at the end of the film sums it up in a few sentences "you poor creatures."

I have just finished reading the book… during the last chapter I found myself beginning to feel an intense heart-ache and the power of the story manifesting. I have never been so moved by a book and I still have tears in my eyes writing this. What an author.

Sure, it's a heartbreaking story. But it reveals the painful reality of time and reminds us to live our lives to the fullest, to embrace the love we see in the people around us, and to understand the world we live in and the oppressive system of time.
That's just what I got out of it.

Even with how many fictional stuff there are in the film, how it deals with the passage of time is the most real thing I've seen in a movie. This is one of my favorites :')

People shouldn't watch this movie if they have broken hearts.
+Mays Tarek basically children who are unwanted and unloved are sent to this school where they live their lives and learn the notions of how to live in society as that as well as education because normal society is what they're secluded from. they are swayed never to leave tho the thought never crosses their minds but why it should is because all they are is cattle in a farm. when they hit a certain age, they have to dontate their organs which the cannot decline. their purpose in life is to be taken apart for other people's perseverance

WHAT IF I told you that this movie is about us, people? We people grow up to serve the world, without having a choice to not do so, just like slaves. Then we eventually loose our own bodies as it grow in age. Why everyone is running if there is abundance already? Who is making this happen?? The message of this movie is far real than u might think! This movie is so damn devastating like man......It literally takes you on an wild emotional roller coaster, like seriously one minute it makes you feel happy and then the next it rips your heart out and stomps on it, and then when you think the heart ache is done, it rips your heart out again and stomps on it some more....Its honestly a really well made movie though.

TheMythofSissyFuss I'd like to think that the people who took their time and effort into what they do shouldn't be put down. I loved this movie and it is one of my favourites and nothing can compare but I also loved TFIOS and it was amazing too. might not have been as good as Never Let Me Go but it was good. I'm just saying that everyone has their own opinion and people should state it without being beat on.
TFIOS is not a joke it was a decent movie. When a movie is called a joke, I think of something like the remake Annie film or the unnecessary Human Centipede sequels. So stating that everyone has their own opinion with everyone knows that FIOS is a joke, doesn't make sense. That's all...
It was a very beautiful movie, the lack of emotion of Kathy's narrating made it even more depressing. It's like they never even tried to make it sad and it's sad anyway.
Jesse Justice 100% my thoughts. Especially in the book Kathy is apathic...for example she doesn't "make love", she "has sex" with Tommy...and it seems like she wants to change things but if she fails she doesn't care that much...I loved/hated her because of this and I feel the same about the book/movie....it's tragic, sad, beautiful but with zero emotion and actually this contrast makes it unique and impossible to forget

I just read that book and those were my thoughts, I keep waiting for Kath to show something more, Even in the beggining, but to me it always seems like Kath feels nothing but pitty of Tommy, like she never allows herself yo feel more than what was expected of her, and all those time she should defend herself she did nothing more then walk away, it wasn't Ruth the one that keep them apart, it was always Kath 🥺😢😢
I know your comment is liek 6 years old, yet I wanted to add that Kathy's way of retelling her story is part of the pain you feel. She never really tried to find a way to flee, to live anywhere else, to not make a donation- she just endures. All the characters only endure, you as the reader cannot comprehend the weight on their shoulders and how okay they are with it. I think that's why it hurts so much just thinking about them- they never even dreamt of living a different life.
I've just watched this movie this morning and I'm still recovering. Its so depressing.
I love the scenes where Carey Mulligan is watching her friends, observing everything around her. I can feel her emotions bottling up, hidden just beneath the surface, so heartbreakingly restrained. Her relationship with Ruth is fascinating. She was the perfect Kathy H, radiating some kind of quiet strength and depth. I feel like she should've gotten an oscar or something.
Mulligan got an award for her role in this. And rightly so.

I love that about movies: a subtle performance is readable on camera and preserved on film. And there are some scarily good actors out there. The three leads are huge talents; I thought they were at their best here.

I saw an interview with Kasuo Ishiguro who was born in post atomic bomb Nagasaki Japan. He conceived the idea for this book by musing what life would be like today if DNA and cloning were the major scientific breakthroughs in the 1940's rather than nuclear energy. We quickly accepted the fact that entire cities could be energized or destroyed by nuclear energy so would we accept the concept of farming clones for spare parts. It is a fascinating topic for discussion and I enjoyed that very much....... We humans have a tremendous capacity for doing terrible things to each other. The key is to label the victims as sub-human as we did in the U.S. with black slaves, as the Nazis did with jews, homosexuals, slavs and so many others and basically what we do in any war with people who want to harm us. You could see in this film that non clones had a hard time looking these children in the eyes. Madame was freaked out by the clones too. ........... Oh by the way, don't expect organized religion to step in to help. The Vatican and Christians of Europe watched the jews get shipped off to death camps and slave owners could point to the good book and find passages that supported slavery too. ....... This was an important book and a great film for people who have the intelligence to fill in the untold part of the story for themselves.

The rest of the world stood by and watched until it was already too late, and while most of the blame for that has to rest on the nation-states that had the power to stop the Nazis but waited until the last possible moment, organisations like the Vatican and many Protestant churches in Germany also let down their Jewish brothers and sisters. It's hard to accept, but it's true.
oh, and by the way, I'm not saying there weren't individual gentiles, both in Churches and in other roles, who fought back or tried to save lives by whatever means they could. They existed, and their names will be remembered forever as the Righteous Among the Nations. But they were a minority.
actually if you look it up the Vatican did attempt to help the Jews and saved many lives at the time, and they had a rivalry with Mussolini. The Catholics in germany were persecuted by the National Socialists as well, because Hitler saw organized religion as a capable opposition to Fascist rule, and created "Positive Christianity" which was pseudo christianity bent to his will
I watched this around 5 years back and I never recovered. I come back here every now and then to see how many else fell in to this emotional abyss. This broke my heart in to a million pieces. Everytime I hear someone talking about this movie or book, there is a chillness spreading through my veins and I feel my heart aching.

It's the calmness on the surface throughout the movie that disturbs me the most. It could break out at any moment, but it doesn't, aside from Tommy's rage episodes. Below the thin surface is the emotional abyss you mentioned. Even Kathy's tears in the end were silent and calm.

This movie is unbelievably underrated and under appreciated, even in 2020
Made 10yrs ago, and I don't recall it ever having been shown on terrestrial tv here in the UK... Maybe that's because the actual subject matter in this movie is too 'rated and appreciated' by those who select what the great unwashed are allowed to see? A golden rule of thumb, for the ever inquisitive... Is to hunt down those movies that were never broadcast in the first place, or have curiously disappeared from our screens over the last few decades. You will be shocked!
it's the most realistic and disturbing alternative history scenario I've ever seen on film. I remember watching it many years ago, and the chilling emotional effect on me lasted six days. i had to watch other very light television to try to lift the gloom. this film is not good for ones mood, and i strongly urge that anyone with even slight depression should not watch it. for anyone who is emotionally secure and happy, it is a masterfully understated, hyper realistic and obeys the golden rule of tv and film 'show dont tell'. theres no lengthy exposition, even by carey mulligan's narration. this keeps the mystery going for a long time. we are immediately immersed in this alternative england. it is also shocking because these horrors are happening to posh white young people, who normally experience untroubled privileged lives, if it was poor drug addicts being used, we would be far less shocked by the film, and far less moved. it's alternative history i.e. if nuclear weapon research had been replaced by cloning and other genetics meddling, this is what England would be like. from what i've seen above the writer of the novel intended it as an alternative history. and theres no evidence that it is set in the future. it seems to be roughly present day, give or take ten years. although there is a curious absence of technology-so that also may be a feature of this alternative history version of england. if not for the choice of the writer to do an alternative history originating in changes to the mid twentieth century, this would be a sci-fi, and it would be set fifty years in the future or so. you dont have to have space, phasers, time travel and A.I for it to be sci-fi. there are many understated sci-fi shorts that are being made that are like this film in tone, theme and subject, with greater emphasis on character than plot. this is also a world building film-it's about immersing us in the reality of this world. it stays in a very small local area. we have no idea about the rest of the country. it just stays in helsham, with a small group of friends. the threat to them seems so civilised-making it even more chilling.
@@shaunhumphreys6714 Although it's a parallel world, the novel is set in the 1990s - that's stated at the beginning just before the opening chapter, and there are references to 90s era things, such as Walkmans. Apart from the fact that there are clones donating their organs around, it appears to be much the same as the real 1990s.

Just seen this film for the first time. Cried buckets at the end as it was so unbearably sad. The film was beautifully acted, understated in the way only the English can manage. Of course the outside world didn't want to know these children had souls because then they couldn't have used them to donate their organs. But these clones were as human as you or I, they could love and be loved and that is the tragedy of the film.
It's funny that you say it's a particularly English thing, because the writer of the book is called Kazuo Ishiguro, born in Japan though raised in the UK.

It's about friendships, love, bonds and most importantly time, which is running out, not only in their lives, but in each of our lives; we're all mortals, all slaves of the running time, left with some time, some bonds to cherish and some memories to grieve/hold on. We're all "poor creatures". By distancing us from their lives, Ishiguro was inviting us to contemplate more on our own lives. As we tend to understand better when we distance ourselves from our own reality.
Before watching this i thought i was a strong man who can control his tears.

I think it hits too close to home. Death is a topic somewhat difficult to grasp but this film reminds us, in a frighteningly personal way, that none of us are going to be here forever. The clock is ticking on us all.

Well it is a depressing movie. All of these kids are unsure of what they even lived for, barely had a decent life. Being a bioengineered donor and forced give up your life to safe other people is a sad way to live. THey're not even treated as human beings who're deserving of respect. So seeing your 2 closest friends die like that and knowing you're next...it sucks. :'(

When I first watched this movie, the only thing I could feel was sadness. The film got really dark as the plot proceeded. Touching and brilliantly bittersweet. I think It has done the book justice, even more personally speaking. Thanks to this film I discovered Kazuo Ishiguro, an amazing author. His "Nocturne" is one of my most favorite books and I've been waiting for other works of him to be published in my country.

Still the greatest book and movie ever made. The deepness is uncanny, shallow people won't understand what the author wants to reveal. You won't understand this movie at first but if you watch this alone and deeply feel and understand the feelings of the character, you would understand what Kazuo Ishiguro wants to reveal. This movie is not for mainstream and shallow people. This movie is too great and too deep to be understood by those people.

The scary and SAD part of this movie is that it might actually happen. I hated when the school lady as they walked away heart broken said of them, POOR CREATURES. Just like artificially made organs, people carrying and preparing organs to be donated them for the sick might face this fate.

I've just finish watching this movie and eyes are like swollen right now and i have class in the morning. Very few movies can make me cry like this one did. Jeez. It's so sad yet it's so beautiful. The movie is so well made and thoughtful that it forces you to realize and appreciate everything you have in life. Also, the actors did a great job.

it's amazing to me that this film is so often overlooked ... between the 3 leads there are 6 Oscar nominations - 2 each for Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley, plus 2 nominations for Sally Hawkins and one nomination each for Charlotte Rampling and Andrew Riseborough ... such a pool of talent and such a great film
After reading the book I felt satisfied and empty. Not really depressed or anything how others felt while watching this film.
But then again I got really immersed into the book and the characters. The ending they got was tragic yes, but it was right for the characters in my opinion.
Beautifully done story. It touches you for shure if you read the book or watch the film, its something you will never forget.
This film contains Keira Knightly, Andrew Garfield and CAREY MULLIGAN and looks like it will make me cry. I must watch it immediately.

This movie left me with such a weird feeling. I can't properly describe it.
Even tho the movie is nicely done, they've missed a few crucial things, so the book is (isn't it always?) a lot better.
Interesting fact, "Never let me go" is Carey's fav book and she was scared that they will make a movie before she's old enough to play Kathy. When she heard that the movie is on, she very actively campaigned for the role and, fortunately, got it, cause I can't think of a better choice.
It's been almost exactly 9 years since i first saw this movie and man i still think about it every now and again and it still breaks my heart every single time. Not to mention the soundtrack...that alone can make me cry for hours 😭😭😭

The book is mysterious but I feel like the only reason I understood the movie was because I’d read the book, it reveals more I think and I personally understood the characters more in the book. A lot is quite vague in the movie but it was still cool to see this whole mind-bending scenario come to life !

Brilliant book, brilliant movie! The story is just heartbreaking, and the movie's very well done in my opinion. That scene when Tommy gets out of the car and starts screaming is unbelievably sad. Garfield delivered an outstanding performance.

Probably one of the best films I've ever watched. Stuff all the hollywood crap. Beautifully made and sad as anything. Hard to want to watch again it's that deep. Congrats to all those who made it. Perfect acting, lighting, casting etc etc.
Agreed. Im not usually a fan of Keira Knightley but I thought all of the actors/ actresses including her were brilliant and didn't go over the top.
just watched it again the other night it was on tv. usually most tv shows are crap. for them to put this on was awesome. nothing flash just realistic and awesome. we are all used for anothers purpose and what people live and do for just so others can benefit is quite shocking.
Writing this in 2023. I have finished my bachelor's in medicine, then switched to a master's in biology. Maybe it is because of this educational background, but every now and then, this movie pops up in my head and it feels almost like a slap in the face. It makes me think about modern medicine and how far we would go to better our lives, even now, when health in western countries never has been better. We are doing this to animals already. Human live is spilled in wars everyday. Are we truely that different, or that much off of stories like this? I think not.

I went through this entire film with my emotions weighing me down like a very heavy blanket. But I didn't cry until the scene where Andrew screamed. It was so weird, like he didn't need words at all. That scream explained everything.

i've just finished the book and this trailer hurts like hell. i just found about this film today and seeing the characters come into life made me feel the emotions more. tommy screaming in frustration just hits different. and seeing madame and miss emily brings me back to those hailsham moments. i want to watch this movie, but i'm afraid my heart will not take it

I think in this case it does not matter much. Maybe it makes it even sadder. You know what it is about, and the characters naivitee makes it worse for you. And it doesn't give away everything.
it's been eight years since i saw this movie and its definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen; I've watched this movie several times and it's so mesmerizing beautiful and so well done, this movie reminds you of what's the point of life: just go people and live your life like you're about to die the day after, go and tell your loved ones that you love them; make sure you are leaving your live the way you want, so one day you'll feel like you've got enough time here and specially that you didn't waste your opportunity to live

I've never hated and loved a movie more. Hated because of their society and how much I relate with Ruth. Ruth a truly misunderstood character. (I've never done what she has but I can relate to the lonely in her.) All in all it's a brilliant film.
yes I totally agree, what she did might be a selfish act but it doesn't mean she was not right about fearing to end up alone and not loved... except that she chose the wrong person to be with betraying her bestfriend and taking away the only chance the couple had for a true love... i adored every single scene of the movie

I just watched this movie for a class today. I had to try hard not to cry... I was really hoping for a happy ending and a meaning for all of it but there just wasn't. You never find out how it all came to be or get more details. It's a good movie but just really sad :(

I've just watched this. It's absolutely heartbreaking that their entire lives (though short lived) were nothing but a paradox. It's terrifying how they were given expensive education and taught to be creative and to value the importance of life only to accept the doom of their fate and become mere tools. Although it's disturbingly sad, it's now my favourite movie. I never realised and more importantly cherished the value of time until now.
Such a powerful movie that has stuck with me (or haunted?) since its release. I don't think I can ever bring myself to watch it again however, despite being one of my all time favourites. It's hard to explain why.

The scene when Tommy screams... Heartbreaking. This movie is truly haunting in so many ways. And it is true, we all feel like we don't have enough time. I try to appreciate every little thing that comes into my life. I'm so grateful for every moment of happiness I have the chance to live. Our lives are too short. That's why it is so precious, so beautiful. I'm glad I saw this movie ; it wasn't easy to watch, but it was worth it. I learned a lot from it.

Just done watching this film with mix emotions and teary eyes. Well done! It affects me. I really cant suppressed my hatred to those people behind that shit school for raising kids only to be organ donors. They were like demons in disguise! Just by recalling how they died during their 3rd donation, oh my...that's totally horrible! And about those kids who already grown up and unravel the truth, are they ignorant that much not to asked for help...they were so unlucky to live in the most worst human trafficking era.
I cried while reading the book and I cried while watching the movie. Forever one of my favourite stories.
When Tommy lay down and Cathy remembered the smile on his face at Hailsham, I dried up my tears. I was lucky to come across this movie when I was 19.
Why couldn't Kathy and Tommy just run away together?? Why hadn't anybody tried to escape? I feel like at some point that would be a human response
Why do we slaughter cows knowing they suffer, knowing it's a leader of greenhouse gas emissions and effecting climate change? Because that's the world we live in. Most of us don't even think to question it. Similar scenario here.
I have the same problem with this story. I haven't seen the film, but in the book they appear to have complete freedom to go anywhere and do anything. I can't think of a situation where people would comply with this. It's not like this is compliance under threat of violence, although from this trailer it does look like they characters are under 24/7 surveillance and can be tracked. That is not the case in the book.
Where should they go? What are they supposed to do? They can't just go and get work somewhere, they have no passport or papers or anything. And they can't expect any help. They aren't being forced to do this, because they have no other option. Thats why they let them be. Eventually they will succumb to their fate. And even if one or so runs away they have more than enough to take their place. Running does not save them. They have been sheltered all their childhood, so why leave? They don't really get what life has in store for them, but that at the same time, it is the only possible outcome. The only "real" thing is the whole ordeal about the deferrals. That is the only thing they consider.
This is why the story is such a depressing one. It is not that the characters are hopeless or anything, but the fact that they just accept their role, hurts so much. The characters aren't very angry or upset about their fate, they just... accept it. And we, as the readers, feel we have to be sad for them. Angry for them.
@Patriot Jefferson look even though i agree with most of what u just wrote i do not agree with your comparison to a fetus. a fetus is a clump of cells. no feeling. no pain. the characters in the movie on the otherhand suffer actively, comprehend whats going to happen to them. a fetus is only one small step away from being a naturally dying egg or sperm cell. so i find your comparison quite undignified. "socialists" my god. do you know what a socialist is?

I saw this movie totally by accident, and it changed how I feel about people and science forever....very emotional, and touches on ethical dilemma's that we will soon be facing in our lives....cloning is already going on, and this film makes you take a real look into this, and why it should not be done for any reason.
Such an underrated and absolutely spectacular movie!!!! I hope everyone sees it and gives it a chance!!!!

because watching a movie isn't just about being surprised by the ending, it's about exploring the emotions that someone is going through or learning more about the story of someone and seeing the product of someone's film making skills which then make a wonderful film which is thought provoking and beautiful to watch :)

this movie is aan absolute masterpiece and if anyone is wondering about seeing i'd say go ahead immediatly! it makes you appreciate the fact that you can chose to be however you want to, a very meaningful story original and different from anyotther movie! I have to admit that I've cried like a baby during the whole movie...

One of the most heartbreaking films I've seen. Towards the end, she reminds us that everyone dies. It helped with my profound sadness for the characters. Yes, some will live longer at the cost of others, but no one escapes death. You could feel the desperation for just a few more extra years with a loved one. I found myself wanting them to commit suicide and die in each others arms. To die on their own terms. But, that wasn't what they were programmed to do.
